Powering Seattle through the 21st Century
Denny Substation Program
WHAT’S NEXT? In the third quarter of 2018, crews will continue to restore neighborhood streets and sidewalks as duct bank installation nears completion. Other upcoming visible work in and around the substation includes completing alley concrete paving on the east side of the substation, wrapping up work on the elevated walkway and installing project art. We will also continue to advance the Cascade Neighborhood Street Improvements.

QUARTERLY REPORT 2 N D Q UA R T E R | 2 0 1 8
THE FINISH LINE IS IN SIGHT!With two quarters of 2018 already behind us, it’s hard to contain our excitement. Every day brings us closer to project completion! Recent noteworthy milestones include: starting the energization process in the substation, restoring and re-opening John Street, and installing new sidewalks and curb ramps throughout the Cascade Neighborhood. Community benefits that took take shape this quarter include the off-leash areas, handrails, and the waterproof membrane for the elevated walkway.
If you’ve followed along since the beginning of the project, the most anticipated times are yet to come. Let’s hear it for the sprint to the finish line!
Keepin’ it green: In May, we
installed solar panels atop the
substation. These will provide
electricity to the community spaces
and interior buildings and will help
us live up to our reputation as the
nation’s greenest utility.
INSIDE THE SUBSTATION:
STEPPIN’ UP OUR GAME…Stairs have been installed at the southwest corner of the substation to provide pedestrian access through the site. The stairs lead to Denny Way, where a new signalized crosswalk will improve connections between the Denny Triangle and Cascade neighborhoods.
The wooden forms constructed by crews in the first picture are stripped away after the concrete is poured. The second picture shows the freshly formed stairs, which will soon be ready for the public to walk on.

ENERGIZATION PROGRESS REPORTRemember these? In late April, crews began the energization process by bringing high-voltage electricity into the substation’s three transformers and testing them under electrical load. This is a crucial step in “turning on” the substation and making sure it can safely deliver power to customers.
The substation’s three transformers have undergone extensive testing and will soon be transforming high voltage electricity into voltages that can be used by customers.
RESTORE GALORERepaving is a good sign —it means the underground work is wrapping up and the end of construction is near. Who doesn’t love the ride of a smooth freshly paved road?
An asphalt paving crew restores the roadway on Pontius Ave N near John Street after a network distribution line was installed near the substation.
After duct bank installation, the concrete crew restored the roadway in the intersection of 9th Ave N and Thomas Street.
AROUND THE SUBSTATION:
A LUSH CASCADE NEIGHBORBOODCommunity improvements continued in the Cascade Neighborhood. In addition to the new street lighting, sidewalks, and curb ramps, landscaping and trees were recently installed. Improvements still to come include more landscaping during the fall planting season. Crews prepare to plant a tree
in the planting strip next to the Cascade Playground.
Landscaping and a rain garden in the Cascade Neighborhood are among the improvements being made to make the neighborhood greener and a more inviting place to walk.
