Preparation Bishop Kelley High School as a "Life Preparatory School" is something you see in and around our campus and on our admissions material. It's something we believe and take very seriously. During the years each student is with us at BK, he or she, with effort put forth by the student, will be prepared for college but also for life in college and beyond college. That preparation is academic but also spiritual and social. Sunday December 1st is the first day of Advent, a four week liturgical season that prepares us for the celebration of Christmas. This preparation is vital for a number of reasons. First and foremost, big events in our lives require preparation. Weddings, birth- day parties and vacations require planning. If done spontaneously, they usually don't turn out the way we want them to. Christmas is coming up whether we like it or not, but if it is to be celebrated well, preparation is vital. The same is true for college. Anyone could just show up at a college and sit in on class but did their prior experience prepare them for the academic rigor of the college classroom? Preparation is vital. Down at the Bishop Kelley Stadium, two new buildings are being prepared! It's Phase I of our stadium expansion and renovation project. This phase will feature a 5,000 sq. ft. facility on the visitor's side which will include bathrooms, concessions, and locker rooms. The locker rooms will be used by visiting teams and BK student athletes. On the home side, we're adding new restrooms that we hope will be part of Phase II, a larger home side renovation. We want to begin Phase II in the near future but will need financial help from many in the BK community to make this a reality. Through our annual fund "Believe in Kelley", we're raising needed funds for more tuition assistance to meet a growing need and, in the upcoming spring and summer, we will purchase newer busses for our students, faculty, and coaches. Please support our efforts! During this Advent Season, I pray that we will all prepare our hearts through prayer, fast- ing, and almsgiving to celebrate well the birth of Christ and the Christmas season that follows. In these months of December and January, Bishop Kelley, especially our out- standing faculty and staff, will continue to prepare your students for the next assignment, the next test, the next project, college, life and heaven. It's what we strive to do each and every day of the year. Thank you for your continued support and prayers in this great Catholic, Lasallian mission of life preparatory education. The award hours are tracked for a calendar year (January 1 thru December 31) rather than the academic year. For more information: www.presidentialserviceawards.gov/tg/pvsainfo/dspAboutAwards.cfm

The Honey Springs Battlefield Historic Site commemorated the 150th anniver-sary of the Battle of Honey Springs with a reenactment in November. The battle, fought July 17, 1863, was the most important engagement of the Civil War in Indian Territory. Although it was not a school trip, many BK history students attended.

Roxanne Eddington is a Brother Bernardine Scholar, Secretary of the Art Club, and a Cross Country Comet. She is taking AP classes in Art, Spanish, Economics, Physics, and Government. Roxy volunteers at Asbury UMC and on mission trips with Park Plaza Church of Christ. Her hobbies are “eating good food, painting, running, and being with the people I love.” She also works at Freckles Frozen Custard. Roxy’s favorite quote is “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and I could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.” She hopes to travel through central and South America, to practice the Spanish language and take care of orphans. “But my next option is at-tending college, I’m just not sure where.”

& JACK CALVERT

Jack Calvert is the graphic designer for the Breezeway, and editor of the senior section for the Crest yearbook. He is a Comet Ambassador, Link Crew Leader, and member of Student Council, National Honor Society and the Speech and Debate team. He has also participated in Kelley Krazies and Freshman Football. A member of Christ the King Parish and Quest youth group, Jack is an Extraordinary Minister and religion teacher at St. Catherine's through the Senior Catechist program. He has attended, Search and Quest retreats. Jack has volunteered at Catholic Charities, Designer Showcase, Habi-tat for Humanity, and Junior Comet Wrestling. He has worked at Hidea-way Pizza and has worked as a nanny for a year.

“My favorite thing about Kelley is the way it educates the whole person. Over the past four years, I have grown so much, not only intellectually, but also socially and spiritually. Although Bishop Kelley may not be the only school with great academics, student activities, or spiritual opportunities, I think it is the only school that combines all three. Next year I will most likely attend the University of Kansas and major in architecture.”

Congratulations to Emily Meador for making the Sr. High All-State Chorus. Only 50 soprano 2s make the choir from around the state and over 500 auditioned.

Mrs. Walker was a student teacher at Bishop Kelley and then began her teaching ca-reer here. She was a Student Activities Director at Rogers State College before return-ing to BK! We are so glad she did! This is her eighth year at Kelley.

She helps students love learning whether it is in an English class, Speech and Debate class, or Speech I. Mrs. Walker is the sponsor for National Honor Society and helps organize the NHS/Red Cross blood drives.

Always with a smile, Mrs. Walker is appreciated for her humor, rapport, and creativi-ty. After years of being an inspirational role model to her students, Mrs. Walker now uses those skills in parenting. She and her husband, Brian, became parents in the last year when they adopted Nikki and Keith.

► PLANNED GIVING is beneficial for tax planning as well as funding Bishop Kelley’s future. One effective and convenient way for Bishop Kelley supporters to help the school grow its endowment is through planned gifts. This year alone, we’ve had three families put in place planned gifts totaling $400,000 that will one day benefit the Bishop Kelley Endowment Trust. Through the Tulsa Community Foundation and Advancement Group planned giving services are delivered by outstanding professionals who specialize in helping donors with their estate and charitable financial planning to benefit family members, charities, and other entities. As an extension of the BK Advancement Office, their services are free to BK donors. Planned Giving helps Kelley build an endowment which provides significant interest income that currently funds over one-third of our annual tuition assistance dollars. The value of our endowment is currently about one-third of what it should and could be for a school our size. By growing our endowment, we can assure that Bishop Kelley will be here for future generations. Contact The Advancement Group at 918.491.0079 or Doug Thomas, BK’s Director of Advancement at 918.949.8872 or at [email protected].

► GO for Catholic Schools. Choose BK!

A donor can make a gift of $4,000 and get most of it back! In some cases, the net cost to donor is $380 with tax deductions and credits. To see how you can make the most of your giving this year, see www.GOforCatholicSchools.com or visit with Doug Thomas, BK’s Director of Advancement at 918.949.8872 or [email protected].

► HELP BEAUTIFY BK!

Help beautify Bishop Kelley’s campus with the gift of a tree. In addition to having a large campus with many areas to landscape, we have had extreme weather over the past three years that has taken a toll on our trees. Trees and crape myrtles will be supplied by Southwood Land-scape & Garden Center. Southwood is operated by BK alums Joe Schulte ’67, Ginny Cronk Schulte ’68, Brenda Schulte Baird ’95 and Margaret Schulte ’98. Information is available on the Bishop Kelley website and on Bishop Kelley Facebook.

THANK YOU to everyone who has supported Believe in Kelley 2013, chairs Teresa and Kurt Slagle. This annual fund helps with tuition assistance and school needs not covered by tuition. We have currently raised $132,000, or 31% toward our goal of $425,000. This year’s Believe in Kelley drive will fund upgrades to our bus fleet and tuition assis-tance. A gift now will be reflected in 2013 tax-deductible donations; the drive extends until June 30, 2014. https://www.bishopkelley.org/about/giving-bk

Phase I Stadium Improvements by Selsor and Schaefer Architects. Work began in October. Phase II includes new restrooms, and with additional funding, a larger home side renovation.

This is a long overdue project where the majority of the funding came through the "Forever, Bishop Kelley" Capital Campaign. The new facilities will benefit fans and visiting teams. It will directly im-pact eight teams including Boys and Girls Soccer and Track, Football, Spirit Squad, Softball and Baseball. 1) On the east side (visitor) of the stadium we are building a one-story, 5,000 sq. ft. facility that will include two locker rooms, coaches’ office, laundry facility, and restrooms and concessions for our guests. 2) On the home side we are building restrooms for both men and women. The hope is that these restrooms will be part of a larger overhaul to add seating, improve quality of the field house, and also to build a larger press box to accommodate visiting coaches, and TV and radio for both BK and for our visitors. Thanks to Anchor Stone Co. and GCC Mid- Continent Concrete Co. for donating the concrete and aggregate for Phase I. Construction will take many months to complete. Please feel free to direct any questions to Advancement Director Doug Thomas or to BK President Fr. Brian O’Brien.
