Power: As the new Sr. Pastor, what do you hope to bring or add to JCOP?

Dr. Jazz: Jericho already has a solid and a strong foundation by the Apostle Betty Peebles – a great ministry. I am not seeking to lay a foundation. I am seeking to build on the foundation. And that’s building the Word of God and the people of God. I am continuing the legacy that has already been set in that great house.

Power: What then is your vision for the future?

Dr. Jazz: Do greater works through the ministry of JCOP. To build a dream team to continue the legacy of Apostle Betty Peebles. To empower, educate and encourage people. And to tackle domestic violence in Prince George’s County.

Power: How do you think being a megachurch affects your ministry?

Dr. Jazz: It may be “mega” in building, but it’s “small” in spirit in terms of that people are connected to each other. So, size is not the thing. It’s where the

spirit is and the spirit of God resides ... and that place like in any other place, whether it’s large or small. So, our focus is not on the Megachurch. It’s making sure that we’re doing the will of God and meeting the needs

of the people. I have seen smaller churches that made a tremendous impact in the community. I think God gives you a greater responsibility when you have a megachurch.

Power: With such a busy schedule, how do you get to everyone?

Dr. Jazz: I follow the Moses father-in-law advice. I am over everything but I am not in everything. In this season it’s not about one pastor, it’s NOT about solo ministry. It’s about being able to have people in place that can nurture and minister to the folks. So at Jericho we have a slew of elders, deacons and ministers that takes on that responsibility of making sure we can reach and teach and we can impact in every member of our congregation. We know everybody may want to get to the pastor but our big thing is more to get everybody to Jesus. It’s not

“PowersPeaks” with Dr. Jazz, sr. Pastor Jericho city of Praiseon her newest milestone September marks the installation of Dr. Jasmin “Jazz” Sculark (internationally known as the Daughter of Thunder) as Sr. Pastor of Jericho City of Praise (JCOP) in Landover, MD. She shares her vision…

about getting to the pastor, it’s getting to Jesus and then having a strong organization where people are in place that there is no member abandoned, there is no member left behind or no member that feels forsaken.

Power: How do you stay so humble?

Dr. Jazz: Listen, you stay humbled and grounded when you know that everything that has happened in your life up to this point and everything that is going to happen is only God!

Power: How do you avoid, minimize and handle the drama that our preachers are increasingly facing these days?

Dr. Jazz: First of all through prayer and staying in the Word. But I’ve surrounded myself with some people who I consider wise counsel, my spiritual advisors. Because I believe every pastor needs a pastor. Every pastor needs somebody. Every pastor needs a place where they can go apart before they fall apart. Those people I’ve called Bishop Jakes, Dr. Charles Booth, and Pastor John K. Jenkins and Co-Pastor Susie Owens and Bishop Millicent Hunter.

Power: What are your thoughts on using technology for ministry and church?

Dr. Jazz: I love it and we use it all. I think as long as the message remains the same, you can use a different methodology. And technology, social media is a great methodology to get the gospel all across this nation and

all across this world. So I welcome technology. And I think it’s a great enhancement to the body of Christ and to the local church. We stream our service. We’re on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram. And we get to reach a whole slew of people without me having (to) even get on a plane.

Power: Tell us about your upcoming installation events.

Dr. Jazz: The installation is September 4-7 (Thursday-Sunday). The 4th is the man who ordained me, Pastor Charles Booth, Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, Columbus, OH. Friday is Pastor John K. Jenkins, First Baptist Church of Glen Arden. Saturday we are having a community event. And Sunday morning Co-Pastor Susie Owens, a powerful role model in my life. Then Sunday night is the official service. And Bishop TD Jakes is doing not just preaching but the actual installation.

Think On These ThingsBy Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

Is Grace Enough? My grace is sufficient for thee. ~2 Corinthians 12:9

Life is difficult. But we have help. Grace is a great help.

My faith teaches me that the grace of God is sufficient. When I despair because a loved one is suffering and I cannot help, I remember that grace is sufficient.

When I am standing in the unemployment line or waiting for a relief check to come, I remember that grace is sufficient.

When a distraught co-worker unloads on me because I happen to be the person standing in front of him or her at the moment, I remember that grace is sufficient.

I define grace as the safety net through which the experiences God has for us are filtered. This means that what happens to us comes to us filtered through the love of God for us. Nothing can get to us unless it comes through the grace of God. And it all serves a purpose.

These experiences can be good, hard, easy, difficult, shameful, or wonderful. They are all meant to teach us, mold us, grow us, and draw us closer to the God of grace.

These experiences have permission from grace to enter our lives. Each experience brings us something: patience, perseverance, courage, understanding, love, boldness, and humor.

We must cooperate with grace. We must recognize this mighty safety net so that we are not afraid of what experiences bring and so that we learn from them all.

As we navigate through this complicated world, what has grace to offer us?

It is enough to know that the grace of God catches all of our life experiences and filters them for our good. It is enough to know that the grace of God catches all that comes our way and uses it to achieve God’s ultimate purpose for us.

Grace offers us the assurance that everything that happens to us is transformed into something useful in our lives.

Ann W. Kinard “To God Be The Glory”

THE CHURCH TEA

In the aftermath of the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by Officer darren Wilson, it’s hard to image that something so horrible could possibly generate anything positive. However, witnessing so many people from all walks of life arise to express a righteous indignation was reminiscent of a truth Martin Luther King and so many others fought and died for. No doubt future elections in Ferguson, Missouri will reflect a more diverse group of people elected. Voter apathy is a real problem in the failing economic areas of our cities.

Perhaps this tragic event will at least cast more light on the need for the funding and support of organizations such as the Police Athletic Leagues (PAL). This group provides programs that include sports, after school programs and educational-cultural opportunities. It offers a unique opportunity for our youth to interact with police in a positive light. PAL is a mixture of police officers, civilian staff, community-business leaders and a board of directors to oversee selected programs.

This does not eliminate the complex and systemic problems associated with our young people. As parents we worry about our children, and for the most part many of them have led a life far more privileged than was provided to us. Still, the respect for elders is almost non-existent, our morals are corrupted, and we are surviving on the prayers of our forefathers.

But God has a way of using any circumstance to his divine intention. This situation has been used to generate a much needed discussion and united people in a worthy cause for justice. The lives of our children are at stake – especially our sons, who are under attack and being killed before they become productive mighty men of God.

Genesis 50:20 - But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.
