TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 5, 2021
Scripture lessons summarized: In the first reading of this Sunday the prophet Isiah reminds us that God’s eyes are constantly focused on the helpless. “He comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing.” in today’s second reading James the apostle gives us some basic and challenging principles of social justice. He exhorts Christians to show no par-tiality based on external appearance and to practice God’s “preferential option” for the poor. He warns the faithful against scorning or shaming the poor while showing special consideration to the rich. Today’s Gospel describes how Jesus, by healing a deaf man with speech impediment,
fulfilled Isaiah’s Messianic prophecy, “The eyes of the blind shall be opened and the ears of the deaf un-stopped.” The ailments listed by Isaiah are symbolic of our interior illnesses: blindness to the needs of our neighbor, unwillingness to hear God’s voice and the inability to speak words of praise, apology, forgiveness, and gratitude. Through this miracle story, Mark also reminds us that no one can be a follower of the Lord without reaching out to the helpless. Let us lend Jesus our hands to give the touch that heals the sick. Let us lend Jesus our tongues to speak to the spiritually hungry through us. Let us lend Jesus our hearts to touch the lives of people in our day through us.
The Touch of the Master’s Hand: In the poem, “The Touch of the Master’s Hand,” the story of the auction-ing of an old, dusty violin. The violin was about to be sold for a mere $3 when a grey-haired man stepped for-ward, picked it up, dusted it off, tuned it and began to play. The man played such sweet music that, when he finished, the bidding jumped into the thousands of dollars. What transformed the dusty old violin into a pre-cious instrument? The touch of the Master’s hand. — The same “touch of the Master’s hand” continues to transform our lives today. By God’s touch we become His instruments to accomplish the marvelous works. Let us allow the Lord to touch us and empower us every day so that we can be his hands and voices to the less fortunate and to the needy.
Blessed Frederic Ozanam: Was born on April 23rd 1813 in Milan, Italy. Early in life, he imbibed from his parents the humane touch of concern for the poor and the needy. He was an ardent fan of St Vincent DePaul. In order to serve the poor and the needy he founded a charity organization which he named after his favorite saint St. Vincent DePaul. Lot of people think that the society of Vincent DePaul was founded by St Vincent DePaul but it was founded by Blessed Frederic Ozanam. Today the SVP has nearly 50,000 conferences spread across the five continents. As we honor Frederic Ozanam on September 7th we thank and appreciate all our Vincentians who work in our St Vincent De Paul office. Thank you for your love and care to the needy around us. And thanks to all the parishioners for your continuous generosity to St. Vincent DePaul So-ciety of our parish.
Second Collection: We have been always so generous to the needy. The country of Hattie has recently expe-rienced Earthquakes which brought a lot of damages to the country. Our Diocese has decided to take up a sec-ond collection in every parish and send to Hattie. We will have a second collection on the weekend of 11th and 12th of this month. Please write the check to Precious Blood Parish and we will write a one total check to the diocese and The Diocese will then forward 100% of all funds received for Haiti to the USCCB’s Emer-gency Disaster Fund.
The new hearing aid: An elderly gentleman had had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor, and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentle-man to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” The gentleman replied, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!”
