Premier League • Also known in the UK as The Premiership is the top flight

league football clubs in England and Wales.• The tournament is considered by the International Federation

of Football History & Statistics FIFA as the strongest league in the last decade in Europe beating Spain's Primera Division and Italian Serie A are in second and third respectively.

Origins

• While European football had gone through good times in the 1970s and 1980s to the late 1980s British football was in a critical moment. The stadiums were in poor condition, the hooligans provoked riots in games and began to increase more and more in number, and the English clubs could not play in European competition following the Heysel tragedy in 1985, where 39 fans died.

• In 1992 the First Division teams renounced the Football League en masse and May 27, 1992 the Premier League was formed so limited company not dependent on the Football Association based in an office in the facilities that then the Football Association in Lancaster Gate. This meant the end of 104-year-old Football League that had operated until then with four divisions; the Premier League would operate as a single division, the first, and the Football League with the other three.

BIG FOUR *2000*

• in the mid-2000s was the domain of the clubs that made up the so-called "Big Four": Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. During this decade, and particularly from 2002 to 2009, these clubs have dominated the top four places in the league, giving these a place to compete in the UEFA Champions League

Development• In the 2007-08 season 20 teams participated. In 2007, the

league changed its name from "FA Premier League" to simply "Premier League". The Welsh club Swansea City promoted to the Premier League in the 2011-12 season, becoming the first non-English team to compete in this league. The August 20, 2011, the first league game was played outside England between Wigan Athletic and Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium located in Swansea, Wales.

Competition System

• Managed and controlled by the Football Association of England, there are 20 teams in the Premier League. During each season, each team faces with the rest twice in a double round-robin tournament, once at their home stadium and once in that of their opponents, for a total of 38 games for each team.
