Chicken – going from strength to strength

Andreas Dubs, Executive Director,Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc

There is no doubt that chicken hasbecome the most consumed meat inAustralia and looking at ABARE’s projec-tions for the years ahead of us, the steadygrowth of consumption will continue whilered meat’s share is forecasted to decline at asimilar rate.

The quality, consistency and ease ofpreparation are certainly major assets ofchicken meat in the eyes of consumers.Chicken meat is also seen as excellent valuefor money – an attribute that particularlyresonated with consumers over the pastyear when consumers were under greaterfinancial pressure.

The range of products available to consumers, both in supermarkets and inquick service restaurants, is also increasingweek after week.

The economic facts are definitely infavour of our industry and its long termgrowth. The efficiencies achieved throughyears of improvements in genetics, feed andhusbandry methods have established a solidbase for ongoing sustainable growth.

Our future success will not come automatically. It will require on-going andsustained investment both by growers andprocessors as well as investment as anindustry into research into improvementsin technology, animal welfare, bird health, food safety and environmental manage-ment. The industry has for many yearsfunded relevant research within universities, public laboratories, CSIRO and elsewhereon the basis of a 50%/50% split betweenthe industry contribution and theGovernment’s contribution.

The Government last year announced areview by the Productivity Commission ofthese research and development fundingarrangements which are in place acrossmost rural industries.

This review is still on-going and islooking into the funding as well as theorganisational arrangements of ruralresearch corporations. ACMF, on behalf ofthe chicken meat industry, made the pointto the review that our industry feels wellserved by the current arrangements, whichprovide a significant say to the industry asto what type of research is needed.

Our submission also noted the substan-tial public benefit that flows from much ofthe improvements that result from theindustry’s implementation of R&D out-comes. We argued strongly that many of

the suggested changes, such as amalgama-tion of smaller corporations or reduction inthe public funding formula, would becounterproductive. We will have to awaitthe Commissions’s final report in early2011 to know its final verdict on thesematters.

Chicken has had an increased profilethrough some major advertising campaignsby processors, retailers and quick servicerestaurant chains. Particularly notable wasthe campaign re-launching the Stegglesbrand as well as their No Hormones campaign.

Free range is becoming a major segment in our industry, reflecting consid-erable consumer demand for this product.Despite these developments, our recent survey about consumers’ knowledge of thedifferent farming systems revealed a greatlack of understanding. Most notably, amajority of consumers believe that ourindustry uses cages.

The education of consumers is there-fore a long-term undertaking which willnot bring changes overnight but neverthe-less is an essential activity for the industry’slong-term success. We are committed tothis process and will continue to look forsuitable opportunities to make consumersand in particular the young consumersmore knowledgeable about where theirchicken comes from.

The international scene continues to bedominated by Brazil and the USA as themajor exporters of chicken meat. Russia islooking to become self-sufficient in chickenmeat and a range of technical and tradebarriers Russia imposed over the past 12months had substantial impact on globalchicken meat trade. Our trade exposure isrelatively minor. Nonetheless, difficulties inaccessing the Hong Kong market in mid2010 did create some difficulties for ourexporters.

On the import side, we have seen anincrease in trade from New Zealand incooked chicken meat. The range ofimported canned and retorted soups andmeals including chicken has increased onsupermarket shelves but the overall volumeof product coming into the countryremains very small. No importer hassought a permit to import chicken meatunder the new protocols established inearly 2009. This is in line with our assess-ment at that time that it would be difficult

for any potential exporting country to meetthe quarantine requirements.

A main foundation stone of our industryis good farm biosecurity. This ensures thehealth of our birds and also contributes tothe safety of the food that the consumerspurchase. Early in 2010, the revised andimproved National Farm BiosecurityManual for Chicken Growers was releasedand distributed widely through processors, farm associations and ACMF. We hopethis publication will help maintain biosecu-rity as a priority for all chicken growers.

The industry has not been free of set-backs with lingering ILT outbreaks in threestates, but particularly Victoria and NSW,as well as the devastating fire at Ingham’sprocessing plant in Somerville.

What will the year ahead bring? TheFSANZ Poultry Standard which wasfinalised in May this year will have to beimplemented by each state by May 2012.Discussions are currently underway with anumber of State regulators and we hopethat a reasonably uniform implementationcan be achieved, particularly as it applies tofarms.

State regulators have agreed that on-farm implementation of the FSANZPoultry Standard will be satisfied by havingthe National Farm Biosecurity Manualimplemented. This is a good outcomesince it acknowledges that the measureswhich are well known to our industry andare of great direct benefit to farmers interms of animal health, also effectivelyensure the safety of the food that is beingproduced. We plan to offer some trainingon all aspects of farm management thatrelate to biosecurity and food safety duringthe second half of 2011.

Finally, I would like to take this oppor-tunity to wish all of you a successful andprosperous new year.

AECL: The egg industry’s CorporateSocial Responsibility (CSR)

Growth in the Australian egg industrycontinues unabated driven by increases indemand for eggs reflected through salesand consumption levels monitored by theAustralian Egg Corporation Limited(AECL) on a regular basis. With this comes an increasing respon-

sibility for the egg industry to be transpar-ent, ethical and responsive to the needs ofAustralian consumers. The egg industry experienced signifi-

cant and record-breaking retail salesgrowth during 2010. Retail sales volumestotaled 122.6 million dozen, an increase of7.8% on 2009 levels and grossing $490million in revenue, up 5.2%, setting anew annual sales record! To finish the calendar year, December

sales set a new monthly sales record of11.433 million dozen, up by 10% onDecember 2009 levels and up by over23% on the 5-year average for the month. On a segment basis, cage egg volumes

also reached a new sales record in 2010totaling 71.9 million dozen, up by 1.8%on 2009 levels, with December sales alsoreaching new heights. Barn-laid eggs totaled 11.6 million

dozen during 2010, up by a massive 34%on 2009 levels with again December setting a new sales record. Free range eggs continued increasing,

albeit at a slower rate, to reach 34.8 million dozen, up by 15% on 2009 levelswith again December proving to be a massive sales month. These sales figures continue the long

term upward sales trend and growth of theegg category ahead of increases in theAustralian population resulting in percapita growth year-on-year. The figures also reflect the validity of

all recognized egg production systems inthe market addressing different needsfrom what can only be described as adynamic and ever-changing market place. As a result, the egg industry caters forboth emotional shoppers who are moreengaged in the egg purchase decision andthe respective product ranges and brandsavailable, and rational shoppers who areless engaged purchasing mainly on price.Despite the different segments in the

market, there is one common threadamong all shoppers, the desire to purchasea quality product that is safe, available andaffordable.

AECL played a key role in developingthe International Egg Commission’s (IEC)vision statement that states “As egg farm-ers from around the world, we care about:producing the highest quality, safest product; our environment; providingchoice; the welfare of our hens; and feeding our growing population.”One core program that will assist

industry achieve this to a recognised standard is the enhancement and interna-tional recognition or accreditation of the

Australian industry’s Quality Assurance(QA) program currently titled EggCorpAssured (ECA). The standards that underpin the

program are being continually reviewedand updated by egg producers and selectedexperts in the fields of food safety, animalwelfare, environmental stewardship, prod-uct labeling and animal health. While AECL is confident of the

governance systems and third-party independent auditing processes that formthe basis of the QA program, theenhanced program will be launched to theegg industry during the first half of 2011and to consumers for the first timeapproximately six months later. I implore all egg producers to consider

adopting the QA program in their business as a sign of your commitment toproducing quality eggs that will helpaddress the industry’s Corporate SocialResponsibility of producing a natural, high quality, staple, protein product whichis in greater demand each year.

James Kellaway, Managing Directorof Australian Egg Corporation Limited

Poultry CRC – new beginnings

Over a year has passed since the PoultryCRC secured funding for another sevenand a half years. During 2010, the CRCproperly set up all the necessary governanceand management processes, approved 21research projects, and commenced most ofits education activities.

The Poultry CRC now has 32 partici-pants, including more than 95% of theAustralian poultry industry.

Many additional partners have joinedsince the new Poultry CRC commencedoperation in January 2010. This suggeststhat the CRC’s track record has been goodand current research and education programs attractive.

The new CRC’s programs are designedto address the major challenge of helpingAustralia achieve sustainable, ethical poultry production in the face of popula-tion growth and climate change.

The Poultry CRC’s final chapter willunfold over the next six and a half years, involving three programs with integratedresearch, development and education components. Program 1, Health &Welfare, will use frontier science to deliverpoultry health products and evidence-basedwelfare methodology to industry.

Program 2, Nutrition & Environment, will undertake research to link the funda-mental aspects of feeding to environmentaloutcomes. Program 3, Safe & Quality FoodProduction, is aimed at controlling food-

borne illnesses related to poultry products. The 21 approved projects involve

researchers from all of the CRC’s researchproviders and a good number from industry partners.

These projects cover approximately80% of the outputs identified in the CRC’sagreement with the Australian Government, including vaccines and vaccine antigens, rapid diagnostic tests for poultry diseases, novel therapeutics, delivery systems forbioactive materials, evidence-basedapproaches to bird welfare, nutrition andenvironment, and egg quality and foodsafety.

Many of these projects are progressingwell. There will be further project calls inthe future to fill the gaps for the remaining20% or so of outputs that will requireaddressing by 2017.

The CRC’s Education Program hasfocussed on bringing all its activities initiatedin the previous CRC to fruition. Thisincludes offering support to postgraduatescholars who had completed or continue topursue their higher degrees, providingscholarships to poultry health professionalsenrolled in the Avian Health Onlinecourse, revising and finalising books andother resources for the VocationalEducation and Training sector, and engag-ing schools for poultry related educationprojects, such as the very popular Teacher’sResource Kit, the award-winning poultry-hub.org www.poultryhub.org website andthe WPSA Schools Program.

In July, Mrs Liz Roan was appointedEducation Officer to focus on VocationalEducation and Training, a key area of thePoultry CRC’s Education Program. Liz hasa strong background in the fields of educa-tion, agriculture and information technology, and has tremendous experience in commu-nicating with primary producers.

All in all, it has been a busy but highlyproductive year for the Poultry CRC. Visitwww.poultrycrc.com.au and subscribe tothe eChook newsletter to keep up-to-datewith the new CRC’s progress.
