Being a huge LA Laker basketball fan and speaking with some respected friends on the regular basis about hoops I figured this might be a little fun so indulge me if you will.

Inserted I have selected a starting five and a six man of my choice of course who I feel embody the lead players if you will here locally in politics. In addition I have included my brief

description of each player as well. And as mentioned just having a little fun so loosen up and feel very comfortable to create your own starting five and sixth man as well.

Remember 2013 is right around the corner and you want to make sure the right persons handling the rock so do your research, no ball hogs please.

The starting five:

The Point Guard

The orchestrator nothing happens or moves without the point guards instruction literally the coach on the floor. If you want to ball keep your point guard happy.

Usually the player on the team without a conscience literally there for his offensive prowess. Normally the last to buy into the team concept if it doesn’t benefit him and everyone knows who wants to shoot the last shot too.

The strength and the muscle of the team who embodies an assertive presence and is at times fearless. May have a tendency to be a little to feisty at times a good point good point guard controls that.

The pivotal player every successful franchise normally has a center who willingly will play offense defensive and do what is necessary to win. Remember the reference was successful franchise is this a successful franchise (Jersey City?)

The Shooting Guard

The Power Forward

The Center

The Shooting Forward The scorer the defender the rebounder usually multi skilled can do just about everything. But consciously does what he does in order to keep cohesion on a team with professional egos that can be sensitive.

The Six Man The six man very capable and able of starting on any team but willing to sacrifice for the mission or goal. Takes a certain character to serve in this role very few could assume the duty requires very tough skin.

Kobe Bryant affectionately known as “The Black Mamba” does have the ability to take over a game. But when you look at the career of Kobe Bryant the one constant besides of course coach Phil Jackson who has ushered these championship seasons have been Derek Fisher the point guard. Very rarely will we see a point guard lead a team in scoring average as well his team to an NBA Championship and for those naming Allen Iverson remember the Lakers beat them that year they didn’t win.

Ideologically speaking having the greatest talent or physically gifted or even greatest thinkers

2

doesn’t necessarily mean an automatic championship. Cohesiveness is not only an important element it is necessary for success. And most importantly especially when it comes down to the leader of the team character speaks volumes. Derek Fisher’s character took a bit of a hit this year dully because of the NBA Players Lock Out he is the President of the NBA Players Union and many were a little pissed with him and as well he’s a lot slower so LA opt to release him which they did.

The Role Player - is sometimes more revered in cities for years especially if he or she does consciously put his or her city first. Guess that doesn’t apply for every player but a great individual player will forever be recognized just as that all for self. The Cheerleader – Is basically a distraction from the game. I must admit there are some who love the timeout and half time entertainment but truthfully at the end of the game was it all really necessary at all it’s overblown truthfully.

For fact some will belly ache and be a little pissed off but truthfully there is nothing at all in these descriptions meant to be taken offensively they’re rather courteous quite

honestly.

Sadly for me as I mentioned it really just affirms what many of us even sports lovers never want to face with our respected teams and that is the reality of accepting the end of a good run when it’s over. The end of a dynasty maybe but with the exit of coach Phil Jackson it surely couldn’t be a shock for any Laker fan that we’re truly not considered a front-runner in the Western conference anymore.

The beauty of sports just like politics is when an organization can accept evaluate and assess deficiencies and consciously as well cooperatively on all levels work to make the proper adjustments they at least stay competitive even in down times which the Lakers have this year.

Winners are programmed to do so and expect nothing but being victorious and a player like Kobe Bryant honestly is under the impression that the LA Lakers will win the NBA Championship this year.

There’s No I In Team: Truthfully That’s What We Were Taught Right?

2

This is something that can’t be taught it is part of his mental psyche just as it was with Michael Jordan.

Political I see similar characteristics in especially the power forward I selected remember winners aren’t necessarily well liked during there runs or after their careers are over. How many people have you ever heard refer to MJ as a great guy every or even teammates now who embrace Kobe publicly?

The center or the big man in the pivot is more than just a special component on the team in most cases you can’t win without him. And with the big man currently jumping center at the beginning of the game especially as years progress teams at times re-evaluate whether or not the city is expendable or not can he still get the job done? Or has his time passed?

I always was a big fan of the shooting forwards Dr. J Julius Erving was one but in his prime he never won a championship in the NBA until he sacrificed and became a role player. Role players seem to be in life after the NBA the ones evolving as more successful coaches and executives. And even basketball family bred coaches like the Van Gundy brothers or already the mention Phil Jackson-Pat Riley-Mike Brown-Scott-Brooks-Lionel Hollins-Doug Collins to name a few recent coaches enjoying success these days.

One of the greatest teams ever with the most diversified group of players possibly ever to play for one team was the NBA Champion New York Knickerbockers. The great Willis Reed came from Grambling University and was the captain and played center. Bill Bradley was a Princeton University Rhode Scholar and played shooting forward. Dave Debusschere was the power forward and screams of defense probably started and became a trademark at Madison Square Garden because of Debusschere who was also drafted in all three professional sports. The first shooting guard in 1969 was Dick Barnett another dominating scorer in college and of course my favorite player of all time Mr. Rock Steady himself Walt “Clyde” Frazier my idol in my youth from Southern Illinois University a Salukis.

The coach was the immortal William “Red” Holtzman and for those of you who are unaware the great Phil Jackson was a member of this championship team. And a few years later even the great offensive player Earl “The Pearl” Monroe even bought into coach Holtzman’s “No I In Team” concept and of course the Knicks again were champions. And even looking at the old LA Laker teams with all time great Jerry West at guard and then high flyer shooting forward Elgin Baylor probably one of the most lethal combos ever but they couldn’t win a championship. Until the next year Elgin Baylor retired and they brought in the former high scoring dominant big man of years past Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain who consciously bought into coach Bill Sharmin system and concentrated on nothing but defense and rebounding he made a sacrifice and eventually became a winner. The role players are sometimes more revered and loved in their cities especially if they consciously put the team first it take an individual with strong character and also not deterred by an oversized ego.

Egotistical behavior unfortunately is very much so what seems to be more relevantly connected to everything. Which exposes the masses to any one particular individual person who may be thriving for attention. Even when examining some of the newly created internet groups supposedly created in the best interest of the city and constituents but more self serving then anything glorifying one doing anything possible to neighbors launch grenades at each while they sit back and laugh at the show.

Role players off the bench

The Role Player The role player is sometimes more revered in cities for years especially if he or she does consciously put his or her city first. Guess that doesn’t apply for every player but a great individual player will forever be recognized just as that all for self.

With the direction of local politics it’s unfortunately way to obvious that our teams playing with a player coach but who is it? Who’s in charge is the point guard or shooting guard or the power forward or shooting forward as the center watches it all? Pretty scary but think about it for one second who’s really in charge?

The Coach

The Cheerleaders Basically a distraction taken away from the game itself. I must admit there are some who love the time outs and half time entertainment but truthfully at the end of the game was it all really necessary at all it’s overblown truthfully.

The Water Boy Every franchise has them and values their service it’s a demeaning job for some only few would do it and do it proudly. Water boys learn valuable lessons from a first hand perspective and during the most sensitive times. But sometimes they get in the damn way too so move and sit down under the basket until the play stops then clean up.

The Fan At the end of the day the fan should be the priority. The fan in some instances who are loyally supported a team for years even through disappointing losing seasons players jumping ship, over priced tickets and egotistical players “The Fan” represents what hopefully a team develops into. And we all continue to dream or are living in a fantasy as we watch on and hope for a change.

Role Players Off The Bench: The Role Player-The Cheerleader-The Water Boy

The Water Boy - Every franchise has them and does value their service it’s a demeaning job for some only few would do it and do it proudly. Water boys learn valuable lessons from a first hand perspective and during the most sensitive times. But sometimes they get in the damn way too so move and sit down under the basket until the play stops then clean up. Literally the jobs titles and responsibilities in especially NBA basketball of recent had me along with a friend just metaphorically just observing not how similar the duties are but how much some of todays most recognizable political figures locally seem to be performing their in the same capacity in which I have written. For fact some will belly ache and be a little pissed off but truthfully there is nothing at all in these descriptions meant to be taken offensively they’re rather courteous quite honestly. The truthful descriptions would definitely be maybe a little more candid and grudges would be held for years to come. Being consistent with the normally child like behavior of most associated with politics as if it is a sand box in a pre-school courtyard. And now quite frankly we’ve pretty much inherited a totally new generation of players in the game ironic right the words players and game are just so appropriately used here. Role-Playing (also role-play) noun 1 chiefly Psychology the acting out or performance of a particular role, either consciously (as a technique in psychotherapy or training) or unconsciously, in accordance with the perceived expectations of society with regard to a person's behavior in a particular context. 2 participation in a role-playing game. Imagine what kind of place this would be if everyone would consciously and effectively play their own roles. I know for a fact successful organizations like the team referenced in this article the LA Lakers and especially the Chicago Bulls ( both Phil Jackson coached teams ) were effective because of the role players very honestly. The stars of those teams like Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls or Kobe Bryant and for the first three rings Shaquille O’Neal even as dominant as they were during there reign they depended on the role players off the bench. Remember John Paxson or Steve Kerr knocking down baskets at the buzzer or “Big Shot Rob” Horry with the Lakers holding his hand up in the air after knocking down the last shot? NBA Historians are well aware of this and it’s a good trivia question when you with a group of friends who love basketball as well. QUESTION: (answer located on page 6) In the NBA for 10 consecutive years the eventual NBA World Championship winners had either one of these two players as a part of there team who are the two players?

Answer to question page 5: Robert Horry & Steve Kerr

Bottom line is I doubt whether everyone will quite understand why I analogize and don’t just come straight out and say certain things especially since it’s plain as day even in the analogous way it is written. In all honesty I believe the message has even more impact because if anyone especially one with the character traits mentioned in this article doesn’t see it and others know immediately it tells you exactly what type of person your dealing with and that is a dangerous thing to play with, namely this magazines name which is POWER.

2

Hopefully we all like in basketball have our eyes on one prize being a city of champions.

Together we can successfully achieve anything separately we stay in the erratic as we’ve been. Manipulative tactics executed daily on group blogs supposedly for the betterment and collective direction a team should be focused on maybe discouraging at times. But remember the truth does eventually come to the light but not a rat they stay in the dark. Written by THE WHEEL
