FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT—MARCH 1, 2020

Happy Retirement: Retirement is a new beginning, and that means closing the book on one chapter in order to begin the next. After spending 31 years of her life here at Precious Blood, Penny Blandford has announced her retirement to take care of her mother and step-father who are sick. I know this must have been a hard decision to make as Precious Blood and the ministry here was part of Penny’s life and daily routine. Please remember that retirement is a different way of life, with new challenges and opportuni-ties. One needs to adapt and adjust to this new lifestyle, and that takes time, effort, and creativity. On behalf of Precious Blood Church I express my heartfelt thanks to Penny for her work and ministry here

at Precious Blood and we wish her many blessings for her retirement. As a parish we will gather on Saturday, March 28th at 6:00 pm in the Parish Hall to express our thanks to Penny.

New Maintenance Person: When I first came to Precious Blood I approached Mike Howard and asked if he could be our maintenance person for Precious Blood. Mike told me that he will be happy to volunteer and take care of mainte-nance till I found a new maintenance person for the parish. Well it took me 3 and a half years to find someone. Mike has been excellent in his duties and very faithful. I want to thank Mike Howard for all the time and energy that he spent here at Precious Blood in taking care of the parish. Mike Langdon will be our new Maintenance person for the parish who will start the 2nd of March.

Parish Mission: We welcome Fr. Tom Sullivan from the Fathers of Mercy who will be doing our Lenten Mission from Sunday the 1st of March to Wednesday the 4th. The Mission during these four days starts at 6:00pm with confessions and the talk with Eucharistic adoration will be from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. This will be a great start to our Lenten journey and I invite you to bring someone with you to the mission.

Indian Trip: I had a great trip to India. The weather was perfect, it was in 80s. I had the opportunity to baptize two of my cousins, concelebrate the wedding of my cousin and most importantly to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of my uncle Fr Philip. I had a fantastic time with my parents, siblings, nieces and nephews and have created lots of fun memories. Thank you for all your prayers. It was lots of fun and joy to have had 5 of our people from Owensboro going with me, especially Guy and Linda Connor from our parish. I learned during this trip that Guy Connor is a good dancer as he was the center of attraction in many events. As most of you know, President Donald Trump and Melanie Trump visited India on the 24th and 25th of this month. I told some people why President Trump went to India is to clear up the mess made by Guy Connor. Just for fun.

Heralds of Good News: The society of Heralds of Good News was established on October 14th 1984 by the late Fr Jose Kaimlett. The purpose of the society is to train seminarians to priesthood and send them where ever there is a need. Be-sides parishes and pastoral ministry we also have catholic schools, home for the elderly, orphanages, home for the desti-tute etc. I joined the society of Heralds of Good News in 1998. There are close to 500 priests in the society working in different parts of the world. Every year the diocese of Owensboro allows us to do a second collection in the parishes where Heralds of Good News priests serve. There are 6 priests that serve in the diocese of Owensboro from Heralds of Good News. If you would like to help the work of Heralds of Good News you are most welcome to write a check to Pre-cious Blood and mention in the memo for Heralds of Good News and put it in the regular collection the weekend of March 7th and 8th. There will also be envelopes in the pews. Thanks for your generosity.

Lenten Fasting: A bartender notices that every evening, without fail, one of his patrons orders three beers. After several weeks of noticing this pattern, the bartender asks the man why he always orders three beers. The man says, “I have two brothers who have moved away to different countries. We promised each other that we would always order an extra two beers whenever we drank as a way of keeping up the family bond.” Several weeks later, noticing that the man only or-dered two beers, the bartender said, “Please accept my condolences on the death of one of your brothers. You know, the two beers and all…” The man replied, “You’ll be happy to hear that my two brothers are alive and well… It’s just that I, myself, have decided to give up drinking for Lent.”

God's blessings, Fr. Suneesh Mathew
