Our Power Quality Surveys cover the suite of all Power Quality parameters, including:

Voltage Transient Disturbances and Voltage Sags/Swell are also recorded based on triggered and captured events. Detailed findings, their interpretation and practical solutions are included in all our reports.

We use high end power quality analyzers such as the Unipower Unilyzer 902 to conduct our surveys. These power quality analyzers are high performance instruments used for simultaneous disturbance and norm compliance measurements. We identify true three-phase measurements, including voltage quality parameters such as unbalance (IEC 61000-4-30), harmonics (IEC 61000-47) and flicker (IEC 61000-4-15).

CASE STUDY – CEMENT FACTORY

A Sunday evening, 8.30pm, a cement factory in Ireland suddenly came to a complete stop. Garrett Kelly from Powerpoint Engineering Ltd was called in to investigate.

Eight years earlier the factory had installed PQ Secure system and a UP 2210 for post-processing of data. The meter was still logging as it should and after downloading data, investigation showed an arcing earth fault causing the interruption. Yet more important was that the data showed that the shutdown could have been avoided.

PQ Secure is designed to be an early-warning system so after a system upgrade PQ Secure is now in use documenting as before and at the same time alerting for abnormal values and disturbances. More UP 2210s have also been added to strategic connections.

CASE STUDY - VOLTAGE SAG – PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY

This is a synopsis of Power Quality case study regarding the phenomenon of Voltage Sag experienced at a pharma plant.

SITUATION/PROBLEM

A pharmaceutical company based in Dublin had two power quality analyzers (Unipower UP2210) installed on the LV side of their two 10kV Main Incoming Supplies. The site had been experiencing some critical sags at their incoming supply. The supply authority had advised that they had experienced no issues on their supply that matched up with the occurring power quality events on site.

The Unipower PQ Secure Software for the installed analyzers yielded conflicting reports. Supply #1 indicated that the incoming supply was the origin of the Voltage Sag, whilst Supply #2 indicated that the Voltage Sag was actually being caused by the connected load at the plant.

SOLUTION

After consultation and review with Powerpoint Engineering Ltd, it was advised that the conflicting PQ Secure reports were accurate. There was a large connected load which was generating large inrush currents causing the voltage supply to sag. The supply to this load was being disturbed and the connected power quality analyzer recognised the direction of the Voltage Sag event – i.e. from the load.

The Voltage Sag was so severe that it was causing the high voltage supply to be affected, and therefore affecting the other supply also. The plant also utilised a portable Power Quality Analyzer (Unipower Unilyzer 901). This portable power quality analyser was used by the pharmaceutical company to identify the source of this recurring Sag event.

Remedial action was taken on the connected equipment, and good power quality was restored to the plant.

Load Profile Surveys

Our Surveys are typically used for evaluating transformer loads and connected load power factor.

All Load Profile Studies include measurements for a typical load cycle:• The site load [kW]• Apparent power/MIC [kVA]• Power factor• Maximum/minimum and average values of Voltage• Load Current & Current Spikes

Load Profile Surveys can be used to evaluate available capacity of existing transformers, available current carrying capacity of existing cables or suitability/performance of power factor correction equipment.

Our detailed findings, their interpretation and recommendations are included in all our survey reports. A typical survey is carried out over a one-week period. Reports are prepared, after removal of power monitoring systems and equipment, in a prompt manner.

CASE STUDY - ENERGY METERING – LARGE DATA CENTRE

This is a synopsis of an energy monitoring case study relating to the design and supply of an award winning electrical energy metering system for a large data centre in Dublin. MITIE Facilities Management & Powerpoint Engineering Ltd collaborated in the design, installation and commissioning of the Electrical Energy Metering System.

SITUATION/PROBLEM

A large data centre based in Dublin sought to implement ISO 50001 - Energy Management at its facility. The objective of this new EU standard for energy awareness is to help organisations use energy more efficiently and save money as a consequence. A further benefit of this is it will help to conserve resources and tackle climate change. ISO 50001 encourages organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently through the development of an energy management system.

The standard provides a framework of requirements for organisations to:• Deploy a policy for more efficient energy use• Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy• Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use and measure the results• Review how well the policy works and continually improve energy management.

The Data Centre Manager, as part of the requirements in implementing ISO 50001, has to account for where the energy it is using is going to ensure that it is being used efficiently. The Data Centre consists of approximately 20 data halls with a significant number of servers in each data hall. The energy costs associated with the Data Centre are in the region of €3,000,000 per annum.

SOLUTION

The Data Centre put in a place a team of professionals with the relevant expertise to help implement this new standard. This team consisted of Powerpoint Engineering Ltd, experts in the design, supply and installation of bespoke energy metering systems based on client requirements and MITIE Facilities Management, the resident Facility and Energy Managers with the relevant Facilities Management expertise and on-site knowledge.

There was significant collaboration between all parties through the duration of this award wining project to ensure the delivery of a solution which sufficiently met the needs and objectives of the client.

Performing load profile studies can provide a detailed footprint of the site load at a given time – however, the installation of an Energy Management System provides continuous measurements in the electrical network and detailed reporting on the site load. Electrical Network Monitoring Systems can also be installed for continuous monitoring of the site supply power quality. This is typically the first step towards achieving EN ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Certification.

CASE STUDY - ELECTRICITY, GAS METER & WATER METER INSTALLATION

This is a synopsis of power quality case study regarding the installation of electrical energy meters, gas meters and water meters at a third level education institution. An ongoing contract with the tertiary education institution has seen the installation of a large number of electrical energy meters, gas meters and water meters which are all connected over the site LAN back to a central PC.

SITUATION/PROBLEM

The college had a requirement to assess the carbon footprint, energy usage and associated costs with the various buildings and supplied services throughout the entire campus.

It was first decided to measure electricity, gas and water usage at the main supply points. Data logging and easy to use regular reporting software was required. Due to the size of the campus, there was a requirement to transmit the measure data via the college local area network.

OUTCOME

Powerpoint Engineering Ltd installed an energy metering system using Socomec Diris and Countis meters with Vision Control Software. This included electrical energy meters at the two main switchrooms, at each circuit on the main switchboards. Some existing water and gas meters were utilised where pulse outputs were available. Where gas and water meters did not exist, new meters were fitted and interfaced with the energy metering system.

As energy readings were gathered, large load consumers could be identified. The buildings and estate office implemented adjustments to the building management system to make energy savings where possible. In other cases new technologies were installed, such as high efficiency lighting. The result of these works could be monitored using the energy metering system installed, justifying the investment and validating the payback periods.This lead to further extension of the metering system and further installations of new energy saving and energy efficiency plant. The metering system is currently monitoring in excess of 200 measurment points.

The most recent development has been the identification of the base load to an area of the campus, the gas consumption and water usage was also monitored. From collation of measured data from the metering system a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) system was sized and installed. The performance of this CHP plant is now being monitored by the same system.

The Unipower Unilyzer 902 Power Analyzer is a portable power analyser that records power quality measurements in out-of-the-control-room environments.

The Unilyzer 902 power analyzer is a dust- and splash-proof (IP65), norm-compliant (IEC 61000-4-30, Class A) and 3rd party-certified field instrument. Using DSP (Digital Signal Processor) the Unilyzer 902 measures all periods without time gaps. The new Sineax A series Multifunctional Power Monitor is used for the measurement and display of all values of a 3-phase current system. The Sineax A series Multifunction Power Measuring Instrument comes complete with with System Analysis, featuring Single phase, 3/4 wire balanced, 3/4 wire unbalanced connection types, and spring clamps or screw clamps terminals.

Sineax A210, A220, A230 Features:

• Rational and economic measurement - 48 measurands, 8 energy meters, average and max./min. value functions. The electrical system can be comprehensively assessed in all 4 quadrants.

• Displays - The measurands are displayed by high-contrast, 14 mm high, dimmable LEDs with 3 digits and sign (energy meters 8 digits, frequency 4 digits).

• Meters - The integrated energy meters record active energy (incoming/outgoing) and reactive energy (inductive/capacitive). If the digital input of the extension module is used for switching the tariff, the number of active meters is doubled.

• Outputs - There are 2 S0 outputs that can be used for controlling relays. Energy impulses or as an alternative, the status of the programmable limits can be output.

In addition to the features of the Sineax A210 and Sineax A220, the Sineax A230 power monitoring device provides functions for system and load analysis. The system and load analysis is done by measurement of harmonics, THD, asymmetry, comprehensive average and max/min values. The dimensions of the Sineax A230 Multifunctional Power Monitor are 144 x 144 x 46 mm. It is designed for application in high, medium and low voltage systems. Any current and voltage transformers are taken into account in the calculation of the measured values. The Sineax A230 also features Clip-on extension module with average value and load profile recording, RS-232/485 interface, MODBUS, synchronizing input, switchover of high/low tariffs. Socomec Control Vision Software is a software package that processes data read by the Socomec Diris Am, A20, A40, A41, Ap, M, Mh, C , CC, CM, CMv2 measurement units and COUNTIS Ci pulse concentrators.

Socomec Control Vision Software operates in a Windows XP Service pack 3 or VISTA environment. The minimum configuration required is a PC with a minimum 1.0 GHz processor, RAM 512 MB, at least 500 MB space available on the hard disk and a screen with minimum resolution 1024×768.
