Hot drink isbecoming hotterthis winter. Whilethe police, obvi-

ously under instructionsfrom their political bosses, tighten noose over bars, pubs and restaurants, theAP Wine DealersAssociation has gonethrough the other door andsought favour on a 13-point demand whichincludes exclusion of policein the liquor shops checks.

The demands givesomething to the govern-ment to think about thisNew Year. If the govern-ment accepts all of them, the wine dealerswill have a greatrun (see box). The dealerswanted to dis-own any respon-sibility of thosebelow 21 yearsbuying liquor.

“Do we haveto ask for thebirth certificateof a youngsterwho comes tobuy a bottle? Is itour job?” asks awine dealer.Another irksomeclause not clari-fied so far is howfar the God’sabode must befrom a wineshop.

The mem-bers of the asso-ciation led by itsgeneral secretaryD VenkateshwarRao met theExciseCommissionerSameer Sarmaand put forth thedemand.

And, there isa hidden blud-geon on thedemand chart. Ifthe shops areforcibly closed, the fee paid bythe sellers has tobe reimbursedfor the period.

This is aimedat political par-ties that forceclosure of shopsfor protests, bandhs and har-tals. “Whyshould we payfor closedshops?” is thequery of theassociation.

Wine dealers’ New Year gift to govtThe 13 Hot demandsn Shop owners who get the excise

license must also get licenses forgodowns.

n If a consumer below 21 years of agepurchases liquor the penalty should belevied on the faulty consumer and notthe shop owner.

n The shops should be allowed to beopen by 7 am for cleaning. Presentrules allow them to open by 10 am.

n If the shops are forcibly closed, thenthe fee paid by the sellers has to bereimbursed for the period.

n The owner of the venue (if rented)should not have any right to come inthe way of the renewal of the shop.

n The distance of the liquor shop from aTemple, Masjid and the Church has tobe clarified properly. At the same timethe definition for a Hospital should befinalised.

n The venue should not have compul-sions, like size of rooms, roofs, heightof walls, privacy factor etc. The outerwall compulsion should be highenough so that the public cannot seeconsumers.

n Unnecessary bank guarantees shouldbe restricted.

n All the retail and bar licenses shouldbe allowed to be converted to Exciselicenses.

n The MRP should be decided in such away that the retailer gets a good mar-

gin to take care of all expenses.

n Some retailers stack and sell belowpar putting other sellers at hardship, this should be avoided.

n The license should be given with every10,000 mandal population as basis.

n A license holder must be able to selland serve the liquor in the samepremises. It has to be Bar cum retail(FL23) License.

The association leader Rao toldPostnoon that they wanted the pre-2005system to be brought back where alicense was given on a fee rather thanthe bidding system. Before 2005 thebase fee used to be `16 lakh, now it hasgone up to `1 crore. “This has led tounhealthy competition.”

Not too long ago billboardsdotting roadsides in theCity would flaunt beautiful

women selling all sorts of products– furniture, phones, cars andeverything under the sun. However, the scene seems toundergoing a change these days. The focus seems to be movingaway from these products to polit-ical parties. Everywhere along theCity roads you’re bound to findposters glorifying leaders fromvarious political parties and theirmottos, or some wishing them aHappy Birthday or congratulationthem for some achievement or theother – clear signs of the politicosgearing up for elections.

Although there’s still sometime before elections kick off, par-ties are making sure that theymake an impression on the gener-al public in advance. Visibilityseems to be the keyword for theseparties. However, there’s a flip sideto this political drama. Whileadvertising on billboards isacceptable, many political parties

are taking the easy way out andplacing their banners and flexiesbetween dividers, under flyovers,on walls and traffic junctions, causing a huge inconvenience tocommuters.

“We all want to convey seasonsgreetings to citizens. The govern-ment does not give us space forthis so we find this as the bestmedium to communicate” saysPrajal Nagesh, Cantonment incharge from TRS.

However, most of these ban-ners and flexies are illegal andbeing placed without the permis-sion of the GHMC. “Parties need totake prior permissions and pay therequired fee to place their banners. Some banners that parties put upare with permission but weremove the ones that have notsought prior permission. We keepa constant check and at night weremove the unauthorised ones,”says K Narsing Rao, assistant engi-

neer, advertising wing GHMC.However, citizens complain

that these banners are causingproblems especially while driving.“It’s absurd that political partiesare placing their banners and flex-ies all over the City. A huge bannernear Big Cinema makes drivingdifficult for motorists. When I wasdriving past I could not see whatwas on the other side,” says PavanKumar, a marketing executive.

Traffic police department has

taken note of several such bannersand is discarding them regularly.“It’s purely the GHMC’s work tokeep a watch and remove unau-thorised posters but few areplaced in such places that theyobstruct traffic. Recently, a fewaccidents have also taken placedue to these banners,” says CVAnand, Additional Commissionerof Police (traffic).

Senior politicians analyse andquip that this is the best way to getpublic attention and stay in thelimelight. This form of publicityworks best for local and small levelpoliticians.

“These days everybody wantspublicity and this is the cheapestmedium to advertise. Secondlysmall level politicians find this asthe best medium to gain publicattention. We have a culture ofbeing loud and in a desperateneed for publicity they resort tocheap tactics. During electionssuch things are common but oth-erwise it’s very inconvenient.Citizens should pressurise theGHMC only then will they dosomething,” says JayaprakashNarayan, MP, Lok Satta party.

GV KRISHNAIAH, AP Hotels Association President

We welcome the steps beingtaken up by AK Khan for

road safety and curbing drunkendriving. I think bars and pubsshould ensure the safety of cus-tomers and only financiallly welloff individuals should visit theseplaces. But, rules like usage ofbreathalysers that are expensivefor bars should be removed.

PRADEEP DUTT, Secretary, Hyderabad StarHotels Association.

We will extend our coopera-tion in their endeavour to

prevent accidents and drunkendriving. Majority of the rules aredevised to keep a check on smalland medium level bars andrestaurants and not star hotels. But we still object to rules likecancellation of licenses.

T-TDP leaders M Narasimuluand Erraballi Dayakar alongwith 100 TDP workers were

today arrested as they threatened tocommit suicide for the sake ofTelangana at the Telangana mar-tyrs’ memorial before the Asse mbly.

Brandishing a rope Narasim -ulu invited the TRS leader KChandrasekhar to join him incommitting suicide for the causeof T State. The TDP team ridiculedKCR for trying to appropriate theT State issue is if only he cared. "Iam ready to hang myself, If youhave guts please come to sacri-fice, KCR,” Narasimulu declaredamid hooting and howling fromTDP workers.

Addressing the gatheringNara simulu and Teegala KrishnaReddy said KCR was like the for-mer chief minister Chenna Reddywho became chief minister twiceusing the Telangana issue.

Narsimulu charged KCR withtrading in Polavaram and ofamassing huge sums of money. Hewarned people that Telangana willnot be a reality if people left it to

KCR. He said the TRS leader hadbargained with PM and Sonia forPolavaram and “sold the interestsof Telanagna.”

On the other hand, the policewere expecting some Telanganaactivists to troop in at the Gun Parkwhere the TDP leaders were creat-

ing chaos. But after seeing thepolice arresting Narsimula andDayakar under preventive mea-sures for maintaining law andorder in front of the Assembly, theydesisted. They demanded that KCRshould have taken an all-partyteam to the prime minister for

negotiating Telang ana instead oftrying to work out solo.

On the other hand, someTelangana MLAs criticised the actof T-TDP leaders as slavery ofChandrababu Naidu and theywere not serious about Telangana.

They said that they are not both-ered about the allegations of the T-TDP leaders.

KCR was at his residence inBanjara Hills after a long gap. Hecame from his farmhouse that is onthe outskirts. KCR has been sile ntsince two weeks. He paid scantattention to the TDP challenge.

no Christmas is complete withoutcarol singing. Carols were first sungin Europe thousands of years ago,but these were not sung for justChristmas. They were pagan songs, sung at the Winter Solstice celebra-tions as people danced round stonecircles. The word Carol actuallymeans a dance or a song of praiseand joy. Carols used to be writtenand sung during all four seasons, butonly the tradition of singing them atChristmas has really survived.

There are old and new carolsinging groups in the city. TheTabernacles, a well known gospelsinging group in the Twin Cities arethe oldest carol group in the city. Thisyear they had their 44th AnnualChristmas Concert at Rail Kalarang,Bhoiguda, Secunderabad on the22nd of this month. The ConductorMr. Kenneth V Gibson lead the group

and presented Western Classical car-ols from Mozart, Beethoven, Haydnand other contemporary Christmascarols.

Ms Rhoda Vijaya, Secretary ofThe Tabernacles said that every year

The Tabernacles donated the pro-ceeds of the concert to a charity. Thisyear too the proceeds/donationsreceived went towards the cancerpatients of ‘Pain Relief & PalliativeCare Society’. Frederick Michael,

Convener, The Tabernacles said “Ourcarol singing for this Christmas hascome to an end and we are all set forthe midnight prayers and to cele-brate the Christmas”. EbenzerDevaraj, Director of Youth for Christsaid, “Every year we wait for the holymonth of December. We had alreadysung at more than hundred house-holds in Twin Cities. St Thomas SPGhad concluded their carol singing onDecember 22. Our group consists ofyoungsters between the age group12-15 years. Our carols are sung inEnglish and Tamil.” Carol singingmight have come to an end but thereare a lot of other festivities to lookforward to.

HYDERABAD: Event manage-ment industry is growing by leapsand bounds in the City. Be it theengagement function of RamCharan Teja and Upasana or be ita corporate congregation in theHyderabad International Conv -ention Centre, it’s the event man-agers who design the virtualscreenplay to the minute detail.

Almost every business usesthe services of event manage-ment industry. The eventmanagement industry is seenas a sunrise industry in theservice sector.

Main reason for the growth inthe industry is sudden spurt inlive entertainment shows, corpo-rate events like product launchesand dealers meetings, exhibi-tions, conferences, and seminars. The market for event manage-ment in India is growing at 25 percent and will reach Rs 2,300 croreby 2012. As of now, it is a Rs 1,800-

crore market. It is also movingfrom unorganised frame work toan organised market, said RakhiKankaria, Director, RachnoutsavEvents. The event market size inHyderabad is estimated to bearound Rs. 250 crore to 300 crore.

Talking about the industrychallenges, she said that industrywas not getting trained manpower. Education is unable toprovide the quality humanresources for the event manage-ment industry.

English language skills, practical exposure and industryknowledge are lacking in themanpower. “To fulfil the needand to address this issue, we aregoing to start a professionalinstitute with three courses onevent management and wed-ding planning.”

Event management is notjust a few days’ business. It isspread throughout the yearwith the corporate events.Indian marriages are quitelong. They start from wedding

card and ends with first night.Sometimes, this all may takeup to six months, sagai sebadhai tak.

On the difference betweenmiddleclass wedding and highprofile wedding, she said, “Wetake care of every detail fromcard design to delivery, logisticsfor the invitees in high profilewedding. This all comes in apackage. With the middleclassmarriages, we promise thateverything goes smoothly at thevenue. The card distributionand all other events have to betake care by the customer itself.Middleclass wedding holds 27per cent share of the total wed-ding turnover.”

Technology is the key forwedding planning — LED dis-plays to Mehndi functions andwebcasting solutions for the mar-riages to enable guests and par-ents from different parts of theworld to watch the event. “Thecorporate events generatearound 70 per cent of theturnover, and the rest 30 per centis generated by wedding plan-ning. However, weddings are big-ger in volumes,” she said.

HYDERABAD: India will be a developednation by 2050. Its growth is driven byenergy. If India has to become a devel-oped state, it has to increase its per capitaelectricity consumption manifold. At leastsix to eight times more energy than what itconsumes now. That is from 1,80,000 MWto one million MW, said R Chidambaram, principal scientific adviser to the Centredelivering the Yarlagadda Sreeramulueighth endowment lecture on ‘India’sTechnology Needs: Nuclear to Rural’ hereon Friday.

“According to the United Nations, theHuman Development Index (HDI) is a rel-ative measure of life expectancy, adult lit-eracy, and per capita gross national prod-uct. In my opinion, per capita grossnational product and life expectancy canbe replaced by per capita electricity con-sumption. If we produce more energy, more goods will be produced. The energywill not only help industries and urbanconsumption but also improve the vil-lages to a great extent by providing betterhealth care, better water supply and sani-tation which in turn increase lifeexpectancy. Gender equality and reduc-tion of infant mortality rate can only beachieved by female literacy,” Chidam -baram envisioned.

India needs all kind of energies.Developed countries can have a relaxedview on establishing nuclear powerplants. “But countries like India andChina, which have huge energy require-ments, have to develop their nuclear pro-

grammes rapidly. It can be the icing on thecake for the developed world, but for Indiait is bread and butter,” he added.

Talking about the Kudankulam planthe said, “It can produce 900 MW of elec-tricity which can be supplied to four mil-lion people in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere. There should not be any worries on safety. There are16 such reactors operating with-in Russia and nine outside. Two such reac-tors recently began commercial opera-tions in China. The United Kingdom isdeveloping eight reactors. Abu Dhabi isalso developing nuclear reactors with thehelp of South Korea. India has an excellenttrack record with nuclear safety becauseof its trained operational engineers andthe strong regulations that are in placehere.” He was confident that theKudankulam nuclear plant will beginoperating soon.

Aftershocks rattled New Zealand’sChristchurch on Saturday, a day aftertwo quakes sent terrified people flee-

ing into the streets, 10 months on from adevastating quake that claimed 181 lives.

The strongest aftershock, a shallow 5.1magnitude tremor, struck early Saturday6:37 am local time, just 21 kilometres (13miles) from the earthquake-devastated city.

It was part of a swarm of 25 earthquakesof magnitude 3.0 or stronger to shake the

already fragile city overnight, and sets up atense Christmas period for Christchurchresidents. Two shallow quakes of magnitude5.8 and 5.9 and a series of aftershocks struckon Friday as malls were packed with after-noon Christmas shoppers, sending stocktumbling from the shelves and turning thefestive mood to panic.

The quakes, which temporarily closedthe international airport and disruptedcommunications, were the latest in a seriesthat began 15 months ago and havedestroyed much of the inner-city.

Local news media reported people flee-ing in fear as the quake and a first wave ofaftershocks rattled the city, leading to lique-faction and flooding in some suburbs worsthit by previous earthquakes.

“You can’t underestimate the ongoingstress this has created for people,”Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said, whilePrime Minister John Key described theimpact as ‘frightening and disheartening’for the beleaguered residents.

Two huge explosions tore throughthe Syrian capital Damascus, leav-ing dozens dead and up to 100wounded in an attack which offi-

cials and state television blamed on al-Qaida suicide bombers.

Opposition activists however pointedthe finger at the regime of Bashar al-Assad,accusing it of plotting the blasts to rein-force its narrative that, rather thanprotesters seeking democratic reform, thenine-month uprising is being driven byIslamists bent on chaos.

The car bombs were detonated shortlyafter the arrival of Arab League observersin Damascus to monitor the regime’spromise to end its bloody crackdown onthe protest movement. It is the first timelarge bombs have been detonated in thecapital since the revolt began in March.

Officials said around 40 people, mostlycivilians, were killed. “We said it from thebeginning, this is terrorism. They arekilling the army and civilians,” said the

deputy foreign minister, Faysal Mekdad. But opponents of the regime were

quick to question this. Omar Idilbi, amember of the opposition group theSyrian National Council, described theexplosions as ‘very mysterious’ becausethey happened in heavily guarded areasdifficult to reach by car.

“The presence of the Arab Leagueadvance team of observers pushed theregime to give this story in order to scarethe committee from moving aroundSyria,” he told the Associated Press.

It was also “an attempt to make theArab League and international publicopinion believe that Syria is being subject-ed to acts of terrorism by members of al-Qaida,” he said.

The blasts appear to have caused sig-nificant damage to two security buildings, the state security directorate and a branchof military intelligence, in the heart ofDamascus, where an advance party of 13Arab League observers arrived on

Thursday. State TV showed scenes of muti-lated bodies, burnt-out cars and damagedbuildings in the upmarket district of KfarSousa.

Syrian officials have insisted for manymonths that al-Qaida inspired groups areconducting sectarian attacks on membersof the country’s ruling Allawite sect andother minorities. State media commenta-tors repeated that line, while broadeningthe list of potential culprits for the bomb-ing to include Israel and the US.

Ahead of the Arab League delegation’sarrival, Syrian foreign minister WalidMuallem predicted that the regime’sclaims would be vindicated.

“There are many countries in the worldwho don’t wish to admit the presence ofterrorist armed groups in Syria,” he said ata press conference. “They will come andsee that they are present.”

State media had warned earlier thisweek that Syria had received informationfrom Lebanon about an imminent attack.

Wenger will see his attack-

However, Wenger has yet tomake a decision on Henry andwill use the Christmas period tomull over the merits of seeingthe forward back in an Arsenalshirt.

“That’s why I haveChristmas Day off - I have tothink about that,” said Wenger.

“The first of January is thevital date for us. We have sevendays to make decisions and Iwill make a decision in the nextseven days on players.”

MELBOURNE: Australia lookset to go in against India with arevamped top order for theBoxing Day Test, with openerEd Cowan Saturday named tothe team alongside big-hitterDavid Warner and ShaunMarsh.

In-form newcomer Cowanwas one of three additions to a13-man Australian squadnamed last week for theMelbourne Cricket GroundTest beginning Monday, afterbatsmen Phillip Hughes andUsman Khawaja were dumped.

The two other additions --Marsh and bowler BenHilfenhaus — also made thefinal eleven but all-rounderDan Christian failed to makethe cut.

"I'm confident we've gotthe best eleven to win this Testmatch in these conditions,"skipper Michael Clarke said.

"I can use Michael Hussey,Ricky Ponting and myself tobowl a few overs. David Warnercan bowl a few legspinners. Ifeel we've got the right elevento give ourselves a chance ofwinning this Test match.

"Dan Christian offers a lotwith both bat and ball butunfortunately for him rightnow we can't fit him into theeleven."

Clarke backed the selectionof Hilfenhaus to spearheadAustralia's pace attack.

"His control, he's a verygood new ball bowler. He canbowl long spells. He's had suc-cess against India as well.

There's a few reasons wedecided to go with Hilfy," hesaid.

Australia, fresh from ahumiliating defeat to lowlyNew Zealand in Hobart thismonth, will be missing all-rounder Shane Watson who isinjured (hamstring/calf) whilefast bowler Ryan Harris wasnot named in the squad.

Coach Mickey Arthur saidHarris and Christian would"stay around the group" untiltheir Twenty20 Big BashLeague commitments took

them away later in the week."And Shane Watson will

also be with the group inMelbourne in order to buildworkloads and hopefully be fitfor consideration for selectionfor upcoming Test matches,"Arthur said.

India, ranked two placesabove Australia at second inTest cricket, are aiming to wintheir first series Down Underafter failing in nine previoustours over 64 years.

Their batting line-upboasts two of Test cricket's

greatest run scorers -- SachinTendulkar (15,183) and RahulDravid (13,094), withTendulkar bidding for his100th international century onthe Australian tour.

The Australian team is intransition with several inexpe-rienced players alongsideRicky Ponting, 37, and MikeHussey, 36.

Warner has just two Testsunder his belt while Marsh, who has suffered back trouble, has three.

Clarke said he was confidentMarsh was fit to play despite hisback problems.

"His back is fine," he said."He's taken it easy yesterdayand today to make sure he'sfully recovered and ready to gocome Boxing Day.

"I'd imagine you'll seeShaun out here tomorrow fac-ing some bowlers or at leasthaving some throwdowns. He's100 percent ready to go."

It is hoped that right-hand-ed Cowan will add some ballastto the top order. The 29-year-oldhit 109 for the Chairman's XIagainst India along with twocenturies in this season'sdomestic Sheffield Shield andone for Australia A against thetouring New Zealanders.

MELBOURNE:Last BoxingDay, the biggest day onAustralia's cricket calendar,Andrew Strauss sent theAustralians in on a pitch witha little bit of juice in it. Theydidn't last 50 overs. ChrisTremlett and James Andersonskittled the Australians for 98.They never recovered,England secured the Asheswith that victory, and theArgus review was commis-sioned in the weeks that fol-lowed.

Fast forward 12 monthsand the Australians have beenbowled out for 47 in aninnings against South Africa. They have lost a Test to NewZealand in challenging condi-tions at Bellerive Oval. Theirbatsmen continue to fail. OnlyDavid Warner and ShaunMarsh, the two newest mem-bers of the top order, haveaveraged more than 40 in the

past year. And now they are back at

the MCG. It is still the biggestday on Australia's cricket cal-endar. They are still strugglingagainst the moving ball, thereason behind their battingcamp over the past few days.Zaheer Khan and IshantSharma are skilled movers ofthe ball in the air and off thepitch. But the captain Michael

Clarke still believes his bats-men should play their naturalgame, even if they are sent inunder cloudy skies.

"I think it's important if webat first that we play our natu-ral game," Clarke said. "I thinkyou have the confidence toback your own ability. We'vedone plenty of work so it's notfrom lack of training ... Ourpreparation has been spot on.Now it's about getting outthere and enjoying everyminute of it. I have no con-cerns if we bat first on thatwicket and there's a bit ofmovement. I'm confidentwe're ready for it.

"I make no bones about it,we've had extra time as a bat-ting unit because we knowwe've got to get better at fac-ing the new ball if there's a bitin the wicket. We want toimprove.”

Dallas readyto rumble

LOS ANGELES: The much-anticipat-ed NBA season is in our midst and inthe short build up to a rushed seasonmany faces have switched teamsincluding those on the reigning cham-pion Dallas Mavericks.

"I think our goal cannot be to be thebest team right now," Germany's DirkNowitzki said. "Our goal is to get betterand also better game to game.Hopefully by April, May and June wecan be back to where we were last year."

After almost having to cancel theseason, the league and players unionagreed on a last-minute collective-bar-gaining deal which resulted in anabbreviated 66-game schedule, begin-ning Christmas Day.

Because of the lockout teams havehad a little more than two weeks andjust two exhibition games to get ready.

"We weren't really blessed with thatmuch time to do it any different unlessyou wanted less games, so it kind of iswhat it is," said Los Angeles Clippersnew guard Chauncey Billups.

"The good thing about it is we're notthe only team that's dealing with it;everybody is. All the things we're com-plaining about, they're dealing with ittoo."

Dallas caught fire last year and beatthe Miami Heat for the NBA title butthey have a big hole to fill with the lossof Tyson Chandler and Jose Barea.

Fortunately their core playersremain the same and will be pleased toaccept their championship rings infront of the Heat at home in one of fivegames on opening day.

That's why Dallas is one of fiveteams, including the Chicago Bulls, theHeat, Memphis Grizzlies andOklahoma City, who have the bestchance at winning the title.

Not included in that list for the firsttime in several years is the Los AngelesLakers who actually helped strengthenthe Mavericks by giving them LamarOdom in a panicked trade after theleague nixed the Chris Paul deal to theLakers.

The trade was heavily criticized byLakers star Kobe Bryant who shouldhave more to say when Los Angelesfaces the Mavericks for the first timethis season on January 16.Without leg-endary coach Phil Jackson, the often-injured Andrew Bynum suspended forthe first four games of the season, andBryant suffering a right wrist injurybefore the season has even begun, itseems the only way the Lakers can go isdown. TALK BACKORR accidentsThough I sympathise with the parents ofthose kids who died in Outer Ring Roadaccidents, the equal share of blame theyshare cannot be ignored. Theyoungsters are pampered withmoney and vehicles andallowed to follow a luxuriouslifestyle but are not taught thebasic responsibilities they mustfulfil — for themselves and oth-ers. Why do parents buy all thosepowerful vehicles for their kidsknowing well ahead that they will be usedonly for dangerous reckless driving? A littleprudence can avoid disasters.

Check autorickshawsThe traffic police have been launching sev-eral initiatives to promote road safety but

one thing that goes unchecked inthe city is the exto rtion by autodrivers. They refuse to go by meteror use tampered meters. Theyrefuse to take passengers forshort distances, especially withinminimum charge, unless a muchhigher amount is assured. Manyof them have also scratched

out the details of police helplinesthat have to be mandatorily carried whereit’s visible to the passenger. The copsshould address basic issues the commonman the most. Vasundhara Vijay

Yousufguda

Idiotic directiveBy issuing a directive to the bars holdingthem responsible for drunk driving of theircustomers, the city cops have added anoth-er feather to the cap of theirincompetence. What willcome next, prosecution of par-ents for children bunkingclasses? The police should stickto their job of cracking downon law breakers rather than goaround terrorising businessmen who shellout lakhs for liquor permits. Irresponsibleindividuals must be made to pay for theirviolation. The police need to understandthat these initiatives will do more harmthan good. Robert Samuel

Trimulgherry

Arrogance of policeHow can the police come out with suchinstructions to bar owners, holding themresponsible for drunk driving by their cus-

tomers? Already the cops are col-lecting enough bribes from themunder one pretext or the other. This new rule will only addanother tool to extort money. Moreover, there is every likeli-

hood of business rivals taking advantage ofthis rule to destroy the business of theircompetitors. I think the good publicity fortheir campaign against drunk driving hasgone to their heads and they are acting likethis.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, 201114Fair, free and forthrightComment

I’ve got some really cranky neighbours. The family, living across the road in a tinycottage-like home, looks picture-perfect— but only from a distance. I can hear

the couple’s roaring fights every other day.The lady of the house is grumpy all the time, although I get to see little of her. When shewalks outside the main door to dump thewaste in the trash can, she’s always angryabout something. The husband hardly eversmiles, too — even when he’s taking his sonto the club for a game of badminton onSunday mornings.

But in winter, as the nip in the air becomesstronger and one can feel the cheer ofChristmas, Mr and Mrs Grumpy transforminto Mr and Mrs Smiley. They smile at us,their neighbours, who they ignore or lookthrough the rest of the year. What’s more, they even send across a Santa Claus-size bagof goodies with kalkals, sweets, fried yum-mies and homemade cake.

They’re Christians and this is a wonderfultime of the year for them. But across thestreet, in a three-storeyed Gujarati home inthe corner, there’s caroling and the sounds ofmerrymaking almost every evening leadingup to Christmas. They’re Hindus but theylove this festival and their kids insisted ondecorating a tree and celebrating. So theydid, in style.

I know that sentiment all too well. After all,my own excitement for Christmas comesfrom my schooldays when we sang carols, decorated a Christmas tree, exchanged gifts, put up a skit about Jesus and felt emotionalon Christmas Day. It was one of the biggestparties before we closed for winter vacationto reopen in a brand new year.

It’s tough to escape the Christmas moodwherever one turns. My sister turned up inChristmas colours a few days ago for anoffice party, where they would exchange gifts

in the Secret Santa game. Every person in theoffice, irrespective of faith, participates inthe game and there’s fun, laughter, cheer andlove. This probably was what Christmas wasmeant to be.

Festivals, especially in urban India, haveincreasingly evolved as one-India celebra-tions. People of all faiths participate inGanesh Chaturthi puja, Id celebrations andChristmas. It might be the best way to survivea culturally diverse and demanding society —to open our hearts and accept the happy andbright.

Cultural oneness is also the answer to allthose who are trying to polarise society. Theseindividual acts of faith have begun to mattermore than the attempts of those with a funda-

mentalist outlook to drive home the pointthat their faith is better.

With increasingly universal values, Indiansare less finicky about religious differencesand are beginning to realise that they can cre-ate a belief system that suits them by choos-ing the best from everything that’s available. It’s fusion at its very best.

The urban cultural potpourri is makingroom for more and more. Think Halloween,Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. Whenthese western influences reach Indian shores, they mutate into local celebrations with thatunique Indian touch. The best part? No one’scomplaining as long as everyone’s having agood time.

Merry Christmas!

After waiting for aeons onthe fringes after the

only a matter of time before heis marginalised again and peo-

In our hyper-connected world, editors and jour-nalists are expected to be constantly wired-in tovarious news ‘aggregators’ online such as Twitter

and Facebook to receive and broadcast updatesand news. However, on such informal platforms, scribes who started accounts to air substantialopinions, have over time descended into airingpersonal views, rants and eventually, inane person-al information like needing a new toothbrush orthat their dog has constipation and even, constantself-promotion. With increasing followers, self-indulgence amongst news-people seems to be theorder of the day.

While the editors and reporters of national dailiesand magazines were once deeply admired for theirwork and retained a sense of esteem, today easyaccess on social sites has whittled down that per-sonal space and distance to the old adage of famil-iarity breeds contempt. The trend of dumping per-sonal information and rants on social media seemsto be more in vogue with Indian journalists thanthose abroad, who practice more restrainedengagement with the public. Anderson Cooper, arenowned journalist with CNN, for instance, active-ly promotes not revealing his private life andprefers to maintain his neutrality as a member ofthe media. His twitter profile demonstrates hisresolve, and he remains limited while replying totweets. There are exceptions of course, but mostjournalists abroad really keep it short, availing ofopportunities such as separating public and per-sonal posts on Facebook.

The highlight of my pastime following individualjournalists online came when an editor of a nation-al business paper arrived at our college for place-ment season. Amidst interviews, she proceeded topass snarky comments about the college, the stu-dents and also a long, ‘yaaawwn’. Perhaps it was adevil-may-care attitude being on the giving end, ormerely being unaware of the fact that several of ussubscribed to her were receiving real time updates.

Instances such as this can be viewed at as anexceptional ability to tweet about one’s dinnerplans, minor irritations with the neighbour nextdoor, what one is eating at dinner watching thefamily dog perform tricks and still managing to pullout the next day’s edition. However, what it reallydoes is to bring down the image of the fourth estatefurther. Perhaps, the principle of instant gratifica-tion through constant communication and onlineaddiction for ordinary mortals applies to journal-ists too. But vested with more societal responsibili-ties, it can’t become an excuse for the latter set. AsPrasanth Radhakrishnan, a sub-editor with a lead-ing national daily feels, it really boils down to theintended use of social media. If gaining perspectiveis the objective, then subscribing to wires, websitesand people who curate things of value for dissemi-nation is the better option. However, if the purposeis purely for the grapevine, then one tends to sub-scribe to individuals. With this, pruning yourTwitter and Facebook subscription lists shouldbecome an easier task!

Gen Why?Sharada Annamaraju

Have you done your Christmasshopping yet? Like mostmen, I normally leave it to

the last minute, with often dire con-sequences. My wife will not let meforget my all-time worst gifts:polyester pyjamas (yes, inexcusable, but I was in a rush, honest), slipperswith plastic beading (what's wrongwith that? A lot, apparently) and asaucepan (never again).

That was a premarital gift whichelicited the response: "Well, I sup-pose I could always take it with mewhen I leave you." The saucepan(and wife) are still with me 10 yearson. And so is the worst gift list, which returns to haunt me year afteryear, like an anti-festive refrain.

That is why I love Scrooge andabhor Christmas, a bogus Victorianinvention which is designed tomake us all spend money on uselessfripperies.

Shopping always fills me withexistential angst at the best of times. At the worst of times (Christmas) itis intolerable.

To buy too much or too little? DoI go for quality or quantity? Why

join the Gaderene rush to spend, spend, spend on presents whichcould easily be bought at vast dis-counts in the January sales?

Bah, humbug! Every year I make the same vow:

to buy my presents in January andrecycle them 11 months later. Everyyear I fail to honour it.

I suppose the easiest optionwould be not to exchange gifts atall. There is a lot to be said formiserliness. After years of profligacyand mortgaging ourselves to thehilt, surely we should be encour-aged to save. By earning money and

depositing it in a bank, Scrooge wasmaking credit available to otherswho genuinely needed it. As the oldjoke has it, the difference betweenmiserliness and philanthropy is thatthe philanthropist serves a favouredfew while the miser spreads hislargesse far and wide.

The problem is that if everyonebecame Scrooge-like, the economywould come to a shuddering halt. But I believe there is a halfwayScrooge house when it comes toYuletide: This year, for the first time,my wife and I both elected andbought each other cut-price gifts inadvance.

So I have bought her a yellowjumper and she has bought meleather gloves. How boring is that?

But thank God we have got it outof the way. It certainly takes thepressure off. So there will no maritaldisharmony or barely disguisedlooks of disappointment, aroundthe (plastic) Christmas tree.

I have also asked for socks fromthe in-laws. I'm not being ironic — Iwish. It just gets them and me offthe hook.

If you have left your Christmasshopping to the last minute, good/bad luck. To borrow Gregg Wallace'scatchphrase from Masterchef: Itdoesn't get tougher than this.

There are very few housingoptions available for themiddle-class. With new

projects boasting of advancedfacilities being developed for theelite, the not so rich find it easierto acquire accommodation withthe government providing sub-sidised and cheap housing.Where does that leave the mid-dle-class?

Fortunately, there are nowaffordable options availablewithout the quality being com-promised. Rajiv Swagruha, anautonomous body from theGovernment of Andhra Pradeshhas built top-quality housingkeeping the urban middle-classin mind. Currently there areseven such projects inHyderabad.

The primary question thatarises is that why should oneinvest in Rajiv Swagruha overother equally good projects inthe city? Bharat Reddy, generalmanager (marketing) says, “Theflats here are priced 25 per cent

lesser than other commercialflats. We are reliable and providefacilities that can even put thebest flats to shame. But moreimportantly, as the land is pro-vided by the government, it is lit-igation free and follows all con-struction norms.”

The flats have a lung spaceof 65 per cent which gives amplearea for owners to move around. There are plenty of parksbetween blocks and 10 per centof the space is for commercialpurposes including a club house. The facilities include 24/7 back-up generator, solar water heat-ing, walking tracks, two lifts bothfor passenger and cargo, round-the-clock security, centralisedLPG gas, 24/7 municipal waterapart from a host of others. However, the highlight remainsthat the flats are far more afford-able here and rest assured, it is asecure investment.

Upon purchasing a flat here, housing loans are as easy as buy-ing a loaf of bread from thesupermarket. State Bank ofHyderabad and State Bank ofIndia have adopted these flats.

The interest rate too is 0.5 percent cheaper and there is a waiv-er on the transaction fee aswellThis by itself multiplies intofurther savings.

“Don’t believe us until yousee the flats because seeing isbelieving,” advises Bharat. It wasonly after Postnoon visited theSahabhavana Township inBandalaguda that we realisedwhat that meant.

The sheer size of the town-ship startled us. The four cate-gories of units- three bedroom,two-and-a-half bedroom, twobedroom and single bedroomswere rightly divided into blockswithin the compound. We werefortunate to look at all the modelflats are we are undeniablyimpressed. They were spaciousincluding the single bedroomflat.

The highest quality of fit-tings is used here from theJaguar toilet accessories to theKajaria anti-skid tiles. In fact, tomake it ‘earthquake proof’ theyused 14 per cent more steel. Thehighlight however is the sliding

glass doors to the enormous bal-cony. The senior citizen block isimpressive as well. It houses sin-gle bedroom units which havebeen made keeping theirrequirements in mind. Apartfrom the usual anti-skid tiles andthe handles to assist the old inthe toilets, they have a panicbutton strategically placedthroughout the flat in case thereis an emergency.

On the ground floor, there isa clinic with a nurse available24/7 and a pharmacy. They evenhave a beautiful park to whichonly the residents will haveaccess to.

Established in 2007, RajivSwagruha is a self-financed pro-ject that is demand driven. Itbuys land from the governmentat market price and does notspend much on advertisements. The flats range from Rs 6.5 lakhsto Rs 3.5 lakhs and some of theunits don’t have common walls.“At that price, anybody earningRs 6,000 to Rs 50,000 and abovecan afford a unit here,” concludes Bharat.

Afford a home and happinessHow many units were built inHyderabad? And how manydwellings are there in eachunit?

We have taken up five town-ships. In all, we proposed to build9,000 units and 5,000 are com-plete, two in advanced stage whichare 4,000 units. What is the investment andcost margin?

We don’t calculate in terms ofinvestment as it is a social initia-tive. The cost margin we realise isfive per cent. The total investmentinto the projects across the State isRs 1,300 crore.

The cost range of dwellings isRs. 6.3 lakh to Rs. 36 lakhs. Thereare no hidden costs like water, electricity, VAT, service tax, etc. Ourprice is inclusive of all. In ourtransactions, the buyer doesn’t feelcheated, as ours is a transparentcosting formula. How did the governmentrealize its investment?

There is no investment fromgovernment. We are taking loanfrom banks and then we are col-lecting money from buyers torepay to the banks. We are not intoreal estate business. Our intentionis to maintain that unit is afford-able to the middle income group. How many applicants with-drew?We have received 1.76 lakhs appli-cations out of which 21,000 havewithdrawn. They booked due tobusiness aspirations, as RajivSwagruha houses have 25 per centcost difference compared to openmarket. We are refunding theirdeposits of those who withdrew ininstalments. How many more units arethere in the pipeline? We are targeting 1.76 lakh houses. In the first phase, 16,000 housesare being built. As many as 6,000of t hem are independent houses, mostly in tier II and III cities. What is the patronage like inthe City and districts?

While the response is excellentin districts, it is picking up in theCity. Frequent agitations hamperedthe bookings. But we would becomfortable when we get 500bookings a month, while it is 200as of now.

We’re not talking 80s untouched wilderness, but shapelybold brows are back! When it comes to eyebrows, celebs, models, and make-up artists believe that big is beautiful

According to a make-up artistfor designers Derek Lam andJoseph Altuzarra, “The eye-

brows are like hangers that hold upthe eyes.” Every year autumn’sstrong lip colours and rich fabricsinspire make-up artists to put astronger emphasis on the eyes and

the brows. This year, strong browswere sported by models whowalked for Carolina Herrera,Victoria Beckham, Alexander Wangand Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. Whatyou saw on the ramp was darkerand thicker but let’s keep it downto something more wearable with-

out looking like Ernie or Bert oreven Groucho Marx for that matter.

A strong brow can dramaticallychange the overall look of yourface. Now, if you are new to thestrong brow look, it can prove tobe a daunting task but it mayslowly grow on you.

BROW WOW

n‘Strong’ does not equal to ‘unruly’ eyebrows. You still need to groom them a little and trim the longends occassionally.

nInvest in a good brow pencil or powders. Filling in the sparse areas with an eyebrow pencil or apowder are two ways that darken and give them a definite shape. Go about a half to a whole shade

lighter than you first think though picking a colour that’s too dark will overpower your eyes. Here are a few suggestions:

8Revlon ColorStay Brow Enhancer 8Brow Shaper by Clinique

nGet an arch. Even if you are not much of a brow shaper, you need a little bit of an arch to to wearthe strong brow. And that counteracts any heaviness your brow may have visually.

nDraw your shadow on with a soft, super thin angle brush. Draw your shadow line at the bottom lineor at the edge of your eyebrow and then blend up into the brow. Then with a clean eyebrow brush, brush through so that the shadow blends into your skin, looking more natural. The more you brush, the softer the brow will look.

nThe key to making this trend work is keeping the rest of the face clear of colour and making thebrows the focal point of the whole look.

nStand arm’s length away from the mirror to get a proper perspective of balance tocheck your brow handiwork. Keep the rest of your make-upin nude tones to make a strongstatement.

Here’s how to get the look of the season

Now lets talk about the threestalwarts in the smartphoneindustry— the iPhone,

Blackberry and the Android. Who isthe ultimate winner? Who is the bet-ter of the three? Three enthusiasts, one for each, battle it out in the ulti-mate war of the smartphones.

“The iPhone is the envy of thecommon man, the Jacob diamond ofall diamonds,” says Mir ShajiAli(right). As a die-hard iPhoneenthusiast, his vision is blurred andhe cannot see beyond the iPhone.“Tell me, how many phones canmatch up to the sheer magnificenceand efficiency of the iPhone. It issuperior in every way. There are amillion applications. What does thatsay? You will never be bored.Thetouch screen, well, it is extraordinaryto say the least. Your fingers just slide

on a smooth screen!” exclaims Shaji. Defending his phone, he adds,

“Android is just weird. The battery ofany Android-powered phone isbeyond pathetic. It sucks the life outof a phone. The screen resolution isblah! On the other hand a Blackberryis nothing beyond the Blackberrymessenger (BBM). Take that out andwhat you have is a plain overpricedphone. There are not as many appli-cations in Blackberry to entertain youas well.”

“That is so not true! Blackberry isa great phone and it has everythingto keep you busy,” defendsBlackberry fan Samah Baig (top).“The best thing about the Blackberryis the BBM. It is what you are payingfor. You can send messages, pictures, videos— all for free. The convenienceof an e-mail is so much better too.Unlike an iPhone, you don’t end upmaking silly mistakes with the auto-correct option and post it on the web.You have to know exactly what youtype because of the superior keypad,”she adds.

“iPhone has a similar app to aBBM called Whatsapp but even thatcan’t compete primarily because youneed Internet for that while BBM is,well, Internet-free! Android? What’sAndroid?” quips Samah.

“Wow! That is being ignorant.Android is the fastest growing operat-ing system in the world. That speaksfor something, doesn’t it? What I loveabout Android is that there are a lotof customising options. Most of theapps are free in the Android Market. Some of the important apps usefulfor office are free unlike the iPhone.

Android-powered phones have afaster CPU,” says Nitin Singh (left),who loves his Android phone somuch that after work, he shoves hisiPhone into the drawer only to usethe Android.

“The iPhone is made such thatyou are only tuned to iTunes. If Iwant to choose what I want to, I can’t.That is exploitation. Besides, I can’tadd any external memory to it.However, where it lags behind anAndroid is that you can’t customise itat all for free. Blackberry is dying. What more can I say?” says Nitin.

Android or not, none of thesephones can be ignored. With so manylucrative user applications optionsavailable on all of them the customeris the king here. And it all boils downto who likes what more.

THE WAR OF THESMARTPHONESWhich is the best smartphone? This debatewill never die down as long as technologyexists. Call it rivalry or just plain jealousy, neither of them can live without eachother. They are constantly challenging eachother only to provide consumers with morethings to play with

Introduce avariety inyour diet

Dr Suneetha Sapur

I am 38 years old and have been diag-nosed as pre diabetic, please tell mehow to manage my diet.

For pre diabetic condition lifestylemodifications are very important. I rec-ommended you to meet a nutritionistfor a personalised diet plan. However, Ifollow these general guidelines. Eat a variety of foods: For better con-trol of blood sugar instead of usingonly rice include other grains likewheat, jowar, ragi or unpolished ricein your diet. More of whole grains: Include wholepulses like chole, rajmah, moong etcand also other dals like moong dal andchanna dal in your everyday diet.Use less oil: A diabetic person is at ahigher risk of heart disease. It is advis-able to reduce consumption of oil.Restricted amount of oil for cookingand not preparing the vegetables infried forms will help. Traditionallyused oils like groundnut and til oilsare good for health. Ghee, butter, coconut oil can increase cholestrol.Use less salt: Usually Indian diets arerich in salt, especially using pickles, papad and adding more salt to food isquite common. People with diabetesmay also get Hypertension. It is betterto use salt in moderation by restrict-ing the intake of pickles, papad andadding less salt while cooking food.Use of Eggs/Nonveg: Fish contain aspecial type of oil which helps inblood sugar management, so con-sumption of fish is encouraged 3-4times a week. Chicken is also good.Simple sugars: Certain foods increaseblood sugar levels, especially foodswith high sugar content. Few fruitsalso contain simple sugars in excesslike banana, mango, sapota, seethaphal, jack fruit. Avoid fruitjuices.Dietary Fiber: Dietary fiber is thatpart of the food which is not digested.Fibre in vegetables, fruits, legumesand fenugreek seeds are effective incontrolling blood sugar and also helpin reducing cholesterol levels.

Fast, but lacks the paceFor an action-suspense thriller, Don 2 hits the mark with grandeur andstyle, but it has some predictable twists. All in all it fails to translateinto a nail-biting experience

With all the hullabaloo sur-rounding the release ofFarhan Akhtar’s sequel The

Don is back, one is bound to think itwould be a thriller that would keepus on our toes. An hour into themovie and we realise otherwise. Themovie begins with our undisputeddrug lord Don surfacing in Thailand, having already established hissupremacy in the Asian underworld. His focus now lies in expanding hisempire across Europe as well. Forthis, he seeks the help of Vardhan(Boman Irani), an old enemy whoDon initially puts behind bars butthen as the script requires, meticu-lously plans Vardhan’s escape from aprison in Kuala Lumpur. Don, then, engineers his own arrest by surren-dering himself to the delight ofInterpol officers (Priyanka Chopra)and her boss Mallik (Om Puri) whohave been on his trail for the pastfive years. Don and Vardhan, forgettheir differences and are plotting amajor heist in icy Berlin. How theymanage it what essentially forms therest of the story.

But, who puts in two arch-ene-mies together in the same prisonanyway? One a glamourous master-

mind and the other a resentful scum. Farhan Akhtar is definitely an

intelligent filmmaker but with thisfilm, he presents us with an almostboring script. The plot is weak and isnothing that we have not seen

before, robbing a bank which safe-guards the plates used to print cur-rency notes. But for the devious Don,no mission is impossible. The dia-logues lack the required punch, sounding quite lame, especially theones mouthed by the Don himself. The action sequences may very wellbe the USP of the film and have beendone with absolute finesse. The lightmoments in the film are few and farbetween. The music is mediocre andnot a patch to the former hit tracks.

Don 2 has a large supporting castbut they all fade into the backgroundas King Khan steals the spotlight yetagain with his wit, dreadlocks andhis mischievous grin. PriyankaChopra, an important character inthe first film, is barely needed in thisone and her role does nothing toexcite the audience. Boman Iraniwho is known for his witty one-linersand comic timing, looks menacingin parts but seems lost.

The film excites and providesyou with the much needed thrillsthat are required for an action enter-tainer but nothing that will leave youat the edge of your seat gasping forwhat comes next.

It’s been on ice at Disneyfor years, but it nowseems that a thaw is

approaching Uncle Walt’sversion of The Snow Queen,

which has just scored aNovember 2013 release date,

under the new monikerFrozen. That whole clever

‘thaw’ line doesn’t reallywork when paired with thattitle, but give us a break, eh?

It’s Christmas. The story, of course, is

Hans Christian Andersen’sand involves Kay, whose

mind is twisted when hisheart and eyes are pierced

by shards of an evil troll mir-ror. He’s then willinglyabducted by the Snow

Queen, who travels theworld with the winter weath-

er. Kay’s playmate, neigh-bour and sweetheart Gerda

however, still believes in himand sets out on an epic quest

to retrieve him from theSnow Queen’s palace.Animator Glen Keane

(The Little Mermaid, BeautyAnd The Beast, Aladdin) was

working on the project asearly as a decade ago, butabandoned it in favour of

Rapunzel, which emergedthis year as Tangled.

Adjective-based names areapparently all the rage for

There was a time when The BTeam was a cop comedystarring Will Ferrell and

Mark Wahlberg, before a certainA-Team caused a name-switch toThe Other Guys.

But with The Other Guys nowcome and gone, and The A-Team

a distant, tank-flying memory,The B Team is back, this time inthe form of a spy spoof beingdeveloped by Seth Rogen.

It just goes to show you can’tkeep a good name down.

Or something. This projectactually pre-dates those others,

and its title was presumably influx there for a while.

Development being as slowas it is though, it’s fair gameagain. The story in this case isabout a ‘top secret-agent’ whogets kidnapped and has to be res-cued by his back-up gang ofresearchers and techies, who presumably aren’t quite as ‘top’ as he is.

Director Brad Bird snubbed the chance to film thenew Mission: Impossible movie in 3D because he is“not exactly convinced” by the new technology.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol features the fran-chise’s lead Tom Cruise in his most daring stunts yet, including scaling the world’s tallest building in Dubai. Butrather than showcase the impressive action shots in 3D,Bird kept his filming to more traditional methods. He tellsBBC’s Newsbeat, “I think that any time you have a new toy, people feel excited about it and then they overuse it. Iremain interested in 3D but I’m not exactly convinced yet. What I’m more interested in is really high resolution, andreally big screens.”

Actor Elijah Wood is baffled bythe increase in big money

blockbusters, insistingthey're failing to attract audiences.

The Lord of the Rings star has beenwatching box office trends, and

he's worried by the lack of cinema-goers turning out to see high-pro-

file releases. He tells Britain's Guardian

newspaper, "It's like there's nomiddle class of movies any more.

It's either minuscule budgets or it'sf**king $200 million. You don't

need to spend that much money!"And it's sort of failing.

A lot of films have come outthis year that were supposed to be

huge and haven't been. That's abad trend. I'm biased, but the

thing that separates Rings fromthat crop is that it felt like the

world's biggest independent film.”

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2011Weekly look into your future 30Chai Time post noon

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
