The AgriCool® shed ventilation system has been specifically developed for the Australian

poultry market. It can achieve power savings of up to 80% and hence significantly reduce

total running costs of broiler sheds. Installs across Australia have proven that AgriCool®

fans can significantly reduce the system load of the whole shed while at the same time

providing higher air velocity for cooling. AgriCool® fans provide effective and reliable

growing conditions for broilers through even airflow and higher redundancy.

Andreas Dubs, Executive Director, Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc

Things are not getting any simpler. On the one hand, there are fewer and fewer people who have a personal understanding and knowledge and experience of food production; on the other hand, consumers are more concerned about how the food they are eating has been produced and where it comes from.

This mismatch between understanding and expectations is arguably one of the main challenges that agricultural industries face today. There is little point in complaining about this, but much to be said for tackling the issue in a proactive and positive manner. Much of the activity the Australian Chicken Meat Federation has been involved in over recent months and years falls squarely into this category.

It is hard to believe that this is already my 10th annual contribution to this publication, but this gives me an ideal excuse for a bit of crystal ball gazing into the next ten years, looking at what part the chicken meat industry might be playing by 2025.

There are a range of major issues confronting the world. How to deal with terrorism, the ever increasing divide between the poor and the rich, and maintaining global financial stability are all questions of world significance. These are issues that face all of us and while we must take an active interest, the Australian chicken meat industry does not have any special role.

Matters are quite different however regarding two other key global issues, namely climate change and food security. These are arguably the most fundamental challenges to be faced over the next twenty years and the chicken meat industry is well placed to make a significant and positive contribution to a successful resolution. Why do I say this?

With the world population expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, and agricultural production already contributing a very significant part of greenhouse gas emissions, how we feed the world plays a crucial role in the way the balancing act between producing more food and reducing the

ACMF - Consumer expectations driving change, but chicken is here to stay

carbon footprint will take its course. The simple fact is that chicken meat has by far the lowest environmental footprint of all land-based meat proteins. Its production does not require large amounts of land for its farming and, most importantly, chickens are very efficient in transforming grain into meat. Thus, on a global scale, substituting chicken for red meat has a very positive impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

Given the fact that suitable land and other resources are also limited, more emphasis on chicken meat is the only viable solution for meeting the ever increasing demand for animal protein. Of course a reduction in meat consumption would be another possible solution, but given the rise in wealth in large developing economies such as China and the increase in meat consumption that invariably comes with this, there is absolutely no indication that such a change in consumption pattern is likely or even possible in the medium term. All the world’s statistics, modelling and predictions lead to the same conclusion: chicken meat will remain a major and growing source of meat protein.

Having said all this, is the increased consumption of chicken in Australia driven by these global considerations? Indirectly, yes, since the affordability of chicken meat is the result of the same characteristics that also make it the meat of the future in terms of sustainability. But in my view more important is the fact that consumers love chicken meat for what it is, a versatile, nutritious and healthy food of consistently high quality at an affordable price. What more could you wish for?

It is great to be part of an industry with such a positive outlook making an important contribution to the economy. Of course we do face some challenges in the area of animal welfare and particularly consumers’ perception of the welfare of meat chickens. Animal welfare is important to all of us in the industry and requires constant attention through research and the implementation of improved husbandry practices. It also requires on-going communication with consumers to

ensure that those who are interested are fully informed and understand what we do and why.

The Australian Chicken Meat Federation (ACMF) sees this as a major and on-going focus of its work. This year, we have launched a new monthly blog making our information available through this new channel and promoting access to all of our information sources via Facebook and Twitter as well as our website and regular email updates.

The wide adoption of the RSPCA Approved Farming standard over the past year is a reflection of the industry responding to consumer and customer (supermarkets, fast food chains etc) demand. It is important for all parties to acknowledge the very real costs that changes towards higher welfare farming systems represent. It is also essential that standards be based on science rather than potentially ill-informed perceptions. This is the only way that the birds will truly benefit in the long-run.

As I write this, I see that Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Ian Chubb AC recently announced that the new Commonwealth Science Council chaired by the PM has identified food as one of the eight national priority areas for research and development (R&D). Our industry has a long-standing involvement in R&D through ACMF’s participation in the Chicken Meat Program (delivered through the Rural Industries R&D Council) and membership of the Poultry CRC. We look forward to continuing to work with universities and research organisations to keep innovating in areas that are key to us, including chicken nutrition, bird health, welfare and biosecurity.

I wish you and your families a successful and rewarding 2015.

Peter Bedwell, Editor, Poultry Digest

After a tough year where a combination of retailer, animal activist and regulator pressures made life more difficult for layer farmers in 2014, the news, announced at the Australian Egg Industry Forum held in Canberra on November that Aldi would not only stock cage laid eggs but actively promote them as a customer choice along with barn laid and free range options, was well received.

Aldi Purchasing Director Dean Fleishmann, speaking at the AECL Forum, outlined his company’s rapid growth plans and its philosophies in forming strong and lasting supplier relationships.

In a recent article run in the financial press, Aldi Chief Executive Tom Daunt expressed optimism that his company, “could increase sales volume to exceed $9 billion in the $85 billion national grocery market: sales in 2014 grew by more than 13% to 6 billion,” he was quoted in the article run in the Australian Financial Review (21st January 2015).

Coles and Woolies might be reviewing their decision to phase out cage laid eggs in their stores as announced during 2014.

Also announced at the AECL Forum was a determination to reverse the gains and influence of strident animals right groups and their supporters by initiating programs to tell the farmer’s story.

The appointment of Dr Kylie Hewson, who gained her PHD during the first Poultry CRC, as AECL’s new R&D Project Manger

5

and her responsibility to develop ‘The Salmonella Initiative’ will be an important step in ensuring better food safety for consumers and improving standards throughout the food chain.

Salmonella nearly destroyed the UK egg industry in the 1980s and pro active work to prevent such an event happening in Australia is vital.

The drive by animal rights groups, social activists, and the ACCC in their ‘truth in labelling’ policies has meant that there could be a rapid growth in underfunded small scale free range farms run by individuals with less than optimal experience in biosecurity management.

Having an initiative in place to not only prevent salmonella outbreaks but also to trace the source and nature of transmission is of critical importance to the industry as a whole.

Though the entry of Aldi, and possible other retail routes for the sale of cage eggs to consumers, may halt the decline of cage egg sales in Australia, it is a fair bet that the market for both barn laid and free range will stay strong.

The growth in sales of RSPCA reared broiler chickens has been phenomenal in 2014 and it is probable that RSPCA approved barn laid and free range layer farms will grow in number in 2015.

As the RSPCA does not approve any cage laid systems there is certainly an opportunity for a body like AECL to promote their own accreditation scheme that will deliver greater confidence to both retailers and consumers.

Much has been made by our current Federal Government about free trade deals, particularly those negotiated with South Korea, Japan and a China – a trade deal that is still a work in progress.

So far there has not been much good news for the poultry industry and in the case of the deal with Japan, Australia has agreed to supply vast quantities of liquefied coal seam gas which we don’t actually have: the net result will be a dramatic increase in the cost of heating our farms.

That, combined with increasing electricity costs may drive more farmers to look at alternative energy sources: methane production from waste on larger farms and solar panels on smaller operations.

Perhaps of greatest concern in 2015 is the TPP.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a proposed regional regulatory and investment treaty. As of 2014 twelve countries throughout the Asia-Pacific region have participated in negotiations on the TPP: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United States, and Vietnam.

While there may be more opportunities to export to eggs to some of those countries there may well be increased pressure to import from countries like Chile which has a sophisticated layer industry and is very cost competitive: it already exports eggs to key markets like Japan.

Watch this space, very little detail is available from the Federal Government on the form the TPP will finally take.

Mingan Choct, CEO of Poultry CRC

During the past year, the Poultry CRC has focussed on transferring our research and education outcomes to end users, as many of our projects are now completed and some students graduated.

In the meantime, our progress towards completing our milestones has been steady. The following are some highlights of our research, utilisation, education and communication activities from the past year.

One of the objectives of the Poultry CRC is to produce evidence-based tests for the welfare status of birds. Our researchers have found that the expression of some microRNAs differs between eggs from relaxed and stressed hens. This is a world first discovery that could revolutionise the way bird welfare is assessed.

Another very exciting development is the use of a fluorescent protein to differentiate male and female embryos.

This technology has the potential to offer a lasting solution to what is seen as a major welfare issue faced by the egg industry - the discarding of day-old male chicks.

Wastes from hatcheries, processing plants, and production (daily mortalities, litter and spent hens) are a major impediment to the sustainability of the poultry industry. We have tackled poultry waste stream issues from a number of angles.

First, the easy, low-cost approach of composting was investigated and implemented via our industry partners. Second, value-adding to wastes using both anaerobic and aerobic digestion technologies was trialled to address hatchery and processing wastes as well as daily mortalities.

Third, environmental concerns associated with composting, and the safe use of poultry compost, were carefully investigated by meticulously studying odour emissions from compost heaps and viral survival in poultry compost.

In addition, the Poultry CRC is working closely with local and state governments to incorporate poultry compost into the national Fertcare Program.

Another important area that affects sustainability of the poultry industry is feed, because feed

Poultry CRC - Meeting the milestones for 2014

accounts for 65-70% of live production costs. Therefore a small improvement in feed efficiency means millions of dollars of savings.

We have completed a project on the inclusion of whole seed canola into poultry feed in close collaboration with industry. Canola is now the No. 1 vegetable protein source produced in Australia and the proper use of whole seed canola in poultry feed is of immense economic importance.

Our education achievements have exceeded what we originally pledged to the Commonwealth. The success of the roll out of the Teachers Resource Kit, delivery of VET training courses across the industry, offering professional development opportunities to our students, and engagement of the industry and general public through Workshops and Open Days has continued.

What is worth highlighting is the strong industry commitment to our education program. For instance, almost all our postgraduates who have completed their theses have found employment in research

organisations or in industry. Our industry internship program

has proven highly successful. We have also launched the X Program (Early Career Support) where young researchers are encouraged to spend up to six months with industry to understand the key issues affecting productivity.
