How to Potty Train a Toddler in Five Easy Steps

Potty training is a hard process that requires discipline and effort from both the parent and the child. It

will take a lot out of your time and you are required to work hard because it is a process that cannot be

done overnight. It is a good idea to lower your expectations with your child’s success, meaning, your

child will not get everything right the first time.

A simple tip to make the potty training process easier and more manageable is to be organized and

preparing a plan of action. You simply make a schedule and stick with it. Trust me, it will make a world of

difference when your training process is written out and in front of you. It will require effort to make the

schedule and map out the entire process but it will be worth it!

First Step

Make a daily schedule for your child. Children like to work in routines. If you establish a routine for your

child as to when they are supposed to use the potty, it will help them get used to it and not long after, it

will be a part of their daily routine and this will make it easier for you. Stick with the schedule and follow

the routine even if your child does not need to use the potty at the set time. At least, let them sit on the

toilet or the potty chair so that they will be more comfortable.

Second Step

Purchasing the right equipment can go a long way with the success of your potty training. Children love

it when they are given something that they can call their own. Providing them with a potty chair that can

be personalized will help them get more comfortable and they will no doubt, love using the potty. One

thing about potty training them using a regular toilet is that toilets can be hard to reach on their own.

Also, the flushing sound may startle them and make them frightened. Another thing is that if your child

accidentally falls in the toilet, it may take a long while for them to get over the fear of falling in again and

this can lead to an even longer potty training.

Step 3

Let them get comfortable in the bathroom and around the potty training products that will be used. This

is very important because kids will only do something if they are comfortable. Accompanying them to

the toilet even before the potty training process can be beneficial. Just make them comfortable and let

them play with the potty training equipments.

Step 4

Demonstration is a helpful tool that you should utilize. Children, even when they are able to

communicate, will not fully understand what we are trying to say. Sometimes, the best way to

communicate with a child to let them know what they are supposed to do is to demonstrate It to them.

For parents trying to potty train a boy, it’s perfectly fine to let them use the toilet or the potty chair

while sitting down. It will be easier and eventually, they will learn that boys should stand up when

peeing. For now, it’s fine to let them sit.

Step 5

Introduce your child to a rewards system where you give them rewards or treats when they try and

when they succeed in what you want them to do. This is a very powerful tool for potty training because

it can improve your child’s self esteem and it can also improve the child-parent relationship through

positive motivation.

These 5 simple steps can certainly help you when you are potty training your child. Just follow them and

in no time, you will get your child to use the potty. For more in depth approach on how to potty train,
