    Abraham Lincoln was born near Hodgenville,Kentucky, on February 12, 1809. He was themiddle child but shortly he became theyoungest, for his brother, just one year younger

    died. He was born in a log cabin and grew upon the American frontier, educated himself byreading borrowed books, and worked splittingfence rails and clerking in a general store, and

    then as a country lawyer, long before hebecame president.

    In response to concerns expressed by friends aboutthe actions of some of his Cabinet members,Lincoln stated that the "path to success andambition is broad enough for two" said KearnsGoodwin. When there was success, Lincoln sharedthe credit with all of those involved.

    Go Out into the Field and Manage Directly

    During the Civil War, many soldiers died and

    there were many ups and downs. Lincolnestablished lasting connections with the troopsby visiting the battlefield and hospitals, whichalso helped bolster morale.

    Lincoln also spent time talking with membersof the public, taking 'public opinion baths'according to Kearns Goodwin. He held public

    receptions and made a point of shakingeveryone's hand and speaking to eachindividual.

    Lincoln understood the importance ofrelaxation and humor to shake of the stress ofthe day and to replenish himself for thechallenges of the next day. According to Kearns

    Goodwin, Lincoln had a wonderful sense ofhumor and loved to tell funny stories. Heencouraged a healthy atmosphere of laughterand fun in his administration. He also enjoyed
