EDUCATION

Jumbling or juggling? It speaks volumes of governmental laxity in ensuring proper facilities in colleges. Some 60per cent of 4,800 intermediate colleges have no proper laboratories

Jumbling means students haveto go to colleges other thantheir own for practical exams.

Last year, the practical tests wereheld in the same colleges for theirstudents where a lot of malprac-tices were reported. Some students who didnot attend the practical also gotcent percent marks.

Jumbling will make thingsdifficult for students but the qual-ity of education will improve, educationists say.

Postnoon [email protected]

Four high-profile passengers whoarrived from London via Dubai

Sons of a Cabinet minister, aCongress MLA and the brother ofanother Congress MLA were amongthose picked up by the DRI officials. They were allegedly in possession ofalcohol and watches worth `50 lakh, according to sources. However, it wasyet to be confirmed whether theywere carrying them beyond permissi-ble limits, and whether they were‘smuggling’ goods into the country.

Official sources said that thefoursome were trying to take out thegoods they brought without payingthe tax. Sources indicated that theytried to exit through the green chan-nel. The DRI is yet to evaluate thecost of the material seized. Thoughreports suggested that CongressMLA from Vikarabad Prasad Babu isalso among those picked by the DRI,he condemned the reports.

Why MiyapurWhen asked why they chose Miyapur as home, thecommon answer that denizens gave was its closeproximity to Hitech City. “My husband, DhananjayKumar, works in Hitech City and we wanted to rentan apartment that was closest to office. Being on abudget, renting an apartment in Madhapur wasexpensive,” says Seema Kumar, a homemaker whomoved into Miyapur two years ago. “Every morn-ing, I can take in fresh and less polluted air whichis a privilege living in Hyderabad. My apartmentfaces a lake which not many areas can boastabout,” says C Manorama, a teacher whose hus-band also works in Hitech City.

Rental and Property RatesProperty in Miyapurranges from `20 lakhsto `30 lakhs for a twobedroom apartment, making it a favourableand viable option forfirst-time buyers. Roadfacing properties candemand a price upto

`50,000 a square yard, says real estate agent,Nageshwar Rao. “The rents range from `7,000 fora two-bedroom unit to `10,000 and `15,000 for3BHK,” says Venkat Reddy, a resident and real-estate agent. “One of the main reasons why wechose Miyapur is because it is still affordabledespite being a developed area,” he says.

Schools and HospitalsThere are nine yellow-page listed hospitals andclinics in the area, andmore coming up. Forresidents, hospitals arealways in close proximi-ty. “In case of an emer-gency, there are manyhospitals at hand.Senior citizens can buya retirement home herefor the same reason,” says Rajeshwar Rao, whohas been living in the area for the last six years.“There are at least 50 schools in Miyapur. What’sbetter is that there are both regular schools andthe high end ones and quality of education is out-standing in all of them,” says Nageshwar Rao.

SecurityAdequate securityholds priority for pros -pective buyers and ten-ants. Real estate agentVenkat Reddy who hasbeen living here for 25years, claims that thepolice patrol the areatwice daily. “I have never felt unsafe here,” headds. “Apart from having internal security, thepolice always keeps a watch,” says Manorama.

ConnectivityDespite being consid-ered 'outskirts', Miyapuris well connec ted by allmodes of pu blic trans-port. The closest railwaystation, Haf eezpet, isthree kilometres awayfrom Miyap ur cross-roads. “As soon as I step outside my apartment, Ican easily hire an autorickshaw,” says Seema. “Abus stop is walking distance from home. It is

extremely well connected, except when you haveto go to areas beyond Hitech City where it can bea long ride,” says Nageshwar.

Water and ElectricityDenizens are content as they have never had toface any major power or water shortage. They saythe entire area is blessed to have 24 hours watersupply. “I have beenliving here for six yearsand have never facedany problems. Butwhen I was living inHimayat Nagar, waterwas a scarce resourcethere,” says Rajeshwar.

Do you like it here?“I have been living here for 25 years and haveseen the best and worst phase. The area hasgrown tremendously. It is a great area and I wouldnever want to move out,” says Venkat. “Havinglived in KPHB, Miyapur is better. It has betterroads, lung space as well as very good restaurantsand shops,” concludes Seema.

Miffed over the delay in releasingfunds, contractors employed bythe State government for the

Jalayagnam project have decided to seeklegal remedy and stall work connectedwith the project till they are served jus-tice. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the AndhraPradesh unit of the Builders’ Associationof India (BAI).

The works have already been stalledsince January 10. President of theBuilders Association P Mohan Reddy toldPostnoon that the decision to stop workwas taken as a last resort.

Earlier, minister for IT PonnalaLakshmiah had assured the contractorsthat the government would releasefunds. Members of BAI had met minis-ter for major irrigation SudershanReddy over the issue, but nothing hashappened yet.

Contractors have demanded thatChief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddyshould assure them.

But Kiran Kumar Reddy is busy on hisDelhi trip and with other political devel-opments. It is learnt that he had alreadyassigned two of his cabinet colleagues totalk to the contractors, but the impasse isexpected to continue.

Of the 86 irrigation and power worksproposed under Jalayagnam, only 12have been completed. The rest was being

done at a snail’s pace.About 10 lakh workers are said to be

directly involved in the works.Builders say that the initial plan was

to complete 88 works at an estimatedcost of `46,000 crore. But more projectswere included and the allocation offunds too rose to `1.16 lakh crore in2008. The government has only releasedabout `35,000 crore.

Builders say another `1.67 lakhcrore is required to complete the pro-posed works.

The contractors had also soughtmore funds as was decided duringthe YSR regime. They cited rising costof labour, cement, steel and sand asthe reason.

The contractors have indicated thatthe prices which were agreed upon earli-er might go up by three times if payments are not made as promised ear-lier. It is said the matter was brought tothe notice of the chief minister.

Sailu Nath and Rajinikanth, both handicapped, travel morethan 10 kilometers everyday on

their wheelchair to find odd jobsleaving them with no option but tobeg for alms. Despite the pain andtrouble they undergo they swearnot to use the public transport.

“Travelling by bus is a night-mare. We have seen normal peoplestruggle so much that we don’t dareenter a bus or train. Secondly, it’snot convenient for us, we take timeto get in and the drivers do nothave the time or patience to help usor wait. We are happy using thissmall vehicle of ours,” saidRajinikanth, a physically handi-capped citizen from Yousufguda,

pointing to his wheelchair. As a City we might be friendly to

expatriates and foreigners, however, looking deep within, we are notreally friendly towards citizens withdisabilities. Commuting by publictransport is a challenging task forthese people.

APSRTC buses have certain pro-visions like special seats and con-cessions for the physically chal-lenged but unfortunately the stepsof these buses are so high thatboarding these buses is quite a chal-lenge. However, keeping senior citi-zens and the physically challengedcitizens in mind, the Hyder abadpublic transport has introduced lowlevel buses. But the problem is thatthese are always too crowded.

“Hyderabad is a well equippedCity with the best facilities for ahandicapped person. Now, the gov-ernment has started to build lowlevel buses keeping special citizens

in mind. The situation at railwaystations is also better. There arespecial ramps and wheelchair facil-ities available. The situation hashowever improved in the last 10years. However, the irony is notmany are aware of these facilities. The government has provided sev-eral facilities but there is nowawareness,” said S Narsima Rao, co-ordinator, Sweekar Upkar.

Despite these facilities beinginstalled at railway stations theyare not well maintained. What’sworse, not all stations are equippedwith these facilities. City railwaystations do not even have a specialenquiry desk and sign boards forhandicapped citizens. WhenPostnoon visited Begumpet railwaystation, there was only onewheelchair that too without anattender. The Footover Bridge hadonly stairs and no ramp.

However, the station master,

Sharma, got defensive and said,“The disabled should find outwhich platform their train will bestopping at. They can’t ex p e ct us todrop them to their point of board-ing. They know they are disabled sothey should be well infor med andplan things in advance.”

Not only is commuting a prob-lem but the physically challengedare facing several problems fromthe government. They need to gettheir status renewed once a yearwhich is creating problems forthem and their family.

“Once a person is certifiedphysically challenged it’s supposedto be for life. However, the govern-ment expects them to get a newcertificate every year. There is noneed for that, it’s a huge problemfor my students. Politicians need totake special interest towards thiscause and do something about it,”said S Narsima Rao.

THE FACES OF HYDERABADB Narayana, Chudva vendor, Secretariat

Every Hyderabadi has at some point of timespent a leisurely evening strolling at one ofthe many parks or along Tank Bund

munching on some Chudva palli. Be it a teenageror a senior citizen, this spicy snack is a hotfavourite and B Narayana who has his stall oppo-site the Secretariat sells some of the best.

Balancing his wares ina basket perched on awooden stand, Narayanadishes out some lip-smacking chudva pallisprinkled generously withlime, onion and spices.

Originally a farmer,Narayana came to the Cityto eke out a living after hisattempts at agriculturefailed. He stays near LICcolony and has three sonsand a daughter.

On an average, Narayana makes around `250a day, which although meagre, is Narayana’s hardearned money. On days when there are dharnasat NTR stadium, business is good for this vendorwho rakes in as much as `500 a day on such occa-sions. On the whole, Narayana has no complaintsas he says business is good since he is strategical-ly located. If god willing he would want to returnto Warangal, his hometown.

On Day 2 of the LiteraryFestival at TaramatiBaradari, Hyderabad'stryst with arts and cul-

ture continued with regional, national and international writ-ers converging to either discusstheir works or to throw light onthe importance of greateracceptance of Indian languages

and literature. On one hand, Saeed Mirza,

renowned filmmaker andscreen writer, was deep in con-versation with IndragantiMohana Krishna and T VijayKumar, who is one of the found-ing editors of Muse India andalso a professor of English andjoint director at OsmaniaUniversity Centre forInternational Programmes(OUCIP), while on the other

hand, Angshuman Kar, AmritaNair, Semeen Ali who alongwith Anindita Sengupta wasnominated for the Muse IndiaYoung Writer Award 2011, readout excerpts of their poetry.

Eminent poet, newspapereditor and columnist, AdilJussawalla also graced the occa-sion. In conversation withHyderabad-based writer, SridalaSwami, Jussawalla discussed thedissatisfaction of various writ-

ers with their work. He said, “Ihave tried to destroy my workbecause either I was not satis-fied with it or it didn't really sayanything about me as a poet, trying to communicate mydeeper feelings with the world.”

“I am not the first. Kafkaand Tolstoy too, tried to destroytheir work,” he continued, going on to add that in Indiathere is no sense of archivingthe work of writers. “Even news-

papers fail to do that,” he said.Jussawalla’s poems are con-

sidered to be often complex, fragmented, non-linear andironic, evoking the dehuman-ised and spiritually sterile land-scape, which is suspended in a perpetual state of catastro-phe, but the short poem herecited based on his mother'sconvalescence, was over in ablink, strung rhythmically withsimple words.

The youngest and first non-Englishperson to win the HawthorndenPrize for his debut collection in

1958 was Dom Moraes, who said, “Myagent tells me that I have a name.” As theaudience waits, he says, “for what I say.”An excerpt that he recited from a collec-tion of poetry titled John Nobody. Thatwas when the poets of his time did havean audience. Not a very compact oneperhaps, or a number close to a house-full, it was an audience nonetheless.

As obscurity shadowed and thrustitself on a number of other poets likeEzekiel, who was described as the ‘Fatherof post-independence Indian verse inEnglish’, it became quite evident thatpoets writing in English no longer en -joyed the kind of attention, albeit limitedthey once did. Dr Sukrita Paul Kumar, who is a scholar, critic and a poet of greatsensitivity, disagrees rather vehemently, when asked. “To say that we don’t havepoets writing in English is wrong,” shesays, “To say that poetry in general is notbeing given enough attention, is right.”

Dr Kumar believes that the audienceis deaf to poets in general. “The audienceis not really all that open to experiment-ing. Resourceful material as well as the

right kind of academics in order toimpart knowledge of poetry to today’sgeneration is absent,” she says.

A lot more poets in English are get-ting the much-needed attention and arealso publishing with greater alacrity, asmediums like poetry festivals, and theblogosphere seem to generate more de -bates, discussions and required publicity.

Why is it that we are masters in proseand bummers in poetry? A lot of peoplelink fatigue and boredom, when theyhear the words ‘poetry reading’ but asone of the founding editors of MuseIndia, Vijay Kumar, points out, “We arejust two years old and the turnout thisyear has been better than the last. Poetry, too, needs dialogue to be conveyed to thepeople. It is still in the making as ours is arich multilingual culture.”

Poet, newspaper editor and colum-nist, Adil Jussawalla admits that while hehas been a published literary, the accep-tance is low. “Everyone has a view as tohow a poem should be like,” he says, going on to add a few points regarding theabsence of a tradition of criticism, “Whatis the point if poets didn’t write or criticiseeach other. Some of the more in telligent, nuanced, objective and contextualisedcriticism is written by poets themselves, like the Acme poets of Russia, and that isvital, but I wish there was more of it. Weneed to have indigenous criticism feedingoff literature and literature feeding of crit-icism,” he opined. We agree.

Nissim Ezekiel and Dom Moraes epitomised modern Indian poetrybut since Ezekiel’s passing nine years ago on January 4, 2004, thestate of Indian poetry in English brings forth some mixed opinions

CHARLESTON: RepublicanWh i te House hopeful Mitt Rom -ney drew fierce Democratic fireon Tuesday over his tax bill, partof a plan to paint the multi-mil-lionaire as out of touch withmiddle America.

The former Massachusettsgovernor, who could seal up hisparty’s nomination with a con-vincing win in South Carolina’sprimary on Saturday, bowed tomounting political pressureand said he would release his2011 tax filings come April.

And Romney, thought to beworth between $190-250 mil-lion, said he pays an effectivetax rate of about 15 percent, which would be in line with taxlaws that President BarackObama has denounced as lopsidedly favouring the rich.

“What’s the effective rateI’ve been paying? It’s probablycloser to the 15 percent ratethan anything,” the Republican, who touts his business acumenas his top asset, told reportersafter a rally in Florence, SouthCarolina.

Romney noted that his rateis lower than the highest taxbracket on wage income, 35

percent, because his money“comes overwhelmingly frominvestments made in the past”and benefits from a tax codemeant to encourage invest-ments.

In a rare campaign-relatedsalvo from the White House, spokesman Jay Carney saidRomney’s disclosure “illumi-nates” an ongoing debate aboutwidening US income inequalityand that Obama thinks the richmust “pay their fair share.”

Obama, whose 2010 returnsshowed he paid an effective taxrate of 26 percent, “believes thatwe ought to change the law” sothat “everybody... gets a fairshot at the American dream,”Carney told reporters.

Carney stopped short ofcalling on Romney to publishhis tax returns, but pointed outthat leading past candidates, including then-senator Obama, had revealed their personalfinancial records — and not justone year’s worth.

Carney also noted thatGeorge W Bush, Bill Clinton andnominees for each party foryears had provided the information AFP

other board members may alsostep down soon, includingchairman Roy Bostock.

In a letter to Bostock, Yang, who held the title of “ChiefYahoo!,” said “my time atYahoo!, from its founding to thepresent, has encompassedsome of the most exciting andrewarding experiences of mylife. However, the time has comefor me to pursue other interestsoutside of Yahoo!

“I am enthusiastic about theappointment of Scott Thom ps -on as Chief Executive Officer andhis ability, along with the entireYahoo! leadership team, to guideYahoo! into an exciting and suc-cessful future,” Yang said.

Yang co-founded Yahoo! in1995 with David Filo and thecompany went public the fol-lowing year.

Yang served as chief execu-tive of Yahoo! from June 2007 toJanuary 2009, during whichtime he notably turned down a$47 billion takeover bid fromMicrosoft, earning the ire ofmany shareholders.

“Jerry has great confidencein the future of Yahoo!, and Ishare his confidence in the eno -rmous potential of Yahoo! in thedays ahead,” Thompson said.

Since Bartz’s departure inSeptember, Yahoo!’s board hasreportedly been looking at sell-ing all or part of the companyand Yang was seen as a fierceopponent of a breakup by someshareholders.

HYDERABAD: City-basedInternational Institute ofInformation Technology (IIIT) isset to develop a mobile technologythat would accept speech as inputand convert it into language andtext, which can be sent as an SMS,a top functionary of IIIT said.

According to Rajeev Sangal,Director of IIIT, the project, whichhas been funded by the Ministry ofInformation Technology, will beready in the next two years.

“You can talk to the mobilephone. Suppose, anybody doesnot know reading or writing, theycan dictate the phone the SMS,which they would like to send. They should be able to speak it outand then the phone will convert itinto text and send it as a message,”Sangal told PTI.

According to him, seven otherinstitutions are currently workingon this project. Sangal said, the

technology will be useful inmobile phones, which have small-er screens and keyboard, making itdifficult to type letters.

The speech lab of the IIIT aimsto develop robust speech systemsfor applications, such as speechtranslation, phonetic engine forIndian languages, speaker recog-nition for biometrics, and dialogsystems in speech mode, a seniorfaculty member said.

Speaking about other projectscurrently the institute is workingupon, Sangal said, the researchteams are also engaged in devel-oping an optical character readerfor mobile phones.

“The optical character readerwill read whatever is written onthe screen with the help of a hand-writing recognition tool. We canwrite the instructions in anyIndian languages on a mobilephone, using a stylus. The text willbe recognised by the cell-phoneand action can be taken accord-ingly,” the academician explained.

The institute has also devel-oped a software for an interna-tional mobile maker that wouldread out the SMSs in Hindi, Sangalsaid, without naming the mobilemaker’s name. According to ana-lysts, this technology is useful toexpand in to rural Indian marketswhere mobile penetration is still inthe nascent stage due to higherlevels of illiteracy. Last year, formerPresident Dr APJ Abdul Kalamlaunched machine translation(MT) systems, which facilitatesweb-based language translation, developed by IIIT along with 16other institutions. PTI

Whatthe students’ leader saidabout the media ignoringthem when a platform isorganised to discuss the sepa-rate statehood is true. He isalso correct when he says politi-cians have upstaged them. LET THE ARMY CHIEF êÉíáêÉ=ïáíÜ=ÇáÖåáíó

The Central government ispreparing for a high-pro-file legal battle with the

army chief at the apex courtover the latter’s date of birth.Gen VK Singh is adamant on

getting the date corrected to hisversion. Gen Singh has said thathe will step down on the sched-

uled day fixed as per the gov-ernment records but will not

budge on his demand for rectifi-cation of government records. If

he backs down, it will implythat he tried to fudge records to

ensure a longer tenure at thehelm. So it is natural that he

considers any backtracking orcompromise a dishonour —

something no soldier willaccept. The image of the armed

forces has taken a beating inthe last few years due to mas-

sive scams and sacking of high-ranking officials. Since Gen

Singh doesn’t want anythingother than his honour and cred-

ibility acknowledged, the gov-ernment should show some

gratitude to the man who headsthe army and let him retire with

his honour and dignity intact.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 201213Holistic view of mind, body and soulH‑FactorLa Nina maytrigger flupandemics:StudyWASHINGTON: Influenzapandemics that caused deathand illness worldwide in the pastwere preceded by La Nina condi-tions in the equatorial Pacific, astudy has found.

The study examined weatherpatterns during the devastating flupandemics in 1918, 1957, 1968 and2009, Xinhua reported.

The La Nina pattern is knownto alter the migratory patterns ofbirds, which are thought to be aprimary reservoir of humaninfluenza. Experts theorise thataltered migration patterns promotethe development of dangerous newstrains of influenza.

To examine the relationshipbetween weather patterns andinfluenza pandemics, theresearchers studied records ofocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific before the fourmost recent flu pandemicsemerged.

They found that all four pandemics were precededby below-normal sea surfacetemperatures consistent with theLa Nina phase.

The findings were publishedonline Monday in the Proceedingsof the National Academy of Science.

The authors cite other researchshowing that the La Nina patternalters the migration, stopover time, fitness and inter-species mixing ofmigratory birds. Every life story has itsgood and bad, but thereare some that in the truespirit show persistence,

practicality, dedication andmost importantly standing bythose you care for no matterwhat the situation. Such a storyis that of Shah Jehan Khan andher husband Asad Ali Khan.Asad Ali Khan can be describedas one of those intelligent mindsthat have helped us developwith his many contributions.Talking about his active days, hiswife Shah Jehan Khan, a doctorherself, proudly recounts, “Asadhas been a scientist at theIndian Institute of ChemicalTechnology. A very active andwell travelled man who has pub-lished nearly 80 papers andworked with many PhD stu-dents. He loved his work, hasbeen an enthusiastic workerwho enjoyed travelling, studyingand research.”

Disease has been man’sbiggest enemy and sometimesthere is no sign or warning of itsonset. When Alzheimer’s struckAsad, it was not easy to come toterms with. Recalling the firsttime she noticed the changes inhim Khan mentions, “Werealised that there was a prob-lem for the first time in the year2004. We were travelling to theUS. As he had not received hisvisa I went ahead and he joined

me a month later. When my sonand I reached the airport to pickhim up it had become slightlylate. We found him sitting on theground with his suitcase openand frantically searching for ourson’s number.” This was just thefirst instance and slowly shestarted to notice that he beganlosing interest in many things. For someone who alwaysenjoyed learning, in the last twomonths he has even stoppedreading the newspapers.

The hardest blow however, for anybody is when a loved onefails to recognise them.“Although he does recognise mebut he goes through phaseswhen he can’t even remembermy name,” she says. For some-body who’s been married somany years, this is definitely noteasy. There have been instanceswhen Asad has answered theirdaughter’s calls, had a perfectlyamiable conversation lastingseveral minutes and then hand-ed the phone to Khan stating hedidn’t know who the person atthe other end of the line was.

For a person who loved trav-elling, these days Asad is reluc-tant to step out of the house andmeet people. “Our son is abroadand daughter is married butdoes visit us often so usually atthe end of the day it’s just thetwo of us. People offer to help bytaking care of him in case I havework, but he is not too keen ongoing out or meeting anyoneanymore.”

But there’s one thing thatAsad still loves to do — go forlong walks. “He is usually verydisturbed in the morning after

taking all those medicines so helikes to take walks. I try to takehim out whenever I can.” Therehave been times though whenAsad wakes up even before thecrack of dawn to go for a walk.

Though much of her time istaken up in caring for her hus-band, Khan doesn’t complain. For her, he is still the man she

loves and respects. “Also I do tryto do things that interest me andhire a helper to care for himwhen I go out for a couple ofhours. For the most part though,I avoid leaving him alone.

It’s still difficult, people saythey try but at the end of the daywe will never know what’s in hismind.”

Desk job is injurious to health Brain re-routes traffic for maximum alertnessLONDON: A British study has said thatpeople in desk jobs could be compromisingwith their health as it often perpetrates a

sedentary lifestyle. According to theresearch, sitting at a desk all day means youare more likely to slump on the sofa athome and perform no exercise. The averageoffice worker spends five hours 41 minutesdaily at their desk, almost as long as theseven hours they spend sleeping, the DailyExpress reported.

These desk bound workers are more likely to turn into couch potatoes, increasingtheir risk of obesity, says the researchers atthe Loughborough University, a research-based campus university in Britain’sLeicestershire county.

The trend is partly blamed on technolo-gy making it simpler for lazy people atoffices to email a colleague rather thanwalking over to see them, it adds. IANS

WASHINGTON: Thebrain re-routes traffic withinitself to maximise alertnessand make the best of ourknowledge.“In order tobehave efficiently, you wantto process relevant sensoryinformation as fast as possible, but relevance isdetermined by your currentsituation,” said Joy Geng, assistant professor of psy-chology at the University ofCalifornia Davis Centre forMind and Brain. For exam-ple, a flashing road signalerts us to traffic mergingahead; or a startled animal

might cue you to look out fora hidden predator. Geng andco-author NicholasDiQuattro, used functionalmagnetic resonance imagingto study brain activity , theJournal of Neurosciencereports. The new work showsthat the brain doesn’t always“ramp up” to deal with thesituation. Instead, it changeshow traffic moves throughthe existing hard-wired network — rather likechanging water flow througha network of pipes or infor-mation flow over a networkto maximise efficiency. IANS

Proteinshows

promise in treating

smoker’sdiseases

WASHINGTON: Chronic ObstructivePulmonary Disease (COPD) caused byexcessive smoking is characterised byblockage or narrowing of airways in thelungs.

Researchers identified the proteinSAA as playing a key role in chronicinflammation and lung damage inCOPD and also in inhibiting the naturaleffort of the lung to repair itself aftersmoking has stopped.

Gary Anderson, professor at theUniversity of Melbourne, said the discovery could help improve lungfunction at any stage of COPD.

“It has the potential to dramaticallyimprove the lives of many people suf-fering these conditions and reduce thehuge burden of health and hospitalcosts associated with their treatment,”he said.

The symptoms are shortness ofbreath, chronic cough, increasedmucus production, wheezing orwhistling sound, chest tightness andfatigue, among others.

Steven Bozinovski, associate profes-sor from Melbourne, who led the study, said the findings were significantbecause SAA was normally made in theliver, but they found that very high lev-els were made in the lungs of COPDpatients. “It was a breakthrough for usto confirm that SAA played such a keyrole in the lung,” he said.

Bruce Levy, associate professor atHarvard, said they found that as theSAA interacted with its receptor, it notonly triggered lung inflammation butalso stopped a natural healingmolecule which helped to turn offinflammation and heal the lung.

“This mechanism appears toexplain one of the reasons that inflam-mation in COPD just never resolvesdespite stopping smoking,” he said.

The discovery could lead to thedevelopment of a dual treatment byfirstly, targeting SAA to switch off itsfunction in the lung and secondly, adding a synthetic form of the naturalhealing agent to boost lung healing.

Clinical development for the synthetic agent is currently underway in the US.

You don’t have to let go of fashionwhen you are pregnant and ourcelebrities know this really well

Taniya [email protected]

Whoever said that you have got to let go of style whenyou are pregnant, needs to take a lesson or twofrom our celebrities. During their

pregnancies, none of these celebrities ever let go of theirstyle quotient and always kept their comfort in mind. Theirhectic schedules notwithstanding, the celeb brigade nevercompromised on their looks. If anything else, they wouldeasily give the others a run for their cosmetic surgeons if nottheir money. Today we bring to you a list of celebs wholooked impeccable even during their pregnancies.

Beyonce Knowles

Lara Dutta Shilpa Shetty

Victoria Beckham We have no doubts that if anyone wereto lead the gang of stylish expectantmums, it has to be the former Spice Girl.Victoria is known for her fashion senseand she demonstrated it at the royalwedding too where she was dressed in anavy blue dress from her VictoriaBeckham Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. It slightly showed off her baby bump andVictoria smartly accessorised it with aPhilip Treacy hat which also added to herheight. If the various pictures of babyHarper is anything to go by, then Victoriais sure rubbing off her fashion sense onto her little one early itself.

Now Shilpa is one fashionista fromBollywood who doesn’t seemed to have

ever made a fashion faux pas and herwinning streak continues even into herheavily pregnant term. Recently, when

Shilpa made her appearance at an eventwith her husband by her side, she lookedethereal in an anarkali suit and the preg-

nant glow just added to her beauty.

The high profile Bachchan bahu attracted more mediaattention than any other when she welcomed Beti B

into the world. During the entire term of her pregnancy, she preferred to remain indoors making

selective public appearances. But when she did,Aishwarya made sure she did it in style. She seemed to

prefer the anarkalis with heavy drapes to keep herbaby bump well-hidden from prying eyes.

Dressed in Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla churidars, theBachchan bahu created a fashion statement.

Lara is one mum-to-be who doesn’t mind making publicappearances, bump or no bump. She has been spotted atalmost of the important events in town including the latestwhere she got to meet none other then talk show hostessOprah Winfrey. But what remained common in all theevents is Lara’s impeccable sense of style. Whether it was ashort number or a long maxi dress of just a gown, Lara car-ried them off with elane, adding her name to the alreadylong list of stylish celebs.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

The singer is a pretty lady with a great curvy figure and sheloves to flaunt it too. The only person who can give tough

competition to Shakira when it to comes to the shaking thehips is perhaps Beyonce but that’s not where it all ends.

Beyonce, who also has a fashion line and recently gave birthto a girl Blue Ivy Carter, remained loyal to fashion during her

term. Never was Beyonce spotted dressed in drab whichmany pregnant ladies tend to do.

Hillary Duff This 24-year-old actor and singer has certainly taken a

cue from the experienced ones and has kept her fashionsense intact. Recently, Hillary was seen with husband

Mike Comrie, dressed in a skinny jeans and red stilettoesdoing shopping around town. With the right accessories,

Hillary seemed to get it right, right from the word go.

We Indians have achalta

hai attitude

Taniya [email protected]

There are a handful of stars fromthe South Indian film industrywho enjoy a pan Indian pres-ence and Shriya Saran is one of

them. Though a North Indian, Shriyahas enjoyed great success in the SouthIndian film industry be it Telugu orTamil. Quiz the pretty lady if the massappeal has helped her and she is quickto agree, “It helps to have a pan Indianimage as people recognise you easilyand connect with you. People speakingdifferent languages connecting with youis by no way an easy feat.” She then goeson to add, “Though I will always remainobliged to the South Indian film indus-try which is my bread and butter. I amhappy that I started my career here andthis is where I have achieved success, Ihave been good, bad and ugly yet peo-ple here have always given me chancesand accepted me.”

While Shriya has played a multitudeof roles in different languages, her nextrelease Rumi Jaffery’s directorial GaliGali Chor Hai has Shriya playing a danceteacher. talking about the film, Shriyasays, “Rumi is an acclaimed writer andhis film is a satire on the corrupt systemwhich is existent in our country current-ly. It’s an intelligent comedy which willmake you come out thinking how youcan stand up and bring about change.”She goes on to add, “It’s not a film aboutthe blame game, rather it concentrateson the power that lies within the hand ofa common man to change things.” It is asimple film based in Bhopal which is a

beautiful city in itself. Going on to share more about the film and herrole in it, Shriya says, “It’s is a well-crafted film which represents theaudience in a particular way. Most of us get lost in our routine lifeand forget the deeper self and things around. In this film, I play therole of a small town girl married to Akshaye who teaches street chil-dren and her favourite character from history is Rani Lakshmi Baibut she is oblivious to the surroundings. It is only towards the endthat she understands what her husband is going through andgets involved in the process of change.”

We wanted to know if Shriya has personally ever experi-enced corruption in real life. “Directly I have never had to faceanyone corrupt so far, thankfully, but yes I have heard peoplehaving to give a bribe here and there to get their work done,”offers Shriya. “We Indians have a chalta hai attitude whichis the main hindrance to change. Even to get a passporthere, we get woven into corruption. It is so subtle that itdoesn’t really hit us that much and we just move on with-out sparing much thought to it or else it will becomehard to survive,” she says.

Shriya was working with a very interesting starcastin the film. Talking about Akshaye Khanna she says,“He is a very intense actor and very hardworking too.He comes prepared to the set and knows exactlywhat he is doing.” But it was Mugdha Godse withwhom Shriya hit it off, “Mugdha is a very goodfriend, she used to always take care of me and weused to chill out together. We even worked outtogether and we had great fun on the sets,”saysShriya.

Shriya Saran, who will be seen in the

upcoming Hindi film Gali Gali Chor Hai, doesn’t mind taking

It’s good to be bad, says PriyankaShe is one of the most sought after

leading ladies in the Hindi film industry, but Priyanka

Chopra prefers characters with greyshades over positive roles. And whynot? Her role of a femme fatale in 7Khoon Maaf has fetched her a presti-gious award.

“I like doing negative roles. I thinkthey are lots of fun. It’s so good beingbad,” said the 29-year-old who baggedthe Screen award for the best actress in

a negative role for 7 Khoon Maaf.Priyanka had earlier donned nega-

tive shades for the 2004 successful filmAitraaz — for her performance in thatfilm also she had won the Filmfareaward for the best performance in anegative role.

The former beauty queen is carefulwhile choosing a role as she feels thatthe character should leave an impact, however, small it is.

“I think the most important thing in

a character is to see that it has a pres-ence. A character should not feel wast-ed or redundant. Even if it is a smallrole, the scenes that you have shouldmake an impact, that is important,”said Priyanka who will be seen playingHrithik’s love interest Kaali inAgneepath releasing on Republic Day.

It appears Lindsay Lohan isn’t the only star-

let in talks to play Elizabeth Taylor.Although the Mean Girls star confirmed

she is still up for the role in the buzz-wor-thy biopic to E! News Sunday night at theWeinstein Company Golden Globes after

party, we’ve learned Lohan has some compe-tition by way of Megan Fox. “I’ve been talk-ing to Lindsay Lohan directly, and with herreps, and have been in conversations with

other actresses, including Megan Fox,”Larry Thompson, the executive producer

of Lifetime’s Liz and Dick, told E! Newsexclusively.

Thompson declined to elaboratefurther on the specifics of the negoti-

ations, but added that being in talkswith more than one actress is not

meant as an affront to the talentinvolved, but rather is simply de

rigueur for projects of this nature.“It’s a very serious selection,”

Thompson continued. “It’slike casting for Hollywood

royalty.” And speaking of seri-

ous, a source tells E!News that while

Lohan is still one ofthe frontrunners

for the role, herprobationstatus is “acomplica-

Perhaps it didn’t look right next toall her other bling? Jessica Biel

was highly bejewelled atSunday’s Golden Globes, but one

notable adornment was missing — theengagement ring from fiancé Justin

Timberlake. The actress, 29, was sport-ing a load of Tiffany & Co. jewellery,

including a stitches diamond ring inplatinum and 18-karat yellow gold

(designed by Jean Schlumberger, worth$25,000), as well as five diamond metro

band rings set in 18-karat yellow gold(worth $1,900 each). But her left ring

finger was bare, with no sign of the cus-tom-designed ring that Timberlake, 30,reportedly proposed with in Montana.

Biel also dazzled with two other notableTiffany pieces—round solitaire dia-

mond stud earrings set in platinum,6.12 karats (worth $243,000), and around diamond daisy opera length

necklace set in platinum (worn downher back and worth $135,000).

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

TO ALI, WITH GLOVE

Eleven-year-old AbdulRahman wakes up at 5in the morning. He thengets ready and goes to

the LB stadium with his fatherand brother Habeeb urRahman. He stretches and runs10 rounds around the LB stadi-um punctuating it with a cou-ple of short breaks. After a ses-sion of body weight exercises,he puts on his boxing glovesand spars for half an hour —sometimes with his brother, sometimes with boxers who aretwice or thrice in size and age.

His inspiration: MohammedAli.

“The Greatest” boxer of alltime turns 70 today. He is not inthe news as he once was for hisquick fists and quicker wit, butthe legend is very much alive, not just inspiring many whodon the glove, but one and allfrom every walk of life.

Young Abdul Rahman hasbeen doing well for himself. Hehas two gold and silver medalsat the state level and a bronzeat a recently ended nationalschool competition at Delhi.“He could have gone on to winthe gold, but the refereeing wasprejudiced and poor. But that’s

okay. He has time,” said Khaleelur Rahman, Abdul Rahman’sfather.

Khaleel, a keen sportsenthusiast, recalls AbdulRahman as a very quick boy.“He was fast at everything —running, playing and at timeswhen he fights with his broth-er.”

Khaleel when young haddreamed of pursuing somesport, but could not. “I haddecided that my boys will beallowed to pursue any interestof theirs and when I saw Maas(Abdul Rahman) and his broth-er had the aptitude in them, I

enrolled them for boxing.”Everyone at the boxing hall

likes Abdul Rahman. OnMonday, at practice, when hisbrother was a little late inputting on his gloves, AbdulRahman was already in the ringsparring with an Army boxer, who had graciously obligedwhen he saw that the boy waswithout a sparring partner. Itwas amusing to watch the Armyman back off and dodge thepersistent attacks of the littleboy jabbing and hooking — notexactly “flying like a butterflyand stinging like a bee”, butmore like Sonic the Hedgehog

when moving and Woody theWoodpecker when punching. And when the senior boxertapped gently on AbdulRahman’s head or cheek, hesurged forth and counteredwith double the zeal.

Getting Abdul Rahman to sitand talk is hard. You smile athim, he returns it in a flash. Youask him something, he quipsand hops off and it takes some-time before he settles down forthe next question. It is needlessto ask him what he wants to be,but when asked he says,“Boxer,” in a tone that sounded,“How obvious!”

Many of the boxers whocome here like Mike Tyson: it isnatural because he was the bestwhen most these guys weregrowing up. When you asksome of the Army boxers, ifthey knew Ali, they say, “Yes”.Have you seen his fights? “No,but we know him from the pic-tures (two — a. Ali glaring downon a floored Sonny Liston; b. Alipunching George Foreman)pasted on the wall here.”

But Abdul Rahman and hisbrother Habeeb ur Rahman likeAli. They have seen videos ofhis fights. What do they likebest of Ali’s style? “His quickslips, blocks and lightning-fastpunches,” the brothers said.Too good an answer from twothat’s so young, but goodenough to ensure the legendlives on.

TRIPOLI: Sofiyan al-Bassarswings his right fist and deliversa blow to the face of his rival, splitting his lower lip and knock-ing him off balance before rush-ing in to try to finish him off.

“Stop! Stop!” yells a stockyman as he pulls the 23-year-oldback.

Bassar and his opponentRamzi Abdulhadi al-Haji are notmembers of rival militias fight-ing on the streets of Tripoli, butthey are among the first enthusi-astic young men to join a newlyopened boxing club in the city.

Boxing, considered as a “sav-age” sport and banned since

1979 by former Libyan leaderMoamer Kadhafi, is making acomeback in the North Africancountry after the strongman’souster and death.

The club, which is still to benamed, operates from whatused to be a regular meetingplace of Kadhafi diehards to dis-cuss the dictator’s “Green Book”,a collection of his political, eco-nomic and social teachings.

“This is our fitting reply tothe dead tyrant. We arerelaunching the sport which welove, but he hated, from one ofhis own places,” the stocky man, coach Dris Ali Mohammed, tellsAFP. “Kadhafi banned boxingbecause he thought it to be asavage sport. But he had noproblems hanging and killingpeople in Abu Slim (prison inTripoli). No wonder he waskilled by our boys,” saysMohammed.

Kadhafi was killed onOctober 20 in a fierce battle athis hometown of Sirte, endingan eight-month conflict againsthis regime which erupted inFebruary last year.

Tens of thousands of youngand old Libyans took up arms tofight his diehards, eventuallyending his 42 years of iron-fistedrule.

while stressing his position atthe helm in one-day cricket isnot in doubt.

“The team won’t miss him asa batsman,” Gavaskar said, reacting to Dhoni’s ban fromthe Adelaide Test. “But as a lead-er he will be missed despite thefact that his record is not good.

“At the moment, I can’t thinkof anyone who is good enoughto take over from Dhoni,”Gavaskar told NDTV.
