PREHISTORIC ANTROPHOMORPHIC

1. Fragment of clay idol (statuette). The fragment depicts the upper part of a female figure. Head, arms and legs are missing. Even though the head can not be reconstructed, there are several possibilities for reconstructing the lower part of the statuette. It may have been a seated figure or a sculpturesque decoration on the shoulder of a vessel. Conversely the idol could also have been a standing figure. Inv. Nr.: GY/6408. Middle Neolithic, earliest phase Linear Band Culture, 5400–5200 BC Site: Distr. III, 14 Szépvölgyi Road, 2007 M: 7,5 x 3,5 cm

2. Bottle-shaped vessel, with anthropomorphic features. This newly discovered vessel is very important because it does not derive from a settlement-feature but comes from a grave in which a couple, probably killed ritually, was interred. This kind of ritual burial is so far unparalleled both in the Transdanubian region and on the Great Hungarian Plain. The presence of the vessel in the grave further demonstrates the cultic uses to which this type of vessel was put. Inv. Nr.: GY/2800/240. Middle Period of the Neolithic, Transdanubian-Linear Band ceramic, Zseliz Period, 5200–5000/4900 BC Site: Distr. XI, SKÁLA, 2007 M: 14,2 x 11 cm

3. Fragment of globular vessel with depiction of a human face below rim. Anthropomorphic faced-vessels were produced in a standardized way. They were influenced by the vessels of the Szakállhát-culture (Great Hungarian Plain) and first appeared in the Transdanubian region in the earliest phase of the Band Linear Culture and spread during in the later Zseliz phase. The “M”-shaped incised face becomes characteristic in the period, and was widely employed on ceramics from the southern part of the Carpathian-basin to central and western Germany. These vessels were probably used in some cult practice, placed in a domestic shrine or ”cult-corner” of the house and are especially common on sites in and around
