February 24th Design Online Auction

Lots begin closing at 10am (with lot 1000) on

Tuesday, February 24th.

Leave your bids online today!

Unlike Live Auctions, where all of the bidding takes place live starting at a set time, Timed Online Auctions feature online “ebay-style” bidding. Once registered to bid, you can leave a bid anytime from the auction’s start until the lot you are interested in closes. The highest bidder when the lot closes will be the successful bidder.

Please follow these directions for online bidding through Invaluable.com. Bidding is also available on Potomackcompany.com and Auctionzip.com. Please leave bids through only one site to avoid bidding against yourself.

First, go to Invaluable.com. Look in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage and click on CREATE ACCOUNT. Establish an account by registering with a username and password. At the prompt, please provide contact and credit card information.

To view our auction and place bids, follow the steps below:

On the Invaluable toolbar click “Auctioneer Directory”, select “P” then page down, click on “Potomack Company” and select the auction (click August Online Auction)

To bid, please click on “Get Approved to Bid” (Your request must be approved by the The Potomack Company, but you may begin bidding right away.)

Place your bid using numbers only (don’t use the $ sign) and follow prompts. If you are outbid, you will receive an email notification prompting you to bid again.

The lots will begin closing at 10am on Tuesday, February 24th with each lot closing staggered by one minute. The bidding time will extend if a bid is placed within five minutes of a lot’s scheduled closing (lots within five minutes of closing are in red, extended lots are noted). Invoices will be processed after all lots have closed. Buyer’s premium will be 20.5% on all lots in a Design Online Auction due to Invaluable’s 3% bidding fee for timed online auctions.

NOTE: Please hit “Refresh” frequently to update the time remaining on each lot, particularly as lots are closing on Tuesday, February 24th. Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome are recommended browsers for bidding. Apple Safari and Internet Explorer are NOT supported browsers. We also recommend bidding on a computer, rather than a tablet or smartphone, if possible.

Unframed; two signed and dated 1972 lower left, one signed and dated 1972 lower right (3) $150-200 Provenance: From the Estate of Irving B. Haynes Location: Born in Waterville, Maine, Irving Haynes studied musical composition and played a number of instruments. After a stint in the army during World War II, he attended Colby College, but soon transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence where he completed degree programs in both painting and architecture. Haynes worked for various Providence architectural firms, first as a draftsman and then an associate, moonlighting as a musician at various jazz clubs around Rhode Island. In 1968 he established his own architectural firm, Haynes Associates, which distinguished itself through award-winning restoration of many important historic buildings as well as new construction. In 1982 Haynes was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. In 1973 he began teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design where he continued up until his death. Haynes painted continuously throughout his architectural and teaching careers and was committed, for the most part, to non-representational imagery. He found inspiration primarily in the color relationships of nature, but also from extensive study of art history (with particular attention to Cezanne, Klee and the Cubists) as well as the science of vision. He exhibited regularly at the Providence Art Club, and showed as well at the Painting Center at New York City and the Virginia Lynch Gallery in Tiverton, Rhode Island. A retrospective exhibition of his work, with catalog, was presented in 2009 by the Newport Art Museum in Newport, Rhode Island. LIMITED GUARANTEE Notwithstanding the preceding paragraph, The Potomack Company does offer a limited guarantee that items that are offered for sale are not counterfeit, unless otherwise noted in the catalogue or at the time of the sale. A counterfeit for this purpose is defined as a modern fake or forgery that was made with the intent to deceive. If a buyer gives us notice within 14 days of the sale that an item that was purchased was a counterfeit and, within 7 days of such notice, provides a written report from an authority that demonstrates that the item was indeed counterfeit and that a fair reading of the catalogue description and the auctioneer’s statements at the time of the sale did not indicate this, then The Potomack Company will rescind the sale and refund the purchase price to the buyer. This guarantee is made only to the original buyer (i.e., a registered bidder) and does not extend to any subsequent purchasers. In any event, any liability that The Potomack Company has for such a sale is limited to the purchase price of the item sold. INSPECTION AND CONDITION REPORTS We strongly encourage you to come and examine lots that you are interested in purchasing. Although we do not include condition reports in this catalogue, our representatives are happy to assist you in determining the condition of items that you are interested in as they are able. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any opening bid (or advance from an accepted opening bid) that he believes, in his sole discretion, is not commensurate with the value of the lot or that does not meet the reserve, and withdraw that lot from sale. ONLINE BIDDING Any bids placed online during this timed online auction will be subject to Invaluable’s online bidding fee equal to 3% of the hammer price, in addition to The Potomack Company’s 17.5% buyer’s premium. This includes all lots purchased during a “Design Online” auction. BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITIES If you are the buyer of the lot, title to the items in the lot passes to you as soon as the Auctioneer’s hammer falls. At that time, you assume full risk and responsibility for the items you have purchased. You must then pay the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium and Virginia sales tax, as applicable. The sum of the buyer’s premium and the hammer price equals the purchase price. The Virginia sales tax is calculated as 6% of the purchase price. Although you are encouraged to take your property with you the day of the auction, items may be left on our premises for up to two working days after the sale. After that time, however, we reserve the right to transfer any remaining items to a public warehouse at your risk and expense. RESERVES Some lots may carry reserves or minimum selling prices. This is a confidential figure set by the consignor and The Potomack Company below which the item will not be sold. The reserve will always be less than (or equal to) our final low estimate for the lot. The Auctioneer will execute the reserve bid. ESTIMATES All pre-sale estimates of the value of the lots are intended only as guides for potential bidders. Our pre-sale estimates may not be relied upon by anyone as a prediction of the selling price or the fair market value of any lot. The actual selling price may differ greatly from our estimates. All estimates that are provided by us are subject to revision at any time. WITHDRAWAL Items may be withdrawn from sale at anytime prior to the offering of each lot. PAYMENT We accept cash, checks and major credit cards. We reserve the right to hold items that you have purchased until your check clears.
