“At the age of 39, I decided I wanted to dosomething new, a vocation where I would learnsomething new on a daily basis and I wouldn’tget bored. After discussing my options with mywife and family, I decided to try nursing as acareer.

I joined the nurse bank as a HealthcareAssistant for a year and a half to gain insightinto the nursing profession. Alongside doingthis, I went to night school and sat three HigherEducation Foundation Courses which allowedmy entry onto the BSc (Adult) Nursing degreeprogramme at Northumbria.

I won’t say that starting university was easy,it was a major lifestyle change, and collegedoesn’t really prepare you for the level of workand commitment expected from you. But Ifound everyone at Northumbria very helpful andso friendly I soon settled in. I found myself ina tutor group of 22 girls and no men and myclassmates were all around 20 years old! Ithought to myself ‘how am I meant to fit inhere’? But it turns out that no-one knew eachother, and everyone was nervous too. I soonwas ‘adopted’ by three of my classmates, andthe four of us have been inseparable for thepast three years, helping and supporting eachother’s endeavours.

There have been highs and lows, mainly highsthough, especially the birth of my son when Ihad just started second year, and after threeyears I have qualified with a nursing degree asa Staff Nurse and have started my new career. My advice to anyone, young or mature, whois considering a nursing career is to go for it,because it has been a great ride, I have learnedso much, made great friends and now I have acareer, not just a job.” st

Northumbria University is thefirst university in the UK toreceive such accreditation. These programmes aim toproduce highly skilled andknowledgeable nurses who areable to respond imaginativelyto healthcare needs andaccept responsibility andaccountability for theirprofessional practice.

The programmes have been designed inresponse to recent changes to thestandards required for education by theNursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) andtherefore are offered within a framework ofmodules leading to a range of differentacademic awards (BSc, PG Dip andthrough to MSc). They are dependentupon previous experience and academicachievement. For example, a schoolleaver with 280 tariff points and a fewweeks volunteer experience in a schoolwill need to complete a three yearundergraduate programme to be able toregister as a children’s nurse. Alternatively,a psychology graduate who has beenworking for a mental health charity fortwo years will be able to complete apostgraduate award and register as amental health nurse within a shorterperiod. There are also opportunities forapplicants with other qualifications andexperience (such as mature students withmany years experience working in healthor social care environments) to have theirprior learning credited.

Programme structure As students must select which field ofnursing they wish to study (adult, child, learning disability or mental health) allprogrammes will begin with a theoreticalmodule and a practice learningexperience, which will provide an

introduction to that field of nursing. Inaddition, the first year of all programmeswill develop students’ understanding ofthe essential skills of nursing such ascommunication with patients and theircarers and infection control. The first yearof the programmes will also ensure thatstudents are confident in core subjectssuch as physiology, study skills, communication and understandingresearch. Students on all programmeswill also have the opportunity to learnwith students from other fields of nursingand other professions both in smallgroup activities in the class room andthe skills centre.

The second and third year of theprogrammes continue with more fieldspecific modules, which will furtherdevelop students understanding of thehealth care needs of their client group. The core subject modules ensure that allnurses complete the programme with abasic understanding of all aspects ofnursing practice. Practice learningopportunities are designed to consolidatelearning. In the final part of the programmeall students will also undertake aninternship experience to prepare them forpractice as a registered nurse. Studentson undergraduate programmes willundertake a dissertation on a topic relatedto their role as a nurse, whilst thoseundertaking shorter postgraduateprogrammes have the opportunity tofurther develop their application ofresearch to practice.

Each year is structured into blocks ofstudy weeks followed by blocks ofpractice, with an overall ratio of theory topractice weeks of 1:1 over a 45 week year(seven weeks holiday per year pro rata). For practice learning experiences studentsare allocated to a ‘home’ or ‘base’ Trust;students should note that suchexperiences will involve shift work whichmay include weekends and night duty.

I have recently been appointed asStudent Information Officer (SIO) for theNorth East Region by the Royal Collegeof Nursing (RCN), and the role will staywith me until I qualify. My main duty is tosignpost students to useful informationand advice from within and outside theRCN. Issues are to do with studentswhilst in university and out on practiceplacements, such as uniform policies, dealing with dyslexia, dyspraxia anddyscalculia, and dealing with bullyingand harassment, overall helpingstudents to get the best from theirpractice placements and time atuniversity. We all know that as studentnurses it can be difficult to know whereto go with some problems, so my role

can hopefully provide such studentswith a friendly face to come to foradvice.

From this role, I hope to achieve agreater insight into my own abilities andmanagement skills. My role will involveattending various meetings, studydays and local events which I hope willlead to me developing a strongerunderstanding of the work the RCNprovides its members, and understandthe wider current political and socialissues affecting nursing. There aremany resources available on the RCN’swebsite that I was previously unawareof, and I would like to promote and seeother students made aware of the valueof such materials.

Why did you decide to studyMidwifery?

Working as a Nursery Nurse for 20years, mostly within the healthcaresector, I was fortunate enough towork alongside some excellentmidwives and nurses who inspiredme to make the step towards acareer change and midwifery wasalways the first choice.

What has been your mostmemorable experience of thecourse so far?

Witnessing and assisting at waterbirths, one in the community andthe other in the hospital setting. You just feel so privileged to bepart of such a special experience.

What piece of advice would yougive to students thinking aboutcoming onto your course?

Get as much information as youcan about midwifery (both positiveand negative) so you are sure thatit is for you – then take each day asit comes as there will be lows aswell as highs but it is all worth it!

Where do you see your careerin five years time?

Ideally practicing as a midwife inAustralia and still enjoying it!

What appealed to you aboutNorthumbria University?

I had heard about the University fromfriends and decided to come to theopen day. I had been to other universityopen days but the atmosphere wasbrilliant and I loved the Universitysetting, especially the Clinical Skills building.

Why did you decide to studyphysiotherapy?

In primary school I had a friend who had cerebral palsy and I was alwaysinterested in activities he got to do with the physiotherapist, includinghydrotherapy and soft play. From then on I always had my focus onphysiotherapy and this was furtherencouraged by work experience and my own need for physiotherapy as aresult of a cruciate ligament repair.

What do you like about the course?

I think that the course strikes the rightbalance between clinical placementsand university work. In addition, I likethe fact that revision is made fun bypracticing in small peer groups, so younever feel alone or left behind.

Do you have the opportunity for anywork placements during your course?

Yes, the physiotherapy undergraduatecourse includes a compulsory electiveplacement where students get tochoose where they go. Fortunately, I have been able to secure a placementat Great Ormond Street Hospital which I am really looking forward too.

What piece of advice would you giveto students thinking about comingonto your course?

Physiotherapy is an amazingprofession, and it is definitely not all just about sport and massage.

Jassi Sodhi MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-registration)

What has been your mostchallenging moment so far?

I have found the placements challengingbut in very much a positive way. Eachplacement is different so you have toadapt to the field of healthcare, type ofpatient/service user and nature of theassessments/treatments given.

What do you want to do when yougraduate?

There are many opportunities open tonewly qualified physiotherapists, I amvery much keeping my options openwith regards to where I work but I wouldlove have a rotational job in one ofNewcastle’s hospitals, developing myknowledge and skills in a broad range of fields.

Where do you see your career in five years time?

I would like to be a seniorphysiotherapist working in neuro-rehabor paediatrics within one of the NorthEast’s well-respected hospitals.

What piece of advice would you giveto students thinking about comingonto your course?

Have a good read about the role of a physiotherapist in modern dayhealthcare. It’s not all sports injuries and massage!

What was it about the course that appealed?

I previously worked as a paramedic inthe Army. During this time, I worked in Iraq and I met some OperatingDepartment Practitioners (ODPs) there. I wasn’t sure what the role of an ODPwas, but after talking to them aboutwhat they did, it sounded like somethingI wanted to get into. The ODP coursehas a very ‘hands on’ approach, andthere are a lot of practical skills involvedwhich suits the person that I am, as Iprefer to be active and participating inthings. Being an ODP can also beexciting in emergency situations, evenmore so than being a paramedic in myold job, which also suits my character. I see myself as a caring person and Ienjoy helping people and I thought thiswould be the right choice for me.

Did you have the opportunity for any work placements duringyour course?

Yes, the majority of the course was onplacements because of the practicalskills that we needed to develop inorder to become an ODP. My favouriteplacement was anaesthetics, as Ienjoyed dealing with the patients whilstthey were awake, and there are a lot of practical skills to be learnt in thisdepartment. This placement reallyencompassed the whole ethos of theODP course and I enjoyed it immensely.

What was the most challengingthing?

It was a challenge to balance theacademic work we needed to complete, with the practical side of the course, asa lot of time was spent on placement. But I feel happy that I managed toovercome this and enjoy the course.
