Dear Colleagues,

We cordially invite you to participate in this year’s 14th International Congress of Mucosal Immunology (ICMI 2009) –Reconciling Immunity, Tolerance and Inflammation at the Mucosal Interface, July 5-9 at the Marriott Boston Copley Place, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. This year’s ICMI will be an outstanding scientific and professional success, so make your plans to join us in Boston!

ICMI 2009 is the only meeting where basic science, clinical researchers and industry researchers working at mucosal surfaces can meet to discuss the common and unique pathways of immunity and inflammation at different sites in the body.

The Goals of ICMI 2009 are to:• Exchange research information on the basic function of the mucosal immune system in the context of

mucosal diseases

• Provide an international perspective and better understanding of the current research in mucosal immunology

• Describe recent developments in the application of basic research to treat mucosal diseases

• Bring young investigators and those from developing countries in contact with leading international researchers in mucosal immunology

• Identify new areas where research will be needed in the next few years

The Organizing Committee and International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC) have worked hard to assure that the latest information in our field will be presented by our colleagues from around the world. Sunday evening will kick off with an Opening Keynote Session and Welcome Reception. On Monday morning, the Innate Immunity plenary session, featuring Thad Stappenbeck, MD, PhD, Sergio Lira, MD, PhD, Averil Ma, MD, PhD, Graham Lord, MA, FRCP, PhD and Anuradha Ray, PhD, is a can’t miss.

Microbial products not only have the ability to modulate immunity and inflammation at mucosal surfaces where they are in immediate contact with the host, but they can have roles at distant sites, via the blood, as in HIV infection, arthritis and brain inflammation. Tuesday offers a state of the art plenary session on the Understanding of Mucosal Disease and leads into Wednesday’s brainstorming plenary session featuring Regulatory Cells which Control Mucosal Immunity & Inflammation. This session features many renowned investigators including Warren Strober, MD, Rachel Caspi, PhD, Casey Weaver, MD, Hilda Cheroutre, PhD, Juan Lafaille, PhD and Yasmine Belkaid, PhD. Thursday will wrap-up with two plenary sessions: Epithelium and Novel Cytokines at Mucosal Surfaces – the latter session featuring talks by Jo Viney, PhD, Kevin Maloy, PhD, Dan Littman, MD, PhD, Dario Vignali, PhD, Atsushi Mizoguchi, MD, PhD, and Steven Ziegler, PhD.

Consider attending the ICMI 2009 Pre-Congress Workshop: Microbes & Mucosal Immunity on Sunday, June 5. SMI, in partnership with the Digestive Health Center of Excellence at the University of Virginia, is sponsoring a comprehensive introductory course describing the impact of mucosal diseases on society and the basic principles of research that address these problems.

We look forward to seeing you in Boston!

Sincerely,

1

The Society for Mucosal Immunology (SMI) was formed in 1987 to advance basic and clinical research and education related to the field of mucosal immunology. Today the Society represents a diverse group of more than 500 scientists and clinicians from 37 countries.

While most immunologists typically study immune responses in the spleen, lymph nodes or blood, mucosal immunologists focus on the sites in contact with the external environment that are exposed to continuous antigenic bombardment. The principal tissues involved are the gut and the lung, but there is also major interest in the upper respiratory tract, urogenital tract and the eye. These surfaces are important as the first line of defense against an array of pathogenic microbes. Remarkably, the mucosal immune system in health can distinguish between pathogens and the commensal flora and innocuous dietary antigens, and mount an appropriate response to each type of challenge. The gut is also the major lymphoid organ in the body, containing the majority of antibody secreting cells and 70% of the lymphoid tissue.

Deciphering the cues which separate tolerance from effective immunity at mucosal surfaces lies at the core of SMI. The corollary of this, however, is that many pathogens successfully colonize mucosal surfaces, or use mucosal surfaces to enter the tissues, so elucidating how these pathogens do this, and the mechanisms of effective immunity remain important. At the same time, the challenges of protecting mucosal surfaces from infection through vaccination immediately come up against the problem of tolerance.

The revolution in mucosal immunology/microbiology in the last few years is evidence of the appreciation of the important role of the commensal flora in mucosal immunity. The microbial biome and its role in health and disease is only now becoming understood. While it is widely accepted that tissue damaging immune responses can occur from foods such as wheat and cows milk, it is now obvious that inappropriate immune responses, often genetically determined, are involved in inflammatory bowel disease.

SMI provides forums for the exchange of cross-disciplinary research between clinicians and basic scientists which allows paradigms established at a particular mucosa surface to be tested at another. We help formulate policy relevant to the profession and research work environments; and learning opportunities for professional in the field. Members of SMI receive a complimentary subscription to the Society’s official journal, Mucosal Immunology. Members also receive discounts on registration for SMI sponsored meetings and have access to the Members Only section of the website which includes a searchable Member Directory, a protocol section authored by mucosal immunologists, a Member Forum for idea and question exchanges, links to funding agencies and access to post jobs and resumes and browse current career opportunities.

DescriptionThe Society for Mucosal Immunology and the Digestive Health Center at the University of Virginia are hosting a comprehensive introductory course describing the impact of mucosal diseases on society and the current research techniques that are used to address these problems. The goal of this NIH-sponsored course is to provide trainees with a background covering the challenges and technical approaches relevant to mucosal immunity to help them plan their future professional development.

Target AudienceThe program is directed towards undergraduate and graduate students in biology, microbiology, immunology, medicine, veterinary medicine, math & statistics, and biomedical engineering; medical residents; and post-doctoral research/clinical fellows interested in diseases of mucosal tissues such as the digestive tract. Lectures and discussions will be led by an international cadre of scientists who have achieved successful careers in academics or industry related to mucosal health.
