The First Film

The first film was created in the late 1880’s with the creation of the film movie camera

The first real film, Roundhay Garden scene, produced by Louis Le Prince on October 14, 1888 in Leeds England is the oldest surviving motion picture, and is thought to be the first recorded film

This film was black and white, and was only a few seconds long, however it was big step in the entertainment industry

One of the first cameras that was produced for filming is the pinhole camera, it is thought that this camera was used in the first film

Colour Filming

Colour filming was not seen until the beginning of 1932. The first recorded surviving colour film was a cartoon produced by Walt Disney, called ‘Flowers and Trees’ (July 1932)

The first live action films were ‘The Cat And The Fiddle’ and ‘The House Of Rothschild’, which were produced in 1934 by 20th Century Pictures/United Artists

Hollywood ‘Golden Film Age (1930’s 1940’s)’

The biggest major film studios in this period were 20th century fox, Warner brothers, Paramount, Colombia and Universal studios

Walt Disney was also important in Hollywood at this time but Disney was still an independent Production company and not a major entity

All of these film production company’s went on from this era to create many successful films, and make millions of dollars in the film industry

Each of these production company’s ‘the big six’ are still running today

First Film with sound

This first film with sound was made and produced in 1923 but this was only through sound incorporting, effectively talking pictures

However the first real film with sound that wasn’t added in over existing previous shots was released in October 1927, this film was called ‘The Jazz Singer’

This was an American music film which was produced by Warner Brothers

its Vita phone sound-on-disc system, the movie stars Al Jolson, who performs six songs. The film is based on The Day of Atonement, a play by Samson Raphaelson.

First ever cinema

The first theatre in the world exclusively devoted to showing motion pictures was the Nickelodeon, which was opened on June 19th, 1905 in Pittsburgh Penn

The theatre was invented by Harry Davis and John P. Harris who moved 96 seats into an empty store at 433-435 Smithfield Street, transforming it into the world's first movie theatre
