TRANSCRIPT
PRELIM - PETROLEUM REFINERY, LIFE CYCLE INVENTORY, MODEL Joule Bergerson | March 11, 2015
Objectives
Motivation
• Diversity of crude quality and refinery configurations
• Current life cycle-based GHG models to inform policy lack model
detail to capture this variability
Objective
• More detailed investigation of the impacts of crude quality and
refinery configuration on energy use and GHG emissions at
refineries
Opportunities for reducing emissions
• Reduce the amount of hydrogen consumed • Increase hydrogen production efficiency • Lower the GHG emissions intensity of hydrogen
production • Capture carbon dioxide from the most
concentrated, highest volume refinery sources
Additional Insights
• PRELIM continually strives for balance between 1. Transparency and a systems perspective 2. Recognition that refineries are unique,
complex and dynamic • Extensive evaluation conducted and further
validation exercises are sought • Data is an overriding issue for PRELIM
Future Research Priorities
• A “fixed” case • More detailed assessment of refinery products
• refinery fuel gas • asphalt • bunker fuel
• Statistical analysis to explore variability and uncertainty of refinery operations and GHG emissions
