Practice Profile: The Klassnik CorporationA well resourced team:

The Klassnik Corporation is a London based interdisciplinary design practice, creating experiences through architecture, art and design.

Experience:

From our studio near Kings Cross, we have expertise in delivering professional architectural services across the full range of RIBA workstages from concept to completion. Including applications to statutory bodies, detail design, contract administration and co-ordination of consultant teams.

Founded in 2006 by architect Tomas Klassnik, we produce work across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Projects to date have included renovating modernist architect Peter Moro’s grade II* listed house, a ping pong parlour, a football supporters club, a scout hall frontage, landscape public art for the London 2012 Olympics, high street regeneration work, studio and gallery spaces alongside a number of domestic extension commissions to historic London housing.

This diversity of projects creating productive juxtapositions in processes, problems and materials that balance technical feasibility and fantastic possibility. In our North London studio, canisters of helium sit alongside brick samples, inspirations that cross fertilise to breed unexpected and frequently witty solutions to design problems at a range of scales allowing us to create architecture that balances distinctive innovative form and practical delivery.

A member of the GLA/TFL framework for arts consultancy we are currently working on a range of local authority public realm projects including new cycle infrastructure in Islington, and the transformation of the supporters club building for Cambridge FC into a more diverse social space.

The Klassnik Corporation has been selected to appear in the Architecture Foundations publication ‘New Architects 3’ and is a recipient of the RIBA Special Recognition Award for contribution to London 2012 Olympic Games

Public Realm & Public Participation: Throughout our public projects The Klassnik Corporation are involved in direct public participation and stakeholder consultation and have worked in a variety of programmes such as the Architecture Foundation urban pioneers to deliver access and education programmes related to projects.

Technology and Collaboration: Equipped with the latest technology our projects are developed in 2D and 3D CAD and in house visualisation can deliver stunning 3D renders. In addition we engage with specialists from various fields in dynamic response to specific project requirements. In this instance this might include graphic design or communication specialists alongside the traditional array of project sub-consultants.

Additions to Historic ArchitectureThe Klassnik Corporation has experience in delivering multiple renovations and extensions to historic brick building stock and working to resolve the integration of new services and details into listed buildings, including a Grade II* listed building in Blackheath.

Public Art Installation and Strategies. As a member of the GLA/TFL framework for arts consultancy we are currently working on developing a range of new bespoke cycle racks for Islington council to be installed on Caledonian road in 2016 and have delivered numerous installations including those at the London Olympics in 2012 and art strategies for developer and council clients.

Cambridge United Supporters Club Building. Working with local contractors and club supporters to transform the existing frontage of the Supporters Club, to enhance the experience of the site as part of wider development plans. Making it attractive to a diverse audience beyond match day supporters and encouraging alternative activities at the site as part of a longer term transformation of the stadium site. Retro fitting a distinctive graphic timber rainscreen with cut out illuminated detail to create a dynamic icon for the area.

Blackheath Park. Refurbishment of a Grade II * listed Modernist house in Blackheath, originally built in 1957 by the architect Peter Moro. Remodelling the internal utility spaces on the lower ground floor level to improve the connections within this configuration of rooms in the house and utilise spaces which were under used. New rooms include bathroom, sauna area and home office space. Integrating contemporary technologies such underfloor heating, within the constraints of the existing structure. Materials were chosen to complement the existing house palette including tongue and groove timber ceiling with recessed lighting, bespoke mahogany and mirror cabinets, hand finished Shou Sugi Ban charred timber walls and CNC pattern cut mahogany detailing.

Roof Extension

OPTION 1

• Wall to flank and main house extended up to form loft

• Meadow planting to roof of extension

• Roof and loft elevation clad in unifying metal system

• Fixed roof and wall window joined to visually open room

OPTION 2

• Wall to flank and main house extended up to form loft

• Meadow planting to roof of extension

• Roof and loft elevation clad in unifying metal system

• Openable flap/roof and wall lights potentially conceal the scale of openable facade

OPTION 3

• Wall to flank and main house extended up to form loft

• Meadow planting to roof of extension

• Roof, loft and new rear elevation clad in unifying metal system

• Internal roof courtyard (or potential roof light)

• Circular window

OPTION 4

• Wall to flank and main house extended up to form loft

• Meadow planting to roof of extension

• Roof & loft and elevation clad in unifying metal system

• Bathroom access to small area for planter

Rather than 2 boxes for the loft as allowed under permitted development, the loft spaces are unifed into the volume of the house through extending the walls up. Whether bricks could be matched to achieve this or the walls of house rendered or reclad tnc.

The existing rear elevations brickwork is distressed in some places and may warrant replacing given the large proportion of demolition to both existing floors at the rear and either replaced with new matching (or contrasting colour brick) or alternative cladding.

Marsala Rd : Terraced House Extension : 2014-15 Scout Hall : Wood Street High St Regeneration Project : 2012-13

Marsala Rd Renovation and extension of a Victorian terraced house in South London. London stock brick is used to create a sense of continuity between the existing house and additions, as if the extensions have been carved from an original whole. New glazed openings matching the pitch of the existing roof slopes are cut into the rear elevation to create an internal terrace at first floor set behind a planted sedum green roof. At second floor level black standing seam zinc cladding encloses a new loft and bathroom. The project reinforcing and enhancing the existing geometries of this standard London house typology.
