Preliminary Announcement(Draft)/080515 APCS2009 The 9th Asian Pacific Conference on Shell and Spatial Structures May 27-29, 2009 Noyori Conference Hall, Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan About APCS The Asian Pacific Conference on Shell and Spatial Structures (APCS) has been originated from the Korean-Japan colloquium on Shell and Spatial Structures co-organized by the late Prof. Yasuhiko Hangai and Prof. Taek-Jin Kwun and its first activity was held at Cheju, Korea in 1984. This colloquium has been planned to provide the working forum to discuss and exchange the traditions and the innovations in the concept, analysis, design and construction of shell and spatial structures. After the first colloquium, successive colloquia have been held alternately in Japan and Korea triennially up to the 4th one. The 2nd conference was held at Tokyo in August 1987 and the 3rd in Korea in August 1990. Following to these, the 4th was held at Tokyo in October 1993 and became the joint conference in cooperation with IASS. The name of the conference was changed from the former into the present one, Asian Pacific Conference on Shell and Spatial Structures, at the 5th conference at Beijing, China, 1996. Ever since that, APCS has been held at Seoul in 2000, at Taipei in 2003 and at Beijing again in 2006. The 9th APCS will be held at Nagoya, Japan in 2009. The conference site is the Noyori Conference Hall of Nagoya University. Objectives The conference provides an opportunity for architects, structural engineers and researchers to exchange information, expertise and technology related to the analysis, design and construction of shell and spatial structures.

Themes Papers are invited from professional works in the fields of shells, membranes, space frames, tension structures, composite and hybrid structural systems, high-rise buildings and other types of structures. In addition to the presentation of papers, there will be some invited lectures by prominent speakers. Time Schedule November 30, 2008 Abstract February 28, 2009 Final paper March 31, 2009 Final announcement March 31, 2009 Early registration May 27-29, 2009 Conference Language The official language is English. No simultaneous translation will be provided for the technical session. Proceedings The proceedings will be published and made available to all delegates at the conference and will be distributed during the registration. The proceedings will be purchased after the conference by special order. Registration Registration fee for the conference will be about 30,000 Yen, if the payment is credited on or before March 31, 2009 and 35,000 Yen after this date. Special registration fee for students is available, 10,000 Yen before March 1, 2009 and 15,000 Yen after the date. Advance and on-site registration include a set of conference proceedings, admission to technical sessions, conference reception, lunch, banquet and coffee services during the session breaks. Accompanying persons may register at the reduced rate of 15,000 Yen. Registration as an accompanying person will include the same privilege except for the set of conference proceedings.

Cancellation Cancellation received in writing by April 15, 2009 will receive 50% refund with the conference proceedings. No refund will be issued after this date. A lot of hotels in Nagoya city with the variety of price ranges will be available. Tour and social programs Technical visits to places of interest, tours and enjoyable social programs with your spouse or accompanying persons are being planned. Detailed information will be available in the registration. City of Nagoya Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan. Located on the Pacific coast in the Chubu region on central Island, it is the capital of Aichi Prefecture and has one of Japan's major ports along with those of Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Yokohama, Chiba, and Hakata. It is also the center of Japan's third largest metropolitan region, known as the Chukyo Metropolitan Area. As of 2007, Chukyo Metropolitan Area has more than 9 million people, of which 2.23 million live in the city of Nagoya. The weather of Nagoya in May is comfortable and clear. Average temperature of 18 degree in Centigrade and high blue sky makes Nagoya a very pleasant city to visit. Venue The APCS conference will be held at the Noyori Conference Hall of Nagoya University, which was constructed in commemoration of the research achievement of Dr. Ryoji Noyori who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2001. This 2001 year is the year of the IASS annual conference held in Nagoya. This APCS conference will become meaningful to the same extent as the Nagoya conference of IASS.
