PR4 Me & My Movies

Genre: Action

I have chosen this genre due to it being my favourite genre. I like this genre because of the constant ‘action’ going on within the films. From high-speed car chases to gun shots, this is a typical male genre due to the nature however this doesn’t rule out girls liking it. I like the idea of suspense and not knowing what's going to happen next.

Dredd 2012

Anthony Dod Mantle is a British Cinematographer whom was the cinematographer for Dredd 2012, a profitable, successive film. Other films he has worked with are films such as 172 hours, Rush, Slumdog Millionaire, Trance and 28 days later. The production of Dredd 2012 took place in South Africa because it is practible and cost effective for shooting the starting base of Mega City One. The location shows parts of Johannesburg and Cape Town. The writer Alex Garland had regular contact with the Dredd creator John Wagner. They used VFX for the blood and gore when people were being shot, he said ‘so for reference we fired bullets at blood bags and prosthetic skin and noticed the stringy nature of the blood and the shock wave impact of the bullet on skin. We shot as much of it as possible in layers so we could control the action and in VFX we added particulates in the air to add depth to the stereo. The slow-mo look was developed over a period of time and consisted of separating out the colour and objects in the scene and taking them in different directions with hue and saturation. Add to that some sparkles in the highlights and some heightened stereo and we had our drug look’ The film used a lot of VFX, the total VFX count used was close to 300 and had a total shot count of 650 shots (that’s a lot for people that aren’t clued up!)

Need for SpeedThe Need for Speed film is a typical action film. The film stars Aaron Paul whom is also in the popular TV series Breaking Bad. The director of Need for Speed is Scott Waugh who has directed films such as the 2002 Spiderman. The story is about a cross-country high speed race against time-one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt to save his struggling garage, blue collar mechanic Tobey Marshall who with his team skilfully builds and races muscle cars. The story is a plot on revenge when Aaron Pauls best friend dies due to the antagonist in the film (Dino Brewster) who clips the back of his bumper and makes little pete have a fatal crash. However the antagonist doesn’t go back to look at Pete to make sure he is okay, leaving him to die. Revenge, Friendship and love are heavy themes of this film, very similar to most other action based films.

Star TheoryStar Theory is when a popular ‘star’ (famous actor worldwide) is in a film, making you tempted to go and watch it regardless of the genre etc. There are a lot of stars which I myself enjoy watching because they’re in some of my favourite films. I enjoy watching Aaron Paul due to the breaking Bad series, so before I even went to watch Need for Speed they already had me halfway to enjoying the film due to Aaron starring in it himself.

Media Literacy

The main source for finding out about films etc is the internet. The internet is spectacular in what it can achieve. The saying ‘Google knows everything’ is probably just about right. I use Youtube to watch film trailers and use IMDB to find detailed reviews about them. Another good thing about Youtube is the recommended videos at the side of the video you are watching, this helps me to find similar films to those that I enjoy. Social networking sites are also a great way to find out about films; Twitter has promoted links in which things can appear on everyones timeline (costly to produce of course). Adverts on TV also help in me finding out about a new film coming up, its notable TV adverts will only show new film trailers, this is where the internet (youtube) come into play for the older films. There is access to anything and everything this day and age.

Active SpectatorshipActive spectatorship suggests that some people will react to a film differently to others such as the way they embrace the meaning or the message in the film. This also leads to cult following of a film; this is a fan base that is very interested in the film and its meaning be it due to a certain scene, plot or quotes from the movie. The cult followers may pay attention to much smaller details than the average viewer due to their passion for the movie or movies; films that are in sagas such as star wars and lord of the ring often gain the largest cult following along with auteur movies such as fight club.

Reception TheoryStuart Hall came up with the Reception theory. This basically means that we react to films based on our gender, ethnicity, age, social class and cultural background. Producer encoding is what the director chooses to include in their movies. Audience decoding is how one interprets the meaning of a film. Our opinions are either Preferred, negotiated or oppositional. Preferred is when we like the film, negotiation is where we see the good points and bas to a film and oppositional is where one doesn’t like the film at all.

Intertextuality

Dredd has intertextuality with other films and games such as ROBOCOP, with the whole ‘I am the law’. Both films show intertextuality with each other for example they both have the same clothing. The intertextuality in a film makes you want to watch the film more, for example if the previous film is good and has a good rating from IMDB, a new film that is similar then encourages you to watch it.
