Driving Down Fuel Consumption

All fleets are challenged to reduce fuel costs, but most solutions do little more than crunch speed and mileage numbers and let managers deliver the bad news. They don’t deliver value in the form of real operational improvements.

One trucking firm asked their Predix team to respond to a U.S. Department of Energy finding that aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and brak-ing) at highway speeds can lower gas mileage by 33%. To modify driver habits and increase mileage, the team designed a unique, three-tiered behavioral engineering solution:

1. Create alerts that are triggered when vehicles reach a certain RPM or speed.

2. Monitor overall driver aggression (including braking and accelerometer sen-sor data) and fuel efficiency.

3. Rank drivers based on efficient driving tactics, providing drivers with perfor-mance data, and socializing scoring within the organization.

Route Optimization for Big Rigs

Another Predix solution identified a crucial weakness in the standard FMS trip planner used by a national operator. The fleet’s management reported that the worst mileage of most trips was occurring in the “last mile” segments, and that ETAs slipped badly during these same last mile segments. The fleet’s FMS route optimizer contributed to the problem by providing routes and guidance meant for passenger vehicles. Its instructions for cars frequently mis-directed large commercial vehicles, wasting fuel and time; and its scheduled delivery ETAs were inaccurate.

A machine-learning approach was used to identify optimal last mile routes (as well as other route segments). This approach enables fleet vehicles to report on their own routes and progress. Predix can correlate the route data with all vehicle metrics, apply analytics, and recommend the real-time routing options that work best. With Predix, the learning lives on: the results of every variation in a route can be monitored and reflected in constantly updated routing guid-ance. Plus, the fleet operator has the opportunity to monetize its truck-specif-ic routing service and data.
