    Recently,

    a

    Japanese

    T.V. networ k

    has shown

    a

series of candid movies on violence, rc

    d police

    w o r k

    in

    New

    York City. We

    were made

    sick

    watching it,

    but have had first-hand

    with

    violence

    in

    Japan.

    It

    is no wonder that

    our

young 23 year old believer has been

    djusted and committed

    to a

    mental

    institution. During his New

    Years home

    visit,

    upon one

his father offered, "Here's my bathrobe belt. Go ahead

    and

    commit suiside "

    It

    nly after much persuasion

    that

    he promised not

    to

    use

    the

meat cleaver and butcher knife ti

    layed

    aside.

    B u t

    h o u rs later the

    son was for tunate to

    get by with o nl y a

    h a m n i

    the back of t he head w it h o u t fighting back. B o t h father and son are

    in

    the hospital

    time.

    Pray for

    both and

    for the family.

    For

    some time the

    c i t y

of Isehara has been planning to widen the 7 ft. r o a d by our

    chu rc

o 18 ft. and pave it. We have sold

    about

    SOO square

    feet

    o f

    land

    to

    the

    city

    f o r

    that purpos

nce this takes away about half

    of our

    present

    parking

    area,

    we are taking

    steps

    to

    get

    mo

    etaini ng wall i s

    being

    built

    along

    the side

    of our

hou se to make a driveway fo

t o go to the play area at the

    rear

of the hou se. F unds received fro m the land sale

    wi

    8 0 5 ^ of

    the cost

    of the

    retainer wall. T he church

    wants to take

    ENGLISH TEACHER GOES

    BERSERKI

    At

    least,

    sometimes

    I

    think

    I

    will.

    But

there are rewards. The English diaries

    often provide

    my

    comic

    relief

    for

    the

    day.

    One student wrote, I

    sprained

    the

thumb finger of my right foot.

    The students also write

    things that

     lue me in on problems

    they

    may be

    having: The reason

    why I don't

    like

    my father, I don't know.

    But

    in my

    childhood

    I liked him.

We were involved in two English can5>s

this summer. One was an English-Bible

    camp sponsored

    by Dad and us. The

    other

    was

    an Obirin-^onsored English camp.

I was able to teach about Christ at both times. I also taught at

    our

    regular church

    camp; there were about

    80

students for that. The Obirin teachers asked

    me

    to

    speak

    at

    their

    retreat

    up

    in the

    mountains.

    So

    we had

    a

    total

    of 4 camp

    experiences.

    GRAM

    only

    dark

    spot

    in

    ou r

    was that we lost

    grandmother, Mrs.

    el Lusby.

    She

    died

    of

    heart attack; but she

    tly didn't

    suffer

    was alert and active

    he end. She was a

    Christian lady. We

    le

    to

    share her

    with

    the Chris

    here.

    BABIES, BABIES

    Many of our

    regular readers know Hideto

    Yoshii, a former

    worker

    at Sannobara

    Church.

    We

    were able

    to see

    them

    this summer.

    Little

    Hideki is one year

    old

now. He is expecting a baby broth

    or sister in October. Hideto's

    mother-in-law,

    Mrs. Nogami, is

    a

    new

    baby

    CONGRATULATIONS, Y'ALLI

    Hiromichi and Kyoko Kara

    were

presented with Kentucky Colonel awards which Lynn's parents

    obtained. The

    Haras

    operate a restaurant

    known

    as The Kentucky House

    that

    serves food any

    Kentuckian would

    be

    proud

    of.

Kyoko is a member of the

    Sannobara

    Church of Christ where

Dad works. Hiromichi has been attending regularly recently. They have two children.

    VACATIONING IS HARD WORK

    An

    old

    lady was heard

    to

    say: "When

    I

    works,

    I

    works

    hard—and

    when

    I

    sets,

    I

    sets loose."

    We had sure

    worked

    hard and

    were

    ready to

    set loose

    for

    a

    wonderful

    month

    with Lynn's

parents visiting here. Traveling is hard work even in the States, but harder here

    with

    few

    expressways and fewer hamburger

    stands We started on

    a

    trip via

    the

    overnight

    ferry—19 hours

    from

    Tokyo to

    Hyuga,

    Kyushu.

    The man at

    the

    travel bureau

    had

    told Mark

we only needed to pay for the

    4

    adults.

    (What

    he really meant was

that we were only getting a sleep

    ing

    space for 4.) We boarded

    the

    ship and

    located

    our quarters—a

    huge room where at

    least

    200 peo

    ple

    were

    "laid

    out." Each

    one's

    sleeping space

    was

    only 5' x 18 .

    Four big Americans

    with

    two chil

    dren, suitcases, diapers, and

    bottles,

    stood

    staring in dis

belief A kind steward saw our

problem and mercifully led us to

    a place where we'd be

    "more

    com

    fortable.

    It was

    a

    room for

    18,

    but we had it all

    to

    ourselves

    From

    Hyuga, four

    hours

    of

    driving

    brought

    us

    to

    the Mark Maxey home.

    After a wonderful

    time

    there, we

started the return trip by car.

Six days later we were home—tired

    but refreshed after much sight

    seeing and visiting

    with

    friends.

for using us, for His patience with us and for opening your

    to us in

    so

    many ways.

    "Oh

    that men would praise the

    Lord for

    goodness, and

    for

His wonderful works to the children of

    men "

    Seishiro Shimura

    was married on

    October 21st. Noone

    in

    his family

r hers seems to hav e ever been in_a church, let

    alone

    heard

    a gospel

    Their Shinto weddings are basically

    for

    the smaller family

is quite unin telligible. No wonder that they

one by on e expressing surprise

    at

    understanding this foreigner's

    appreciation

    for the

    simple

    message about

    love

    and

    God's

    the home. Isehara's Mayor Nakamura

    was

    among the 65 persons

    attended.

Mrs. Shimokawa at one time had made some kind

    of

    committment to

    in Kyushu.

    But,

under family influence and other pressures she

    slipped back. I attended

    her

    Buddhist funeral. One by

    one

    mourn-

    approached her

    front

    of

    the casket,

    lighted a

    stick

    prayed

    silently to

    and

    for her. Just

    before

    the service

    I

    approached

    the

    casket

    and

    prayed aloud addressing The Creator

    Buddhist

    Priest's

    sing-song type

    ritual

    was basically \

igible even to the Japanese. Other than my

    pr^er,

    the only

    words

    expressed

    in

    the

    40 minute service

    were

    by

    an as

    who instructed the

    mourners

to line up, burn incense and pray.

Harold ard Neomia Akers came into the Milburn

    The church is

    helping

    them to raise

    funds

    toward

    their

    proposed

visit to Japan in April of

They will assist with literature distribution, teaching English,

    and other duties in

    a

    few

    months'

    stay.

    Then,

    they ex

to be able to tell you about Japan when they return.

    Speaking

    of

    Milburn Blvd., received a thank

    you

    letter from Mrs.

    Buckman

    Blume,

    who now

    lives

    in Minneapolis.

    Having

    also

    been

    us

    at

    Milburn Blvd., she

    asked,

    "Is thirty years too

    long a

    time

for me to say 'thank you'?

    Needless

    to say we were

    overjoyed

    to

    her

    letter and told her

    so. Maybe

you will want to follow Marjorie

    express to some

    former

    teacher, or counsellor or friend

    your

    thanks.

    both be glad you did.

    "Why the Isehara street

    scene?"

    you ask.

    If

    you were

    on

    that app

    bus

    you would hear the announcement

    via

    tape recorded message,

stop is Sanno Junior High School. All who wish to go to Sannobara

    Christ

please get off here . This announcement

    is

    given 110

every day. The tall sign at the right marks a

    fire

    hydrant, and

    sign tells

    you that this

    is

    the entrance to Sannobara Church.
