Greetings. Once again Pregnancy
Center and Clinic of the Low Country (PCCLC), ended the year in the black. Same is attributable to several factors; contributions from supporters and friends; funding from local charitable organizations; local and state grants; PCCLC fundraisers. PCCLC continues to operate the two clinics; one in Hilton Head Island, and the second, a Mobile unit in southern Beaufort/Jasper counties. Both clinics offer identical services; Hilton Head Clinic-Monday to Wednesday 9am-4pm, Thursdays 10am-5pm. The Mobile Clinic days are Monday in Hardeeville at Price Wise Supermarket and Wednesday in Bluffton at Hwy 278/#1 Burnt Church Road; both operate from 10am-4:30pm. Ten is the number of employed staff; 3 full-time; 2 part-time; 4 job share (Nurses); 1 Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife (APRN). Dr. Patrick Jordan continues to bless us through his pro bono job as Medical Director.
Client Services Include…
Free confidential testing for pregnancy
Free early Adequate Prenatal Care (APC) for the first 16 weeks of gestation
Free Prenatal vitamins
Limited Obstetrical ultrasounds
Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
Prescription for STI treatment
Comprehensive information regarding pregnancy
Support Group Meetings
Adoption information and/or referrals to licensed agencies
Post abortion Bible Studies
Three thousand three hundred thirty seven (3,337) clients received various types of assistance in 2015 from both clinics. Of that number, 1,315 were recipi-ents of various types of medical care; 460 of whom initiated early Adequate Prenatal Care (APC); 217 walked in for material assistance; and 1,805 via tele-phone consultation. Although not the most productive way to interact with a traumatized woman, the tele-phone is many times our only option through which to offer our free services.
Once in the clinic, the ultrasound picture reveals the
reality of life in the womb. Depending upon the gesta-
tional age of the fetus, women may be exposed to the
early pictures of a beating heart or those of Olympic
gymnasts performing in the womb! Anecdotally, 98% of
our clients who are abortion minded/vulnerable, and,
who opt to see the ultrasound, elect to continue the
pregnancy. Even those who walk out (it’s their choice),
may return to say that they went to other clinics to exer-
cise their choice, however, they had to wrestle with the
image of even a rudimentary beating heart. Our nurses
intake the clients, teach, interact with them in relation to
all aspects of the pregnancy in preparation for the
monthly clinic day with the Nurse Practitioner.
Age: Women 20-29- 54%; ≥ 30-36% constitute the larg-
est group served. According to school personnel, the teens
do not access our services because they hide the pregnan-
cy until it’s too late for our assistance.
Race: Hispanic/Asian- 73%; African American- 14%; Cau-
casian- 13%.
Marital Status: 56% list themselves as single, and 39% as
married. This latter terminology can have several interpre-
tations for the client.
Pregnancy Testing: 622- of which 460 were positive (74%). The clients with positive tests, had their first prena-tal visit of which 183 (40%) continued in the 16 week pro-gram. Prenatal Vitamins: (428) distributed to every positive client regardless of whether or not they continue the program. Limited Obstetrical Ultrasounds: 349 administered- only through the first 16 weeks of gestation. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI): Are a part of the laboratory work-up on each client who continues in the program. Few people request these tests. English as a Second Language (ESL): Classes are of-fered to women of several ethnicities who want to become fluent in English. Support Group Meetings: Includes spiritual emphasis meetings and speakers from the local nonprofits, CODA, Beaufort County Alcohol and Drug Abuse…. who provide relevant and valuable education about their resources. Attendance at these meetings entitles the client to receive a free ‘layette’ of beautiful items to welcome the new baby. Walk-ins: Clients/non clients who access assistance for peer counseling through requests for material needs.
