Results Summary

Out of the 11 schools that completed the survey, all schools were ‘Very Positive’ or ‘Somewhat Positive’ about the courses. No schools were neutral or negative about them. Schools liked the idea of combining adventurous activities with theoretical learning as it would clearly show how the knowledge learnt in the classroom can be applied. They also commented that it would help make the theory stick and that it would be a fresh approach to Science and Technology outside the classroom.

Some schools did state that they would need reassurance about the scientific content and that the topics are not touched on too lightly. Schools would also like to tailor the activities to their specific needs and some asked for more Biology, Chemistry and Maths content.

Ability to pay was perceived to be an issue for schools and assisted funding was requested by some schools. 54% of schools stated that the likelihood of this being a major issue for them was ‘Extremely Likely’ or ‘Very Likely’, 36% stated that this was ‘Moderately Likely’ and 10% ‘Slightly Likely’. Even though ability to pay was perceived to be an issue, ‘Quality of Experience’ was perceived to be the most important factor when picking STEM related adventure activities. This was followed by ‘Value for Money’, then ‘Cost, then ‘Distance to Travel’.

If these courses were available today, 27% of schools stated that they would be ‘Extremely Likely’ or ‘Very Likely’ to attend them, with 64% stating that they would be ‘Moderately Likely’ to attend them and 9% saying that they were ‘Slightly Likely’.

Q14: In your own words, what are the things that you like most about these new courses?

1. Interesting slant on STEM education.

2. A fresh approach to science and Technology outside the classroom.

3. I like the real life application of the principles of Science that students can often miss the point of in the classroom.

4. Activity combined with theoretical learning, showing how knowledge can be applied.

5. Engaging and Outdoors.

6. The pre and post activities.

7. Provides an alternate way of explaining things. Visually good. Students involved in the learning. The memories of doing these activities will stick with them.

8. Variety, fun, extra-curricular learning for all.

9. Independent learning and problem solving opportunity.

10. Linking of practical application and theory.

11. I have not looked at the courses as yet.

Q15: In your own words, what are the things that you would most like to change about these new courses?

1. I would want to be reassured about the scientific content and that they are not just touching on the subjects lightly.

2. Not sure at present.

3. For my school's own situation some form of assisted funding as this would be the key issue. I do not think you are over priced but I think some students would struggle. Maybe have a session aimed at KS5.

4. Not sure.

5. More maths only activities, bearings etc.

6. possibly a little too pricey when transport is added.

7. Very physics based due to the nature of the equipment. Would be good to have a few more biology and chemistry activities.

8. Cheaper.

9. Nothing bar the chance to tailor the activities to our specific needs.

10. Inclusion to use theory to plan or adapt an exercise would show full understanding of learning.

11. I have not looked at the courses as yet.
