27th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 8, 2017 A reading from the Le er of Saint Paul to the Philippians Brothers and sisters: Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and pe on, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Please read the above passage several mes and think about how wonderful a message this is from Paul to the Philippians. Think about how wonderful a message this is to all of us. Paul says, “have no anxiety at all.” WOW! No anxiety. Many of us would give up a lot to have no anxiety, at least I would. Then we hear that it is in prayer and pe on with thanksgiving that we should make our requests known to God. We are to make requests to God. Did you all hear that? Make your requests to God. Ask God to make things the way you think they should be. Paul is telling us it is expected and ok and good to pe on God. Most of us do that, but we do not always do it with the right spirit or heart. Paul says, “with thanksgiving.” Do you remember that the word Eucharist means thanksgiving? So maybe, just maybe we should make our requests at mass with sincere, ac ve, fully a en ve prayer. Then Paul says the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and minds. From what will our hearts and minds be guarded? Probably the evil one and the world and the stuff which can so easily bind us up and prevent us from being the servants of God which was intended from the beginning of me. Oh, is that it? Maybe? Paul then con nues to direct us by saying to focus on all that is good and just and pure and honorable and lovely and excellent. Do I look at others and things of this world through that lens? Not too o en, I am sad to say. Well then, maybe it is me to start looking through that lens. I must ask the Lord for the grace and gi of insight and vision of others and the world, so I may be er be a servant and model of good Catholic Chris an life. This is no small request, but it should be prayed for anyway, and o en. I am reminded of a passage from the gospel of Ma hew in which it says to pray for one’s enemies and to think well of others, especially the ones that persecute you. If I could try occasionally to remember this and put it into prac ce, how much more at peace might I be? Paul says to the Philippians at the end of this passage to follow what you have seen and heard and learned from him. Are we willing and able to follow what we have seen and heard and learned from those who are charged with guiding us? I think too o en we allow our likes and desires and humanness to get in the way of the message of God which o en comes to us in the most unlikely way. Let us be kind and pa ent and wise as we follow our Lord and Savior on our journey home. Blessings to all, Ken Swinson, Director of Worship.
