Practical related task - Ecology Fieldwork: Development and Conservation at Long Valley, Kwu Tung North Conservation and Development- Long Valley, Kwu Tung North Practical Related Task - Ecology Field Work Instructional Approach Name: Group: Date: Background: Planning Department has commenced the stage 3 public engagement on the North East New Territories New Development Areas, Kwu Tong North is one of the three areas. Its theme “Mixed Development Node”- making good use of the transportation network to create a new development area with a mix of commercial, residential and R&D uses, as well as land for ecological conservation. However, would this be the best option? Students may have more in-depth view about this development and hopefully the sustainable development in Hong Kong can be implemented. Long Valley is one of the priority sites under the New Conservation Policy with high ecological value of freshwater wetland. Now, the site is under the management of Hong Kong Bird Watching Society and Conservancy Association sponsored by ECF. The proposed plan for Long Valley would be Nature Park and Agriculture Land, but would this really help in long-term conservation? What would the impacts arise from the nearby development and buildings? Aims: After the course, students should be able to: 1. Acknowledge the major development and its related process, 2. Briefly describe the updated proposed plan of Kwu Tung North, 3. Understand the Long Valley Management Agreement and its ecological value, 4. Compare the Ho Sheung Heung heritage sites, 5. Express their views about the sustainable development and the balance between conservation and development, 6. Do observation and record the appropriate data, 7. Analyze and organize data for presentation, 8. Cooperate with others and work together in a scientific investigation. 9. Appreciate nature and respect living things. Schedule: 9:00 - 10:00 Briefing 10:40 - 12:20 Field work 13:00 - 14:00 Lunch 14:00 - 14:30 Data analysis 14:30 - 15:15 Prepare presentation 15:15 - 16:30 Presentation & summary Equipment and tools: 1 Clipboard (x1) 2 Colour pencils (x1) 3 Binoculars (x1) 4 Macro-scope (x1) 5 Compass (x1) Clothing: 1. Long-sleeved shirt and trousers for better protection against mosquito and insect bites, as well as preventing sunburn. Shorts are not recommended. 2. A pair of shoes for preventing injuries. Slippers and sandals are not recommended. Safety: 1. Never walk outside the footpath, trample upon the farmland and enter the fishpond. A1
