round the city: Your guide to the Twin Cities

Though India is often andjustly described as amelting pot of religions, cultures and innumer-

able languages, it might well bedescribed as a land of festivals aswell. And in Hyderabad festivalsare a way of life.

Beautifully decoratedChristmas trees, Santa caps, bags brimming with goodies, colourful bells, ribbons, baubles, candies and many other suchitems that have started comingon shelf in markets joyfullyannounce the arrival ofChristmas cheer in city. Mirthand merriment are in the air forChristians of the city, as theyhave started their annual festivi-ties for Christmas.

Twinkling Christmas trees, stickers of Santa Claus and shim-mering decorations can be seen

across churches and malls in thecity.

The city’s oldest church StMary’s, Secunderabad has

already begun elaborate prepa-rations for the festive season thatinvolve spring cleaning and dec-orating the grand old place of

worhsip. Many events havealready been kicked off at thechurch. Carols and Christmascelebrations for Youth of theparish, Holy Mass followed byCarol singing, midnight mass onChristmas Eve and feast of Maryare some of the events lined upfor this year’s festive season atthe church.

In fact, members of YoungWomen’s Christian Association(YWCA) began their celebrationswell in advance. “We had organ-ised games and cultural activi-ties for our members this year.We began our celebrationsbefore hand as we have holidaysfrom December 22,” said a mem-ber of the association.

United ChristmasCommittee of Hyderabad alsobegan celebrations on Monday.Chief Minister, Nallari KiranKumar Reddy graced the cele-brations. St Francis High School,Mahendra Hills staged a play

depicting the birth of JesusChrist.

“As a Christmas traditionevery year we light small oillamps as Christmas decorationsand fill our homes with red flow-ers. Exchanging of gifts amongfamily members and charity tothe poor people is a part of ourcelebration. We place clay lampson the rooftops and walls of ourhomes during Christmas, justlike the Hindus do while cele-brating Diwali,” said BinoyJacob.

The churches, whetherCatholic or Protestant, seem tohave turned into instant pilgrimcentres, with devotees flockingthem in a steady flow for specialprayers and sermons. The pre-Christmas celebration across thecity is only a beginning of a longparty season and family gather-ings. It is time to welcome richplum cakes, soft buttery cookies, gifts and happy songs.

“The Excise department is cent-percent corrupt while the police are40 per cent,” declared D Venkates -

hwara Rao, general secretary of AP StateWine Dealers Association.

Talking to Postnoon in an exclusiveinterview from a low-profile shop inChikkadpally, Venkateshwar Rao said, it isthe lopsided policy of the governmentwhich has spoiled the business.

This the first time that the sellers’ repre-sentative has talked openly on the intrica-cies of wine business after the issue of bribebroke in the open.

What is your take on the liquor scam? The ACB has raided some excise officials

where they got some slips. The slips con-tained details of the bribes paid inKarimnagar and Visakhapatnam. They con-ducted several searches and lots of recordswere found. ACB raids were conducted in Hyderabadalso

Yes, Some names of local parties werefound in the records. There is nothing newabout it. Many politicians are directly orindirectly doing this business.

Earlier, TDP leader Devendar Goud wasalso in this business. What about the politicians involved in thisbusiness ?

Yes, I know people take the names ofministers Mukesh, Nagendar and formerminister T Srinivas Yadav. But let me tell youthey are not at all involved.

Even I approached them several times tobail us out of some petty cases. But they didnot bother to help us.

Let a proper probe bring the truth out.Minister Botsa agreed his relatives are in thebusiness.

But why do liquor shops not respect theMRP?

They cannot sell at Maximum RetailPrice because they can’t survive. A shopworth about `15 lakh at the most is auc-tioned for `5 crore.

How will he survive? There is no alterna-tive but sell at higher prices. It is encouragedby the government indirectly.

What about syndicates? It is to escape from the clutches and

pressures of the police and excise. A localleader is chosen, all the shops come underone umbrella and pay the uniform bribe tothe police and excise officials, and someamount to the ‘godfather’. This is to avoidpolice and excise from making hugedemands. Syndicates are for selling abovethe MRP and paying uniform bribes.Syndicates are formed by different shops inthat area to negotiate with the officials. What will the Association do?

We negotiate to keep the sellers off ofpetty cases like parking, night hours, smalloffences, wrongly booked cases. There areinstances where some wine shops andbiriyani joints were closed as a major por-tion of the earnings were going to the beatofficials. Here comes our lobbying ability. What is the way out?

Government must come up with a uni-form policy to all the shops. No auctioning.

More shops must come up so that there isno demand for that shop or this shop. Thenprices will be at MRP. Why this clamour for liquor business?

When YSR was in power, land was thebusiness, VAT and registration were themain incomes. Liquor was also there but notof this priority. Now land business is gone,so government is milking the excise. That isthe real scenario. Out of `100 of this busi-ness `87 goes to the government, theremainder for the sellers. How can we paycrores and survive on just 13 per cent?Who is at fault?

The government. Why such greed? Whysuch high targets. Shops costing lakhs soldfor crores. Finally, consumers and sellers arefacing hardships. Your suggestion to Government…

Come up with a uniform price and poli-cy. Increase the number of shops. Raise themargin of retailers. All shops should have auniform price. Force to sell on MRP.

AP Wine Association leader DVenkateshwara Rao

Telugu devotees of LordAyyappa formed the secondlargest linguistic group after

Tamils. This was admitted by theKerala government itself and it hasrewarded the devotees from APwith a plot in Sabarimala for thecomforts of Ayyappa devotees.

It is also well known that mostdevotees from AP visit theSabrimala shrine in the first half ofJanuary when the famousMakaravilakku (Makara jyoti) isseen marking the conclusion ofthe two-month-long pilgrimage.

This year however, the trendseems to be changing with mostdevotees opting to visit the shrinemuch before the Makaravilakkucan be spotted. The reason —2011’s tragic incident where 102devotees were crushed to death in astampede. Devotees this year arehesitant to take a risk of this statureand would rather complete theirpilgrimage well in advance.

“It’s not lack of faith in MakaraJyoti,” they all agreed, “if anything,

it is the lack of faith in the humanadministration.”

For instance, the stampedewas totally avoidable. The onlyreason it happened was becauseafter the Makara Jyothi sightingwhen the devotees arrived toPullumedu to take taxis for theirreturn journey, some greedy cab-bies hassled with devotees formore money. During the argu-ment a driver lost control and the

vehicle ploughed into the crowdsleading to a panic.

“I had already finished my pil-grimage to Sabarimala in October. There are many other devoteeswho have done the same. The rea-son is fear of last season’s stam-pede,” said S Kamesh, a devotee.

ArrangementsBut devotees returning from

their pilgrimage this year claim

that security arrangements aremuch better this time round.Several hundred policemen inplainclothes have been pressedinto service. Besides, a new foot-path, bridge and a slew of othermeasures have been taken todecongest the route.

A special batch of police per-sonnel have been deployed inSannidhanam for security andcrowd control.

Online bookingEvery year, Shiva Kumar used

to spend a minimum of four to fivehours in the queue to enter thesanctum sanctorum of the

Sabarimala temple. But this year, ittook him just 20 minutes thanks toa new Q-coupon booking facility. Those who register online neednot wait in the regular queue atValiya Nadappandal.

Makaravilakku DayThe movement of devotees

will be restricted during MandalaMakaravilakku day. Devotees willbe stopped at Pampa from movingto Sabarimala to reduce rush.

Vehicle MovementThe vehicles coming to the

temple are allowed to park at theAttukal temple ground, worldmarket ground, Homeo collegeground and at Injakal.

Tips from devoteesn Opt for online booking for

darshan tickets.n Travel light.n Travel in small groups.n Trains are more comfortable

than cars for travel. Coachescan be booked in advance andthere are several KSRTC busesavailable from the station.

Mangalhat in Nampallyseems to be emerging asthe treasure chest of her-

itage structures. Mangalhat maybe a really old area where Hindusand Muslims reside in equalnumbers but is still known forhaving communal tensions. Yetthe area is blessed with a gooddose of historical structures andheritage.

Ask anyone in Old City orHyderabad where Ghode KiKhabar is and they will be readywith the address — opposite Pan

Mandi, Mangalhat. But ask themwhat they know about the placeand you will draw a blank.

Chances are that you mightget a few Smart Alec answers likea grave for a horse and even a vastmajority of the people residing orhaving shops around it are quiteclueless. It takes quite a bit ofeffort and asking around to actu-ally know the history behindGhode ki Khabar.

There are a lot of untrue sto-ries floating around about thisgrave with a horse statue sittingon it. But few people know thatwhat has become a very impor-tant and famous milestone today

was originally built by OsmanBin Salem more than a hundredyears ago. He lost his belovedhorse and in its memory buried itand built a mazaar around it andconstructed a horse statue on it.

Says Mehmooda Begum, oneof the last living successors ofOsman Bin Salem, “I have seenthis khabar since I was veryyoung and it has been theremuch before me. Occasionally,we see people come to pray hereand visit the khabar.” Few devo-tees come and paint it periodical-ly and maintain the place.Originally the horse was plainwhite in colour but through the

years people have painted itcolourfully. The stories about thehistory of the place also believedby people are that the horsebelonged to a saint or the horseitself was a saint.

A mazaar of a horse is veryrare and is hardly seen anywhereelse in the country. ButHyderabad being one of the oldest cities has a rich culturalpast and history to throw outinteresting gems like Ghode kiKhabar.

Fear of stampede hounds devoteesAP devotees, who usually throng the Sabrimala shrine in January hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous MakaraJyothi, have this time completed their pilgrimage well in advance to avoid the risk of any untoward incidents

A treasure trove of memories

A unique pilgrim centreSabarimala is the largest ann -

ual pilgrim destination in theworld with an estimated 30 mil-lion devotees visiting every year.In 2008 one million devoteeswitnessed the Makarajyoti, according to an answer in theKerala Assembly.

Vaastu change TDP chiefChandrababu Naidu madeto his office on the sugges-

tion of his relative and film starBalakrishna seems working at last,or so the leaders and cadresbelieve. The current power strug-gle in the Congress, the TRS chal-lenge and disqualification issue istopped by the liquor scam thatthreatens to open a Pandora’s Boxand Babu has already alerted thecadres to get ready for a great elec-toral war.

“Sani” (Saturn) has grippedthe Congress and the TDP is freefrom its grip is the common belief. The TDP is only praying for thequick decision on the 16 CongressMLAs who voted for no-confi-dence motion.

The TDP office has begunsending SMSes to the cadres. Babuhas advised the leaders to createawareness among the public thatthere was nothing left with theCongress to develop the State and

public in general and it’s time thatthey voted for the TDP. He wantedthe TDP leaders to enthuse wom-enfolk against the liquor and itssales in the State. No one shouldpurchase the liquor over andabove the MRP, he directed thecadres. The sentiment of women-folk against the liquor should bemoulded for the TDP candidates,he directed.

The TDP has chalked out astrategy to strengthen the partyfrom grassroots level, and gear upfor the coming local body elec-

tions apart from the by-elections.The TDP is also awaitingfor the Speaker’s decision on thedisqualification issue. As the firststep in that direction, the TDP pre-pared a schedule to conduct themeetings at every mandal. Babuhas finished a first round of talk viavideo conference with cadres.

Talking to Postnoon, some ofthe party leaders said that thecadre needs to be enthused andmotivated to re-establish its con-tact with a cross-section of people, more particularly farmers andwomen. In fact, some of the cadresitself had lost touch with the party.Though committees were formedup to booth level, still the contactshave to be developed keeping intouch with them on daily basisthey opined.

The TDP has asked the localleaders to identify the problems, and draw up plans for protests anddharnas . This apart, it wanted thecadres to highlight the issues likeprice rise, crop loans, scarcity ofseeds and fertilisers, and delay inrelease of scholarships.

Police officials are a worried lotthese days. Apart from drawingflak for the rising crime rate in

the twin cities, their reputation hastaken a severe beating with incidentsof policemen being involved incrimes. Recently, a cop was chargedwith raping a minor and another forabetting the crime.

Ugly faces of the law enforcers’behind such crimes are no differentfrom those of commonplace crimi-nals. Such events may seem sporadicbut they don’t fail to rattle the City.

Despite all this, officials in the topechelons of the police departmentare quick to promise that justice willbe done. “Everyone is equal beforelaw, and that includes the police,”said Cyberabad police commissionerDwaraka Tirumala Rao. “Errantpolicemen shall not be exempted.Such officials will be dealt with strin-gently. Apart from registering a caseand arresting the accused, we alsotake departmental action againsthim. People needn’t worry about it,”he assured.

There are three types of disci-plinary actions. The first type ofaction is initiated against those whoare involved in a grave crime and itattracts major penalty proceedings. The punishment may even go up todismissal from the department (oncedismissed he won’t be considered forgovernment jobs).

The second type of disciplinaryaction comprises minor penalty pro-ceedings against officials whoseoffences are not criminal, but arepunishable. Such officials are sus-pended (he may be reinstated intothe service, or he may join other gov-

ernment department). The punishment for the third

type of offence is minimal. For insub-ordination and lack of punctuality, demotions, delay in promotions andassigning extra work are the norm.

“There is no need for the generalpublic to be worried about recentincidents. We are doing our best tokeep a check on our system. In most

of the cases we are initiating inquiriesand are arresting the accused. In fact,no other department in AP has takendisciplinary action against their offi-cers like we have,” said Tirumala Rao.

“A study conducted about theerrant behaviour of our policemenreveals stress to be the main cause,”he revealed. “Some of our men areunable to cope with the extremestress and hence indulge in suchactivities. Even on normal days whenthere are no agitation the stress levelsare high. Hence we have conductedworkshops on stress management.”

Hyderabad City policeCommissioner AK Khan is of theopinion that errant cops should bepunished severely. “The policedepartment’s very aim is to protectlaw and order,” he said. “We are giventhe responsibility of protecting lives, safeguarding values, dignity, libertyand moral rights. If a person who isgiven this responsibility plays com-mits an offence then he should beseverely punished. It’s like ‘A dirty

broom can’t clean a room’. We are trying our best to trace them our-selves, but we request the generalpublic to report any such grievancesor problems to the control room or toofficials.”

Postnoon reporter OsamaSalman visited BM Birla ScienceMuseum and noticed short-

comings in India’s premier sciencecentre. However, the director of themuseum Dr BG Sidharth defends itand is adamant that the sciencemuseum has over the years beenmaintained and is still the best.n Has the museum witnessed

fewer visitors over the years? The Birla science museum is as

strong as it was earlier. In fact, onlean days, 1000 people visit us and onheavy days, the number rises to 1500to 2000. This number speaks foritself. We are the best science muse-um in the country and recently vis-iting team from IEEE was impressedwith the facilities we offer.n Some equipments are not work-

ing while others are worn out.Do you think it needs a face-lift?

In any science museum in the coun-try, 70 per cent of the equipmentdoesn’t work. Many people havecomplained that in museums ofBengaluru and Kolkata, they comeback disappointed due to this. But inour museum, the ratio is reverse. 70per cent of the equipment is working. We are in the process of repairingequipment. As far as face-lift is con-cerned, we don’t see the need. We areconstantly introducing new exhibits.n The museum is dusty and stuffy.

The lighting is poor too. We get the museum cleaned every

day. The day you vis-ited was probably one of the fewdays when it wasn’t cleaned proper-ly. We use CFL and LED lights to beecological.n Visitors say the staff does not

explain the exhibits to them. The very idea of the museum is to

self-learn. Visitorsneed to explore the concepts of

science, ask questions and discoveranswers.n Is there a new wing in the

pipeline?Yes, we are going to inaugurate a hi-tech and state of the art wing byJanuary. It is an electronics andspace simulator wing and is thebest in India.

‘Liars, stop the violence’demand Egyptian women Hundreds of women have

taken to the streets ofCairo to protest against

military rule and the brutaltreatment of female protestersby Egypt’s security services.

The women rallied outsidea government office complexin Tahrir Square, the scene ofviolent clashes earlier onTuesday in which at least fourdemonstrators were shot deadby military police.

Dozens of men joined thedemonstration out of sympa-thy with the women. Theyacted as a protective cordonand chanted: “Egyptianwomen are a red line.”

The protest came after sol-diers made another violentattempt to evict demonstratorscamped in the square, duringthe fifth day of bloody con-frontation between the militaryand opponents of army rule.

It also followed condemna-tion of the treatment of femaleactivists in Egypt by HillaryClinton. The US secretary ofstate said she was appalled bythe treatment being meted outto female protesters – particu-larly by a photo showing ayoung woman, stripped to herbra and jeans, being kicked anddragged along the ground bytwo police officers.

“This systematic degrada-tion of Egyptian women dis-honours the revolution, dis-graces the state and its uniformand is not worthy of a greatpeople,” Clinton said. Sheadded: “Women are being

beaten and humiliated in thesame streets where they riskedtheir lives for the revolutiononly a few short months ago.”

Soldiers fired live roundsand used batons to dispersedemonstrators . The fourprotesters killed during a dawnraid included a 19-year-old. Allwere shot. A 15-year-oldprotester, Ahmed Saad, wasalso said to be in a critical con-dition from a gunshot wound.

Doctors working inmakeshift field hospitals said atleast 13 people had been killedand hundreds wounded sincethe latest unrest in Tahrir beganlast Friday.

Protesters demanding animmediate end to army rulehave gathered in the square, and in nearby streets leading toparliament and the cabinet

office.The UN secretary general,

Ban Ki-moon, has called thetactics used by the Egyptianauthorities ‘excessive’.

During Tuesday's demon-stration, female activists hand-ed out flyers depicting a hand –emerging from a military uni-form – stretching out to grope afrowning woman.

The writing over the flyerread: “Liars, stop the violence.”Samea Saleh, a woman wearingthe niqab (veil), said that themilitary was attempting to takeaway the Egyptian people'sdignity.

Referring to the images ofthe young woman lying half-naked on the street – her cloakripped in two – Saleh said suchimages showed nothing hadimproved under military rule.

WASHINGTON: President Asif AliZardari's return to Pakistan from Dubaicould be just a ‘cameo appearance’ beforehis wife and former Prime Minister BenazirBhutto’s death anniversary on December 27and after that he would be probably leavefor a long convalescene in London orDubai, a media report said.

Zardari had suddenly flown out ofPakistan on December 6 to Dubai where hewas admitted in a hospital. His exact healthstatus is not known with reports rangingfrom a heart attack to a stroke that causedbleeding in his brain. He returned toPakistan on Sunday night.

New York Times quoted some Pakistaniand Western officials last week as sayingthat “If Zardari returned, it could be only fora cameo appearance before December 27”,Benazir’s fourth death anniversary.

After that, Zardari would probably leavefor a long - perhaps permanent - convales-cence in London or Dubai, the report quot-ed officials as saying.

Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007) was the firstwoman prime minister of Pakistan. She wastwice the prime minister - 1988-90 and1993-96 - but could not complete any term.

She was removed in 1996 as prime min-ister on charges of corruption, and wentinto self-imposed exile to Dubai in 1998.

Benazir returned to Pakistan in October2007 after an understanding with thenPresident Pervez Musharraf. She was grant-ed amnesty and all corruption charges werewithdrawn.

She was assassinated in December2007, after a Pakistan Peoples Party rally inRawalpindi, just two weeks before thescheduled parliamentary elections of 2008.

Scores of people have beenkilled in Syria, oppositionactivists say, in a second dayof heavy bloodshed. The

Syrian Observatory for HumanRights put the death toll at 47,while the Local Co-ordinationCommittees said as many as 78people were killed.

Meanwhile video has emergedof a young boy, whose body wasapparently torn in half by shellingin the city of Homs.

In the north-west, dozens ofarmy deserters, security forcesmembers and civilians reportedlydied in clashes.

The claims have not beenindependently verified, as foreignmedia are banned from reportingin Syria.

The UN says more than 5,000people have been killed acrossSyria since protests againstPresident Bashar al-Assad eruptedin March.

Damascus says it is fighting‘armed terrorist gangs’, who wantto destabilise the country.

Live-fire exercisesThe London-based Observatorysaid that at least 23 people werekilled in clashes between armydeserters and the security forces inthe north-western province ofIdlib on Tuesday.

It said that dozens of civiliansremained besieged by an armyoffensive in two villages in theJabal al-Zawiya area.

The group also cited defectorsas saying that 100 of their col-leagues were “killed or woundedbetween the villages”, the AFPnews agency reported.

The LCC put the death toll inIdlib at 59.

Both groups also reporteddeaths in Homs, Hama and Deraa.

Video footage emerged onTuesday, allegedly showing thebody of a young boy torn in half inthe ruins of two houses hit byarmy shelling in Homs.

Meanwhile, Syria’s air andnaval forces conducted live-firemanoeuvres aimed testing theirreadiness to repulse “any aggres-

sion against the homeland,” theofficial Sana news agencyreported.

On Monday, more than 70 sol-diers were shot dead after desert-ing their positions in Idlib, activists said.

Syrian opposition sources saidthe army was intensifying its cam-paign in Idlib ahead of the expect-ed deployment of observers who

will monitor the Syrian govern-ment’s implementation of an ArabLeague peace initiative.

League officials have said thatthe first monitors could be in thecountry as early as Thursday.

This follows the announce-ment that Damascus had agreedto the observer mission onMonday.

Syrian Foreign Minister WalidMuallem said the country’ssovereignty would be protectedbecause the Arab League hadagreed to amendments to the deal, which also calls for all violence tobe halted, for the withdrawal oftroops from the streets, and therelease of detainees.

The observers would be ‘free’in their movements and ‘under theprotection of the Syrian govern-ment’, Mr Muallem added, butwould not be allowed to visit sen-sitive military sites.

The observers will have a one-month mandate that can beextended by another month ifboth sides agree.

The leader of the SyrianNational Council, an oppositionumbrella group, has dismissed thegovernment’s decision as “just aploy”. Activists say that if the gov-ernment does withdraw the army, many areas will immediately fallout of its control.

JOHANNESBURG: Cookbooksare competing with more seriousworks on Nelson Mandela inSouth African bookshops thisChristmas, after the icon’s per-sonal chef has published a collec-tion of her choicest dishes.Xoliswa Ndoyiya’s book, UkutyaKwasekhaya (home cooking) -Tastes from Nelson Mandela’sKitchen gathers 62 recipes withshort family anecdotes about thehero.

The book offers recipes fromlemon Brussels sprouts to curriedmango rice salad, paella, ninekinds of soup, orange turkey, var-ious chicken dishes, and mama’smeatballs.“Those are not all myrecipes. I do have more thanthat!” said the 49-year-old chef, smiling.

Also known as Xoli, shecaught the cooking bug from hergrandmother, who cooked for awhite family.Xoli’s story sadly istypical of many black SouthAfricans.Brought up in a ruraltownship, she found a job asdomestic worker first with awhite family in Johannesburg, then in a Jewish old age home.

Her first husband was killed

in the township violence betweenMandela’s African NationalCongress (ANC) and a rival con-tender for power, the ZuluInkhata Freedom Party (IFP), inthe early 1990s right before theend of apartheid. Her secondhusband died in a car accident.

The chef’s four children were

raised in the countryside by hermother and sister, 800 kilometres(500 miles) from Johannesburg.

But then Xoli met Mandela.A friend pulled a few strings

and she got the job as his cook in1992, two years before Mandelawon South Africa’s first multira-cial general elections andbecame president.

Since then, Xoliswa Ndoyiyahas fed not only the statesman, but also his family, ANC leaders, foreign heads of state and famousvisitors like Michael Jackson.American talk-show queenOprah Winfrey was especiallyfond of Xoli’s creamy potatoes, itseems.

Home cooking is Xoli’s trade-mark, as the book’s title suggests.Under her watch, Mandela’s tableturned into a culinary melting-pot, integrating traditional Xhosacuisine, South African classicslike sour milk (amasi) and Jewishdishes she learnt from her previ-ous employers.

Ukutya Kwasekhaya, co-writ-ten with food critic Anna Trapido,is one of the few cook books inSouth Africa that includes recipesof traditional African dishes.

Piers Morgan repeatedlydenied any knowledge of

phone hacking at the DailyMirror, in the face of aggressivequestioning about previousstatements he has given aboutthe scale of the practice on FleetStreet.

The former editor, who nowhas his own daily talk show inAmerica, told the Levesoninquiry into press standards he“had no reason or knowledge tobelieve it was going on” duringhis 10-year tenure.

In the first of a series oftense exchanges, the inquiry’slead counsel, Robert Jay,pressed Morgan to providemore details about who hadplayed him a voicemail left forSir Paul McCartney’s formerwife Heather Mills. Morgan

wrote about the incident in theDaily Mail in October 2006.

Morgan refused four times, saying on each occasion that hecould not risk identifying asource. Lord Justice Levesoneventually intervened to say hewas prepared to call Mills inorder to establish whether shehad allowed Morgan to listen toher voicemails.

Morgan responded: “Whatwe know for a fact about LadyHeather Mills McCartney is thatin her divorce case, PaulMcCartney stated as a fact thatshe had recorded their conver-sations and given them to themedia.”

Giving video evidence bysatellite from the US, Morganwas confronted by a slew ofarticles and interviews he hasgiven, and numerous passagesin his book, The Insider, inwhich he talked about phone-hacking being prevalent onFleet Street.

The inquiry earlier heardfrom a former News of theWorld TV journalist,, who toldthe inquiry she resigned fromthe paper after being asked toget a quote from celebrity aboutan affair of her husband.

Contests and competitionshave been used for a verylong time now as a market-

ing tool. Some of these competi-tions have been quite unusual. But it doesn’t get more unusualthan this — a championship forpaint-watchers!

The paint-watching champi-onship is being organized byLocaltraders.com, an onlineresource for finding reliable localtradespeople in the UK.Normally, the website works byhaving people submit details of ajob they need done, and several

tradespeople bid over the pro-ject. Now, they’ve come up withthis innovative idea to attractnew customers.

The ‘Watching Paint DryChampionships’ is truly a test ofpatience, mental strength andphysical endurance. The way itworks is that interested partici-pants should send in a photo-graph of themselves watchingpaint dry, along with the longesttime they’ve stared at the wall ofpaint without looking away. They’re also asking for a shortwrite-up about your favourite

paint colour and why you like it.A few candidates would be

shortlisted from all the entriesreceived, who will participate inthe grand final paint watchingcompetition.

The event is to be held infront of media from around theworld, at a location in centralEngland. Around half-a-dozenpaint watchers would fight itout for the world title. Accordingto Localtraders.com, the sport isquite called for at this time. “Let’s be honest, with England’srecent performances on thefootball and rugby pitches mostof us would prefer to watchpaint dry anyway,” they say ontheir website.

Regarding the sport itself, theorganizers feel that entrantsdon’t require any vigorous train-ing regime, nor do they need tobe physically fit. Previous experi-ence in paint watching is alsonot required. What’s moreimportant is “mental strength, concentration and endurance.”They advise participants to getas much practice as possible. Itsure does look like the champi-onship is going to get a lot ofpeople interested.

A Russiancity for

the deadA place called the City of

the Dead actually exists inRussia’s North Ossetia,

hidden in one of the five moun-tain ridges that cross the region.Needless to say, several mythsand legends shroud the place, with locals claiming that no onehas ever come back alive. The‘city’ hardly ever gets any touristseither, although this might bedue to the difficulty of just get-ting there.

Reaching Dargavs, the City ofthe Dead, entails a three-hourjourney through winding, nar-row roads, and several hills.

The foggy mountain weath-er certainly doesn’t help mat-ters. Once there, you’ll find thatthe city is in fact another hillcovered with small white build-ings. It is these very buildingsthat cause the place to get it’sname. The white house-likestructures, countless in num-

ber, are stone crypts wherelocals buried their loved ones. The city itself is an ancientOssetian cemetery. Each familyof the area has a crypt, and thehigher the structure, the greaterthe number of people buried init. The oldest of the crypts datesback to the 16th century.

The area is of little interest toanyone, barring a few archaeolo-gists who have made someunusual discoveries here. It was

discovered for instance, that thebodies inside the crypts wereburied in wooden structures thatlook like boats. The mysteryremains as to how the boatscame to be in a place with nonavigable rivers. One explana-tion is that the departed soul hadto cross a river in order to get toheaven, and hence the boat.Another interesting presence isthat of a well in front of eachcrypt. It is said that once the

Ossetians buried their dead, theywould drop a coin in the well. Ifit happened to hit a stone at thebottom, it was taken to meanthat the soul had reached heav-en. Some buildings are out oflimits – these are the crypts ofthe criminals of the land. It isalso said that when plagueswiped out entire families, peoplewith no one to bury them wouldcome to their family crypt andwait for their death.

Jim Wick, owner of WickidPets in Wolverhampton, found the exotic creature in

a plastic box when he arrived atwork. The 3ft–long crocodilehas been taken in by the exoticanimal specialist, who admitshe was lucky not to lose a chunkof his arm after making the dis-covery.

“I thought it might havebeen kittens or turtles becausewe often have animals left out-side by people who don't wantthem any more,” Mr Wick said.“I put my hand in straight awayto test the warmth of the water.I'm lucky it wasn't aggressivebecause it could have had myhand off.”

Mr Wick recovered quicklyfrom the surprise, and picked upthe animal and took it to one ofhis reptile vivariums. Staff have

been looking after the femalecaiman, which they have namedSnappy the Christmas Crocodile, feeding it a diet of rats and mice.

Mr Wick said he was morethan happy to keep caring forhis latest visitor, which is capa-ble of growing to 8ft. "We'll haveher here for a few days then if noone comes forward, she’ll prob-ably go to somewhere like WestMidland Safari Park,” he said.“She's in good health so hasclearly been looked after.” MrWick has contacted the police tofind out whether there havebeen any reports of missingcrocodiles but to no avail. However, he has his own suspi-cions about what has happened.“Some people aren't given thecorrect facts when they buy ani-mals like this and they find themtoo much to cope with.”

Her mother, Tracey, from Brickhill,Bedford, found the note – which ends“Remember… two of these, or youdie” – in Mekeeda’s school bag buthas vowed to try to meet her daugh-ter’s demands rather than punish her.‘When I first found the letter, I

thought it was funny. Now I think I’dbetter get her what she wants. Thelast thing I want is for her to killSanta,” said Mrs Austin, 40.

And the demanding Mekeedaadded: “I don’t really believe in Santaany more but I was angry because Ithought I wasn’t going to get all thepresents I wanted this year. I want allof these things and I don’t see why Ishouldn’t get them.”

Luis Suarez has been banned for eightmatches and fined £40,000 by theFootball Association for racially abus-

ing Patrice Evra. The Liverpool striker, who has the right

of appeal, was sanctioned by an FAIndependent Regulatory Commission.

Evra told French TV he was raciallyabused by the Uruguayan on 10 occasionsduring Manchester United’s BarclaysPremier League match at Anfield onOctober 15.

The FA said in a statement: “AnIndependent Regulatory Commission hastoday found a charge of misconductagainst Luis Suarez proven, and haveissued a suspension for a period of eightmatches as well as fining him £40,000,pending appeal.”

The commission’s ruling stated, “MrSuarez used insulting words towards MrEvra during the match contrary to FA RuleE3(1);

The insulting words used by Mr Suarezincluded a reference to Mr Evra’s colourwithin the meaning of Rule E3(2);

Mr Suarez shall be warned as to hisfuture conduct, be suspended for eightmatches covering all first team competi-tive matches and fined the sum of £40,000;

The [penalty] is suspended pendingthe outcome of any appeal lodged by MrSuarez against this decision.”

The FA confirmed that Suarez’s sus-pension will not start until the outcome ofany appeal.

The the statement added: “MrSuarez has the right to appeal the deci-sion of the Independent RegulatoryCommission to an Appeal Board. Anappeal must be lodged within 14 daysof the date of the written reasons forthe decision. The penalty is suspendeduntil after the outcome of any appeal,or the time for appealing expires, orshould Mr Suarez decide not to appeal. The reason for this is to ensure that thepenalty does not take effect before anyappeal.”

EVENING STANDARD

Liverpool have defended Luis Suarez and saythey are “surprised and disappointed” he

has been charged with racially abusing PatriceEvra.

The striker has been banned for eightmatches and fined £40,000 by the FootballAssociation for his part in an altercation withthe Manchester United defender at Anfield onOctober 15. Suarez has 14 days to appeal thedecision and his suspension is not due to beginuntil the completion of any appeals process.

The Reds did not officially confirm whetheror not they would be appealing, but said:“Liverpool Football Club is very surprised anddisappointed with the decision of the FootballAssociation Commission to find Luis Suarezguilty of the charges against him. We look for-ward to the publication of the Commission’sJudgment.” Their statement continued: “Wewill study the detailed reasons of theCommission once they become available, butreserve our right to appeal or take any othercourse of action we feel appropriate withregards to this situation.

“We find it extraordinary that Luis can befound guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alonewhen no one else on the field of play - includ-ing Evra’s own Manchester United team-matesand all the match officials - heard the allegedconversation between the two players.” ES

Blackburn boss Steve Kean was booeddown the tunnel for possibly the lasttime as his Rovers side lost their rele-

gation duel with Bolton 2-1 at Ewood Park.Mark Davies gave the visitors the per-

fect start with his fourth-minute openerand Nigel Reo-Coker doubled Bolton’s leadbefore the break.

Aiyegbeni Yakubu did pull one back forRovers in the middle of a much-improvedsecond-half display but it was not enough.

Christopher Samba got his clearanceall wrong inside his own penalty area andDavid Ngog had enough time to recoverhis position deep inside the home penaltyarea, then cut a pass back to an unmarkedDavies, who stroked a first-time effort

beyond Paul Robinson.Stand-in skipper Gary Cahill did not

catch his half-volley right from ZatKnight’s knockdown, otherwise Roverswould have been in even bigger trouble.

Ivan Klasnic then started the move thatended with Bolton bagging their second, finding Nigel Reo-Coker with a deft touch.Reo-Coker then found Martin Petrov, whoraced down the left wing before crossingback to the midfielder, who despite havinghis back to goal, had enough time to turnand drill a low shot into the bottom corner.

Owen Coyle’s euphoria on the touch-line contrasted sharply with the desolationof Kean, who heard more calls for his head, with the Blackburn supporters also vent-ing their anger at the owners, Venky’s, whothey blame for landing the club in themess they were in.

Rovers came so close to giving Keansomething to shout about early in the firsthalf, with Junior Hoilett pulling the ballback to Steven Nzonzi whose effort flewjust over with Jussi Jaaskelainen nowhere.

Cahill blocked Yakubu’s shot on theturn, then Mauro Formica and SimonVukcevic were replaced by Ruben Rochinaand David Goodwillie. ES

Manchester City managerRoberto Mancini has reiteratedthe Blues will not allow Carlos

Tevez to leave the club on loan.City officials will meet their AC Milan

counterparts on Thursday in an attemptto reach a deal. Milan have already saidthey do not have the cash just now tobuy Tevez outright, but it seems unlessthey do, the fiery Argentina star will notbe joining the Serie A giants.

“I hope we can find a good solutionfor us and Carlos,” said Mancini. “Wewant Carlos to come back and play foot-ball and the best solution for us is to sellhim. We can’t let him leave on loan.”

With Tevez currently still inArgentina, City’s stance runs the risk ofextending the present impasse beyondthe January transfer deadline. However,as Mancini outlined, there is a simplereason behind the Blues’ position.“When Manchester City buy a player, they have to pay a lot of money,” he said.“But when we want to sell them, theyhave to go on loan. This is not good. It isnot correct for the other players.” ES

Australian batsman Ed Cowan onWednesday said he didn’t feel ner-

Cowan, who hit 109against the Indians in a drawn prac-tice match here, was drafted into theAustralian squad for the opening Teststarting on Monday in Melbourne. “Itold a friend on the phone it wasprobably the least nervous I’ve beenall season. It felt like a free hit for me,that’s probably the best I’ve played allseason. I think from ball one, I don’tthink I played a bad shot,” Cowansaid. Cowan said he is thinking howthe Indians would manage if ZaheerKhan and Ishant Sharma, both injury-prone, were to break down in themiddle of the Test. “Zaheer is a greatcompetitor on the world stage. I don’tknow how fit Sharma is going to bebut it’s a risk if both him and Zaheerare in the team and both break down-- so I’m sure they’re aware of that aswell,” said Cowan.

From what I see onthe city roads daily, people should be taxedfor abusing the license to drive. The cityadministration should think of creating fewzones where no motorised vehicles shouldbe allowed. Strict implementation of trafficrules and an efficient public transport sys-

tem are required to encourage peopleto leave their vehicles at home

and thus reduce congestion onroads. After all, there can beno gain without pain

Criminal waste of foodPostnoon reporter has correctly highlight-ed the great wrong we are doing on adaily basis. When we pass beside thosemassive piles of disposed vegetables, thethought of poor people does occur butstops as soon as the matter is outof sight. The massive amount offood reso u rces thus wasted can berouted to the needy only if the initia-tive comes at an individual level toalert the concerned NGO. It is goodthat NGOs have taken up work in thisarea. I thank Postnoon for printing thisstory and thus spreading awarenessamong its readers about this issue.

Fire safety issues scaryIt is sad that even buildings in chief minis-ter’s office compound don’t have fire safe-ty clearance. Tragedy after tragedy has totake place to remind us about the dangers

we are inviting on ourselves anddear ones by not following therules that were put in place toprevent them. The violators andthe officials who ignored theseviolations through omission orcommission must be bookedand made to pay compensa-

tion even if that would mean attach-ment of all their assets. Such dangerousrecklessness should not be tolerated.

Three decades ago Indira Gandhibrushed aside the cry against cor-ruption as a “global phenomenon”.Right she was in its virility. But shemissed the point; while corruption,

born of human greed, has been around sinceprehistoric times, rulers mandated for thecommon good have to put a bulwark againstthe disease. And, many countries did, butIndia did not. Look at Denmark, NewZealand, finland, Sweden, Netherlands, andthe UK which have all brought corruption inpublic life to a minimum.

A decade later, her son, Rajiv Gandhi, whoinherited the throne bemoaned only 15 paiseout of every rupee meant for the anti-povertyprogramme reaches beneficiaries. He toomissed the bus to do anything about it.

I believe Indira’s casual remark on corrup-tion as a global trend was the single mostimportant cause fueling corruption because itgave political sanctity to the rot leading to a“grab-all” stampede among the ruling elite. The result is there for everybody to see. Wenow live, breath, and bathe in corruption somuch so that Swiss banking officials have saidthat the largest depositors of illegal foreignmoney in Switzerland are Indians. While theexact amount of money stashed away in for-eign banks is heresy, Prof. R Vaidyanathan atthe Indian Institutes of Management has esti-mated the total at over `7,280,000 crore!

Little wonder then that when the diminu-tive whistle-blower and Gandhian AnnaHazare took up the anti-corruption cause itstruck a chord with millions. Anna stumbledupon a theme that was on everybody’s lips.

But, the man who could touch millionsemotionally was no Bismarck or MiltonFriedman. He could rouse but not lead and

later events proved it. The Jan Lokpal Billwhich the ‘silent crusader’ and formerKarnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegdehelped draft was rejected by the Congressgovernment and what followed was mass agi-tation, melodrama and the tragicomedy ofthe world’s biggest democracy getting held toransom and delivering a promise in hours tointroduce a Bill to kill the hydra-headeddemon called corruption!

What then followed was rule by visualmedia. The trouble with the visual media isthat it burns on highly inflammable senti-mental fuel. Once caught in its wave, thoseriding it refuse to touch the ground. An issuethat ought to be pragmatic became a sloganand the slogan bestowed on the well-meaningbut ill-informed Anna an aura that has madehim speak politically.

If A-Team had coolly examined the situa-tion, it would have found the impossibility ofan institution like Lokpal to police 57 lakhpublic servants from A to C class, and the

office of the PM and the CBI.Only an insane Indian will oppose a move

to stem corruption. But a law is only as effec-tive as its practicability.

When caught in the din cool thinking suf-fers. Hegde brought to book a ruler of a Statewithout resorting to a media carnival. NVittal, former CVC, did what many dreaded todo —publish names of corrupt public ser-vants in his website.

The Supreme Court served a severe blowto criminals in politics making it mandatoryfor them to swear they do not have a convic-tion, the computerisation has with onestroke, eliminated the massive corruption inrailway reservation, the voting machineshave largely eliminated the “art” of boothcapturing.

Law-making is not a festival, nor is it aprotest procession. India needs ‘Annaism’(spirit to say no to corruption) but not Anna, for our experience tells us anything producedin a hurry will be buried.

NEEDLESS HYPE over Gita row

Our leaders have beenbreathing fire over aRussian court allow-

ing a petition to ban theBhagavad Gita as a tool of

extremism and anti-nationalactivity. This created an uproar

in Parliament, causing twoadjournments. The ministry of

external affairs is talking to itsRussian counterpart on what

needs to be done to avoid a banon the holy scripture.

Considering our intolerance toanything we consider offensive

— from lesbianism toValentine’s Day — what gives

us the right to question aRussian ban on an ‘alien’ import

— no matter how sacred theGita is to us? When our courts

can admit petitions on anythingfrom ‘indecent remarks’ to‘offensive comments’, why

expect the Russians to be differ-ent? Our leaders should uphold

the tradition of tolerance andallow the issue to be sorted outthrough proper channels ratherthan engage in a verbal tirade.

WHY WE LOVE...Irom Sharmila

Irom Sharmila would fast onThursdays since childhood.

The day the Malom mas-sacre occurred, on November 2,2000, was also a Thursday andIrom, then 28, was fasting. And

she has continued since. Herdemand is that the Armed

Forces (Special Powers) Act,1958, be repealed: she says the

Act is the root cause of violencein NE states. The world stands in

awe of such will: it has seenonly a very few such as Irom

Gold prices to drop furtherPrudhvi Raju [email protected]

HYDERABAD: The 10gram price of 24 carat goldin Hyderabad market hasfallen by Rs 2,072 in the last20 days and touched Rs27,880 on Tuesday. Marketanalysts are expecting thegold price will furtherdecline and reach Rs 24,000in next two to three months.

“As the price of gold isdwindling, the sales in thecity market have drasticallycome down. The local buy-ers are not buying, but havetaken a position to wait andwatch for its further fall,”said Chintala Sudhakar, manager, Secunderabadgold silver jewellers and dia-mond merchant association.

“The gold prices will risewhen stock markets fall, buttoday we are in a differentscenario where both goldand stock markets are

falling and only dollar isgetting stronger day by day.As of now, investors lostinterest in gold and stocksand are only buying dollars. This is resulting in declinethe gold prices,” he said.

It is not yet the time forinvestors in gold. They canwait and buy 70 per cent ofit when it reaches Rs 25,000and the rest 30 per cent canbe bought at Rs 24,000.However, he expressed adoubt that gold has nevercontinuously dropped downby more than Rs 2,000. Hesaid this fall is temporary. The gold will bounce back, and reach Rs 30,000 afterthe fall. The prices may alsoincrease in the end ofFebruary and March due tomarriage season, heobserved.

The sales of gold rose inthe international market onTuesday and buying gainedmomentum on account of

decrease in gold prices.Even though the gold pricehas come down in the inter-national markets but Indianconsumer is not finding thesame difference due to fallin rupee value.

India imports most ofthe gold and pays in dollars. If the dollar value had beenat Rs 42 now, the gold pricewould have fallen to belowRs 24000. As the dollar priceis 53, Indians could not seethe actual gold pricedecline, feel analysts.

Global reports and anal-yses suggest that the priceof gold will go below US$1500 an ounce in the com-ing three months and isunlikely to retestSeptember's all-time highstill late 2012.

The forecasts came aftera bleak performance of goldlast week when prices fell toalmost three month low ofUS$1,560.

With obesity posing so many healthrisks what can one do to combat it?Shaping up is a good idea. This canbe done through diet modificationsand the following:

Exercise: Walking everyday for 30minutes is a good habit and a mustunless there is a contraindication.

If you have invested in a tread-mill then you can walk whenever youfeel like it. It is important to wearproper shoes that have a cushioningeffect as walking on hard surfacewith improper footwear can causearthritis of the knee and hip. In caseyou already have arthritis, walk asmuch as you can and then stop andproceed.

Medications: New medications havebeen introduced that reduce fatabsorption from the intestine andalso suppress appetite. Most of theobese patients have large appetitesand feel very hungry if they suddenlypartake in little quantities of food. But these drugs have side effects inpatients with high blood pressure orweak hearts or those who are proneto irregular beating of the heart. If you are overweight, then youshould get evaluated forn High blood pressuren High blood sugarn Thyroid function testn High blood cholesterol

These are important associatedproblems and need to be correctedto avoid developing a heart problemin the future. The future comes veryfast if you do not take care.

Finally a word of caution, it is notgood to suddenly stop eating or goon a crash diet as this can lead tohypoglycemia or electrolyte chan -ges. It is always better to graduallydecrease the quantity of food that weeat and also learn to avoid high calo-rie and fat containing foods. In mod-ern day parlance, a fancy termLifestyle modification is used butessentially it is healthy eating habitsand regular exercise. So go aheadand create a new you and ask thequestion “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the slimmest and fittest of all”.If the mirror replies “You, my dear!then you have achieved it all”

Building muscle canoffer many healthbenefits such asincreased bone,

muscle, tendon and liga-ment strength, improvedjoint function and stability, increased metabolism andbetter heart function. Butmuscle-building can takemany different forms, andthe results you want willdictate the approach youchoose.

To a bodybuilder, forexample, increased musclemass is essential while apower athlete such as ahigh jumper would thinkthis less important or per-formance-damaging.

The repetition ranges inyour weight training rou-tine are specific to themuscle adaptations theywill trigger.

For instance, one tofour reps with a large resis-tance will stimulate powergains, four to eight reps willstimulate strength gains, eight to 12 reps will stimu-late muscle building, and12-25 reps will stimulatelocal muscle endurance.

So what do you want toachieve from your training? It’s fair to say most of us arenot body builders or highjumpers — it’s more aboutwanting to feel healthier

and stronger, and lookingbetter in a T-shirt. There isgrowing evidence thatchanges in body shape andstrength and tone improve-ments only require muscu-lar fatigue — regardless ofthe load. So local muscularendurance training (usingsmaller dumbbells, or evenonly your own bodyweight) but with higherreps — will still allow forthat growth. So try andinclude functional move-ments in your workouts —squats and lunges are greatexamples — but withlighter weights than usual(or even none at all).

Not only are these exer-cises effective, but they’remore relevant in youreveryday life than the cleanand press or snatch youoften see being (badly) per-formed at one rep max inthe gym. And if you dohead to the free weightssection, remember it’s thelevel of muscular fatiguethat counts, not the sizeof the weights you’relifting — oryour abilityto gruntwitheveryrep.

And it’s now thefavourite of fashionistas across the world.A trend which was supposed to have beenforgotten in 2009 rears its head again thisyear. We find some celebs who rocked2011 in purple

Sofia VergaraBlue was the theme of the daybut Columbian actress and modelSofia altered the colour code a lit-tle when she turned up at theSmurfs premiere this year in astrapless embroidered columnpurple dress matched withturquoise earrings. She got espe-cially creative with a wriststacked full of fabulous bejew-elled bracelets. She was againspotted in a strapless purple leop-ard print prom dress with amatching leopard print clutch atthe UK premiere of Happy Feet 2.

Selena Gomez :All of 19, Selena’s knowl-

edge on fashion seems to begiving even the best dressed

women a run for their money.Out to support her boyfriendJustin Beiber at the premiere

of Never Say Never at LA the-atre in February this year, the

singer sported a jewel-toneknee-length Reem Acra satin

dress with nude heels thatshowed off her enviably long

legs. Splashes of sparkle onher shoes, belt and jewellery

keep the ensemble young, fresh and festive. We are quite

sure that Justin would havebeen very jealous of the

paparazzi who just could notget enough of Selena. Now

that's what we call style-savvy.

Natalie Portman:She was the darling of the industry this yearas she bagged almost each and every awardfor her commendable performance in BlackSwan. Natalie was the last to make herentrance on the red carpet at the Oscars thisyear and boy did she look splendid in this pur-ple Rodarte gown. The actor swathed her babybump in a regal silk chiffon gown, its V-neckbrightened with Swarovski crystals. Her bead-ed tassel Tiffany earrings continued theamethyst theme. It's yet another win for thelady on the red carpet.

Penelope Cruz:That she looks hot and ravishing in red no one can deny

but that she can look equally magical in purple is what wesay. In April this year Penelope was honoured with the

2,436th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. To celebratethis occasion the actor donned a purple lace fitted dress

with black heels. The dress showed off her post pregnancycurves really beautifully.

Kylie Minogue:Brunette beauty Kylie ismore often in the news forher singing than for hersense of fashion. However,we were pleased to see hermake this list. She may bewell on the other side ofthe 40s, but with hersequined purple gown shecould have as well passedfor a 20 something. If you looked at the list wehave for you, you mustalready be up in arms about

how we could exclude the mostpopular classics from the list. Inour defence, we plead creativeliberty. But more seriously, ourlist is not about good old fash-ioned classics. Instead, we haveincluded some off-beat takescentered on Christmas that mustnot be missed. Take a look.

5BAD SANTA: Okay, so thiswouldn’t be the obviouschoice of movie to pick for

your Christmas playlist. Butthink about it. For those whohave had enough of watchingthe classics and want to givethose tear ducts a rest, this is themovie to watch. In this darkcomedy, Santa Claus (Billy BobThornton) is a bitter, foul-mouthed alcoholic who teamsup with his midget friend (TonyCox) to concoct an elaboratescam to rob a mall. His plansturn awry when somewherealong the way, the Christmasspirit captures his heart and loand behold, it’s the season ofmiracles. Be warned, this is notone for the kids.

Hollywood’s only too happy to show you the way this holiday season. We take a look at some Christmas favourites...with a twist

Avengers assemble!

It’s one of the biggest and most eagerly awaitedfilms of 2012. If you are a comic book fan orlove superheroes, nothing gets bigger or better

than Avengers. Marvel heroes like Iron Man, Hulk,Thor, Captain America, Black Widow and Hawk Eyeteam up to save the world from destruction.Directed by Joss Whedon, the film stars RobertDowney Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Chris

Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L Jackson inlead roles. Hollywood has been riding on the suc-cess of superhero films and this could very well bethe goldmine for Marvel Studios.

The plot of the film is still under wraps, but if it’sgoing along the line of the original comic series thenwe are sure the Avengers will be fighting “the foesno single superhero can withstand.” Fasten yourseatbelts for a thrilling ride filled with spectacularspecial effects and superpowers. The film hits thescreens on May 4, 2012.

Most Awaited Movies of 2012

1IT’S A WONDERFULLIFE: We might as welladmit it. No holiday sea-

son is ever complete withouta re-run of this all-Americanclassic. As surprising as itmight seem, the movie lostmoney in the original run in1946 and was largely consid-ered a flop, because of it’srather dark portrayal ofsmall-town life. But for us,the appeal is fairly obvious. The movie centres aroundGeorge Bailey (JamesStewart) who is forced to seehow the world would be likeif he’d never existed. At itsheart, this touching tale cap-tures the spirit of Christmasand everything that it standsfor —family, friends and thejoy of life.

4GREMLINS: “Now I have another reason to hate Christmas” isprobably the most unlikely dialogue with which to start aChristmas movie. To be sure, that’s exactly what Gremlins

is — an unlikely, unpredictable and as unique as can be comedies go.The movie is a hilarious parody of popular myths about Christmas, family, boogey-men, horror movies etc. Yuletide is happening aroundthe action and you don’t want to miss it!

3HOME ALONE: Itreigned at the box officefor 12 consecutive

weeks, grossed over $500million and made MacaulayCulkin the biggest child staron the planet. Need we morereasons for featuring HomeAlone on this list? A holidaystaple, it is a beloved familycomedy about an eight-yearold boy Kevin (Culkin) who isleft behind at home while hisfamily goes holidaying and itis one of the most entertain-ing movies of all time. Anticsof the bumbling burglars,Culkin’s slap-stick one-linersand the good old-fashionedChristmas beat-down makesit an adorable watch. Whilethe sequels are also enter-taining, they are not half ascharming or ingenious as theoriginal.

2THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS: You don’t have tobe a movie buff to know that there are all kinds of movies themedaround Christmas. And they are not too different from one

another either. Some holly, some heart, some happiness and youhave yourself a hit. So when we say this 1993 animation film by TimBurton is different, we mean it. Featuring Jack Skellington, king ofHalloween Town, Sally the rag doll, the evil Oogie Boogie, the mis-chievous trick-or-treaters Lock, Shock and Barell, Nightmare beforeChristmas is in equal parts, intelligent, entertaining and funny. Not tomention a must-watch for you!

Band BajaaBaraatmight haveincreased theexpectationsfrom directorManeeshSharma, buthis Ladies vsRicky Bahlfails to impress

Taniya [email protected]

When Band BajaaBaraat releasedlast year andbecame a hit, it

announced the arrival of notonly a good actor inBollywood— Ranveer Singh, but it also gave the industry apromising young director —Maneesh Sharma. So, it wasonly natural for people toexpect a good treat with hissecond film but many weredisappointed with Ladies vsRicky Bahl. Though itboasted of goodwriters likeDevika Bhagatand HabibFaisal, itcouldn’t set

the cash registers at the boxoffice ringing.

Maneesh repeated his hitpair of Anushka Sharma andRanveer for his second venturebut the surprise element wasperhaps Parineeti Chopra,Priyanka Chopra’s cousin, whowas part of the Yashraj Filmsmarketing team. Talking abouthow he signed up Parineeti forthe film, Maneesh says,“Parineeti’s casting was anexciting one. I heard that shewas interested in acting and Idid talk to her following whichI was convinced that sheshould play the role of Dimple

Chadda. When I told Adiabout this, he thought I

was joking but I obviouslywasn’t. I vouched for her talentand that’s how she became apart of the cast.” It’s interest-ing to note that Parineeti didget appreciated for her role.

A hardcore Aditya Chopraloyalist, Maneesh is yet to ven-ture out of the Yashraj campand he is in no hurry to do so.Quiz him about working withother filmmakers andManeesh is quick to say, “Idon’t have any such plans. Iam comfortable working withAdi and in fact, I love it. Manypeople have approached me

since the

release of BBB, but honestly Ihaven’t had the time to thinkabout them.”

One hit film doesn’t makeone a brand, and Maneesh isonly too aware of the fact. Hemakes a candid confession, “Ihaven’t become a brand yet.One needs to have a body ofwork to even think of becom-ing one. And I have not madeany conscious effort towards it,I can’t really expect any suchthing if I am unable to make aconnect with the audience. Idon’t think on those lines anddon’t want to be corrupted bysuch thoughts,” he says.

Loosely based on the 2006Hollywood flick, John TuckerMust Die, Ladies vs Ricky Bahlis a film which has Ranveerplaying a suave con man, whotargets rich ladies and vanish-es with the loot.

The film came to Maneeshas a bound script and Adityawas the brain behind thestory though Maneesh got tochoose the writers. There

was pressure on Maneeshfrom the beginning andthough unavoidable, hedid not let it affect hiswork. This was thefirst time that Maneeshshot a film in Goaand it was a newexperience for himand he says thatas a filmmakerand he enjoyedit greatly.

The director, who is currentlytaking a break, isalso keen onmaking an actionflick in the nearfuture.

Sonam has no qualmsabout using profanity

Having startedoff her careeras a shy anddemure lass,

playing girl-next-doorroles, Sonam Kapoor hasundergone a completetransformation for hernext film Players, bygoing blunt and showingher middle finger.

“I don’t believe incensorship so whetherthey like it or not, I reallydon’t care about it. I justwant people to come andsee my film. Showing amiddle finger is a part oftoday’s lingo,” Sonamsaid. “I think it is part ofour language...it is part ofyour lingo. We abusewhen we have a normalconversation with ourfriends. I don’t believeanything should be cen-sored. It is crazy, especial-

ly when it comes to art,films...especially whenyou live in India wherefreedom of speech andexpression is our basicright,” she said.

Showing a middlefinger is better than whatwe read because what ishappening around theworld is worse. There areworse things that areavailable on the Internet, why isn’t there are anycensorship of them, sheasked. Initially, theCensor board had given agreen signal to the act,but later on, it got itblurred.

Hangover Part II have beendropped. Michael Alan Rubin, awriter who claimed in Octoberthat the film was based on hisautobiographical screenplay,Mickey and Kirin, has droppedhis litigation. Likewise ScottMcLean, who performed stuntsfor Ed Helms, is no longer seek-

ing damages for an injury he suf-fered during a car collision onsets. According to court records, both Rubin and McLean dis-missed their lawsuits voluntarily. That makes three Hangover IIlawsuits that have been resolvedthis year, the first of which wasover the Mike Tyson-style facetattoo Helms’ character sportedin the film. The Hangover Part IIhad the fourth most profitablebox office run of 2011.

Did Franco’s gradeget a professor fired?Adisgruntled New York

University professor just ble w a big hole in James Franco'sreputation as the actor who made picking up a master'sdegree (or three) in his sparetime look easy.

José Angel San tana is nowsuing NYU, claiming he got firedafter he gave the school's resi-dent Oscar nominee a D in hisDirecting the Actor II class forhis poor attendance record. Arep for the school calls theclaim"ridiculous," but, obvious-

ly, we're a little more interestedin finding out just how manyclasses Franco supposedlyskipped...According to Santana'slawsuit, filed on Friday in theNew York Supreme Court, the127 Hours star showed up fortwo of the course's 14 sessionsand had 12 unexcused absen ces.Santana's suit actually doesn'tlay the entire blame for his firingon his treatment of Franco, buthis attorney tells E! How good is Daniel Craig in Skyfall? So good that producer Michael G.

Wilson reportedly wants Craig to playJames Bond for another five films, bringing him to a grand total of eight.(Even if the lackluster Quantum ofSolace makes it seem as if he’s onlydone one so far, rather than two.) Thatwould make Craig the longest-runningBond — if they can get him to sign. ThePeople, via MI6, reports that during aninterview that gave a pretty featurelessupdate on the shoot for Skyfall,“Daniel’s been a terrific Bond, a superbactor and a terrific man,” the producersaid. “Filming has gone very well so farand I’d love Daniel to surpass Roger’srecord and do eight pictures. Daniel’sbeen an absolute pleasure to bearound because he takes the role soseriously. There’s really no one morepassionate about making these filmswork than him – he’s a filmmaker’sdream. It isn’t at all difficult to imaginewhy a producer might want Craig tosign on for the long haul — he’s capa-ble, multi-faceted, and popular. Thequestion is: does Daniel Craig want todo even one more Bond picture, muchless five?

Will Craig sign up formore Bond films?

Roochika Babbar's journeyto Telugu cinema was amatter of pure luck or as

she says, “happened out of theblue.” A Delhi-based televisionactress, she graduated fromYMCA with a PG in InteriorDesigning and she also has adegree in English from DelhiUniversity. Before venturinginto films, she had participatedin several reality shows like ZeeCinestars ki Khoj, Bollywoodclub for ZOOM TV and has beenpart of Doordarshan's specialprogramme for UNICEF. “I wasalso a Miss India finalist andFace of Punjab in 2007,”Roochika adds.

Reality shows are the newrage on television and they didprovide her a good platform. However, there was acatch.“Reality shows are usuallyscripted. Everyone knowswhat's going to happen in thatepisode. At the end of the day, contestants end up being pup-pets in the hands of the produc-tion house and the judges,” shereveals.

It didn't take too long forher to jump into the bandwag-on of actresses who move onfrom television to feature films.“Acting in films is any day betterthan being in a reality show. Here, you have more freedomto showcase your talent,”she explains.

She'll soon beseen in AanandRavi's upcomingfilm titled Parentswhich has HappyDays star VamseeChaganti in the lead. It's her first film as alead actress and there'san interesting storybehind how she bagged therole. “Someone found me onthe Internet which took me by

surprise. Then I got in touchwith Vamsee and Aanand. Igave my audition through awebcam sitting in my roomin Delhi,” she recalls laugh-ingly.

Parents is a road filmand it tells the story of anorphan who goes insearch of his parents. Most part of the filmwas shot inHyderabad,Araku,Vizag,

Chennai, Goa and Mumbai.Ask her about the experienceof shooting on the road for

the film and she reveals,“Vamsee didn't want to driveand so I can't remember howmany kilometers I drove iton my own.”

Her character's name isSahasra and Roochikasays, “Sahasra is an inter-esting character. As the

film progresses, shebecomes more mature

and she feels thepain of the herowho is searchingfor his parents.”

The toughestpart of the shoot, she says, was try-ing to cope withthe language.“Aanand Raviwas patient

enough tounderstand myproblem with thelanguage. Everyevening, an assis-tant directorwould sit with meto help me withthe lines,” she says.Another time, shesurprised the filmcrew by shooting arisky shot inches

away from a valley.“Shamdat, the cine-matographer of the

film, wanted to can a shot withthe lead pair sitting on a grilljust inches away from edge of acliff near Araku. Vamsee hadvertigo and when I went aheadto shoot the scene, I had noidea about the risk I was taking.Aanand and Shamdat madesure that the shot was takenwithout any delay. Even mymother, who accompanied meon the sets, was concerned,”Roochika recalls.

“I am looking forward toacting in more films. In fact, Iam a huge fan of Salman Khanand I would love to meet himsomeday,” she says. Now, that'sanother long journey whichsounds interesting.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
