About 100 buildingsthat violated theGHMC regulationswill be facing the ire

of the municipal authorities inthe next few days.

The town planning depart-ment from the list of violatorsprioritised and identified 100buildings in the first phase foraction.

The action against the build-ings, will be initiated inSeptember. It was found thatmany buildings were conduct-ing commercial activity withoutobtaining an ‘occupancy certifi-cate’. Hence they will be seized.

According to the GO 86

passed in 2006, there are differ-ent set of norms for the residen-tial and commercial buildings. Many buildings were construct-ed purely for the residentialpurpose, but without theknowledge of authorities havebeen turned into commercialspaces.

“We shall be taking actionagainst the buildings, which arefound to be residential innature, but have started com-mercial activities. Seizing themwould be the onlysolution,”said GHMC chief cityplanner, G V Raghu.

The official pointed out thatthe GHMC found that severalcomplexes were utilising theparking space for commercialpurposes.

This was a violation of thenorms set by the authority forall the buildings. At the time ofplanning the builders showspecified parking space butslowly the space is used forcommercial purposes.

“Within a few days we shallbe initiating action against theviolators. Most of these havebeen given notices,” Raghunoted.

In the recent days, there hasan increased number of applica-tions for obtaining ‘occupancycertificates’.

This prompted the officialsto inspect the sites. During theinspection it was found thatmany buildings in the Cityfailed to comply with the normsunder the GHMC limits.

The town planning department has prioritised andidentified 100 buildings to be demolished in the first

phase from a list of violators.

Nallahs (watercourse)are the veins of a city;block it and youchoke. When water-

courses are prevented it resultsin flash floods and vector-bornediseases. But who bothers?Avaricious people have been fill-ing up every bit of City water-courses with impunity. The latestbrazen encroachment of nallah ishappening in two places inMadinaguda. The end result isheart-rending. What the City’sforefathers had created thought-fully, some greedy elements areundoing. A 15-feet wide nallah isnow reduced to four feet!

A private builder has begunfilling the nallah with construc-tion debris, preparatory toappropriating the spot to buildflats and mint money. The intri-cate links the company has withGHMC officials concerned couldbe gauged from the fact that theSave Our Urban Lakes (SOUL)and ITMD (It’s Time to Make aDifference) have lodged not onebut several pleas to authorities, right from the GHMC commis-sioner to the revenue officials butin vain. After the formal com-plaints were lodged, they speed-ed up the construction works!

The encroachment of nallahhappened at two places inMadinaguda, one just immedi-ately after the Erla Cheruvu andother one near Kallam AnjireddyVidhyalaya. Rains make thewhole area hell as water has noway to flow. The pity is that peo-ple buying flats in the area arenot aware of the monsoon hell

they will be facing.According to AP Land anti-

Encroachment Act, 1905 thereshould be no construction nearwater bodies. The law is made anass by corrupt elements whodon’t think twice before damag-ing the City’s façade. And yetviolating the law is theCorporation itself. Despite bla-

tant violation of the Act, theCorporation gave permission

vide their file12082/HO/WZ/Cir-12/2012.What we gathered was that thecompany did not mention theplot is smack on the bank of anallah and the permission wasgranted without checking thespot or record. The deputy com-missioner who visited the spot islearnt to have asked the compa-ny to stop building but it had noeffect.

SOUL (Save Our UrbanLakes) a voluntary organisationhas been fighting for the lakessince 2010 through RTI and peti-tions. It is clear that the GHMCdid not want the building undernotice as several pleas fell on thewayside.

With its back againstthe wall, fightingthe slow fall of itspower supplies, the

State government is now consid-ering many uses of renewableenergy.

World Renewable EnergyDay came and went (August 20).The CM simply hosted a chatwith kids on the need for aug-menting renewable energy. Itshows the State is devoid of anymajor ideas.

There is no better commenton the State's apathetical attitudeto energy crisis than the fact thatAP does not have an energy min-ister. It has obviously aggravatedthe problem, technocrats pointout. Though various factors con-tinue to deter it from full-fledgedfunctioning, the promise ofrenewable energy is the onlylasting hope for the power-hun-gry State, they say.

In a report released by theministry of statistics, renewableenergy sources in the State haveshown a growth in the last twoyears. Biomass power, wasteenergy to power, wind power,SHP (Small Hydro Power), solarhave shown an increase in theinstalled capacities within theState. But they are far belowexpectation to make a mark.

Of the State’s total energyreserve sources, renewable ener-gy sources occupy 7.75 per centdistribution of the total 89,760MW capacity. Which means, theunconventional sources of ener-

gy that have long been sidelinedcontribute a total of 6596.4 MWcapacity annually. The growthtrends shown in the renewableenergy sector has been com-mendable what with a startlingincrease in the number of instal-lations of decentralised renew-able energy sources. But there isno concerted effort to bolster upthe effort.

Ideally the State should have20 per cent power from renewable energy, say knowl-edgeable sources.

The growth registered in theinstalled grid capacity from2009-2010 to 2011-2012 was 9.63per cent.

The estimated potential ofrenewable power systemsinstalled in the State speak vol-umes about the advantages:n Wind Power (MW): 5394n Small Hydro Power(MW):560n Bio Mass Power(MW): 578n Cogeneration Bagasse (MW):

300n Waste to Energy (MW): 123n Estimated Reserves: 6,955

n Distribution (%): 7.75.Total power capacity of

reserves (conventional and non-conventional): 89,760 MW.

So then why are renewableenergy sources not helping ourailing governments?

“The capital costs involved inproducing power from anysource is very high, more so forrenewable energy like solar, water.

“One MW takes an estimated`5 crore for generation andanother `5 crore for distributionand transmission. With solarpower, the individual costsinvolved are more. The old tarifffor waste supplied was `1,800per ton. Now the tariff rates haveshot up to `3,500 per tonne.Hence, the production value hasincreased which has made powercompanies nervous about theprospects of renewable energyproduction,” says Ram Mohan, project director at Nedcap.

But what the officialdomdoes not understand probably isthe fact that capital investment inrenewable energy is permanentassets while the highly subsi-dized conventional energysources are expendable.

Officials covertly admit thatgovernments seem to be alwayshand in glove with power com-panies that prefer exhausting theconventional energy resources inthe country.

“The Coalgate scandal is aperfect example. More so, peopleare unwilling to take the firststep in deviating from the exist-ing money making systems. Aslong as profit minded corpora-tions and corrupt governmentshold sway, there can be nochange in the scheme of things,”says an official from Nedcap.

Unsatisfied withthe type of

parents are optingto home school

TOM [email protected]

Giving up his successfulcareer as the head of amedical research firm tospend his days at home

reading from children’s story bookswas a tough choice for Chinesefather Zhang Qiaofeng.

But Zhang, one of a small butgrowing number of Chinese parentswho are turning their backs on thecountry’s rigidly exam-orientedstate-run school system, felt he hadno choice.

“China’s education system hasspecial problems,” said Zhang, awiry-looking graduate of one of thecountry’s top universities.

“I want my son to receive a styleof education which is much moreparticipative, not just the teachertalking while students listen. Most ofmy son’s time is set aside for follow-ing his interests, or playing.”

From a small apartment on theoutskirts of Beijing, Zhang teacheshis son Hongwu for four hours aday, in contrast to the six hours ofcompulsory classes the seven-year-old used to have to sit through at pri-mary school.

In the living room where heholds most of his classes, Zhang rat-tles through a long list of gripes withChina's education system, fromwhat he calls its “obsession” withexam results to an overly authoritar-ian teaching style.

China has made impressiveprogress in rolling out universaleducation across the country, withurban areas such as Shanghai claim-ing a perfect school enrolment rate. The United Nations says China has ayouth literacy rate of 99 per cent.

But many parents complainabout the focus on rote learning andpassing exams, which means thatchildren spend long hours in class.

Chinese children spend an aver-age of 8.6 hours a day in school, with

some spending 12 hours in the class-room, according to a 2007 surveyconducted by China’s Youth andChildren Research Center.

Lao Kaisheng, an education poli-cy researcher at Beijing NormalUniversity, said growing numbers ofChinese parents were demandingmore of a say in how their childrenwere educated.

“There’s been a rapid rise inhome schooling, especially in thepast few years,” he told AFP.

“Parents who home school tendto have more strict requirements fortheir children’s education, and feelthat schools won’t meet their chil-dren's individual needs.”

No official figures are availablefor the proportion of Chinese

parents educating their children athome, but Lao estimates it at lessthan one per cent.

One of the most prominent is XuXuejin, who moved from the boom-ing eastern Chinese manufacturinghub of Zhejiang to the picturesquebut sleepy southwestern town ofDali to provide a better environmentfor his two children.

“Chinese children are taught tocompete from a young age,” Xu toldAFP over the phone. “Students whocan’t compete are eliminated...there's too much pressure on them,”he added.

Xu, a Christian, said he wantedto give his children a more “Bible-centred” education than they couldget in school, a key motivating factorin countries such as the UnitedStates where home schooling isbecoming more popular.

An Internet discussion forum hestarted in 2010 for Chinese homeschoolers to swap classroom materi-als and discuss educational theorynow has more than 4,000 registeredmembers.

Worries about the legality ofhome schooling feature heavily onthe forum — Chinese law states thatchildren must be enrolled in schoolaged seven and receive compulsoryeducation for nine years.

“Chinese educational officialsare split on the subject,” said Lao.“Some want to force children backinto schools while some would pre-fer to legalise home schooling, which

is why there haven’t beenany new regulations.”

But questions over thelegality of home schoolinghave not deterred Zhang, who says he hopes his sonwill never return to aChinese school.

“My son’s Chinese andEnglish skills are muchhigher than other children

his age,” said Zhang, ges-turing at a bookshelf filledwith titles his son has read.

“I plan to teach my sonat home until he’s ready toattend university. I hope hecan attend a great universi-ty like Harvard, Oxford orCambridge, I’m 95 per centcertain he can achievethat.” AFP

NEW DELHI: Don’t write offthe tri-nation Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline as yet. WhenIranian President MahmoudAhmadinjead meets PrimeMinister Manmohan Singh inTehran today, he is expected topitch for fast-tracking the pro-ject, ahead of a meeting of ener-gy officials of the three countriesin Islamabad.

The joint working group onhydrocarbons comprises offi-cials of the energy ministries ofthe three countries.

The meeting is expected to

revive the stalled negotiationsover the ambitious $7 billionpipeline proposal that seeks tobring Iranian gas via Pakistan toIndia, reliable sources said.

Iran and Pakistan have

already sealed a bilateral dealon the pipeline, but India hastended to vacillate due to a hostof reasons. Iran, the most ardentbacker of the project, has how-ever not given up on India join-ing what Tehran projects as the“peace pipeline” connecting thecountries in a web of prosperity.

India has security concernsas the proposed pipeline passesthrough the volatile regions ofPakistan’s Balochistan province. The talks have also deadlockedover transport and transit feeswith Pakistan.

Apart from scepticism aboutthe economic and logisticalunviability of the pipeline, it isbeing opposed by the US, whichfeels it will amount to defeatingits larger strategy of isolatingTehran in the region.

In India, the pipeline hasbeen virtually written off, butthere are signs that it may berevived. Early this month, a par-liamentary panel asked thepetroleum ministry to “vigor-ously” pursue and settle allpending issues related to theproject as it would help addressthe country’s energy gap.

In a report, the standingcommittee on petroleum andnatural gas sought the earliestpossible start for the project.

Besides, India in May signedon to Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India(TAPI) gas pipeline. The gasfrom the pipeline is expected tostart flowing into energy-starved India in another fiveyears, official sources said.

India has signed the gassales-purchase agreement forthe $7.6 billion project that is tobegin in Turkmenistan and passthrough Afghanistan andPakistan before terminating inIndia. IANS

CHENNAI: Researchers at theIndian Institute of Technology,Madras have developed a noveldevice that can visually detecteven a single molecule of TNTused in the making of explosives.

Apart from national security, this ultra-sensitive and highlyselective detection method willhave applications in early identi-fication of diseases and in radia-tion prevention, the IITresearchers claim.

Chemistry professorThalappil Pradeep and his stu-dents Ammu Mathew and PRSajanlal reporated the principlebehind this device in the onlineissue of the leading chemistryjournal Angewandte Chemie onAug 22. They are now buildingthe device that may be put topractical use soon.

The detector works some-what like an alert traffic cop whospots a violator by simply look-

ing at the traffic signal. In otherwords, if the suspected samplebeing tested is clean, the detectorgives off a red glow on beingirradiated with light of a particu-lar wavelength.

But if the sample containsTNT, the signal changes to with afluorescence microscope hasbeen demonstrated by the IITteam to take place in the pres-ence of even just one molecule ofTNT — a lower limit that has not

been achieved by any detector sofar.

The TNT sensor uses a com-bination of gold and silver nano-particles, which are particles ofextremely small dimensions. Theentire detector system is just fourmillionths of a metre in size andits distinct star shape is of partic-ular advantage because it is easyto unmistakably identify thecolour change under the micro-scope, says Pradeep. Romney, a 65-year-oldmulti-millionaire business-man, will formally take upthe nomination with aprime-time acceptancespeech at the conventionon Thursday, the climax ofthree days of political the-ater at a packed-out con-vention center in Tampa,Florida.

Mitt Romney will tout a“positive vision forAmerica” when he acceptsthe nomination, a senioraide said.

“It will be a clear visionof a Romney presidency, and very much from hisheart about America, andwhy he wants to be presi-dent,” strategist StuartStevens told reportersaboard the Romney cam-paign plane on Tuesday.

Ann delivered her side of thebargain, blending a direct pitch towomen voters with a personal nar-rative about Mitt that dwelt largelyon their all-American love story, their wholesome family and hiswinning attitude.

“This man will not fail,” Annsaid, staring in determined fashionright at the lens in an addressbeamed live into American homesjust 10 weeks before voters go tothe polls to choose between himand President Barack Obama “Thisman will not let us down. Thisman will lift up America!”

events planned December 21 tomark the start of a new era for

humanity in the Mayan cosmol-ogy, Guatemalan National

Tourism Institute director PedroDuchez said.

“We have more than 95 percent of the rooms occupied,

tours sold, airline seats reserved. The interest keeps rising as we

get closer to December 21,”Duchez said.

Tourists are flocking toGuatemala because the Mayancalendar ends on December 21,

2012, an event that some peopleconsider an apocalyptic omen.

Tikal, one of the most impor-tant cities in the ancient Mayan

world, will be the site of the 2012“New Dawn for Humanity”

world summit. The event, which will take

place on December 20-21, isbeing organised by the

As the 16th summitof Non-AlignedMovement (NAM)kicks off in Tehrantoday, the world

watches with keen eyes theposition India will take in theglobal stage.

The NAM took birth due tothe Cold War when a host ofcountries, then newly-indepen-dent or in dire poverty, decidedthey could not afford to offendeither blocs. Though the NAMclaimed moral high ground, itwas primarily the desperationfor aid from both the blocs thatnecessitated the movement.

The NAM had strength innumbers, but its role was inconse-quential in international politicsas all international bodies, includ-ing the United Nations, werestructured to allow control bysuperpowers. The group of devel-oping countries were reduced tofence-sitters and in course of timemany drifted to either of the blocsand reduced their non-alignmentto lip service.

India too could not escapethis as the 1962 war with Chinamade it realise that applausefrom its NAM friends do nottranslate into political and mili-tary power. Realpolitik consid-

erations drove India into an all-weather friendship with SovietUnion and those bondsstrengthened our position.

With the end of the ColdWar and the emergence of a newworld order, the relevance ofNAM has come under question.Erstwhile Soviet satellite statesare now Nato members andChina has emerged as theuncrowned superpower.

However, Indian foreignpolicy continues to have onefoot in the bygone era and ishindering our transition from areg i onal player to a globalpower. From gas explorationdeals in disputed waters offVietnam to safeguarding ourterritory abutting the Line ofActual Control (LAC) — whichChinese patrols violate withimpunity — we are being coweddown by our giant neighbour.

The Communist state hasbeaten India in most commer-cial undertakings across theworld, especially in Africa, where the states were onceIndia’s strongest allies. Sheereconomic might and a ‘no-strings attached’ policy inregional politics have given thedragon a big edge.

Though nuclear-armed Ind -ia is considered a force to reckonwith and its growing economyis emerging as a big draw forinvestors, there are policy flawsthat undermine our credibility.

Pakistan continues to bleed

India through a thousandwounds, terrorism being theprimary weapon. From circulat-ing counterfeit currency to therecent SMS/MMS campaignthat triggered the exodus ofpeople of North East from SouthIndia, our estranged sibling’sunabated attacks reduce oureconomic and military might tomere paper tigers.

Our deafening silence ondecades of dictatorship across inWest Asia and feeble support forPalestine shows that we are stillincapable of pushing our agendain the global arena. We wereforced to scale down our supportto Aung San Suu Kyi after theBurmese junta began harbouringand arming anti-India militants.

In the last few years, India

has allowed the US to arm-twistit in several matters, includingdoing business with Iran. Thenuclear liability Bill has beenwatered down to appease possi-ble partners. Though they voiceprotest about its ‘stringent claus-es’, Indian follow-up of BhopalGas Tragedy has demonstratedamply that the rules would bemore of an irritant than mea-sures that would enforce liabilityor accountability.

With government after gov-ernment at the Centre crippledby alliance compulsions andgiving in to populist (andincredibly stupid) measures, wehave little offer to the rest of theworld as a power that has thewill to get its way — andunwilling to go all the way.

Justice at last?

The Supreme Court has rejected the plea of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab andupheld the death sentence awarded by the Bombay High Court in the 26/11

terror attacks. While many are cheering this decision, seen as the triumph of justice, itseems to be a little too late. The families of those killed in the attacks feel only hollow

satisfaction at the verdict. While the police spent lakhs to ensure the safety of Kasabafter his arrest, including putting him up in a special, separate cell, hardly any money

was spent on strengthening security along our coasts, the lack of which allowed Kasaband his fellow terrorists to enter so easily in the first place. After the 26/11 attack in

2008, security was stepped up, promises were made and new politicians were broughtinto power. But last year, Mumbai was again rocked by triple blasts, where bombs plant-

ed in crowded areas of the city killed around 30 people. Kasab might hang, but itseems that citizens’ safety will remain in limbo for a while.

The coming GOP cataclysm

Obama has not been a great presidentby any stretch of the imagination. Still,

come November and it’s alarmingly likelythat he will be replaced in the White Houseby flip-flop artiste Mitt Romney. WithRomney being confirmed as theRepublican nomination for the presidentialelections, it brings to the fore an increas-ingly radicalised party bordering on rabid. If the GOP gets control of the US, packyour bags and get ready for a ride that willborder on medieval.

At times, more than theactors, the charactersthat they portrayinspire you.

Sometimes you end up lookingup to some of these charactersand you see them different fromthe actor who plays them. Forcertain fans, Salman khan is different from Chulbul Pandeyof Dabbanng or Bodyguard'sLovely Singh.

However, once craze aroundthe movie dies so does the inter-est in characters. But now, fansare on a mission to immortalizethem by making pages onFacebook. Thus there are fan

pages on Veronica — a characterplayed by Deepika Padukone inCocktail; Vidya Bagchi — VidyaBalan's character in Kahaani andso on. And those in love withthese characters and who relateto them are liking them onFacebook.

"I am not a fan of the moviecocktail. But I am in love withthe character that Deepikaplayed in the movie. Apart fromher character there is nothingnew in the movie. It sends out awrong message too that a girlwho drinks and parties does notget the guy. But, I really likedthe strong, independentVeronica that she portrayed inthe movie. I didn't like it whenshe changed to a demure, tradi-tional girl in the second half ofthe movie. So after watching themovie I searched for Veronicafan page on Facebook and likedit." A Salman Khan fan ElishaJohn is of the opinion that attimes one ends up liking thecharacter more than the actor

himself. "I am a fan of SalmanKhan and like him in all movies. But I like him in some moviesmore than the other. ChulbulPandey in Dabbang was an arro-gant, corrupt cop while lovelySingh of Bodyguard was a loyal, hardworking bodyguard. Andthese characters are differentfrom Salman khan as a person."

While there are other fanswho feel that one need not relyon Facebook to immortalizecharacters.

One such fan, Sonal Khannasays, "There was a time beforeFacebook and there weremovies then too. Many of thecharacters of the movies of thatera are still etched in our memo-ry. If the actor renders a goodperformance and if that charac-ter manages to capture thehearts of the audience then thatis sure to stay alive in the mindsof the fans and one doesn't needFacebook to immortalize thesecharacters. There are many suchcharacters that captured thehearts of many in the past.Gabbar Singh of Sholay andRahul of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai arefresh in our memory in spite ofthe fact that these movies werereleased in a bygone era."

Getting into characterSometimes it’s not the plot or dialogue, the director or the actor but a singular

character that stays with you long after you're done watching a movie.

19SNORING

Not such a sound sleepSnoring in children needs to be closely monitored. If it is affecting the child’s sleep

pattern and their subsequent day-to-day activities, it’s time you paid your doctor a visit.

Meera was amusedwhen she saw hereight-year-old in adeep sleep, snor-

ing loudly. “Look at how she issleeping, she must be so tired,”she exclaimed. What initiallyhad amused and endeared herslowly became a cause for con-cern. She started to notice thather daughter was doing badlyat school and was unable toconcentrate. She then decidedto take her daughter to a paediatrician.

Snoring is said to be of twotypes — primary and snoringdue to obstructive sleepapnoea. While snoring is quitecommon in adults it can also beseen in children as young asone year old.

CAUSESAccording to Dr JaswinderSingh Saluja, ENT, Apollo hos-pital, “Snoring in childrencould be because of variousreasons such as cold, allergies, adenoids or even enlarged tonsils.”

Dr Sharmila Asthana, pae-diatrician, Apollo Hospital, says that snoring usuallyoccurs due to an obstruction inthe nasopharynx region. Ifsnoring occurs in children itcould be because of theenlargement of the tonsils. When the child is sleeping, these enlarged tonsils mayform an obstruction resultingin what is known as obstruc-

tive sleep apnoea. This willreduce the air flow. An abscessor a tumour could also be anobstruction but it rarely occurs. This obstruction results in diffi-culty in breathing because ofwhich oxygen does not reachthe brain and many vitalorgans. “Being overweight(due to consumption ofunhealthy and junk food) isalso a common cause of snor-ing,” says Dr Singh.

PROBLEMSRecently, numerous studieshave been conducted on theeffects of snoring in children.

According to a study publishedin the journal Paediatrics, “chil-dren who snore are more proneto behavioural problems. Thestudy concluded that childrenwho were transient snorers andpersistent snorers showedsome signs of bad behaviourwhen it comes to hyperactivity, depression and attention.”

A second study by aMelbourne sleep study groupsays that it “leads to develop-mental delays, behaviouralproblems, poor memory and alack of concentration.”Children who snore may in thelong run see their ability come

down, may be restless, wakeup tired and exhibit a loss inappetite. This occurs as oxygendoes not reach the vital organs.Dr Sharmila says, “Childrenwith sleep apnoea may wakeup startled or may also havedifficulty in breathing duringthe day.” If a parent brings achild to the doctor they will beable to diagnose if it is snoringand what the cause is. If thedoctor notices an enlargement, the child will be referred to anENT who will examine thecause of theproblem.

When it comes to children,Dr Singh says that it is impor-tant for treatment to be provid-ed. In case it is a cold than thechild is give anti-allergymedicines and in case of adenoids and tonsils based onthe situation treatment is provided. In cases which arenot improving, surgery mayalso be advised.

Dr Sharmila mentions thattonsils may be large in manychildren. It is only when it isforms an obstruction that one

needs to worry about them.

BERLIN: Most people infectedwith cytomegalovirus (CMV)carry it for a lifetime withoutany ill effects, but should thedormant virus become active, because of a weakened immunesystem, it could make you a dia-betic. New research by LeidenUniversity Medical Centre andUniversity of Tubingen MedicalSchools in Germany shows thatCMV infection is a significantrisk factor for the type 2 diabetesin the elderly.

Obesity, inactivity and agingare known to be tied to insulinresistance, one of the first signsof diabetes.

However, only a third ofthose with insulin resistance goon the develop type 2 diabetes, according to a Leiden andTubingen statement.

So what marks these peopleas different? Why do their pan-creas’ fail? Genetic and environ-mental factors are thought toplay a part but so also doesinflammation.

People with type 2 diabetesusually have raised levels of bio-logical markers for inflammationsuch as elevated C reactive pro-tein (CRP) and larger numbersof active white blood cells.

CRP, synthesised by the liver,is used mainly as a marker ofinflammation, which is how theimmune system respond to aninfection or a disease.

Chronic infections, includingCMV, can “stress” the immunesystem and when researchersfrom Leiden TubingenUniversities compared glucoseregulation with antibodies toCMV in over 500 participants ofthe Leiden 85-plus Study, theyfound that having CMV wasassociated with type 2 diabetes.

The researchers suggest thatCMV could be either actingdirectly on pancreatic cells orindirectly by causing theimmune system attacking thepancreas. IANS

Belly fat linked tohigher death risk

WASHINGTON: Peopleenvied for their normal weightsurprisingly face a higher deathrisk than the obese — if theycarry a prominent belly, accord-ing to latest research.

“We knew from previousresearch that central obesity isbad, but what is new in thisresearch is that the distributionof the fat is very important evenin people with normal weight,”said Francisco Lopez-Jimenez,senior study author and cardiol-ogist at the Mayo Clinic inRochester, Minnesota.

“This group has the highestdeath rate, even higher thanthose who are considered obesebased on BMI, a height toweight ratio. From a publichealth perspective, this is a sig-nificant finding,” said Lopez-Jimenez, according to a Mayostatement.

The study included 12,785subjects aged 18 and above

from the third National Healthand Nutrition ExaminationSurvey (NHANES III) and pro-vided a representative sampleof the US population.

The surveys recorded bodymeasurements such as height, weight, waist circumferenceand hip circumference, as wellas socio-economic status, physi-ological and lab measurements.

Subjects were divided intothree categories of BMI — nor-mal, overweight and obese —and two categories of waist-to-hip ratio in women and men.The mean age of subjects was 44

years and 47.4 per cent weremen.

The median follow up peri-od was 14.3 years. There were2,562 deaths, of which 1,138were related to cardiovascularissues.

The subjects with normalBMI but central obesity asdefined by the belly fat had thehighest death risk and the high-est death risk from all causesamong all subgroups.

The risk of cardiovasculardeath among those with bellyfat was 2.75 times higher andthe risk of death from all causes

was 2.08 times higher in normalweight obese people as com-pared with subjects with nor-mal BMI and normal waist-to-hip ratio.

“To our knowledge, it is thefirst study that evaluatednationwide estimates of deathin central obesity even in theabsence of obesity as measuredby BMI,” said Karine Sahakyan, cardiology research fellow atthe Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

These findings were pre-sented at European Society ofCardiology Congress 2012.

RESEARCH

Even if you are fit but have a tendency to pile on the flab around your stomach, youcould be at a higher death risk than those who are obese, found researchers.

What causes belly fatDiet: A diet that is rich inrefined sugar, trans fats andsaturated fats causes fat topile around a person’s middle.Sedentary lifestyle: Sittingfor long hours, which seemsto happen a lot these days,is also responsible for thattummy to bulge.Genetics: Some people arejust predisposed to belly fatdue to hereditary reasons.Posture: If you stand withyour stomach jutting out orslouch when you sit, it causes your stomach tobulge.

Smoking pot can lower your IQ: studyMarijuana-smoking teenagers are more likely to suffer from a low IQ, a new study has found.AMY SILVERSTEIN

Do your stoner friend’s theo-ries about governmentspies and Doritos sound

stupid? That’s because they proba-bly are. A new study has foundthat teenagers who smoke potbefore they turn 18 are at risk for a

lower IQ.The study, published in the

Proceedings of the National Academyof Sciences, took a massive, carefullook at teen pot usage. It followed1,000 people in New Zealand overa 20-year-period, HealthDayreported. The researchers found

that participants who startedsmoking at least once a weekbefore turning 18 and who contin-ued to smoke as adults suffered anaverage IQ drop of 8 points. Andthe damage was permanent.Adults who stopped as they grewolder failed to gain back the IQ.

However, there is some goodnews: it’s just the developingbrains that marijuana seems toharm. “I’m fairly confident thatcannabis is safe for over-18 brains, but risky for under-18 brains,” amember of the research team toldBBC News. GLOBAL POST

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let’s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

The ceremony has been cre-ated by artistic directors JennySealey and Bradley Hemmings,

More than 3,000 adults willbe among the cast, as well asover 100 children and 100-plusprofessional performers, while“Aerobility”, a British charitythat trains disabled people tobecome pilots, will perform afly-past, the BPA said.

finish third in the overall medaltable behind the United Statesand China.

Britain is also considered the“spiritual home” of theParalym-pics, as the first recog-nised sports events for athleteswith disabilities was held inStoke Mandeville in 1948.
