■Opening address:Takaaki Shimizu (Chairman of the Board of Directors, IAUD) I hope this pre-event helps people understand about UD and leads actions of creating shared value which includes the point of view for industrial creation in Chubu area, growing tourism and regional creation, upgrade of urban foundation which strong in large scale natural disasters. Moreover, I want to introduce those achievement on the 6th International Conference for Universal Design in Nagoya 2016 in December.

■Greeting:Her Imperial Highness Princess Yohko (Patron of IAUD)

You must have heard my father’s often repeated message: “There is no one who is one hundred per cent disabled or anyone who has absolutely no disability.” I was brought up with that conviction. I would just like to add, that is why we need to know who we are, and connect and support and help each other. It is important to know ourselves and the others and we need to be borderless in all for UD. It is also important that we tell our thoughts each other. I would like IAUD members to discuss sufficiently.

■Greeting:Junko Nishigaki (Director, Design Policy Office, Creative Industries Division,

Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) There is increasing interest in UD for Tokyo Olympic Paralympic Games in 2020. It is important that Japan gives examples of the urban development and nation building which aims all people to live safely and peacefully. It became more important for all industry to activate various social system or local by design. We need the point of view in UD, so we want to support efforts of IAUD continuously.

■Greeting:Hideaki Omura (Governor of Aichi Prefecture) I want Aichi prefecture to be the top region where makes all people feel wealth and vividly play an active part. Aichi prefecture has published the catchword: “Heart of Japan” on 2015. We appeal that Aichi is also the place of technology and tradition. It is necessary that we make the friendly environment for all people, so we develop the region and the urban from the point of view in UD.

■Greeting:Kozo Hagino (Mayor of Nisshin City)

I will devote to working for the town to be developed and the city become more full of vigor, heathy and broad-minded for local people.

■Keynote Speech 1:“UD Education in Nisshin City for Practical Three Years” Hiromi Miyamichi (Head teacher of Municipal Takenoyama elementary school at Nisshin City)

Not only our school holding “the practical welfare lesson” for all fourth grade children in the city by collaborating with The Nisshin city welfare council, but also we give the lesson of UD. We aim to children to be learned about the school architecture and to be experienced UD in school. After we explain the process of building a new school and definition about UD, we hold the recital of school survey which children find the UD in school as they hold an 80cm string (the width of a passage for wheelchair on the barrier free law) in our UD class. The important effects of UD lessons are these lessons give children

an opportunity. Children can experience about many things through the five senses in school. This opportunity will make their mind broadened and so that they will more interested in around school , Japan, all over the world. Carrying out UD lessons in collaborating with Nisshin City Administrarion since opening of school became beneficial opportunity to us to look back our school facility and surrounding environment. We became more conscious about our blessed environment. ■Keynote Speech 2:“The Epoch of Design” Kazuo Kimura (Dean, School of Media and Design, Nagoya University of Arts and

Sciences) Nagoya city put forward the aim of “urban development by design” and “design” as keyword. Nagoya city has also resolved that Nagoya as “design city” and the active practical use of design. Design was introduced after war, and has expanded its range of “color, shape, pattern” into new region (universal, eco, sustainability, user-experience and so on). Recently, thoughts of design thinking draw much attention. These thoughts aim to utilize the idea or the development method by designer into service, business or engineering. Many observations, wide range and free debates, quick modeling and

the things which made with careful considerations are achieving great results in many fields. Many observations, wide range and free debates are especially important. Design plays important roles and has a responsibility because which spread in human action, life, society, city, civilization, environment and so on.

■Special session:“Proposal for the Tourism in Nagoya by Design -The Change of Public Awareness-” Chubu region of The Japan Industrial Designers’ Association

I work on a research by designer’s point of view so that Nagoya could be more attractive for Tokyo Olympic Paralympic Games in 2020. It is important for tourists to be treated warmly by local people. So I propose the establishment and management of “mini-concierge” system. This is the system which supports the citizens of Nagoya treating tourists freely and delightfully with having pride of core brands of “Kind city, Nagoya”. I introduced the result of the trial based on this concept. I conclude that we can realize this system without large investment and

manpower. I will keep on working to make systems easy-to-understand in tourism for all. ■The Awards ceremony and Presentations of Winners of IAUD Awards 2015

IAUD Award 2015 had 49 entries from all over the world. IAUD Award 2015 Selection Committee judged the entries rigorously and impartially. They

selected 3 Grand Awards, 6 Gold Awards, 8 Silver Awards and 29 IAUD Awards. Testimonials were given to winners by Takaaki Shimizu (Chairman of the Board of Directors, IAUD). Presentations by the Grand Awards and Gold Awards winners were given. The voice massage of Roger Coleman, the Chair of IAUD Award 2015 Selection Committee; “This year I and my fellow jurors have all been impressed by the rising standard of entries and the clear evidence of a widespread and growing understanding of Universal Design in practice.” was also introduced . ■Closing address:Tetsuo Iku (Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, IAUD)

I am sure that this pre-event gave us convictions and directions of the 6th International Conference for Universal Design in Nagoya 2016 which held in December. We IAUD will continue to improve toward international conference and we sum up tasks that given by everyone participated today.
