Identifying the Lombard Powerbook

If the writing under your display only has the words “Macintosh Powerbook G3” asshown, then you have a Lombard.

The design of the rear ports is as in the picture below. Note the two USB ports.The Lombard has only USB ports, and no firewire ports.

Keyboard & Modem Removal

Pull the two keyboard tabsback and flip the keyboardback. (Flip back thekeyboard while pressing inthe two tabs. The pictureonly shows the left hand tabbeing pulled back.)

Remove the three Philipshead screws from the heatsync as shown. Then, usingthe metal “handle”, pull theheat shield up and out. Itshould come out easily.

Remove the two Philipsscrews from the modem asshown. Then, using smallflathead screwdriver, gentlypry the modem up from it’sconnector and detach themodem cable from themodem.

To remove the keyboardconnector, insert yourforefinger under the plasticgrasp, and gently pull up. (Ifit does not come out easily,gently wiggle it from side toside while pulling up.)

Processor Removal

To remove the processor, put theflathead screwdriver on the righthand side of the processor asshown. Then gently pry up untilthe processor pops out. *Do notuse too much pressure. If theprocessor does not easily comeout, simply try another location inthe bottom right hand corner. Itshould be relatively easy to popout.

Remove the processor as shown,and place on a static free surface.

Ram Replacement

Note – To change the ram in theupper slot you do not need toremove the processor. You onlyneed to for the bottom slot.

Using either a flat headscrewdriver or your fingernail, pryback the metal fasteners holding inthe ram as shown. Do this on eachside. It’s easier if you do them atthe same time. To install new ram,align the grooves, slide in, andpush down.

Hard Drive Removal & Replacement

*Note – Some of the pictures show aPismo motherboard. The hard drivereplacement is the same in both models.

Using your thumb and forefinger,grab the orange cable as shown inthe picture, and gently wiggle backand forth until the cable is loose.You should now be able to pull thehard drive out using the plastic tab.

*Note: If the hard drive does notcome out easily, then the harddrive sled may be holding it in onthe back near the power button. Ifthis is the case, use a flatheadscrewdriver as shown to pull thecage towards you while liftingfrom the plastic tab. The hard driveand cage should now come out.

Remove the four black Torxscrews (2 on each side) with yourTorx T8 Screwdriver. (Availablefrom www.powerbookmedic.com)

Then remove the hard drive cableand hard drive from the hard drivesled. You must now remove theorange cable going to the harddrive. To do this, grab the cable asshown, and gently pull straight up.Note: If you use too much force ordo not pull straight up, then youwill bend some of the pins and willhave to straighten them with aflathead screwdriver later.

Screen Removal and Replacement

Tilt the display back, and pull thepower button clutch coverupwards. (This can sometimes takea lot of force. The more tilted thedisplay, the easier it is to take off.)

Using your Torx T8 screwdriver,remove the four flathead torxscrews on the back of the unit asshown. (Replacement Note: Thesefour screws have flat heads, not therounded heads like the other torxscrews, do not get them confused.)

Using your thumb and forefinger, grabthe inverter board as shown, andgently push it towards the display andup. It will snap right out with ease. Dothis on the left hand and right handsides of the inverter. There are twosnaps. Grab the cable from the inverteras shown, and in a gentle wigglingmotion, remove the cable from itsconnector.

Then, grabbing the orange cable asshown, remove it from its connector.Repeat for the multi colored invertercable.

Now, pull the display back up so it isperfectly vertical. Place your hands onthe right hand and left hand side of themonitor, and lift the display out of thecasing.

Bottom Casing Removal

Trackpad Removal

Remove the 5 torx screws as shown.(There are 3 long silver screws, and2 short black ones.

Using your forefinger, slide theblack plastic sheet from under thetrackpad as shown.

This reveals the orange trackpadcable. Using your thumb andforefinger, gently wiggle the orangeconnector cable from its connector.

Pull this cable back to expose onesilver screw. Using your torx T8screwdriver, remove this screwalong with the visible one to theright of it. (Both are long silverscrews.) Also, remove the black torxscrew as shown in the picture.

Remove the last two torx screws asshown.

Remove the seven torx screws asshown. (Replacement note, the twolonger torx screws go on the far leftand right hand side of the area underthe trackpad as shown)

Remove the two cables from theSound AC board as shown. (Notethese are harder to remove thanprevious cables. Using needle nosepliers, and grabbing on to theconnector and then pulling towardsyou may help. If you do this,remember to be gentle.)

The casing will now easily come off.Work your way around the entire unitpulling up on the casing as shown.Start at the back right-hand corner, andwork your way around to the back left-hand corner. Be gentle. If it doesn’tcome up easily, then double check tomake sure you didn’t miss a screw.

Charger Board Replacement

Remove the two long sliver screwsfrom the charger board as shown.

Then, grab the charger board asshown, and gently wiggle it out of itsconnector. The board should comeout with ease. Place the board on astatic free surface.

AC / Sound Board Replacement

Remove the black torx screw asshown.

Pull the rib frame out and fold back asshown.

Then remove the cable coming fromthe modem port.

Now gently pull the sound board upand out as shown. If the sound boardgives you problems coming out, thenmake sure that the metal fasteners arenot clipped to anything. You can use aflathead screwdriver to gently prythem back.)

Logic Board Replacement

Disconnect the Pram battery and fanfrom their connectors. Remove thesmall torx screw located next to thefan as shown.

Slide the trackpad release free fromthe motherboard as shown.(Replacment Note: the spring comesloose simply attach it back to the blackconnector. Make sure the screenrelease button works before putting theunit back together.)

Next, remove the nut as shown in thepicture. You can either use a smallallen bit or needle nose pliers as thescrew is not on very tight. If you electto use needle nose pliers, make surenot to let the pliers slip!

Now grab the board as shown, pull upand out. Make sure to rest is on ananti-static surface.

To reassemble, work backwards from these instructions, paying special attention to ourspecial reassembly notes.
