Year 6 Maths – week beginning 23rd March 2020
The children are familiar with Power Maths, which is the scheme of work we use as a school. It promotes the Mastery approach,
which encourages deep and long-lasting understanding of mathematical concepts. We also use the White Rose scheme of work,
which links closely to Power Maths and features many of the same representations, such as tens frames, number lines, part-whole
models, place value grids, bar models and others.
Power Maths lessons begin with the Discover section, which introduces the learning to be covered in that lesson. Please discuss this
with your child to help them make sense of it. The Share section explains the answers to the questions in the Discover section, and
the Think Together section allows children to have a go at applying what they have learned. After the Think Together section, the
children would normally work independently in their Practice Books, but during this period you can use White Rose Maths’ Home
Learning page. Simply select your year group, and look for the explanation video and independent activity that matches the lesson.
After the Think Together section is a Challenge, which you can use to extend your child’s learning if they feel confident to push
themselves on.
Tip: the characters on the Power Maths pages often have speech bubbles which give children hints about what to do. These are
very useful!
Power Maths – Term B – Unit 12 – Ratio and Proportion
We have recently started our unit on ratio and proportion, and we have learned about… how ratio is related to fractions and division.
We have already got a pretty solid grasp of this concept, so (hopefully) this will all be quite straightforward!
Monday 23rd – Ratio (3)
Tuesday 24th – Ratio (4)
Wednesday 25th – Scale drawings
Thursday 26th – Scale factors
Friday 26th – Similar shapes
