Tuesday October 1st 2013: Temple Beth Israel’s Lucky Day

You Saw It Here First The heading on my December 2012 article was: Why Chanukah will start on Thanksgiving Day Next Year. The article stated:This year due to the Hebrew lunar calendar, Chanu-kah will start 17 days before Christmas. In 2013 (5774) Chanukah will start on Thanksgiving Day. By 2016 due to Adar 2 (which is the extra month our lunar calendar adds 7 out of every 19 years) 2 extra months will be added in 5774 and 5776, the 17th and 19th year of the 19 year cycle. Since 5776 is divisible by 19 exactly 304 times, a new 19 year cycle will begin in 5777. My March 2013 Article said: . . . because of the intricate rules of our Lunar Calendar, Erev Rosh Hashanah in 2013 will be on September 4th only 2 days after Labor Day and the 1st day of Chanukkah will fall on November 28th, which is Thanksgiving Day. Sukkot-Thanksgiving? Chanukkah-Thanksgiving?Passover-Thanksgiving! I am bringing this to your attention because of the dozens of emails I received from friends who know me as “the numbers guy who loves to explain our Lunar Calendar.” Their messages mentioned that the last time that the 1st day of Chanukah and Turkey Day coincided was in 1861. But President Abraham Lin-coln did not declare Thanksgiving as a holiday until 1863. Say a special Shehecheyanu Prayer as you light the candles and prepare to enjoy your Turkey Latkes!

On Tuesday October first at the meeting of The Board of Trustees, I told them that five days earlier, on Simchat Torah, after dancing with all four of our Torahs in the aisle of the Sanctuary, we put two Torahs (not just one, as usual) on the Bimah Lecturn and proceeded to read from the first Torah the last portion of Deuteronomy where Moses dies and then immediately began to read “bereshit” (in the beginning) from the second Torah. On the first day (Sunday) G_D said let there be light and there was light and G-D said it was good. On the second day (Monday) the firmament was created and the waters were divided above and below. The firmament was called heaven. On the third day (Tuesday) G-D created the land and the sea and he said it was good. And the earth grew grass and trees bearing fruit and G-D said that was also good. Since on Tuesday he said it was good twice after not commenting on Monday, Tuesday is considered to be a lucky day. Carole and I were married on Tuesday. My parents, Marion and Max Klionsky of Blessed Memory, were also married on a Tuesday. I told the Board that I am sure that our Founders who built the 5th building on Bay Isles Parkway and numbered it 567 (5+6+7) = 18 or chai also set our Board Meetings for Tuesday, the lucky day. We then proceeded to approve the first major repair to our building since the second addition was added in 2000 by a 19-0 vote. Our action was prompted by a 36 page report by Delta Engineering which described in detail and showed pictures of all the repairs needed and notes from our Insurance Car-rier Cincinnati Financial that made it very clear that if the corrections listed were not completed by qualified contrac-tors that our insurance would not be renewed on July 1st 2014. The total of the contract to bring our building back to good health was approximately $120,000. In 1984 our Founders built and passed on to us in pris-tine condition the Temple we love and pray in. They added a new wing 5 years later. We will always be grateful to them for their vision and generosity. Every member of our Temple in 2014 will take pride in the fact that they took part in the restoring of Temple Beth Israel’s building to good health so it can be fully enjoyed by not only our current members but by the members and leaders of the future.

We hope they will do as we have done by restoring what they were given by those that came before them. Many mem-bers have already been asked to help defray our expenses. As of this date $33,000 has been raised I’m sure you, when asked, will want to have the mitzah of playing your part in beautify-ing and restoring your Temple.

As President,

Sy Klionsky

similar experiences and aims. They both were religiously persecuted and sought to consecrate their liberation from tyranny. But Hanukkah intersecting with Thanksgiving may carry even more significance than we realize. Some historians contend that the early Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving observance was rooted in the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Often referring to themselves as “new Israel,” they surely knew that the holiday com-memorated Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian oppression. Furthermore Hanukkah may, in actuality, constitute a delayed cele-bration of Sukkot. The Second Book of Maccabees indicates that, in view of the desecration of the Jerusalem Temple at the hands of the Syrian-Greeks, “You must observe a Feast of Tabernacles in the Hebrew month of Kislev (two months later).” Sukkot in Kislev, rather than the month of Tishri? The explanation is that during the Maccabean struggle (167 BCE) Sukkot could not be cele-brated at the normal time and there-fore was postponed until the fighting

ceased. This Second Sukkot may have been suggested by a law in the Torah stipulating that if a person is prevented from celebrating Pesach, a Second Passover was to be kept a month later. Curiously, there are several other aspects of Hanukkah that resemble Sukkot. Hanukkah, like Sukkot, is eight days. Both celebrate light. On Sukkot, Jerusalem was lit up with torches in conjunction with the festival’s prominent water-drawing ceremony. There is also an empha-sis on “publicizing the miracle” of each holiday. Additionally, not only did King Solomon dedicate the First Temple on Sukkot but the Second Temple was also dedicated during the festival. Hanukkah, which actu-ally means “dedication” also com-memorates the rededication of the Temple. This seeming Sukkot/Thanks-giving/Hanukkah connection makes this year’s observance all the more fascinating. I look forward to sharing my Menurkey with you at services. Gobble Tov.

From the Rabbi’s Study

Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 3

As you are no doubt aware the first night of Hanukkah falls on Thanksgiving, a convergence that has only happened once before, in 1888, and won’t occur again, I’m told, for more than 75,000 years. The calendrical phenomenon has spawned a range of commemorative greeting cards, posters, t-shirts and menus. The “Thanksgivukkah” din-ner at Kutsher’s Tribeca in New York City will feature sweet potato latkes, challah-chestnut stuffing, pumpkin knishes, cranberry sufganiyot, and a cornucopia overflowing with choco-late gelt. Restaurant personnel will probably greet dinners with an en-thusiastic “Gobble Tov.” When this extraordinary holiday overlap first came to my attention a few months ago, I consulted a local artist about creating a unique Ha-nukkiah-turkey amalgam to honor the event. However, a short time later I learned about a nine year-old New Yorker named Asher Weintraub. Weintraub’s website, menurkey.com, features a likeable Hanukkiah-turkey combination he conceived. I realized there was no need to create my own but just purchase one of his. So I now own a Weintraub Menur-key. Though the price was a little steep, I’m pleased that Asher plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to charity and appreciate that get-ting a project like this off the ground includes quite a number of start-up costs. Asher thought a Hanukkiah-turkey would be popular since Ha-nukkah and Thanksgiving were as-sociated with giving thanks. So too, the Maccabees and Pilgrims shared

To all my dear TBI friends: Thank you so much for all the beautiful cards, chari-table donations, wishes, prayers, e-mails and phone calls I received during my illness. I've been sick for 2 1/2 months, All summer! I was in the hospital for a week again, a few weeks ago. I was very dehydrated and I had a dangerously low blood pressure. They had me on a saline drip for a week to rehydrate me. Since my return home I am finally feeling better, al-though still very tired. The nausea and pain I had for weeks are now gone. We even went out to dinner one nite and to the movies another nite. Looking forward to seeing everyone again soon.

Love, Nessa

Monday, November 11 is Veterans Day. Unlike other holi-days, most stores will not be stocking up on celebratory items and foods. Families will generally not be planning ahead to make it a memorable, special day. Even more than last year, our veter-ans hospitals and facilities will be filled with men and women wounded on the front lines of danger. Let us be thankful for those who protect our freedom. The veterans at Bay Pines VA Hospital in St. Petersburg are in great need of your assistance. Many are amputees while others suffer from severe wounds and debilitating conditions. You may be surprised to know that our government does not supply them with personal grooming supplies, socks, slippers, lap robes, un-

Veterans Day and Post #97

It’s difficult to believe that Thanksgiving is almost here, along with the surprise of the first day of Chanukah on the same day. Many of us leave much of our “giving” until the end of the year. I am one of those. This year I am going to include a nice gift to the Temple Beth Israel Endow-ment Fund. As I reflected on that gift, I wondered how much our congre-gants really know about our Endow-ment. So, with your indulgence, I will attempt to clarify as much as this space permits. What is an Endowment and how are its assets spent? An Endowment is a pool of assets that are invested on a long term basis, unlike expendable funds which are typically used for immediate needs. In our case, a portion is made available for an annual contribution to the Temple’s budgetary needs. The remaining assets and investment returns are retained in the Endowment to provide for growth over time. They remain available should an emergency need arise.

What are the investment prin-ciples and objectives? The goal of our investment policy is to ensure that gifts to Endowment are managed well, invested thought-fully, and used for the purposes and needs important to our Temple. For investment purposes, individual en-dowment funds are pooled into a single fund. This allows us to achieve greater diversity in our investments, lower our investment costs, and at-tain the maximum return on donor gifts. Our investment objectives are preservation of capital, protection of capital from inflation and enhance-ment of capital through market ap-preciation. How can an individual make a gift to the Endowment? Presently our examples of gift op-portunities fall into two basic categories: outright gifts, which are available for im-mediate investment, such as cash, stocks, bonds, and real estate, or bequests in which the Endowment receives the gift upon the death of the donor.

How do donors benefit from gifts to our Endowment? Aside from each donor’s per-sonal motivation and satisfaction, there can be substantial tax benefits. Let me remind you to take advantage of the IRA Charitable Rollover tax break due to expire on December 31, 2013. The benefit to you is that the contribution may satisfy your mini-mum distribution and is tax-free. It is excluded from your taxable in-come! Please check with your finan-cial advisor to learn the rules for this. How about joining me and add-ing a check to the TBI Endowment fund as you decide on your year end donations? Or, get a tax break and donate some of those appreciated stocks. In any case, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped to guarantee the life of our Temple, a gift in itself.

Please support his efforts by sending a check payable to the Disabled American Veterans Post#97 and mail this tax deductible contribution to Al at 5524 Chanteclaire, Sarasota, FL 34235. Building Fund Campaign Drive to be Led by TBI Treasurer Richard Levine and President Sy Klionsky On October 1, 2013, by a unanimous 19-0 vote, the Board of Trustees authorized repairs of approximately $120,000 to the exterior structure of our Temple Building. Since there also are many repairs needed to the interior, as well, we would like to let every member have the mitzvah of doing their part in bringing our entire Temple back to pristine condition. As of October 28th, 14 members aready have contrib-uted $60,000 to this fund.

Starting with our December Bulletin we will list the names of all those who have experienced the euphoria of contributing to the restoration and beautification of our Temple. Elise Galinsky, Leadership Circle Chairperson

Leadership Circle To Now Include Building Maintance Fund For several years, an on going discussion has taken place with the Board of Directors of Temple Beth Israel regarding the condition of the exterior of our temple building. Nu-merous repairs are needed and refreshing the paint is long overdue. As an addition to our regular campaign for Leadership Circle, this year, we are including gifts of $500 or more given to supplement the Building Maintance Fund. Those names will receive a plaque and be included in our Wall of Honor in the Temple social hall. As of this printing, ninety-four members have committed or contributed over $166,000 to the Leadership Circle with $60,000 of that amount designated directly to the Building Maintance Fund for repairs and repainting. Our board applauds you all! As last year, our Leadership Circle categories are: Bronze ($500), Silver ($1,000), Gold ($1,500), and Platinum ($5,000). The Platinum category currently has eight donors and five of those are new to Leadership Circle. Our High Holidays have now past and it is time to consider how we may help our Temple. Those who live in Sarasota and especially on Longboat Key, live in a paradise of beautiful weather, lovely homes, and a Temple facility that is ready and willing to meet our every need spiritually and socially. However, we must realize that all of this does not come without each of us contributing to maintain our Temple. In order to continue all of our wonderful programs, classes, lectures, and services, it is necessary for us to emulate our past years commitment of contrib-uting to the Leadership Circle. Please consider your commitment by November 30th and your final payment by December 31, 2013. The following members have generously contributed to Leadership Circle for 2014 including the Building Maintance Fund:

On Yom Kippur five years ago, Rabbi Katz an-nounced from the Bimah during his sermon, the cre-ation of the Yom Kippur Appeal for our Temple. His initiative encouraged the reenactment of an impor-tant traditional custom that has come down through the ages in temples and synagogues the world over to their house of worship in order to sustain its being. On Yom Kippur especially, the time of God’s judg-ment, such a contribution is viewed as possessing the power to “temper the Divine decree.” In the wake of the severe economic downturn of 2008, our Temple instituted the Leadership Circle as a means of insuring the congregation’s financial future. Individuals wishing to give $500 or more to the Yom Kippur Appeal were automatically included in the Leadership Circle, as there was a desire to maintain a distinction between the two giving paths. The Yom Kippur Appeal is for everyone. Small or large amounts are on equal footing as donations are appreciated as a reaffirmation of commitment to our Temple and the Jewish faith. This year, we have received donations from the following for the Yom Kippur Appeal: Nora & Albert Balk, Miriam and Allan Goldfarb, Betty & Joseph Hillman, Marjorie & William Klein, Alma & Dr. Hyman Kraman, Hilda Mandel Judith & Donald Markstein, Sanders Schreiber, Mac & Robert Spitzer, and Roberta Steiner. If you would like to make a contribution to this fund in any amount, please send a check to the of-fice with the notation “Yom Kippur Appeal” on your check. Thank you for your consideration.
