“Is it possible to ster-ilise monkeys like wedo to dogs?” was thequestion asked by

three MLAs at the HyderabadDistrict Review Committee(DRC) meeting at Jubilee Hallon Wednesday.

MLAs said this is a seriousissue in many areas, and onlythose who suffer it know aboutthe severity. This they remindedto those making fun of the issuein the meeting. GHMC commis-sioner Krishna Babu suppressedhis smile and said the troublewas with catching them. “It’s nomonkey business; capturingthem is a tough task,” he said.Instead of committing to theissue, the commissioner onlygave a vague response.

POWER HEATS UP TALKAs expected, water and electrici-ty problems reigned supreme atthe review meeting. Power crisisin the parts of the City, whereofficially it is three hours andunofficially six hours, made

almost all MLAs demand con-struction of sub-stations, whichhas been pending for years. Forinstance, there was governmentland in Petlaburj for this, but forreasons best known to the gov-ernment it does not yet have asubstation.

“If the government is strug-gling for day-to-day provisionof power, how would it provide10 MW power to the MetroRail?” asked Hyderabad MPAsaduddin Owaisi.

BJP MLA G Kishan Reddyregretted that the governmentwas wasting precious solarenergy. He said that the GHMC,in coordination with electricitydepartment, should help peopleget alternative power energysources. Minister for industriesGeeta Reddy, who presidedover the talks, said she will takeup the matter, but this led to afracas between the leaders andthe minister.

WATER PROBLEM HMWSSB denying water tothose with a meager arrear of`2,000 was cruel, opined manyMLAs. As others joined the

debate, the water board MD JSyamala Rao pacified them andsaid only those with an arrear of`10,000 and above will bedenied water. To mitigate thesuffering, Geetha Reddy gavepermission for each MLA to dig10 borewells in their areas todeal with the water shortage.

Krishna phase-III and itsimpact were elaborately dis-cussed. “We will be making thisa election issue,” said Owaisi.

SECURITY Asaduddin Owaisi lamentedthat the issue of security was noton the DRC agenda. Referring tothe Dilsukhnagar blasts he said,“Three specific warnings weregiven. It could have been pre-vented.” Even Sashidhar Reddy, member of Central CommitteeNDMA (National DisasterManagement Authority),acknowledged the negligence.

Some 3,500 CCTV camerasat a cost of `450 crore have beenplanned to be set up in the Statebut it is not budgeted, leadersregretted. “How serious are thepolice on the issue?” askedOwaisi. The issue of wine shops

in the vicinity of schools andreligious places did come up butdid not get enough attention. Some members alleged thatshop owners are bribing offi-cials and local leaders to shuttheir eyes to the violation.

GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS The pathetical condition of thegovernment school and vacantpositions of teachers wasbrought to the fore by Owaisi.According to him, the govern-ment was denying girls educa-tion by not providing toilets forthem. He challenged GeethaReddy to visit any school andsee if even one of them has ahealthy atmosphere. “Almost allgovernment schools have mal-nourished children. What is thegovernment doing?” he asked.

When the issue ofCharminar pedestrian projectwas discussed, the MP claimedthat no ASI (ArcheologicalSurvey of India) permission wassought over the latest develop-ments. Commissioner Babu, however, refuted and said thatthis was not true as permissionwas indeed sought.

Terror off the agenda at DRC meeting

Despite the 21/2blasts, public

security was noton the DRC

agenda. Poor condition of public

schools wasbrought up but nofirm commitment

was given. TheMonkey menace

was another issuedealt frivolously.

Chief Minister N Kiran KumarReddy, who hopes to lead theCongress during the General

Elections next year, has found a newmantra to please the party high commandand to draw people to the ruling party.

It is nothing new. Taking a cue fromlate chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy,Kiran has zealously begun naming everygovernment welfare programme after lateCongress leaders Indira Gandhi and RajivGandhi.

After taking charge as CM in times ofsevere political crisis, Kiran has launchedseveral pro-poor welfare programmes inthe State. A programme that is close to hisheart is the Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu, which isaimed at providing jobs to lakhs of unem-ployed youth of the State.

In the New Year, the chief ministerlaunched two new programmes and hasnamed them after Indira Gandhi. The firstwas Indiramma Kalalu (Indira Gandhi’sdreams) programme to promote the SC/STSub-Plan legislation across the State andAmma Hastham (mother’s hand).

These two programmes reflect the per-sona of Indira Gandhi and carries her

images prominently. According to a seniorCongress MLA, who is close to the CM,the main objective behind launching theprogramme was to use Indira Gandhi’spro-poor image to attract people andthereby reap the benefits at the next elec-tions. “Former prime minister IndiraGandhi still enjoys a huge fan followingacross the country. Her name is enough toget us votes. We just want to cash in on herpopularity as we have been doing for thelast three decades,” the leader said whilespeaking to Postnoon on Wednesday.

UGADI GIFTAs part of the New Year celebrations ofTelugu people, the chief minister willlaunch the revolutionary Amma Hasthamin Ravindra Bharathi today. As part of theAmma Hastham programme, Kiran willgive nine essential commodities in packsat the subsidised price of `185 as againstthe market price of `292 to all white rationcard holders in the State.

The essential commodities being sup-plied include wheat atta, pamolin oil, sugar, iodised salt, wheat, chilly powder, tamarind and turmeric powder. A total offive crore people from a total of 8.5 crorepeople of the State are expected to benefitfrom the scheme.

There is good news forpeople of AndhraPradesh if we go by theUgadi predictions at the

official government function atRavindra Bharati today.

Dr CVB Subramanyam, anastrologer and vedic teacher andthe head of department of astrol-ogy department of Potti SriRamulu Telugu University, pre-dicted a good monsoon and nomajor upheaval in the State inthe days ahead.

“The government andadministration will be stable.

The AP government will host anumber of covetous internation-al events this year and gain pres-

tige. Since monsoon is likely tobe normal, farms will prosperand farmers will be fairly

happy,” according to theastrologer. “Leaders will committhemselves to the welfare of thepeople of the State and achievemany successes, as the year iscalled Vijayanama year.”

Predictions, however, threwup some troubling possibilities.Runaway inflation is likely to bea major issue. This means thegovernment will have to payextra attention to arrest pricerise.

Chief Minister N KiranKumar Reddy, PCC chief BotsaSatyanarayana and others greet-ed Subramanyam with a shawland a bouquet.

When the CM heard his ownzodiac predictions, his face was

wreathed in smiles. His joy wascontagious. Soon, Botsa, whowas sitting just beside him andother Cabinet colleagues weresmiling too.

Earlier in the day, the chiefminister attended Ugadi celebra-tions at Gandhi Bhavan, theCongress party headquarter, with Botsa Satyanarayana andother party leaders.

LOCAL LEADERS SKIPInterestingly, Hyderabad districtin charge minister Dr J GeetaReddy, Hyderabad MPAsaduddin Owaisi, MayorMohd Majeed Husain, localMLA Virasat Rasool Khan allskipped the function.

Cong still banks on IndiraKiran, realising that nothing inspires people as much as IndiraGandhi’s name, has named all welfare programmes after her.

The fate of the 25-year-oldschool located within theUniversity of Hyderabad

complex hangs on a loose thread. The school, originally meant toprovide education for childrenfrom families in rural areas locat-ed around the university, willsoon be closed and replaced by aKendriya Vidyalaya (KV), thanksto a decision taken by the UoHadministration and the govern-ing body of the KendriyaVidyalaya schools, KendriyaVidyalaya Sangathan.

As a consequence of thisaction, doors will be closed to thelocals, as KV caters to children ofCentral government employees, including defence forces.

The school has a strength of1,200 students and teaches uptoclass XII. Earlier, this school wasexclusively reserved for childrenfrom poor economic back-

grounds, from villages likeNallagandla, Gopanpally andsurrounding areas. “The idea ofthis school was to cater to thepoor living around the universi-ty and this has been in vogue for25 years. Now the plan to changeit and make it a KendriyaVidyalaya does not make sense,”non-teaching staff member of theuniversity, Vikram Raju, said.

This decision has not gonedown too well with the non-teaching staff of the university, many of whom send their chil-dren to this school. Furthermore, the school provides employmentto 43 teachers and 10 non-teach-ing staff. “The new rules framedfor the KV have put 23 teacherson deputation with the proposedKV for three years. After that, they are given an option to workas non-teaching staff in thefuture-functional KendriyaVidyalaya. Of the (other) 20,there is no clarification. In themeanwhile, there are no clear

terms and conditions over ser-vice benefits offered because ofthis transition. Parents will beforced to send their children toprivate schools and pay exorbi-

tant amounts as fees once the KVis established,” says Raju.

HIGH COURT WRIT PETITION A writ petition was taken up at

the AP High Court by JusticeNaushad Ali. The writ petitionfiled by United EmployeesUnion against the decision tomove and convert the school intoa Kendriya Vidyalaya said therewas no reason for this suddendevelopment. Under the agreedterms, the university administra-tion would have to bear the costof constructing a new buildingfor the Kendriya Vidyalaya, aburden that would prove finan-cially difficult for the varsity, thepetition said.

However, Justice NaushadAli refused to grant an ex parteinterim order to stall the estab-lishment of the new school andalso refused to stay the March 27notice issued by the presentschool at the instance of the uni-versity, requiring students totake their transfer certificates atthe end of the current year.Teachers opposed to the movesay the it’s a move to make profitfrom education.

catered to the locals reeks of the varsity’s desire to make profit, allege teachers opposed to the plan.

When Sandeep Rajan, aprivate firm employeefrom Bangalore, came to

the City for an interview, he wasshocked to see the way auto andtaxi drivers hounded him at theSecunderabad railway station.

Finally, he managed to hirean auto to Uppal, where he wasput up. Noticing that Sandeepwas new to the City, the autodriver took him for a ride.Thankfully, he was able to trackthe location using GPS.

When he questioned the autodriver, the latter started gettingabusive and stopped the auto inthe middle of the road and askedhim to get down. Sandeep had tothen hire a radio taxi.

It is common for local resi-dents to face such a situation withauto drivers, or for that matter, even some private taxi drivers.

Citizens are unable to distin-guish between a genuine driverand those who cheat or areinvolved in criminal activities.

Most of these auto drivers arenot in uniform and do not wear a

badge for identification. Many ofthem do not even have therequired documents while driving.

“With the increasing crimerate, travelling by public trans-port is very dangerous. A fewdays back, I had hired an autofrom Begumpet to go toAmeerpet. Since the distance

was not much, the driver askedme to pay him `10 extra, towhich I agreed. However, afterreaching my destination, thedriver demanded `30 extra onthe meter, saying the place wasin the interior. When I threatenedhim to inform the police andasked him for his licence, he did

not have a licence and left theplace after using abusive lan-guage,” says Premalatha, a pri-vate firm employee.

Not denying the fact that theyhave been receiving a number ofcomplaints, mostly against theauto rickshaw drivers, the Citypolice said they will be imple-menting strict measures againstauto drivers who misbehave withpassengers. The police have nowasked auto owners to registerthemselves at police stations.

“As a part of the securitymeasure, all auto rickshaw own-ers in the Twin Cities are directedto register themselves at the traf-fic police stations. They havebeen directed to produce theiroriginal documents, like thedriving license, RC book, resi-dential proof as well as theirvoter ID card or Aadhaar card, tothe concerned traffic inspector. There are more than two lakhautos plying in the City and it isnot an easy task to identify theauto when a complaint is regis-tered. Most of the time, theowner sells his vehicle to some-one else, who further rents it outto a number of people, and the

RC does not change. The RTAwill have information about theowner at the time of registration,so tracking down the presentauto driver becomes a task. Toavoid all the confusion, we areplanning to start a database sothat we have concrete informa-tion. A sustain-able positive trend will emergeonce the economy and the envi-

FIX ITREUBEN EASEYAgence France-Presse

An innovative project inLondon is helpingpeople to prolong thelife of their electronic

devices by repairing them andencouraging others to do learnto do the same.

If you're the kind of personwho owns a mobile phone heldtogether with sticky tape, oryour laptop is running moreslowly every time you flip itopen, the Restart Project couldcome in extremely handy.

It brings together volunteerrepairers, technology enthusi-asts and engineers -- and saysthat in tough financial times it is"preparing the ground for afuture economy of maintenanceand repair".

At a recent event in the hipPrimrose Hill district, a steadystream of visitors — of all ages— arrived clutching computersand other broken-down items, many having heard about theservice via Twitter.

At tables dotted around theroom, repairers helped open up

the devices for inspection whileon the wall, a list kept track ofwhich problems had beensolved and which had not.

"Why throw somethingaway when you can fix it?" saidphotographer Jon Freeman, who walked away a happy manafter having his girlfriend's lap-top fixed.

He said he only wished hehad heard about the service ear-lier as he had recently paidApple for a new power cord forthe laptop.

"It would have been simpleto fix — Apple charge £65 ($100,76 euros)."

Diogo Castro, a Portugueseman in his 20s, was not quite solucky with his computer, butdid get some valuable adviceabout what was wrong. "Myfirst idea was to get a new onestraight away, but unfortunatelyI couldn't because of the money,so this project helped me a lot,"he said.

Founded in 2012, the RestartProject is the brainchild of twoadoptive Londoners, UgoVallauri, from Italy, and JanetGunter, a British-American.

Having worked in the develop-ing world for several years, theywere frustrated by the amountof waste they saw wheneverthey returned to the West, andlooked for a way to encouragepeople to repair and reuse theirbroken gadgets.

"Every time we'd come backhere we would see peopleupgrading, tossing perfectlygood technology, or giving upon things without even havingopened them," exclaimedGunter. "Would you take yourcar to the dump when you'venever even popped open thebonnet?"

Environmental goals aside, the pair also hope the eventswill help counter the feelings of

"disempowerment" people mayfeel from understanding virtual-ly nothing about how everydayobjects work.

"When something breaks, people don't know what to doabout it," said Vallauri. "They'velost trust in regards to profes-sional repairers, they are pushedby markets and advertising toalways look for the next bigthing. People feel this frustra-tion and tend to just get moreand more new things, asopposed to making the best useof what they already have."

The 'Restart parties', as theyare known, offer largely freerepairs for all but the biggestitems.

A key plank of the project'sethos is to promote the work ofskilled local repairers, andrevive some of Britain's war-time tradition of 'make do andmend'. As the project grows,Gunter and Vallauri plan to startlobbying manufacturers todesign more durable and easilyrepairable products. They havealso led workshops with stu-dents in local schools and uni-versities.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

CommentTHURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2013

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSIt’s Ugadi, new year for Telugus and Kannadigas. What must one wish foron the occasion of new year? Round-the-clock power and water supply atlesser rates, no corruption, good weather, prosperity for all, and less politi-cal piffle.

Hungary may havebeen hit hard bythe recession, butbudgetary con-straints are not

stopping Prime Minister andavid football fan Viktor Orbanpumping millions of euros intoinitiatives aimed at bringingfootballing glory back to thecountry - with the hope ofattracting fans to the polls in2014.

A capacity crowd of 16,000turned up on a freezing Marchday for the last football derbybetween Ferencvaros and Ujpestin Budapest's shabby 39-year-old Florian Albert Stadium.

The ground is now beingdemolished to make room for abetter, newer one: a controver-sial project all paid for byHungary's cash-strapped butfootball-friendly government, which has led an overhaul insports funding since its land-slide election victory in 2010.

At half-time beneath thedank stands at Ferencvaros,Tibor Kovesdy, a lifelong sup-porter of Fradi, as the club iscommonly called, told AFP hecouldn't wait for the new stadi-um.

"I don't bring my children

here as it's not a pleasant or safeenvironment. This club deservesa better home," he said.

Under the country's mosthigh profile football fan, thegovernment has earmarkedpublic funds for new footballstadia.

But the gifts being showeredon the sport are seen by manyHungarians as a luxury at a timewhen the country is strugglingto keep down its budget deficitand one of the highest debt bur-dens in Europe.

"Football stadia should beself-financing!" read a banner ata recent student protest againstcuts in education spending.

"That money could pay forover 1,000 teachers instead ofone stadium with a question-able return," one student said.

Orban sees it differently.Speaking last month at a

youth football academy hefounded in his home village ofFelcsut, he said: "The future ofevery country is shaped by itsyouth, (which) reinforces theimportance of the governmentprioritising sport."

An amateur player withFelcsut even during his firstterm as prime minister in 1998-2002, the 49-year-old Orban isoften seen in the stands at hisfavourite club Videoton andrarely misses a national game.

He is the first Hungarianleader to focus on football sincethe communist state helped the

legendary Ferenc Puskas andhis "Golden Team" to the heightsof world football in the early1950s.

As communism ran out ofsteam, however, sports infras-tructure was left to rot and afterthe leap to capitalism in 1989,private investors failed to stepin, deterred by the meagre poolof TV and sponsorship moneyand near-empty stadia.

STADIA WILL BE RARELY IFEVER FULL

Kovesdy remembers goingto Budapest derbies in the 1960sthat drew crowds of 70,000.These days, Fradi, Hungary'sbiggest club, attracts just over5,000 fans on an average match-day.

"Why should anyone investwhen the new stadia will berarely if ever full," Gaby Kovacs, who runs the blogHungarianFootball.com, toldAFP.

Increasing average atten-dance at top division games to10,000 by 2018 from the current3,000 is part of a masterplandrawn up by the HungarianFootball Association (MLSZ),whose head Sandor Csanyi is aclose friend of Orban and one ofHungary's richest businessmen.

The prime minister has alsochannelled corporate moneytowards youth development, new clubs and training pitchesin return for tax breaks, andhiked the central budget alloca-tion for football, much of itdevoted to infrastructure.

Myanmar copsstruggle to adapt

After decades in the shad-ow of the military,Myanmar's ragtag

police force has found itselfthrust onto the security frontline

-- and under fire for failing tostop a wave of religious unrest.

Under the former junta thatruled the country also known asBurma for almost half a century,

any sign of unrest was quicklyquelled by soldiers.

But since a new reformistgovernment took power two

years ago, the job of maintainingorder has been largely left to

police who lack basic equipmentand only have about a year of

training."The police were never well-

equipped," said an officer with20 years in the force who did not

want to be named."Under the military govern-

ment, nobody cared about thepolice," the officer said. "Still

they don't care now, but we'rethe first to be blamed when

something happens even thoughwe tried our best to protect the

people."The challenges are immense

in a society testing the limits ofits new-found freedoms, includ-

ing the right to protest.A botched raid on a demon-stration at a copper mine in

November sparked an outpour-ing of anger after police used

phosphorus against protesters inthe harshest crackdown since

the end of military rule.Dozens of monks and vil-

lagers were injured in the inci-dent at the Chinese-backed

mainly on incompetence.

Some people have a flair for making trouble. When you knowthere's trouble brewing and when those responsible for

security take measures and devise steps to anticipate it, some LIPs(Less Important Person) relish in jumping right into the eye of thestorm, only to castigate their protectors for the consequences oftheir wilfulness. In the incident where Mamata Banerjee chose to

enter the office of the planning commission through the maingate where SFI students were waiting to protest when she would

show up is plain irresponsible on Didi's part. And then she goes onto say why must she adhere to police directives of entering the

premises through the VIP gate. Lucky for her, most of the heat wassuffered by her financial minister (let this be a warning to

followers of Didi). The reason that Didi gave was that she is an LIP.Everyone can see that she did this for political reasons. Just so thatsome justification can be had for the incidence of violence perpe-trated by Trinamool Congress goondas against students belongingto rival parties. And about her not being a beggar, there may besuggestions that are contrary to her claims, for the primary reasonfor her Delhi visit was to seek financial help from the Centre forher 'poor' state. Not heard of the saying 'Beggars can’t bechoosers', eh, Didi? If West Bengal languishes in dire need ofinvestment and the prosperity that follows with it, it is her fault. Her ‘fight for farmers’ has made her infamous for being anti-industrialisation and for this she’s only to blame.

Q: Why do you think it’s dif-ferent? Fishburne: Bryan Fuller’simagination and the way wework, the way in which he isable to take these alreadyexisting characters and enterinto their world and sort ofreshape it for us and make itfresh and new is what I thinkis going on.

Q: And what do you think itadds to the horror genre?Fishburne: I don’t know. Idon’t think it’s about addingto the genre particularly. Ithink it is in and of itself, itcomes out of a particulargenre, but I don’t think it canonly be defined as thatbecause at the same time, there’s this wonderful dramathat is being played out withour three characters. There’sthis wonderful sort of cat-and-mouse between WillGraham and Jack Crawfordand then Hannibal and WillGraham, and then Hannibaland Jack Crawford. That isoutside of the horror show.

Q: Is there anything you cantell us about your character? Fishburne: What can I tellyou? You will meet JackCrawford’s wife.

Q: Is it difficult for you toplay with your real wife? Isn’tit awkward?Fishburne: No, but she’sincredible though. And it isn’tawkward. Well, we haveworked together before.

Q: You receive a lot of scriptsevery day, so when you read

this story, what did you find?Fishburne: I liked it. A friendof mine approached me. ChrisBrancato was the guy thatapproached me and weworked together on a moviecalled Hoodlum about 16 to 17years ago. So when he said itwas really good, I was likeokay, and he was right, it’sreally good. And then I heardthat Mads and Hugh were castas Hugh as Lecter andGraham and I thought, okay, these are really, really goodactors and I would be happyto join them. And also, mywife is making a show here inToronto and so it gave me anopportunity to make a showhere in Toronto. So for all ofthose reasons, I said yes.

Q: With your character, hehas like an admiration orsomething? Fishburne: I think there is arespect. I think they respecteach other’s minds. JackCrawford heads up thebehavioural science unit. That is a pretty specific thing. That is talking about howpeople’s minds work andHannibal Lecter is a greatpsychiatrist, so these guys arereally interested in the work-ings of the human mind and Ithink they admire each otherfor that.

Q: Why do you think we areso attracted to characters likeHannibal Lecter? Fishburne: I thinkbecause we all have it inour hearts. I think thatit’s just a fantasy that is

expressed beautifully in thischaracter. Not only does hedo that, he does it with style. Q: What is the main challengefor you in a character likethat, if there’s one there? Fishburne: Just finding thebalance, making sure that weare honestly doing our jobstrying to find these guys, these people, that are doingthese horrible things, andthen having some kind of lev-ity to it, making sure thatthere’s enough humour in it,so that it’s not all like this. The biggest stuff right now isjust trying to figure out howto get this right and how toget the tone right so that theaudience wants to come back. That’s the challenge and thatis storytelling. What does itlook like, what does it feellike, does it make sense? We’ve got a bunch of charac-ters and we’ve got a bunch ofkillers and it’s all sort of inter-connected and so trying tomake sense out of it is quitedifficult.

Q: How did you find Gu i l l e -rmo as a director ?Fishburne: He was great; hewas so much fun. He’s awe-some. Him, David Slade,Michael Rymer, all the castthat we’ve had on the showhave been really good.

Q: Do you haveany favouritescenes so far? Fishburne: Ilove everyscene that Ih a v ep l a y e dw i t hH u g hD a n c y

and every scene that I’veplayed with Mads. I’m justreally — these guys are reallywonderful, they really are.

Q: So what’s next for youafter the show? Do you haveany plans? Fishburne: Promoting theSuperman movie this summer.

How many times havewe looked at KatrinaKaif and marvelled ather for her milky-

white complexion or ogled atHrithik Roshan’s rippling mus-cles. Many products in the cur-rent market might even promiseyou that and more. This cream, that lotion, this supplement andthat drink...

Acting is not just aboutdolling up and looking good infront of the camera. It requires alot of effort and a lot of sacrifice.Yet the burden of their personaand the fans does not allow thema moment’s rest. Take Bollywoodfor example. Every other weekyou will have shoots beingstalled thanks to actors beinginjured on the sets or taking ill. Why, the whole country withbated breath and eager ears fol-lowed the health condition ofAmitabh Bachchan and SalmanKhan when they were in hos-pital due to accelerated

health problems. Bipasha Basurecently revealed her CDs onexercises were inspired by herbattle with osteoarthritis.

Tollywood actress KritiKharbanda tells us about whatactresses have to face. “For me, itis the sun which seems to be mymortal enemy. I have been aller-gic to the sun since childhood, but do actors have a choice? Howlong can you work with onlysunscreens? Then shooting inextreme weather conditions isnot ideal for anyone, especiallyif you notice that the heroine ismostly clad in a chiffon sariwhile she serenades the hero insub-zero temperature.”

According to Kriti, skin prob-lems is what actresses are scaredof. After all, it’s your face whichis your bread and butter. Samegoes for models as well. Withirregular working hours, applica-tion of so many chemicals, thenputting and remove the layers ofmake-up, the numerous thingsbeing applied to the hair, the listof health problems just growslonger.

“People think an actor has arosy job, because all they have todo is smile for the camera ordance around the trees. Peoplewill be the first to comment thatthe actor is becoming fat or thatshe is aging so fast. But no oneknows the real reasons for thebag under her eyes or the wrin-kles on her skin are induced dueto long hours of standing on herfeet, exposure to the sun orshooting for 20 hours straight,”explains Kriti.

Dr Kiran Kumar A, dermatol-ogist and cosmetologist atMedwin hospital says, “For any-

one in the media industry, espe-cially those facing the cameralights suffer from a whole hostof problems and first signs ofthese manifest on the skin. Takefor instance models; actors atleast have the liberty to removemake-up and their shoots usual-ly consists of breaks, but modelshave no such luck. Firstly, theyhave to be figure conscious as aresult of which compromises aremade on lifestyle choices anddiets. Then the constant applica-tion of make-up and the variousother chemicals the face is sub-ject to, leaves the skin tatteredbeyond repair. Stress and pres-sure on the job is also seen onthe skin in the form of acne, pimples or bags under the eyes. Also medication cannot beapplied during the day sincetheir job does not allow it.Exposure to the sun is anotherdemon actors have to battlewith. Then frequent changes indiets. All this wreaks havoc onthe body in more ways thanone.”

WASHINGTON: Natural sub-stances extracted from green orunroasted coffee beans can pre-vent diabetes and improve glu-cose control, a new study hasfound.

US researchers found thatchlorogenic acids in coffee canhelp control elevated bloodsugar levels and body weightthat underpin type 2 diabetes.

Researcher Joe Vinson, whois with the University ofScranton in Pennsylvania, point-ed out that coffee, due to its pop-ularity, is a major dietary sourceof these substances.

The high temperatures usedto roast coffee beans to makethem suitable for use in coffeebreaks down much of the chloro-genic acids. Thus, the focus hasbeen on using concentratedextracts of green coffee beans.

“One large study indicated a50 per cent risk reduction forpeople who drank seven cups ofcoffee a day compared to thosewho drank only two cups a day,"Vinson said.

In a previous study, Vinsonfound that overweight or obesepeople who took such an extractlost about 10 per cent of theirbody weight in 22 weeks.

The new study sought todocument the effects of variousdoses of a commercial green cof-fee extract on the blood sugarlevels of 56 men and womenwith normal blood sugar levels.

They got a glucose tolerancetest to see how their bodiesresponded to the sugar. Thenover a period of time, they took100, 200, 300 or 400 mil-ligrammes (mg) of the extract ina capsule with water.

Follow-up glucose tolerancetests showed how the green cof-fee extract affected their responses.

The study was presented at aAmerican Chemical Society’smeeting in New Orleans. PTI

RESEARCH

Egg white protein canlower blood pressure

WASHINGTON: Here isanother reason why you shouldinclude eggs in your diet!

Egg white protein can loweryour blood pressure as effective-ly as low doses of medication, according to a new study.

“We have evidence from thelaboratory that a substance inegg white - it’s a peptide, one ofthe building blocks of proteins -reduces blood pressure about asmuch as a low dose ofCaptopril, a high-blood-pres-sure drug," said study leaderZhipeng Yu, of Jilin University.

Yu and colleagues fromClemson University, studied apeptide called RVPSL. Scientistspreviously discovered that thesubstance, like the family ofmedications that includes

Captopril, Vasotec andMonopril, was an angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE)inhibitor.

It has a powerful ability toinhibit or block the action ofACE, a substance produced inthe body that raises blood pressure.

They set out to further docu-ment RVPSL’s effects, using lab-oratory rats that develop highblood pressure and are stand-ins for humans in such earlyresearch on hypertension.

The results of feeding thesubstance were positive, show-ing that RVPSL did not haveapparent toxic effects and low-ered blood pressure by amountscomparable to low doses ofCaptopril.

“Our results support andenhance previous findings onthis topic. They were promisingenough to move ahead with fur-ther research on the effects ofthe egg white peptide on humanhealth," Yu said.

Yu noted that the researchwas done with a version of thepeptide that was heated to

almost 93 degrees Celsius dur-ing preparation - less than thetemperatures typically used tocook eggs.

He cited evidence fromother research, however, thategg whites may retain their ben-eficial effects on blood pressureafter cooking.

Yu believes that egg whitepeptides, either in eggs or as asupplement, could become use-ful as an adjunct to high-blood-pressure medication.

For now, he said people withhigh blood pressure should con-sult their health care providerbefore making any changes.

The study was presented ata meeting of the AmericanChemical Society in NewOrleans. PTI

SCRIBBLING PAD

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let’s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

DUBAI: Bahrain has beenrounding up pro-democracyactivists ahead of its controver-sial staging of the April 21Formula One Grand Prix twoyears after a bloody crack-down, Human Rights Watchsaid on Wednesday.

“Bahraini authorities arecarrying out home raids andarbitrarily detaining protestersin advance of the Formula 1Grand Prix weekend,” the NewYork-based watchdog said.

“These raids and detentionssuggest that officials are moreconcerned with gettingactivists out of circulation forthe Formula 1 race than withaddressing the legitimategrievances that have led somany Bahrainis to take to thestreets,” said HRW’s MiddleEast director Sarah LeahWhitson.

“The Bahraini authorities

have a responsibility to ensurethe safety of those attendingthe Formula 1 Grand Prix, butthat should not extend toarresting people for exercising

their legitimate rights to freespeech and assembly.

“Night-time raids of target-ed people by masked officerswho show neither arrest nor

search warrants appear intend-ed to intimidate them, theirfamilies and their supporters,”she said.

Opposition groups announ -ced Wednesday they wouldorganise a nine-day campaignof rallies and demonstrationsacross Bahrain under the slo-gan of “Democracy is ourright”.

The “peaceful escalationwill include a bundle of politi-cal and public activities... andan increase in protests andpeaceful rallies,” said the oppo-sition, which is led by Al-Wefaqmain Shiite formation.

The statement made nomention of the Formula Onerace as a motive for the protestswhich will begin on Friday.

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: As AugustaNational clings tightly to golfing tra-ditions, its rich and powerful mem-bership has tried to stay with thetimes in order to reflect changesbeyond the confines of the privateclub.

A club founded 80 years ago thatonce mandated black caddies and didnot invite a black golfer to theMasters until 1975 became the site ofthe first major won by a black playerwhen Tiger Woods captured the 1997Masters title.

Women’s activists were so upsetat the men-only status of AugustaNational that they staged a protestacross the street from the club duringthe 2003 event, when the Masterstelecasts dropped commercials overfears of action against advertisers.

But oh how the times havechanged. Augusta National wel-comed its first black member in 1990and its first women members,

financier Darla Moore and former USSecretary of State Condoleezza Rice, were unveiled last August.

“I hope the experience for Condiand Darla as members of our club hasbeen every bit as rewarding for themover the last eight months as it has

been for their fellow members,”Augusta National chairman BillyPayne said Wednesday.

“It’s just awesome. We have beenvery excited about it. These twoladies have been very special and ithas just been delightful.”

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: Ted Potter set thestage for the 77th Masters by winning the tra-ditional eve-of-tournament Par-3 Contest onWednesday, while tennis star CarolineWozniacki provided comic relief.

The 29-year-old American debutant card-ed a five-under 22 on the nine-hole par-threelayout, which lies adjacent to the famedAugusta National course.

That left him in a five-way tie for the leadalong with Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson,Nick Watney and Ernie Els. Potter thensealed a solo win on the second hole of theensuing playoff against just Kuchar andMickelson, the two others having opted out.

By winning, Potter invited the curse ofthe Par-3 contest to fall upon his head as, sin -ce 1960 when the family and friends knocka -bout was first held, no winner has gone on towin the green jacket four days later. The gla -mour team of the day, however, was undo -ubtedly Rory McIlroy with his tennis-play-ing girlfriend Wozniacki on the bag, whichproduced the unlikely scenario of autographhunters surrounding both player and caddie.

NEW YORK: World numberone Serena Williams and hersister Venus will join SloaneStephens and Varvara Lepche -nko on the US Fed Cup teamfacing Sweden later this mon -th, the US Tennis Associationsaid Wednesday. The moveensures the Williams sisters,

two-time defending Olympicwomen’s doubles championsas well as the 2000 SydneyOlympic winners, will be eli-gible to play in the 2016 Rio deJaneiro Olympics. SerenaWilliams, a 15-time GrandSlam singles champion, is alsothe reigning Olympic singles

champion. The Americans, allranked in the WTA top 30, willplay host to Sweden at DelrayBeach, Florida, on April 20-21,with the winner qualifying forthe 2014 World Group and theloser relegated with no chanceto win the trophy next year.“I’m really excited about the

team that we have,” US FedCup captain Mary Joe Ferna -ndez said. “We have great tal-ent and depth, which is a per-fect combination.” VenusWilliams is ranked 22nd, sixspots behind Australian Opensemi-finalist Stephens and fiveahead of Lepchenko. AFP

The Royal ChallengersBangalore, who are setclash with the Kolkata

Knight Riders at theChinnaswamy Stadium today, would be going into the matchwith a new found confidence.

In their previous match, theChallengers defeated SunrisersHyderabad with a convincingvictory. Skipper Virat Kohli’sperformance was outstandingas he lead his team from thefront hammering an unbeatenquickfire 93 off just 47 deliver-ies.

RCB’s victory against SRHcame after thier defeat in amatch which ended in a superover against the same oppo-nents.

While the Challengerswould go into their next matchfeeling positive and very confi-dent, the same cannot be saidfor the Knights who have man-

aged to draw blood on a singleinstance from the two matchesthey played this season.

KKR won the tournamentopener against the DelhiDaredevils with a comfortablesix wickets victory but failed torepeat the same when they lost

to Rajasthan Royals after beingbundled out for 125, falling 19runs short.

The Knights have players toboast off, with the likes of skip-per Gautam Gambhir, YusufPathan, Jacques Kallis, BrettLee and Sunil Narine makingtheir presence felt in the play-ing XI but if they fail to firetoday, then RCB is sure to runaway with the match.

The Challengers also have aline up which could intimidatethe opponents. The name‘Chris Gayle’ is enough to senda chill done the spines of therivals. And with players likeKohli, AB De Villiers andMuttiah Muralitharan amongthe others, the Challengers canbe counted as one of the bestteams in the Indian PremierLeague.

Pune Warriors must be theonly team in the history ofthe Indian Premier League

which has consistently under-performed in every season it fig-ured in the history of the tour-nament.

The Warriors clash withRajasthan Royals on their hometurf today but, keeping in mindthe past performances of PWI,they hardly look threateningagainst the Royals, a side whichcurrently has a 100% win recordthis season.

This will be the third seasonthat the Warriors have playedin, but this side has already beenmarred by its share of contro-versies including the ousting offormer Indian captain, SouravGanguly.

If Pune Warriors fail to post

a victory soon, then they wouldundoubtedly find themselvesstaggering at the bottom rungsof the points table and maybehave only Delhi Daredevils forcompany, a side, which surpris-

ingly failed to win any of thethree matches they have playedin this edition of the tourna-ment, so far.

The Royals from Rajasthanhave a completely contrastingstory to narrate. Under the cap-taincy of The Wall, RahulDravid, RR have performedconsistently and are currentlyplaced at the second spot on thepoints table, after MumbaiIndians. — AS
