WelcomeWarm greetings from SICOT!

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 39th Annual SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress in Montreal, Canada. SICOT has now evolved into the largest orthopaedic society in the world with more than 25, 000 corresponding members from 119 countries. The annual meeting offers a wonderful opportunity to showcase expertise and work to a worldwide audience and promote cross fertilisation of ideas. 2 | 39th SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress

Dear Friends and Fellow Orthopedic Surgeons from around the World,

We welcome you all to Montreal! Soyez les bienvenus à Montréal!

SICOT has seen remarkable development since its foundation on 10 October 1929 to become the global International Society for Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology it is in the world of today. From our original 12 member nations and five spoken languages, we have expanded to more than 110 member nations speaking well over 100 languages. SICOT presents orthopaedic surgeons from all

around the world the best opportunity to exchange knowledge and information and learn from each other’s experience.

Montreal is a multicultural city where East meets West and North meets South in an open and respectful society. Montreal is the most European of all North American cities, with its French language, culture and cuisine intermingling with more than 132 nationalities and well over 110 languages. As you can see, a little bit of you can be found in Montreal.

Your spouse and family will all enjoy our safe and lively city and our modern public transportation. Go discover the underground city, the Old Port and Old Montreal, the Olympic Stadium, the Mont Royal, the Casino and the Formula 1 racing track, all at a walking distance from the Palais de Congrès. Take some time to shop at St Catherine’s street boutiques or at the underground malls. A one hour 30 minute drive will take you to Ottawa and Québec City, along with the wonderful changing colours of the landscape in October. Stretch it a little more and you will be visiting Toronto and Niagara Falls!

Montreal is a turntable of innovation, renowned for its Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, Nanotechnology and Biomedical Engineering schools. We are proud of the amount of knowledge we are going to share with you. Our scientific programme has been designed by Vikas Khanduja and is comprehensive: a full Educational Day for starters, more than 120 scientific sessions and instructional course lectures, a Cadaver Lab for hands-on surgical training and a case-based fragility fracture osteoporosis symposium. It is a great opportunity for you to present your work in one of the free paper sessions and on top of that, we are putting together a cutting-edge exposition of current and future technologies from our partners in academia and industry. Get ready to ride in virtual reality, to enjoy real-time simulation and to touch and play with exciting new tools and implants that are in the pipeline for the near future in orthopaedic surgery.

So, spread the word: “all aboard this most exciting gathering of innovation and technology in orthopaedic surgery at the 39th SICOT meeting in Montreal!” We are waiting for you with open arms and a warm welcome, in the best Canadian way.

39th SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress | 3

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the SICOT Board of Directors and the Congress President, Dr Julio C Fernandes, it gives me great pleasure to welcome every single one of you to the 39th SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress to be held from the 10-13 October 2018. This is the second time the Congress has been held in Canada, and we are thrilled to be going back to the beautiful city of Montreal.

We are expecting upwards of 4000 participants to share in the exchange of expertise from both high- and low-tech orthopaedic surgery environments, and hope to engender an ethos of openness to learning from one another, no matter how

different our backgrounds.

We have been busy planning a diverse and thought-provoking programme. Over the two and a half days there will be over 50 instructional symposia from practice and research leaders as well as sessions from our partner societies. There will be space and time for discussion and participation, and we hope you will enjoy engaging in the topics. In addition, there will be around 40 free paper sessions, ten short free paper sessions and three plenary lectures from fantastic speakers: Dr Mohit Bhandari (Canada), Dr Alex Vaccaro (USA), and Professor Timothy Briggs (UK). Finally, we have planned an Educational Day for trainees, taking place the day before the conference begins on 9 October. This year the theme for the day will be ‘The Knee’ and the SICOT Diploma Exam will be available to take on the same day. We have also introduced a Knee Cadaveric course for the first time which will run everyday. We are confident that over the course of the three and a half days there will be something to whet everyone’s appetite!

Personally, I am looking forward to welcoming you all to what I believe will be our most enriching and stimulating Congress yet. It has been a joy to bring this programme together and the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal feels like the perfect place to hold this participatory event.

Very Best Wishes Vikas Khanduja Scientific Programme Chairman, SICOT
