THE HISTORY OF MOOC
• MOOC first emerged from the open educational resources (OER) movement, in response to
the course called Connectivism and Connective knowledge (CCK08) Dave Cormier of the
University of Prince Edward Island coined the term MOOC in 2008 (http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_open_online_course). CCK08 was led by George Siemens of
Athabasca University and Stephen Downes of the National Research Council, it consisted of
25 registered tuition paying students with 2200 registered non paying students, all courses
were available online(RSS feed) where online students could participate in various
collaborative activities(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_open_online_course).
Thereafter, other MOOC courses emerged with partnership of other Universities.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
A MOOC has a curriculum and course content which consist of reading
assignments and short video recording of lectures which are usually 8-12
minutes. Students are required to participate in online discussions using their
studying material to complete quizzes and activities which have been
assigned to them. MOOC is conducted by organizations, mostly non-
profitable, and decide what is going to be taught and at what level. They
basically form faculty teams and support staff to design and conduct the
course (http://www.educause.edu/library/massive-open-online-course-mooc).
