Athens House Trip to The Warehouse

Climbing Centre

Some of Athens House were ‘monkeying around’ last Sunday in Gloucester’s fantastic Climbing Centre. The children received full instructor training and got to pit their wits against a variety of climbing walls and overhangs, with challenges to suit all abilities and ages. The session was topped off with half an hour of ‘bouldering’ on the fifth floor of the warehouse. This huge room is kitted out with a sponge floor allowing the children to ‘free’ climb and scramble to their heart’s delight, whilst being assured of a soft landing! Much fun was had by all, and thank you to Mrs Conner and Ludo for coming along to watch and help.

Jack Cunnningham in training with Team Evolution.

Jack Cunningham, one of our Year 8 Boarders, is currently away, ski race training, in the Alps with alpine performance training group Team Evolution. Jack has skied regularly since the age of three. At the age of eleven, a holiday snap was spotted on Facebook by the former GB women’s team captain, who advised that Jack should try out for a ski academy. Since then Jack has spent much of this Autumn and Winter working with his coaches. He starts racing in Bormio Italy on Sunday at the English Alpine Ski Race. Watch this space for news on how Jack gets on.

Inclusive sport

I am not sure whether Sky TV would have secured a better deal if they had bid successfully for the rights to the U10C boys’ football team rather than the Premiership. End to end action, goalmouth scrambles and clearances, full blooded challenges and plenty of honest endeavour. “The lads gave 110%”. More importantly, it was the perfect example of why sport in schools should be inclusive and total involvement is something for which the Prep will continually strive.

A time for work and a time for play

The Whybrows’ dog, Cookie, paid a visit to both Kingfishers and main school assemblies in order to demonstrate that there is a time for work and a time for play.

He is obedient enough to know when to run away with his favourite toy and when to give it to me. By getting him to do this in front of the children, I hoped to demonstrate that there is a time for play and a time to quickly settle to the task in hand. This skill of adapting one’s behaviour to different situations becomes more complex as one grows older. Teaching children the basic differences between the classroom and the playground is a good place to start.

Cancelled fixtures

Last Saturday, our Lower School fixtures, due to be played at Dean Close, were cancelled, understandably, on account of frozen pitches. It is not appropriate to question decisions taken by the hosting school; I certainly would not expect the decisions of either Mr Simpson or Miss Ramsay to be called into question. I must also state that, in the event of a cancellation, Lower School staff are not able to provide alternative activities at short notice.

Staffing arrangements after half-term

Mrs Miles and Mrs Humphrey begin their maternity leave immediately after half-term. Mrs Miles’ teaching will be covered by Mrs Baird, who is presently working at the Prep and who will cover Biology, and Miss Willey, who is at present teaching at College and will cover Physical Education and Games. Until further notice, Mrs Humphrey’s teaching will be covered internally. Miss Charlotte Lewis will begin to shadow Mrs Lopez Reyes’ teaching in preparation for Mrs Reyes’ departure on maternity leave, early next term. Mrs Miles’ House duties will be covered by Mr Murray and Mr Hall will take charge of her tutor group.

Safety in the car park

Please can I remind parents that at all times we operate a strict one way system in the car park. Please do not leave the car parking area that is the playground via the front of the school and Thirlestaine Road. Please exit from this car park via Bath Road.

House ChefOver half-term, once again we are offering the children the opportunity to use their baking skills to participate in a friendly House competition. In Kingfishers we are asking the children to bake and decorate either biscuits or fairy cakes. Lower School should concentrate on biscuits, Middle School on fairy cakes and Upper School on muffins. The theme for the decoration is

“The Cheltenham Festivals”

Entries should be the work of the children (although adults can, of course, assist where safety is paramount!) and be brought to the dining room on Monday 23 February and will be judged by the School’s catering team. Simple prizes will be given in each year group and points will be awarded to all who enter.

Reception Goes Animal Crazy!

We have had a fabulous few weeks learning about different types of animals and the environments in which they live. The children have had great fun with lots of activities ranging from a visit from a Vet, sitting on a tractor and after looking at the lifecycle of a hen, being able to hold a real live chick. The classroom has been turned into a vet’s surgery and the children have been saving animals’ lives on a daily basis though, on occasions, the prognosis has not been good. On one famous occasion, one budding practitioner was heard to say, “It’s no good it’s just dead!”

Year 3 English and ICT

This half term, Year 3 have been studying traditional tales. We have looked at known traditional tales and also alternative versions such as ‘Snow White in New York’ and ‘The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig’.

As part of this, we have been creating ‘Wanted’ posters for the evil characters. We have had to use descriptive language such as adjectives, adverbs and similes. We have also thought about how our wicked characters behave.

In ICT we have transferred these writing skills into Comic Life by making ‘Wanted’ posters for ourselves. We were able to add photographs, speech bubbles, subheadings and captions to our posters.

History Detective News From Middle School

We are all so excited about how WWII changed the lives of our own families. During half term, if anyone has the chance to see relatives who can help us by retelling their own experiences of this era, or even sharing a precious artefact with us, then rest assured we will use this invaluable family history to help enrich our own research.

Upper SchoolUpper School Rainforest Workshop

The Year 7 and 8 pupils were treated to a Rainforest experience as part of their project on Brazil. Dave Shaw has travelled and lived in the Rainforests of Costa Rica, Malaysia, Borneo and Brazil. He spent the morning educating and entertaining the pupils with his Fascinating Rainforest Road Show. The children had the opportunity to learn about life in the Rainforest.

They watched Dave demonstrate how to hunt with a blowpipe and then sharpen the arrow on a teeth of a piranha. Dave also brought a range of animals. The students stroked a tarantula, held a snake and discovered how to find a scorpion in the dark. They also learnt about the dangers facing the Rainforest and that there are still many tribes that are yet to be contacted.

Year 5 Classics: St Valentine’s Day

During our Latin lesson on Tuesday, we discovered the history and background of Valentine’s Day.

It all started back in the First Century AD, when the Emperor Claudius banned marriage because he believed it made soldiers weak and unable to fight; being married made them bad soldiers.

Valentine was a Roman priest who married men and women in secret. However, Claudius found out and put Valentine in jail and he was sentenced to death. Valentine then fell in love with the jailer’s daughter. On the day Valentine was meant to be killed, he wrote a letter to the daughter declaring his love and signed it “from your Valentine”.

From that day on, people started doing the same. Later, a Roman festival called the Lupercalia on February 14th brought boys and girls into marriage by choosing their names from a chest. Ever since these times, and into Christian times, St Valentine has been celebrated with people sending love letters and secret cards. We also made our own Valentine’s Day cards in our lesson, using Latin phrases and expressions… and sending them to everyone from our Mums and Dads to our pets!

Upper School Assembly: Internet Safety Assembly

Thursday’s assembly for Upper School dealt with staying safe online and using social media. Mr Stuckey and Mr Isaachsen came to talk to us about dealing with cyber bullying, spam messages and making sure we protect ourselves online.

We also learned whom we should go to for help, which has been our ongoing and underlying theme this half term with any types of difficulties. We were given different types of scenarios to consider, then we discussed them and decided what was the safest and most sensible course of action. Mr Isaachsen explained to us how we cannot believe what we are told about people online!

It was a very informative and interesting assembly; I hope all pupils will take the advice given and be very careful with their online “lives”, as we head into our half term break.

CRAFT CLUB We ALL became totally absorbed in decopatching this week at Craft Club! It is very relaxing and great fun to do. You rip special tissue paper and stick it down with glue, overlapping on the object as you go. The girls are each covering a secret keepsake box and as their quotes show, they are really enjoying the club. Once you start you REALLY can’t stop!! Mrs Barrett & Mrs Buxton.

After the excitement of the House Swimming Gala, we decided to make something simple, but delicious today: Chocolate Fridge Cake. We melted chocolate, butter and golden syrup then added crumbled biscuits, raisins, mini-marshmallows, chopped cherries and a Crunchie bar! We gave it a good mix and pressed it into a tray, ready to chill. White melted chocolate drizzled on top – job done! An easy, no-bake recipe with very tasty results!



The PALS Tutorial ANIMAL QUEST project has been introduced to Year 6 to teach them about how to organize a project. This is a project, which they are all required to complete.

Each pupil has chosen an animal they would like to investigate and gather information on. Pupils will need to do some research at home on the internet or in books. They have an Animal Quest booklet, which outlines what they have to do.

The final project can be typed, put in a powerpoint or hand written or a combination of both.

On return after half term, the pupils will have some time in school to work on the project, before the hand in date of 14th March. There will be prizes for the best projects.

Over half term - pupils could spend some time* on:

• Do research on the internet or in books at home

• Find some pictures or maps to include in the project

• Do sketches / drawings of chosen animal to include

• Create a few pages for the project e.g. facts about where the animal is found, what it looks like, what it eats, is it endangered etc.

Handwriting Club’s Spring Flowers

This term in Handwriting Club, as well as working on our handwriting in our booklets and folders, we have been practising our fine motor skills by making spring flowers. We started by tracing around the outline using large curves; this was tricky, as we had to hold the paper still at the same time. We then transferred the tracing onto card, which we cut out. The next step involved decorating them with tissue paper. The last step was to copy out a few lines from a poem using our best handwriting so they could be mounted together and decorate our board.

U10 A – Cheltenham College Netball Day

Eight of our Under 10 girls were lucky enough to attend a day of Netball in the form of a festival run by Cheltenham College. Along with several other Prep Schools, they were treated to coaching workshops and some mixed game play over the course of the morning. Specialist coaches, including Welsh Internationalist Rosie Pretorius, led all of the sessions. After a hearty lunch over at College they returned to the Sports Hall to watch the College 1st VII take on the Welsh U17 team. The game was fast paced and exciting, a great opportunity for our girls to see what top class Netball looks like. They had a fantastic day and left full of enthusiasm for the rest of the Netball season.

Team of the Week – U11 B

The girls played much more of a thinking game today. We focused on the speed of passes, our drives forward and our decision-making. The team realised that the quicker they moved into space, made their decisions, and passed, the easier it was to get the ball past the opposition. We tried to use more space and made much more of an effort to use the whole width of the netball court. As the team tried to drive forward into space, they understood that there was much more freedom to pass, with passes becoming more successful as a result. The girls worked much harder to mark the opposition, preventing many more passes being made by the other team and, on one occasion, creating a free pass from a ‘held ball’. Interceptions were very much better and more frequent so that we regained possession more often. Finally, having moved the ball forward into the shooting circle, our shooters were more ambitious at ‘having a go’, whilst movement in the ‘D’ was faster and more proactive. All in all, a really good match where the girls finally started putting together the training they have had this term. Well done, let’s hope that this is the start of a winning streak.

Following her outstanding performances at the District Cross Country events, Freya Coull (7H) was selected to run for Gloucestershire in the County Competitions. A few weeks ago she competed in Cardiff, and this weekend she was running in the South West Cross Country Championships in Wiltshire. She ran very well, finishing 28th out of 80 girls in the U13 category (Freya is only 11) and helped the Gloucestershire team win the trophy, beating the other six counties there. Well done Freya!!

HOUSE GALA

A hugely successful House Swimming Gala took place on Monday with everybody as usual really getting into the spirit of the day. The atmosphere on the poolside was electric and the House colours and banners on display in the designated holding areas just added to the friendly competitive spirit. Every single pupil from Years 3 to 8 swam in at least two races for their House in this fully co-educational event. We had swim squad swimmers to beginners, gold races to bronze races, woggle races to butterfly races, individual races and team relays, all culminating in an incredibly exciting full House Relay Race. The children must be commended for their exceptional behaviour on what was a very busy poolside, as well as their admirable ‘can do’ attitudes and their respect and support for other swimmers. As always with the House events, it was a closely run affair with the leaders changing all the time. In the end though, it was Sparta who came away victorius

Colts A VII at the IAPS South West Championship

After a slow start to the season the Colts A, Head of maths have hit form at the right time and headed down to Clifton with confidence and structure, determined to show how strong they are. After a 1-1 draw with King’s Taunton, the boys beat Sandroyd 1-0 and Hazelgrove 2-0 which meant we won the group. We then played Port Regis and lost 2-1 in a very tight game. The boys quickly bounced back and beat Monkton Coombe 3-0, leaving us with a game against Millfield to win the pool. Despite an outstanding performance we went down 2-0 to Millfield. Although the boys did not qualify for the National Finals they demonstrated that they are a real threat on the circuit this year and we look forward to them returning to IAPS in two years time to take the next step.

1st VII at the IAPS South West Championship

An early start saw a small squad arrive early in a misty and chilly Somerset field. We would need to play four games of ten minutes each in a pool of five. The early match against a strong St Hugh’s team helped our team set the tone for the day, creating chances by good quick passing and movement off the ball. In a very competitive game, we scored two goals, shutting out the St Hugh’s side. Our second encounter was against King’s Hall, who broke early and scored. The confidence remained high, and goals either side of half time saw us win 2-1.

This result allowed us to take on Exeter, knowing a win would get us in to the play off stages with a game in hand. Exeter defended bravely and could have caught on the break but a late goal ensured a reasonably comfortable victory despite the 1-0 score line.

The final pool match against Millfield would decide who would gain the better draw in the knockout stages. We had been reduced to eight fit players, having had an injury to our goalkeeper. In a very quick and intense game, we pressurised the opposition into making errors and this in turn gave us opportunities to score. We had several chances to take the lead but the little bit of luck needed in front of goal was missing. Teams who were packing up to leave stopped to watch the spectacle. Millfield scored and heads could easily have dropped, but we continued to press them and deny them space to play. It was an enormous effort from the team. This was on of the best performances I have witnessed from an U13 side from the Prep. There was a real buzz around the team. We had qualified from the pool and faced the Port Regis pool winners. The small squad was tiring, but lifted their game, having had only a short rest from the previous game and coming out winners 2-0.

Positions were decided in a three-way play off. We faced Millfield again and as legs tired, we conceded a couple of goals. The short rest before playing against All Hallows produced another fine passing display and a 2-0 victory to secure second spot at a return visit to Millfield for the National Finals on 19 March.

Our boys were a credit to the school and this was remarked on by the opposition staff who were very complimentary as to the manner in which the game was played and the behaviour both on and off the field.

Dear Parents

On Tuesday 10 February I held an assembly on ‘Rempstone Adventure Camp’. Rempstone is a camp that Mrs Baird and I attended when we were at our Prep Schools and at which we continue to volunteer every summer.

Rempstone is an Adventure Holiday for boys and girls in Years 6 to 11. It is during August and lasts for 10 days. As well as putting on a fun-filled programme of activities, games and visits, the camp encourages Christian values.
