This Show What You Know® Florida! for Grade 5 Student Workbook was created to give youpractice for Florida’s state assessment in Reading, Mathematics, and Science.

The first two chapters in this workbook—Test Anxiety and Test-Taking Strategies—werewritten especially for fifth-grade students. Test Anxiety offers advice on how to overcomenervous feelings you may have about tests.

The Test-Taking Strategies chapter includes helpful tips on how to answer questions correctlyso you can succeed on Florida’s state assessment.

The next three chapters of this Student Workbook will help you prepare for the Reading,Mathematics, and Science assessment.

• The Reading chapter includes a Reading Practice Tutorial, a full-length ReadingAssessment, and a Glossary of Reading Terms that will help you show what you knowon Florida’s state assessment.

Test Anxiety

Worry Less about TestsLots of students worry about taking tests, so if you are a test worrier, you are not alone. Manyof your classmates and friends also have fearful feelings about tests, but they usually do notshare their feelings. Keeping feelings to yourself is not a good idea because it just makesthings worse. You may feel you are the only person with a problem and there is no one outthere to help, but that is not true. Be brave. When you talk to your parents, teachers, andfriends about your test-taking worries, you will feel better. You will find out that other people(even your teachers and parents) have felt worried, nervous, or scared about taking tests. Youwill then have other people on your team to battle the test monster.

When students feel nervous, worried, and scared, it sometimes seems there is no way out.This is also not true. Everyone can feel calm about taking tests. You don’t have to be thesmartest student, the most popular kid, or the fastest athlete to be a brave test taker. You justneed to be willing to try; you will be amazed at how much better you will feel.

Test-TakingStrategies

You Can Do Your Best on TestsMost students want to do their best on tests.Tests are an important way for teachers to knowhow well students are doing and for students tounderstand how much progress they are makingin school. Florida’s state assessment helpsschools find out how well students are learning.This helps teachers and principals make theirschools even better. You can do the best jobpossible in showing what you know by learninghow to be a good test taker.

It is not possible to do a good job without the right tools. Test-taking strategies are tools tohelp you show what you know on tests. Everyone needs good tools to fix a problem. Itdoesn’t matter whether the problem is taking Florida’s state assessment or fixing a brokenbicycle; without good tools, it’s hard to be a success. Think about what would happen if yourbicycle breaks and you do not have the right tools to fix it. You might know a lot aboutbicycles, but you can’t show what you know unless you have the correct tools to fix it. Youmight know that the bolts on your wheels have to be put on very tightly, but how can you dothat without good tools to help?

Tools are not tricks. Using good test-taking strategies is not cheating. The best students are notgeniuses; they have learned to use good test-taking strategies. They learned what they need todo to show what they know when they are taking tests. You can learn these test-takingstrategies, too.

Reading Practice Tutorial

Read the story “Tucker the Squirrel” before answering Numbers 1 through 4.

Tucker the SquirrelThe afternoon sky turned a deep blue. The wind began to blow and

broke off the smallest limbs of the oak trees in Jonathan’s backyard.Even though it was late May, Jonathan heard on theradio that a spell of cool weather was on its way. Thedays hadn’t become too hot yet, but he thought the crisp,fresh air felt nice just the same.

At the dinner table, Jonathan and his family talkedabout the change in weather and discussed plansfor an upcoming trip to the lake. He picked at hisgreen peas and daydreamed about summer,friends, and no school. After finishing dinner,Jonathan and his little sister cleaned up thekitchen and put away the dishes.

Out the window, Jonathan could see Rudy, hisdog, playing with a rubber ball. Suddenly, Rudybegan to bark. He barked and barked until finallyJonathan went outside to find out what all the noise was about. When he opened the door, thewind caught it and threw it into the house with a loud SMACK! He fought the gusts andslowly pulled the door closed and made his way down the porch steps. He saw Rudynudging a small animal with his nose.

Jonathan made his way across the green grass. His hair was swirling all around his head.Carefully, Jonathan walked toward Rudy and the tiny creature. At first, he thought it was amouse, but after a closer look, Jonathan saw that it was a baby squirrel. He looked up at thetall tree. Squirrels must have nested somewhere up there, he thought. He ran inside andcalled for his parents to come into the back yard.

Jonathan’s dad lifted the baby squirrel into his hands to see if it was still alive. It had taken along fall out of its nest, but it seemed to be OK. Jonathan and his dad recognized it was anEastern Gray squirrel, just like the ones they had seen before in the park. Its eyes were stillclosed, and after a little research, they guessed it was only about four weeks old.

They took the squirrel inside and tried to warm it up. Jonathan’s mom called the wildlifedepartment for instructions on how to help the abandoned baby. Jonathan thought it wouldbe a great idea to raise the baby squirrel and immediately gave it the name “Tucker.” Hefound a large shoebox and put an old shirt inside. Then he put a heating pad underneath thebox to help keep Tucker warm.

Even though Jonathan wanted to keep the squirrel as a pet, he knew that it must be releasedback into the wild. As soon as Tucker was old enough to find food and could survive on hisown, he would be returned to the back yard where Jonathan knew he really belonged.
