Why PBIS?

S  PBIS is a CONSISTENT positive behavior system that focuses on the positive actions of students rather than the negative!

S  For the past two years, VES used a PBIS behavior system and saw excellent results in student behavior with a direct correlation to student achievement.

S  This year, we took all suggestions and input and listened to what worked best and what was wanted most! J

Why Focus on Attendance?

S  Students are more likely to succeed in academics if they attend school consistently.

S  Students not in class have fewer opportunities to learn material.

S  Absences have an impact on the teacher’s ability to move forward with the class.

S  Make-up work does not take the place of teacher instruction, discussions, and hands-on opportunities.

S  Research suggests a direct correlation between dropout rates and poor attendance beginning in kindergarten.

Birthdays

Individual birthday celebrations are not permitted on campus. Each month our PTA hosts a Birthday Club and students are given cake during this time in the cafeteria. This procedure does not conflict with academic time and it ensures that our students with severe food allergies have alternatives.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Homework

Reading Expectations

S The school-wide expectation for all grade levels will be to read 30 minutes Monday-Thursday and one weekend evening (choose from Friday-Sunday) for all grade levels. For K-2 students, we know that we are working on building reading stamina, so split their time between Read to Self and Read to Me. Grades 3-5 students will be expected to read for 30 minutes each evening.  Reading Logs are a school wide expectation.

Math Expectations

S Math homework will be sent home to allow students to practice the skills they are learning in class. If students struggled in class, a previously taught skill will be sent home for the student to practice. Math homework for K-2 students should take approximately 5-10 minutes. Grades 3-5 should be spending 15-20 minutes on math homework. If the homework is taking longer than the suggested time, it goes beyond practicing a skill and needs to be retaught. In the event this occurs, have your child stop at the recommended time limit and write the teacher a note indicating he/she is still learning the skill. The following day, your child’s teacher will pull a small group and reteach the skill.

If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, at school or on a field trip at all this year, you must be approved by the county for the 2014-2015 school year. We suggest that everyone fill out the application and be approved so that you don't have to worry about it later. It takes about 3 weeks to get approved, so it is almost impossible to apply at the last minute before a field trip if you want to chaperone. Please note that you must re-apply each year. It can be done online; contact us for the link.

If you are already an approved volunteer, please let us know, or if you apply, please let us know when

your approval comes through.
