Just as a chain is os strong as its weakest link, so an electronic device is as efficient as its smallest lube. That's our TV service problem of the moment; there aren't enough tubes.

Servicemen are called upon once more to make sure no good tube is returned. In the past, servicemen some­times sent in three or four tubes from a chassis because they forgot which was defective and time wos loo precious lo recheck. Now tubes are more precious than rime. Recently Bill Zaun' s qual­ity control group made a sampling of returned tubes; discovered 40 per­cent were OK on all-plant tests, including operation in receivers.

Tube types for which demand ex­ceeds availability ore 5U4G, 1 2AU7, 6SN7, 6BG6G, 6AU6, 6CB6; the 16" kinescopes, 16GP.d & l 6AP4; the 5-inch projector kine, 5TP4. Tube sockets for 6(86's are being rewired ot the factory to accommodate 6AG5's. The 5U4G, in shortest supply, is being re­placed by 5T 4, available bul limited, at three limes the cost. A third sub­stitution has been abandoned (5R4GY)

We, like everybody else, are having lo get in line to buy tubes from the department and in some instances supplement where we can our ration from that source.
