Main Engine: Yanmar 4JH3TE

The Engine Room

Mike Egan NSW Marine Sales Manager for PowerEquipment worked with Peter and Sari Ullrich fromBoatspeed to supply a Yanmar 4JH3TE enginepackage, 3 blade Gori overdrive propeller and aYanmar 1GM10 bobtail engine which is used as a

DC generator for this vessel. The project team atGori propellers again, as in the many other custombuild project’s currently underway worked closelywith both the designer and Power Equipment staffthroughout the design stages to guarantee anoptimum propeller match for this remarkable vessel.Sune Ehrenskjold from the Gori factory in Denmarkoffers to our client’s many years of propulsiondesign experience which is much appreciated andrespected by the many Australian yacht builderscurrently enjoying the benefits that only the Gorirange of folding propellers can offer.

This craft is somewhat unique, not only can Ellenstand inside the main engine room, the whole mainengine, shaft, prop and skeg assembly isengineered to be quickly removed (to save weight)when this vessel is set up in racing (recordbreaking) trim. Servicing is also made easy withmuch room available in the engine room.

Engine & Propeller Information

In the world of custom built sailing vessels wherehigh quality, lightweight and dependable marinediesel power is absolutely essential no other brandcomes close to Yanmar. With a proven heritage, simple uncomplicated design, low weight andworld class performance and support Yanmar wasagain the natural choice by the Boat speed teamfor Castorama B&Q.

The Yanmar 4JH3-TE and 1GM10 both feature‘quiet design’ technology that delivers noticeablysmoother and quieter performance right acrossthe power band. Miserly fuel consumption andlow exhaust emissions is part and parcel of boththe legendary GM and JH range of engines.

Castorama’s 3-blade Gori propeller is also a winner.Since it’s introduction onto the market in 1994 thispropeller has marked a technological and

Ellen MacArthur’s new 75-foot solotrimaran is the latest project for the 27 year-old sailor who shot to fame in 2001 afterfinishing second in the ‘Everest’ of soloraces - the non-stop round the worldVendée Globe race.

MacArthur finished second in the race, setting a new record as the fastest andyoungest woman to race around the globe. Her return from this race launchedMacArthur onto the world’s sporting stageas her trials and triumphs on this racecaptured the hearts and minds of peoplearound the world.

This new trimaran has been built with oneobjective, to attempt to set new solo speedsailing records. The $2.3 million, high-tech3-hulled trimaran was constructed at Boatspeed’s world class boat building facilityat Somersby, just North of Sydney. Oneother recent project also completed by thisyard was the racing maxi “BOLS” asfeatured in our power news issue 21.BOLS has since gone onto establishingitself in the history books with manyinternational regatta successes.

The build of this trimaran involved a 40-strong build team who worked over 30,000man hours since May 2003. “Building arace boat like this takes a high-tech boatbuilding facility and a build team withspecialist skills,” said the team’s AustralianTechnical Director, Neil Graham. “The guyshere have done a superb job in a short time

period and I hope they feel proud of whatthey have achieved.” This is the first timea racing trimaran like this has beenconstructed in Australia - normally thismarket is dominated by the boat buildingyards in France. She was designed byFrance based, British Naval Architect NigelIrens in conjunction with the OffshoreChallenges technical team.

It was impossible to move the new trimaranin one piece so the 3 hulls and crossbeams were transported by truck at the endof November 2003 to the Sydney PortAuthority and P&O base at Glebe forassembly. The giant trimaran weighing inat only 8.3 tonnes was lifted into the waterjust before Christmas where she underwentfinal preparations before being launched onJanuary 8th, 2004.

The official launch took place in DarlingHarbour outside the National MaritimeMuseum and coincided with the openingday of the Sydney Festival. The trimaranwas officially named ‘Castorama B&Q’ afterher principle title sponsors, European DIYretail giants Castorama in France and B&Qin the UK.

performance leap forward in the development offolding propellers for sailboats. The blades of theGori 3-blade propeller are designed with bothcamber and twist to them, which gives excellent

thrust in forward. In reverse the unique bladeaction allows for precisely the same camber andtwist as in forward, giving increased power andmaneuverability over most other types ofpropellers.

The ‘overdrive function’ adds a new dimension tosailing under power. The helmsman can choosethe propeller pitch and profile in the water whilesailing forward, by regulating the yacht’s shift andthrottle control, without the use of vulnerablehydraulics or complicated mechanical devices.

The Gori 3 folding propeller until year 2003 wasonly available for shaft drive installations butfollowing the release of the sail drive compatiblevariant it has already made a large impact on theAustralian sail drive scene. Sail drive owners bothhere in Australia and worldwide have been quickto appreciate the benefits offered by the 3 blade

A separate Yanmar 1GM engine, acting as generator, is stored in another room.

Flinders Island and the other FurneauxIslands lie across latitude 40, betweenthe Australian mainland and Tasmaniain the east of Bass Strait.

The Furneaux Islands began asmountains on a land bridge that joinedTasmania to mainland Australia. Withflooding at the end of the last ice age, these giants became a group of 52mountains in the Sea.

Flinders Island – with an area of 1376square kilometres – is the largest ofthis group.

Today, the mild maritime climate andthe breathtaking geography of theislands have given this region thereputation of being the “Mediterraneanof the Pacific”.

Flinders Is. James and Lindsay Luddington are theFlinders Island tour specialists. Theyoperate Flinders Island Adventures andshow tourists the beautiful wild andremote places that visitors rarely see. They can explore the history, wild lifeand scenery on land or by sea, guidedby experienced locals who love theislands.

James and Lindsay are based in theFurneaux Group of islands and workthrough the islands from south ofWilson’s Promontory to the East coastof Tasmania. Activities range fromgame fishing, general fishing and wildlifebased tours in the summer months. They also include on their itinerary theservicing of isolated Lights and Telstrainstallations, wildlife research, searchand rescue.

Their 348 Powercat, Strait Lady, wasbuilt in Queensland and launched in late1987. She has a length of 9.98 metres, with a working weight of around 7 tonswhich includes 1000 litres of fuel, 150litres of water and passengers onboardher top speed is 30 knots (light load)with a normal working speed of 18knots.

On board Strait Lady has a pair of250hp Yanmar 6LP-DTZP’s DieselEngines. James reports “The relativeisolation in which we work and the seaswe cover, mean that absolute reliabilityis essential. The performance so far ofthe 6LPA’s has been excellent and thefuel economy impressive. In a recenttwo day Game Fishing charter with 6persons onboard, we used a total of 408litres in 18.7 hours of operation. Duringthis time we spent 6.2 hours cruising at18 knots travelling to and from theContinental Shelf and the remaining12.5 hours was spent trolling at approx.8 to 9 knots. These figures aquait to anaverage fuel consumption of 21.82 L/hrfor both engines. This is absolutelyBRILLIANT fuel consumption, a 25%saving for the same amount of hoursand type of work when compared to theold electronically controlled 250hp 4.2 Ltengines that I used to have installed inthe vessel. On top of this I know thatthey are a simple mechanicallycontrolled fuel injection engine and don’trequire any expensive diagnostic toolsto diagnose faults as was the case withmy old engines. A major advantageseeing as though we are extremelyremote to the mainland”.

Single 240HP Yanmar 4LHA-STZPFor Aussie Boatowners Repowering!

Bordering on being an icon on theAustralian boating scene, theCaribbean 23' flybridge (see right)was produced from 1985 throughuntil 1999 by the highly regardedMelbourne based boat builder,International Marine. During the 14years that they produced the 23'Caribbean, some 400 units rolled offtheir production line, all fitted outwith V8 petrol sterndrives. Thisparticular vessel was ideally suitedas a family cruiser, but soon becamerecognized as the perfect platformfor game fishing. The 23' Caribbeanwas also produced in a runaboutversion, which also leant itself toboth sides of the market.

When Chris Galea, proud owner ofone of these brilliant sea boatsoriginally made contact with PowerEquipment in early January 2004regarding the Yanmar 240hp DieselSterndrive Package 4LHA-STZP (seeright), little did he realise how greatthe potential fuel savings could be byre-powering his 23' FlybridgeCaribbean from a 230hp 5 Litre petrolV8 sterndrive, to the Yanmar 3.45Litre 4 cylinder 240hp dieselsterndrive. After lengthy discussionswith both Power Equipment and

“When the fuel bowser clicked off at 57 litres after the firstdays fishing, my initial thoughts were that I must have beenfilling the tank too quickly and caused an airlock in the fillerpipe. When I tried to put more fuel into the tank and it clickedoff almost straight away at 59 litres, I could not believe what Iwas seeing. In the past we used around 160 to 180 litres ofpetrol for the same sort of days fishing. Our average fuelconsumption is now around the 7 Litres per hour mark. Notonly is the fuel consumption brilliant but the overallperformance of the boat is far beyond what I could have everexpected from the re-power. The boat now planes faster andat a lower speed, it is more controllable at low and highspeeds, especially when chasing those very acrobatic StripedMarlin in reverse, it accelerates twice as fast, it’s quieter whenyou’re up and on the go and best of all it raises the fish, themarlin love it. In just 30 days on the water we have raised over10 Marlin, something that we were not able to achieve with theold petrol engine. We have had Marlin come right up to theback of the boat to have a look, as I said, this has neverhappened before.”

Fully loaded at around 3000 kgs with five adults onboard,Chris’s reborn 23' Caribbean now cruises comfortably atbetween 22 & 24 knots and runs out to a top speed of just on28 knots. The secret to the improved performance comes fromthe 4LHA-STZP’s massive torque and the carefully selectedgear ratio of the proven Mercruiser Bravo II sterndrive. For further details contact Simon Carter at Sealink Marine on 03 9773 3444.

Page • 5

Melbourne based authorized Yanmar re-power center, SealinkMarine, Chris pressed the button and gave the go-ahead forSealink Marine to fit a new Yanmar 240hp sterndrive.

The 240hp model is a 3.45 litre purpose built marine engineand forms part of the 4LHA series, which also covers a powerrange including a 160hp and 200hp models. The 4LHA isoffered in both standard stern drive and shaft driveconfigurations and is renowned and much respected in themarine industry as being the benchmark for this horsepowerrange.

This engine has a maximum rated torque of some 610Nm at2500rpm. The high torque offered by the Yanmar 3.455 litreengine, combined with the large diameter 20” prop of the Bravo2 drive, provide plenty of thrust (forward and reverse), which ismuch appreciated especially when in tight spaces such asmarina’s or when trying to move vessels away from the bank. The maximum RPM of the engine is 3300rpm, which results inlower piston speeds, therefore less wear compared to some ofthe higher rpm market competitors.

Now that the boat has been in service for some months andwith 120 hours on the clock, Chris has been able to get agood feel for the performance and most importantly, fuelconsumption. When Power Equipments, Steve Parsons,spoke to Chris after his first trip to Eden on the New SouthWales South Coast, Chris had this to say;

Pumps Australia Pty Ltd have been usingYanmar Diesel Engines extensively formore than 6 years now with greatsuccess.

John Warne, Managing Director OfPumps Australia says “We have foundthe combination of our huge range ofHigh Flow - High Head Self PrimingPumps and High-Pressure WaterCleaners and Yanmar diesel engines anexcellent partnership because ofYanmar’s reliability and performance, also…it’s the right packaged price.”

Recently Pumps Australia were invited todesign a Truck filling system to reducethe time of Water Cart tank filling from 20minutes to 5 minutes. This was achievedby using the combination of two Yanmar16hp TF160E watercooled engines beltdriving two Pumps Australia 4 inchCadoppi Self Priming Trash HandlingPumps operating at 5000 litres perminute. These units were mounted on acommon robust frame with a commondelivery outlet which allowed one or bothunits to run depending on the fill raterequired. The costing of the two pumpsets verses one 6-inch Diesel drivenpump system was less than half pricesaving the customer considerable costimproved flexibility and performance.

MINE DEWATERING

Pumps Australia selected the Yanmardiesel engine for a Gold miningapplication for portable mine dewateringusing Pumps Australia 2 inch SelfPriming Trash Pumps closed coupled toYanmar 4.8hp L48AE-DP aircooledengines.

By opting for a portable system, the goldmine saved substantial costs of fixedinfrastructure.

Pumps Australia Pty Ltd has extensivelyused Yanmar Diesel power for all ourdiesel powered pumping systemsapplications. Units have been exported toThailand, Singapore, Batum, Timor, andAustralia wide through distribution.

“Pumps Australia are seeing copyDiesel products entering into theAustralian Market place.

Pumps Australia has taken the time tocarry out extensive testing andinspection of these units, and considerthe alternative copy Diesel engines tobe defective at manufacture. Thesecopy engines do require constantattention and parts replacing to keepthem operating. Considering allfactors, the differential of costsbetween Original genuine Yanmardiesel engine and copy diesel engineswill soon be eaten up with the time andeffort of the service departmentkeeping the Diesel copy enginesoperating. We know this because weoperate an active service departmentand see more and more customers withproblems and very little service spareparts backup from the copy suppliers.

We therefore will only consider qualitygenuine Yanmar Diesels for our productrange.”

in this horsepower range but allow foreasy checks of crankshaft and bearingsand save much time, cost and stress atthe time of an engine rebuild due to easyaccess of key components.

The 6CX-ETE delivers its power in thepurest way possible. High injectionpressure helps clean burns, 4 valvecylinder heads and a Boost Compensatorreduce the usual surge-speed smoke. Ata dry weight of only 820kg’s (notransmission) and a maximum height of935mm the low profile nature of the6CXM-ETE and the larger rated 6CXM-GTE (465hp) and 6CXM-GTE2 (500hpvariants) provide a very viable alternativefor the many owners who come to Yanmarfor a “new lease of life” for their existingvessels in the 38 to 48 foot range.

New vessels constructed by SteberInternational (Stebercraft) have gracedthe pages of Power News many times inrecent years. Stebercraft is a familyowned and operated company that islocated in Taree, New South Wales wherethere is an extensive modern factorycomplex. Stebercraft was one of thepioneers in the construction of fibreglassvessels in Australia having commencedmanufacture over 57 years ago.

The company is a renowned manufacturerof high quality robust commercial andrecreational motor vessels ranging in sizefrom 28’ to 52’.

This vessel operated by Headhuntercharters is yet another fine example oftheir build quality and design whichensures a long service life and thecapability to put to sea when othervessels need to return to port. In recenttimes our dealers have assisted manyexisting Steber owners from PNG andAustralia to repower their vessels all withgreat feedback from the owners.

Headhunter’s skipper, Steve Tedesco, likewise is testament to this fit with muchpraise being given in respect to the lowernoise levels and improved performance(22-23 knots cruise, 28.5 knots max) withreduced fuel costs, all factors that nodoubt are key and compliment whatalready is a very successful charteroperation.

All the team here at Power Equipmentwish Emmanuel and his crew all the verybest for the 2004 fishing season andthank them for choosing Yanmar in therepower of their vessel. For more information onHeadhunter Charters go towww.australianfishingcharters.com

HHeadhunter Charters operates out ofBermagui, about a 3½ hour drive south-east of Canberra, the National Capital. With virtually an “all weather, all season”harbour, Bermagui offers consistent andsafe access to the ocean, in a widevariety of conditions and most importantlyit offers some of the most exciting deepsea blue water sports fishing in Australia.

Their vessel, Headhunter, is a 41ftFlybridge Stebercraft Cruiser and is fullyequipped with every conceivable fishfinding and navigational device and canboast to having over 2000 satisfiedcustomers per year.

Power Equipment’s Area Sales Engineer,Steve Parsons, was recently contacted bythe vessel owners for recommendations torepower Headhunter in preparation for theforthcoming high season. After manyyears of faithful service from the originalVee 8 diesel engines fitted, the time hadcome to upgrade and take advantage ofthe current technology available. Aftermuch investigation into his availableoptions, Emmanuel Markis (owner ofHeadhunter Charters) selected therenowned Yanmar 6CXM-ETE (see right)purpose built marine engines. At aconservative rating of 420hp from the7.127 litre 6 cylinder design this modelhas proved to be a durable andeconomical selection in many similarvessels with owners appreciating thesimple easy maintenance and installationfeatures offered by the high qualitypackaging from Yanmar and simplemechanical fuel injection controls.

The repower on Headhunter wascompleted by Power Equipment’s localdealer in Bermagui, Craig HurstEngineering. Craig has completed similarrepowers for other Yanmar clients in thisarea on previous occasions and hisreputation for high quality and timelyservice was again demonstrated. Thecompact nature of this engine modelcompared to the larger twin turbo Vee 8configuration units that were removed, hasallowed for much improved servicing for allthe engine service points and otherequipment found in the engine room. Oneof the many benefits that this upgrade hasprovided for the owner, skipper andmaintenance personnel.

Another feature which is standard on theMarine 6CX series and one muchappreciated by our service dealers andboat owners is the cylinder inspectionports in the block. These are features nottypically found on our competitors engines Page • 7

Want A Back UpGenerator You CanDepend On?

When faced with an installationestimate of over two hundredthousand dollars to connect tothe mains power supply, Regisand Kerrie Bezencon ofHealesville, Victoria, decided toinvestigate the economics ofinstalling a solar system with adiesel generator backup instead.Given that Regis and Kerrieoperate an alternative energybusiness along with a financialplanning business, theeconomics not only covered theinstallation costs but the ongoingoperational costs as well. All thiswithout compromising theiraccess to electrical appliancesand luxuries.

The system also senses when demand exceedsthe battery capacity of 2.5 kW and directs power directly to the house to top upthe solar supply.

Scan Hi, having been in the generator business for over 30 years, have been along time user of Yanmar engines, having built over 300 sets using Yanmar LSeries, TF Series and TNE multi cylinder engines. Their reputation is only as goodas the product they sell and the components they use, Yanmar has earned theirrespect as being one of only a few brands of engine they will use.

Regis was happy to accept the Yanmar set as he had been involved in the sale ofseveral Yanmar L Series Powered smaller sets for his clients. These sets had allproven to be reliable and economical, some having now done considerable hours.Speaking of considerable hours, this set has now passed the 2000 hour mark andit’s owners couldn’t be happier, the fuel efficiency, minimal maintenance and lownoise levels have all combined to make even the nearby neighbors happy.

Our thanks go to Regis (pictured below) and Kerrie for allowing us into their homeand sharing one of the most magnificent views in Australia. That is, a Yanmarengine working away at what it does best! The view from the veranda wasn’t badeither!

Westray Stud, owned by Leanne Termain and Ray Cannon, is a4000 hectare farming operation located 4km north of Peak Hillin Central Western New South Wales.

For the last seven years they’ve had a contract to supply theneighboring Peak Hill Gold Mine with it’s water requirementsfrom their unused water allocation, drawn from the BarrabadeanCreek which flows through the property.

With the mining operation winding down over the last couple ofyears and the water still there, they were faced with thequestion: “What do we do with all this water now?”

Although Westray already has Stud Sheep, Farm StayAccommodation and Grain production, both Ray and Leannewere looking for a new adventure. Given this almost unlimitedsupply of water and over 14 hectares of natural ponds on theproperty, Westray Blue Yabbies was born and saw themmoving into Aquaculture. A great idea but it would require plentyof work and planning before the product would become viable.

To take full advantage of this opportunity Leanne and Raycontacted Ian Morris of Outwest Pumps & Irrigation in Dubbo,Ian has designed and installed an irrigation system comprisinga Yanmar 40hp, 4TNE88 engine / Irrigation Pack, coupled to aDavey ISO 80x50x315 Pump. The Yanmar chosen for it’sproven reliability and fuel economy and the Davey for it’s qualityand reputation.

Whilst many irrigation suppliers in the past have preferred tobuy a loose engine, manufacture their own base, then mountthe pump and engine control equipment themselves, Raydecided to use a genuine fully mounted Power EquipmentIrrigation Pack. Yanmar Irrigation Packs comprise an enginealready mounted on a heavy-duty skid base, complete withengine protection shutdown kits or auto start/stop systems, fitted stub shaft and even battery cables, leaving very little forthe irrigation expert to do except fit the selected pump andcoupling.

Fuel consumption for the Yanmar 4TNE88 is around 3.9 Lph,for an engine producing 32hp @ 2200rpm that’s miserly andthe set just sits there vibration free working away. With the fuelsupplied from a 4000 litre tank this will give plenty of runninghours between refuels.

The first of Yanmar marine’s new generation compact diesels, the 29hp (21.3kw) 3YM30 had itsworld premier at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2004.

Within weeks of it’s world wide release key boatbuilders and dealers across Australia confirmedthe design targets for more power, less emissions and smooth operation were more than just abold statement on a press release.

The 3YM30 at 29hp has already positioned itself as an ideal replacement upgrade option for thenow discontinued but legendary 3GM30(27hp) model, with current orders exceeding initial salesforecasts, requiring additional enignes to be airfreighted.

Hot on the heels of the introduction of the new 3YM30, Power Equipment released to the localmarket at the Sydney International Boat Show in July 2004 the new 3YM20 21hp(15.3kw). This 3cylinder model replaces the existing 2 cylinder 18hp 2GM20 series and at 17% more power, larger displacement and quiet vibration free running it is no wonder the market place has eagerlyawaited its release.

Both new models feature a completely re-designed cylinder block and combustion systemallowing for increased power, quieter, higher torque and cleaner operation. With indirect injectionand a swirl pre-combustion chamber, these all new units comply with the demanding EPA Tier 2and BSO/SAV Stage 2 emission regulations.

Standard specifications for both models include a new compact VDO control panel, inline typefuel injection pump, integral stop solenoid and a 60amp alternator. To meet heavier electricalloads an 80amp alternator will be offered in the near future.Maintenance has been simplified with the water pump, fuel filter, oil change and dipstick locatedon the same side of the engine at the front.

In the next issue of Power News we will be profiling a couple of recent vessels commissionedusing these new YM models together with previewing the new 39 and 54hp JH4 series productwhich is due to be released onto the local market in the near future.

PRODUCTS

Power Equipment is proud to release the new range ofSPG4, CPG4 and YTB4 direct coupled, 1500rpm, 4 polegenerators.

These machines are a product of evolution from theenormous sales success we have enjoyed over the last fewyears with the belt coupled, 3000rpm, 2 pole SPG, CPG andYTB generators. The enormous hours, arduous conditionsand less than ideal installations of some of these sets haveinspired us to design a new machine that is now thebrick@#$%house.

From the heavy duty 150mm x 75mm steel channel base tothe protective colorbond roof to keep overspray and rain out ofthe alternator, every aspect of these units has been designedto ensure that the generator lives up to the hard earnedreputation of the power plant, the TF Series engine.

These generators are virtually vibration free, the big heavybase keeps everything where it should be, with these newmodels batteries and leads are all supplied and the nowlegendary Power Equipment engine protection and controlkits can all be neatly fitted within the generator envelope.

These new 4 pole models are smoother, quieter and morefuel efficient than their predecessors, running at only 1500 or1800RPM. We have also drawn on the experience andlessons learned from being in this market sector for morethan 4 years and “tweaked” the engine / alternatorcombinations to prevent any problems associated with lightloading. With regular maintenance these new generators arecapable of running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Of course lower revving machines will also last longer withless stress, less friction and less vibration on all componentsof the engine and generator. Coupled with the ACP100CTengine controller it will be possible to confidently leave thegenerator for extended periods and know that it will start andstop like clockwork.

Models are available to power submersible pumps in bothsingle and three phase up to a 5 horsepower pump, CenterPivot generators are all three phase and can be used topower pivots up to 9 spans with 5 horsepower end guns. Inthe conventional generator YTB range models go up to10KVAsingle or three phase.

By the time this newsletter reaches our dealers pricelists andfull colour brochures will have been received by all on theseexciting new generators, if not, call your local sales officeand we’ll get them to you immediately.

SE Power Equipment is an Australian owned company thatwas formed in 1981 for the sole purpose of designing, manufac-turing, works testing, installing and maintaining a wide range ofproducts. These products include turn key installations de-signed and constructed to customer’s specifications.

Their products include a wide range of standard equipmentrelative to the energy industry. You may recognise the followingbrand names: MEGA–GEN - Diesel driven power plants,ENERGEN - Gas driven power plants including combined heatcycle power plants and steam turbine driven generators,MIDNITE- LITE and METRO-LITE - Mobile lighting plants,MEGA-PUMP - Electric, diesel and gas driven pumping setsand WASTE GAS FLARES.

Aggreko, one of the worlds largest Generator Rentalcompanies, asked SE Power Equipment to design andmanufacture a combination of 16kva and 33kva diesel generatorsets that would be used in the Hire Industry.

Noise levels and accurate power performance were critical.Aggreko had called for noise levels of 64dba to be reached at 1metre, environmental specifications to be met and the finishedgenset needed to be pleasing to the eye, so construction andfinish had to be of the highest quality.

After searching the diesel engine market, SE Power Equipmentchose Yanmar because of their renowned reliability, fuelefficiency and most importantly, their low noise levels.

Power Equipment’s Brisbane office received an order for 25engines made up of 4TNE88EG1MR four cylinder water cooledengines delivering 18 kw @1500rpm and 4TNE98EG1MR fourcylinder water cooled engines delivering 35kw @ 1500rpm.Electronic governors were fitted to the engines which were thendirect coupled to Stamford alternators and mounted in “allweather” sound attenuated canopies.

SE Power Equipment applied their usual professionalapproach to quality design and build, and the Generating setswere delivered on time.

If you have not been there, Vanuatu (previously the NewHebrides before independence in 1980) is an idyllic nation in theSouth Pacific roughly in a line between Cairns and Fiji. Soidyllic in fact that while stationed there during the Second WorldWar, it was the inspiration for James A Michener’s classic,Tales of the South Pacific. The French influence is also stillmost apparent with excellent cuisine and fine pastries (thoughtour sweet tooth Manager, Marine Group had put on weight! Ed.)

Vanuatu is also a very popular tourist destination and a regularstop over port of call for large cruising yachts during the (noncyclone) season. Many of these vessels feature either Yanmaror Westerbeke engines and or Westerbeke or Mase marineauxiliaries. There is also a small but strong local requirement forindustrial diesel engines to drive pumps etc.

Over the years Power Equipment has received many calls forassistance from the Vanuatu area and hence the need toupgrade the support on a local level.

Power Equipment has had a long time trading relationship withlocal agricultural specialist company Vanuatu AgriculturalSupplies (VAS) with VAS placing many of the smaller range ofYanmar industrial diesel engines in the field. This will remainand VAS is pleased support all such units with genuine Yanmarparts supplied via Power Equipment.

For the marine market, operators will have a choice from eitherof two of the local leading marine support companies, BodiamEngineering Pacific or 17° 44’ South. Both companies that haveextensive hands on experience and would be only too delightedto support operators with genuine Yanmar and Mase spareparts as well as providing a comprehensive range of othermarine services. And for the yachting fraternity, do not alsoforget the range of premium quality Gori propellers.

The whole intent is for our customers to enjoy improved on theground support via strong local companies. Companies whoenjoy what they do, and are pleased to be associated with all ofthe products proudly distributed by Power Equipment. We willbring you other South Pacific developments in future issues.

In 1992 Power Equipment opened it’s Queensland division byway of appointing Ray Harris as Power Equipment’s Qld SalesManager. Ray worked from his home up until February 1997.

Due to Yanmar’s major thrust into the larger horsepowerPowerboat Market, there was a clear need for Power Equip-ment to have their own Sales and Service operation inBrisbane, thus Power Equipment’s Brisbane Branch wasopened on the 3rd of February 1997 on the banks of the

Brisbane River in Bulimba andmore key personnel wereappointed to assist Ray.

With sales increasing and theintroduction of more Yanmarproducts the team at PE Qldwere growing out of theirpremises at Bulimba, so yetagain time to move on.
