Ozone

Ozone or trioxygen, is an

inorganic molecule with the chemical

formula o3.

It is a pale blue gas with a

distinctively pungent smell

It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less

stable than the diatomic allotrope O2

breaking down in the lower atmosphere

to O2

(dioxygen)

It is slightly soluble in water

The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by

two French physicists Charles Fabry and

Henri Buisson.

Ozone in the atmosphere In lower atmosphere (troposphere) ,ozone is present as green

house gas with some GWP and life span and so contribute

greatly in the global warming.

Tropospheric ozone is directly emitted by car engine and

industrial activity .

But, in upper atmosphere (stratosphere) it act as protective layer

by absorbing the harmful UV rays, coming from the sun directly.

In stratosphere ozone is present btw 20 to 30 km from the

surface.

How ozone is measured

The ozone measurement instruments and

technique are varied. Some of them are the Dobson

spectrophotometer and the filter ozonometer called

M83, and total ozone mapping spectrometer

(TOMS) in the Nimbus-7 satellite.

ओजोन मापक यंत्र और तकनीक लवलवध हैं। उनमें से कुछ Dobson

Ozone depletion

Ozone layer depletion is the gradual

thinning of the earth’s ozone layer in the

upper atmosphere caused due the release

of chemical compounds containing gaseous

bromine or chlorine from industries or other

human activities.

ओजोन परत का क्षरण ऊपरी वायुमंडल में पृथ्वी की

ओजोन परत का क्रलमक पतलापन है, जो उद्योगों या अन्य

मानवीय गलतलवलधयों से गैसीय ब्रोमीन या क्लोरीन युक्त

How exactly it deplete

The causes for ozone depletion are free radicals

like chlorine and bromine which are called

Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS).

ODSs are found in stable organic compounds

like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs),

hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Volatile

organic compounds (VOCs), carbon

tetrachloride, and methyl chloroform which are

released from refrigeration, fire suppression,

foam insulation, and vehicular exhaust.

Natural processes like volcanic eruptions also

contribute indirectly to ozone depletion by the

release of aerosols

The ozone depletion reaction is a catalytic, Cl which

deplete the ozone, recovered back in the end of the

cycle.

before returning to its resiorvoir.
