requests, matching the funds available with the greatest needs. These funds are then distributed to Mission (Arch) Dioceses throughout the world. This General Fund of support is then distributed in its entirety each year.

As many of you know, we now have a Cub Scout Pack here at St. John the Evangelist. Pack 226 is incredibly active with

over 20 boys participating in many different activities. Last weekend, our pack attended the Cub Scout Extravaganza in Punta Gorda with over 2,000 scouts and their families. They camped out and participated in countless activities from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. On Sunday morning, Fr. Casey Jones from the diocese of Venice arrived to celebrate Mass for the Catholic campers in attendance. Attached is a picture of the Mass and one of the Webelos scouts

(Christopher Baier) who just so happens to be a parishioner at St. John the Evangelist. As you can see, in the absence of a missal, he is using an Ipad for the readings.

Last month, the Cub Scouts participated in a 10 Commandment Hike in Venice. It was a great experience for the young campers as they rotated through a description and tutorial of each of the commandments. Pictured

are some of the boys with their Ten Commandment badges earned through the hike. Believe it or not, there are literally hundreds of Catholic badges that Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are able to earn through different projects. If you

Did you know that Monday, November 4 will be the 5th Anniversary of Fr. John’s arrival as our pastor? On behalf of our entire parish family, I would like to say “Happy Anniversary.” Fr. John has brought a renewed sense of spirituality to our parish. Under his brilliant leadership, St.

John the Evangelist has flourished and will continue to grow and develop into the future. If you see Fr. John over the next week, be sure to wish him a very happy 5th anniversary.

Thank you so much to everyone that gave so very generously to the second collection last weekend for World Missions. The collection totaled $10,623.00. This is a 74% increase over last year’s collection of $6,079.00. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith from Catholics worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,000 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition, these mission dioceses submit requests to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples for assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of Religious Communities, for communication and transportation needs, and for the building of chapels and churches. These needs are matched with the funds gathered each year. The world’s national directors of the Propagation of the Faith vote on these

would like your child to participate in this very active Cub Scout pack, please contact Nicole Zumaeta at 595.3360.

In the very near future we will be starting a new Boy Scout troop which will be “fed” by the graduating members of our current Cub Scout Pack. Please see upcoming bulletins for further details on this new Troop.

Crews were out this past week completing the wiring for our surveillance system in the church and installing wire in the PLC for an upcoming installation. The new system is working wonderfully and we have already had an opportunity to review footage which was extremely helpful in ensuring that our church was secured.

Make sure to check out the advertisement on page 5 in this bulletin for Fr. Rourke’s Jubilee Mass and reception to be held on November 22. There is no cost to attend the reception, however, we must have an accurate head count for food and beverage purposes. There is a cutout at the bottom of this advertisement which must be filled out if you are planning

on attending the reception. Simply place it in the offertory basket or drop it off at the parish office. Please come out and support Fr. Rourke as he celebrates 50 years in the Priesthood.

In His work together,

he wisdom of Jesus was radical for the people of his time. While he communicated such a simple wisdom, he also disturbed the teaching classes of his day. In today’s gospel, Jesus uses a parable to demonstrate his disdain toward the Pharisees. The Pharisees were members of an ancient sect within Judaism who emphasized a strict interpretation and adherence to Mosaic Law. Dictionaries today add a secondary description to the meaning of “Pharisee” as “hypocrite” or “sanctimonious person”. Such descriptions relate to how Jesus encountered this group in his ministry. The gospels show how there was a disconnect between Jesus and the religious class. The parable points out how holiness does not come from self righteousness but an earnest desire to please God. Jesus opens the reality of God’s justification to the one who was despised, i.e. the tax collector who asks for mercy.

There is no doubt that Jesus would have seen the zeal within the group of Pharisees and their desire to help people follow the laws of the Torah. The only problem was these zealous people forgot why their laws were there in the first place – to bring others to God.

There is a hidden humility in the wisdom of Jesus. His message is so relevant to us as a community of faith. People are often tempted within the Christian community to view themselves as better than those who do not share in our life or morality. Our true mission is to include such people by encouraging them rather than judging them. Jesus always associated with the sinner, teaching them the mercy of a God who always rejoiced at a repentant sinner. He was criticized for that association – it must have taken a lot of his time and energy. Likewise we are asked to spend time with others, giving witness to the mercy of God through our witness.

Reflecting on the Sunday Readings with Fr. John J. Ludden, Pastor

PrayerLord, may we always recognize the sacred dignity that every person in our world possesses. May our bold proclamation of faith bring with it a gentle witness which encourages others to know and love you. Help us to live as you lived in humility and patience. Inspire us to treat the stranger, our neighbor, our family, and the sinner with the traits of your mercy. Amen.

Voices of Faith

A Prayer for True HumilityDeliver me O Jesus from the desire of being loved.

Deliver me O Jesus from the desire of being extolled.

Deliver me O Jesus from the desire of being honored, and being praised, and being

preferred.

Deliver me O Jesus from the desire of being consulted.

Deliver me O Jesus from the desire of being approved and popular.

Deliver me O Jesus from the fear of being humiliated, from the fear of being

despised, from the fear of suffering rebukes.

Deliver me O Jesus from the fear of being stereotyped, from the fear of being

forgotten, and the fear of being wronged.

Deliver me O Jesus from the fear of being ridiculed and suspected.

Amen.

— Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Humility calls us to recognize that every human person possesses the same dignity regardless of their station in life. The sinner is loved just as much as the one who leads a holy life. The difference is that God hates the sin but loves the sinner. God is glorified by the one who leads a holy life and rejoices in the face of a sinner turning away from sin. The only danger that remains for the Christian community is that it just focuses on itself alone. Sometimes people can become so inwardly looking, in terms of their religiosity and rigid observance or ritual, forgetting the reason why the Church exists, i.e. to give worship to God and bring others to His message. The mission of the Church is not self serving; rather it is to always reach out to those who need to experience the saving power of God.

REFLECTION God doesn’t create people as nobodies and somebodies. God creates all of us as somebodies. All of us are made in God’s image and likeness. Like the Pharisees in Sunday’s Gospel, we sometimes put others down in order to be somebodies ourselves. We make fun of other people in order to fit in ourselves or to make sure nobody puts us down. The Pharisee in the Gospel looks down on the tax colletor. Many people didn’t like tax collectors because they worked for the Romans and sometimes cheated people. The Pharisee thinks he is great because he isn’t like the tax collector. He isn’t dishonest and greedy. He doesn’t work with the Romans. He is faithful to all the religious laws. Jesus ends his story by telling us. “The tax collector went away right with God.” We don’t have to put others down to be somebodies to God. Everyone who wants to be popular with God is popular with God. Everybody is in.

Gospel for All Ages, Good Ground Press and Pflaum Publishing Group

We all like to be in the in crowd. It’s no fun to get picked last for dodge ball (especially after the kid with the cast) or find yourself the only person without a date for homecoming. We find ways to carve out a niche for ourselves, even in the face of rejection. (Case in point: My grade school lunch table wasn’t filled with outcasts; we were the kids who were too cool to care what other people thought. Yeah, that’s the ticket.) The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector reminds us that—no matter what group we’d like to be in—we’re all in one group together: sinners. This should not cause us to focus constantly on our failings, though. It helps to be mindful of where we’ve fallen short and strive always to do better, but the Good News is that God picks all his players from our team. The only people who don’t find a place at his table are those who think they deserve somewhere better to be or some better group to spend time with. All are invited to God’s banquet.
