Describing Properties
The Properties of Potassium Persulfate
Potassium persulfate is the inorganic compound with the formula K2S2O8.
Aqueous solution is acidic. Potassium persulfate is a white crystalline solid. It is
odorless. It is highly soluble in water. The solubility in water has 1.75 g/100 mL at 0 °C
or 4.49 g/100 ml at 20 °C, but it is insoluble in alcohol. The solution in water is a
medium strong acid. If potassium persulfate reacts with chlorite and perchlorate
would produce an explosion hazard. The molecular weight of potassium persulfate is
270.31 g/mol. Potassium persulfate has specific gravity of 2.477 g/l. The melting point
of potassium persulfate is decomposes below 1000C. At 250C, the vapor pressure of
potassium persulfate is 6.07x10-30 mmHg. Degree acidity of potassium persulfat in 1%
solution is 6.4 or <7.0 . Potassium persulfate is strong oxidant, harmful and irritant. It is
not explosive but heating may cause violent combustion or explosion and would
produce toxic fumes.
Potassium persulfate is used inorganic chemistry as an oxidizing agent. As a
strong bleaching agent, it is used in hair dye substances as whitening agent with
hydrogen peroxide. As a strong oxidant of environmental samples, mainly aqueous, for
the determination of the total nitrogenous compounds therein.
