El Niño in full swing With overnight temps above freez- ing — even on the Coq summit — our El Niño winter is in full swing. Overall, a milder winter is expected across the province with fewer episodes of Arctic air compared to what we typi- cally see, and fewer threats of significant snow in coastal areas & interior valleys. Already this month, temperature highs resemble 2011 & 2013 with well- above freezing records (7° to 10°C), com- pared to 2016-2017 lows (-15° to -25°C), La Niña years. Below normal precipitation is antic- ipated across southern BC with fewer storms and more extended periods of dry weather. Meanwhile, the north coast is expected to be wetter than normal. However, the dry pattern will break down at times, allowing for an abun- dance of rain and mountain snow in rel- atively short periods of time. This will allow south coast rainfall totals to ap- proach normal levels despite the overall drier pattern. Environment Canada meteorologists say that, in the shorter term, approach- ing winter solstice on Friday, it looks like temperatures finally start to cool, return- ing to “kind of near seasonal values.” In the longer term, preliminary in- dications point to an earlier arrival of spring weather. On the wealth of BC’s top-10 billionaires According to Statistics Canada’s Sur- vey of Financial Security & Canadian Busi- ness magazine, the typical top-10 BC bil- lionaire is 5,845 times wealthier than the typical BC household. The combined net worth of the 10 wealthiest families in BC is $25 billion. Together, they have the same wealth as the bottom 1.32 million British Columbians combined, more than a quarter of the province’s population. In fact, the typical top-10 BC bil- lionaire is 5,845 times wealthier than the typical (median) BC household. The 10 wealthiest families in BC together held $24.9 billion in net worth. The typi- cal British Columbia family (the “median,” right in the middle of the wealth distribu- tion) has a net worth of $429,400. In contrast, the median of the 10 billionaire families has a net worth of $2.51 billion. Much of BC’s wealthiest families’ wealth is inherited. Seven of the 10 fortunes are now in their second generation or more, which means those billions aren’t solely the result of hard work or earned success. All of the 10 wealthiest BC families have sub- stantial investments in real estate or property development. Several of the families made their primary fortunes in real estate and development, while others only have side investments in this sector. Overall, a milder winter is expected across the province with fewer episodes of Arctic air compared to what we typi-cally see, and fewer threats of significant snow in coastal areas & interior valleys.

Already this month, temperature highs resemble 2011 & 2013 with well-above freezing records (7° to 10°C), com-pared to 2016-2017 lows (-15° to -25°C), La Niña years.

Below normal precipitation is antic-ipated across southern BC with fewer storms and more extended periods of dry weather. Meanwhile, the north coast is expected to be wetter than normal.

However, the dry pattern will break down at times, allowing for an abun-dance of rain and mountain snow in rel-atively short periods of time. This will allow south coast rainfall totals to ap-proach normal levels despite the overall drier pattern.

Environment Canada meteorologists say that, in the shorter term, approach-ing winter solstice on Friday, it looks like temperatures finally start to cool, return-ing to “kind of near seasonal values.”

In the longer term, preliminary in-dications point to an earlier arrival of spring weather.
