HYDERABAD: While we wereasleep, the City police assumedthe role of a headmaster andcame out with an advisory memo, with a stick attached that theonus of your getting caught drunkon the road will be on the bars orrestaurants that served you liquor!

The shocking diktat comesafter the recent well-publicisedsuccess of the traffic police inhauling up the youngsters andcelebrities who had one peg toomany on some party or occasionin the club or hotels.

The notice now the City com-missioner issued, of whichPostnoon has a facsimile, tells that“it is the responsibility of themanagement of pubs/bars tomake necessary arrangements toprovide drivers/cabs to the cus-tomers who are in a drunken stateo reach their destination safely…pubs/bars can maintain breathanalyser in for use by theirclients.”

Joint Police CommissionerMM Bhagwat said that they haveasked the bar and pub owners toprocure breath analysers which

will be a client service. Will the police department

which got World Bank funding forbuying equipment procure onebreath analyser each of therestaurants? “No comment.” Thetop police officer said.

City police chief AK Khan said,“Well, I can’t comment anythingat this juncture. I have convened ameeting of five star hotels, barsand restaurant owners todayafternoon to discuss on the issue.”

The headmaster in uniformtells further that much like thestatutory warning on cigarettepackets and liquor bottles, thepubs, bars and restaurants shoulddisplay posters 'Don't Drink andDrive' and 'Drunk Driving is AnOffence' at the entrances.

The advisory is obviously ill-received by bar/ restaurant own-ers who are already lassoed on toomany counts. While the bars andrestaurant managements appreci-ate the efforts of the policedepartment to prevent drunkenand driving, they are displeased atsome clauses of the advisory.

The tone of the advisory isthat it is basically the fault of thebars and restaurants that peopleget caught on the road. And, inthe case of them found wantingon compliance of police directiveto be vigilant, there hangs a threatof snapping their license. “All themanagements of bars and restau-rants are instructed to follow theabove instructions with immedi-ate effect and any disregard ofthese directions will be viewedseriously besides cancellation oftheir entertainment licenses, fol-lowing due process of law.”

AP Hotels AssociationPresident, GV krishnaiah, has nowords. He rather spluttered,“sarkar ki dabbulu kaavali 90 percent bikelapai vastaaru kada mot-tam ban cheyandi (90 per cent ofliquor revenue to the governmentcomes from those come on bikes. It should rather ban liquor salethan indulging in this kind of gim-mick.”

Bar and restaurant owners saythat some rules prescribed by thepolice are prone to misuse.

Especially, the rule which saysthat the licenses of the bars andrestaurant owners will be can-celled if more than five cases areregistered against them.

"The police are openlyencouraging bars and restaurantmanagements to resort to illegalmeans to kill competition amongthem. Any bar owner can trick thepolice to book more than fivecases against his rival bar orrestaurant to get its license can-celled," Ravinath Goud, owner ofVenkateswara Bar and Restauranttold Postnoon.

Another rule that the bars and

restaurants' managements shouldmake arrangements to drop theircustomers, who are in drunkenstate to reach their destinations isalso termed ridiculous. Many ofthese managements are sayingthat they can’t make sucharrangements as they are alreadysustaining losses on account ofaggressive anti-drunken drivecampaign by traffic police.

A senior lawyer who wantedto be anonymous (as he too lovesa pint of elixir once a while)remarked that such directive willnot stand the scrutiny of law. “Thepolice are exceeding their brief.”

Megastar-turned politicianChiranjeevi has a mega

problem on his hands—how tokeep his fuming flock in theavuncular Congress camp.

The erstwhile PRP MLAs arespending sleepless nights thesedays. Legislator Sreedhar KrishnaReddy said, “We hope thatChiranjeevi would be made aRajya Sabha member in Februaryor else we would rethink aboutPRP’s merger with the Congress.”

Chiranjeevi and his legislatorsare clearly feeling humiliated astheir wait for rewards is extend-ing hopelessly. The promisemade by the Congress leadership

at Delhi was that Chiranjeeviwould be suitably rewarded witha berth in the Union Ministry andthree of his party MLAs would beinducted into the State Cabinetbesides some other plum posts. But as of today, the only recogni-tion that Chiranjeevi got was apromise of his nomination in theCongress Co-ordination commit-tee.

Despite helping the Congressgovernment survive, Chiranjeeviand his party legislators havebeen cold shouldered by theCongress High Command andthe chief minister. This despitethe fact that Chiranjeevi is a closeconfidant of the APCC presidentBotsa Satyanarayana and bothbelong to the Kapu community.

Danam vs Anjan boutover deputy mayoraltyFinal call on the candidate will be taken by the CM despite hecticlobbying by Secunderabad MP and labour minister

U Srinivas [email protected]

Minister for LabourDanam Nagendarand SecunderbadMP Anjan Kumar

Yadav have been at loggerheadsfor a long time. But now theirrivalry has reached a new nadirwith each lobbying for his can-didate for the deputy mayoroffice.

The issue has now beentaken to Delhi. Election for thedeputy mayor post is due by this

month- end and both of themare tirelessly meeting in turn thechief minister, minister formunicipal administrationMaheedhar Reddy and PCCChief Botsa Satyanarayana.

While Anjan shuttlesbetween Delhi and Hyderabadas a Parliament member, it islearnt that Danam made a tripto Delhi to see that his candi-date gets the trophy.

It is learnt that calls fromDelhi had reached PCC Chief forAnjan Kumar’s candidate (iden-tity of the candidates are kept

under wraps). It is learnt thatAnjan Kumar has told Delhi thathe never asked for favours in thepast but this time he wants hiscandidate for the deputy mayorposition. But Nagendar is veryclose to PCC Chief and he knowshow to get things done.

All said and done the finalnod has to come from the chiefminister as he is a Hyderabadiand has his own opinion onsuch matters. At the end it couldbe the CM’s blue-eyed boy (orgirl) who would win the chair, sources point outl.

It is reliably learnt that whensome of the city leaders wantedto make suggestions in thisregard to the CM, he snubbedthem saying they they shouldfirst stop corruption in theGHMC and then think aboutlobbying for the posts. He citedthe example of some officialswho were suspended and saidthat what would the City peoplethink when leaders lobby for thecity posts? He told them thatable leaders will get the post andthat there was no need for lob-bying at all times. The CM alsoquestioned one of the leaders aswhy they should take this issueto Delhi.

Contractors threaten to stallJalayagnam projectPostnoon [email protected]

The builders Associationof India (BAI) has warnedthe State government

that the contractors are leftwith no other option thanstopping works of Jalayagnamprojects if their funds were notreleased and rates revised. They blamed the governmentfor not coming to the rescue ofthe contractors on variousfronts.

Talking to Postnoon, chair-man of BAI P Mohan Reddysaid that lot of time was wastedin land acquisition and acquir-ing the forest land. Apart fromthis delay late payment wasalso another reason for slowwork. Most of the contractorswere driven to bankruptcy andsome of them have suspendedwork for payments he said.

While people think that

contractors are thugs and rob-bing the society , ground reali-ties are different,” said Reddy.“They are a harassed lot.”

He suggested to the gov-ernment that escalation of costfor materials and labour had tobe compensated. Like otherStates do. Reimbursing thecommission on bank guaran-tees beyond agreement periodis one. Reimbursing extraexpenditure incurred on insur-ance premiums is another. This apart, reimbursing extraexpenditure on cutting andremoving the rock by con-trolled blasting, paying backthe extra expenditure incurredon structures beyond the spec-ified numbers are other helpsexpected of government. Thecontractors want the govern-ment to work out a method toresolve the impasse withoutunduly burdening the contrac-tors or the government.

1 They have to absorb costoverrun

2 Bank guarantees have to berenewed as long as theworks got delayed in thename of permissions

3 Extra premiums for insurancepaid due to delays

4 Interests on mobilisationadvance borne by the con-tractor.

5 Government never botheredto respond over the old ratesand agreements

6 Idling charges claimedagainst machinery, tools andplant rejected

7 The contractors incurredheavy financial loss due todelay in land acquisition, seeking permission from for-est department.

We want our money back, it’sinjustice, we have been vic-timised, retake, refund aresome of the angry outbursts

doing the rounds on several MBA fora andsocial networking sites after the recentSNAP (Symbiosis national aptitude paper)fiasco.

For students who appeared for theexam, the alleged rigging and leaking ofthe question paper of SNAP 2011 has leftthem feeling cheated and angry. Some ofthe allegations made by students andtraining experts include questions takenfrom coaching institute websites andblogs.

“The GK section of the paper was lift-ed from one of the blogs. Also, there werefew questions which were directly copiedfrom the material of a reputed coachinginstitute. This gave students of these insti-tutes an unfair advantage,” says Suchit S,an MBA aspirant.

The problems that students faced withthis year’s SNAP exam were endless. Forstarters, they were given incorrect ques-tions and answer options. The multipleanswer possibilities in a test had singleanswer choice questions, there was miss-ing data from the question stem andanswer options as well as spelling mis-takes and repeated answers.

“I spent five minutes on one set of log-ical reasoning and analytical reasoningand still couldn’t figure it out. It’s easy tocriticise the students that they wastedtime on it but when there are 6 marks areat stake you can’t just leave it,” fumesAbhishek Anand, a student.

He goes on to add, “Even in the quan-titative section that was riddled with mis-takes I kept rechecking my answers butcouldn’t find any mistake nor could I get amatch for my answer. For instance, instead of 5+5/7 the question had anoption as 55/7.”

Naga Akhilesh says there wereappalling spelling mistakes in the verbalsection. “I got set G which had printingerrors. I had an option in a question as‘HAD HAD’ whereas in other sets the sen-tence was ‘HAS HAD.’ There were spellingmistakes like, KERNAL instead of KERNELand MASSENGER instead of MESSEN-GER,” he says.

When contacted, officials fromSymbiosis remained unavailable for com-ment. But a letter of clarification postedon the website said, ‘A prima facie investi-gation has not found anything wrong inthe SNAP examination.’ The letter signedby Madhu Sharma, registrar, furtherreads: ‘We wish to clarify that theUniversity does not have any tie up withany coaching institution.’

Students fume asdreams SNAP

UJJWAL KUMAR,NEW DELHI

Ihad worked very hard forthis year’s SNAP but in the end I realised

that it was nothing but a second gradecoaching centre’s mock test. Most of theGK questions were directly lifted from ablog and coaching centres’ websites. If thiswas not enough, many quant and logicalreasoning questions were also lifted fromanother coaching centre’s website.

THILAK KUMAR, HYDERABAD

Iam one of the thousandsof students who appeared for SNAP.

There were many problems with the paper, not only were the questions directly liftedfrom a coaching institute's website butalso there were questions that didn't makeany sense. Surprisingly, the questions car-ried the maximum marks and hence could-n't just be ignored.

PRIYANKASHARMA,HIMACHAL PRADESH

We all believed in the brand Symbiosisbut this time the SNAP exam just

snapped right back at us. Even if we aregiven grace marks for the disputed ques-tions they still can’t make up for the timewe lost on those questions. For many likeme it was a dream to get into to SIU but ithas been shattered. We need justice!

ANKIT DIKSHITNEW DELHI

For people like me whobelong to middle class families it’s not

easy to shed around Rs 7000 and see itgo waste. The SIU has earned incrores(20+) and still couldn't manage toset a paper well. I am disappointed withthe Indian mode of education and thelackadaisical approach of the regulatorsof national level exams.

The quake comes 10 months afterswathes of the city centre were destroyed byanother quake.

The earthquake hit at 1358 local time(0058 GMT). Electricity and telecommuni-

cations services have been disrupted insome areas. A shopping centre has alsobeen evacuated and residents were report-ed to be standing outside buildings.

The airport was closed but an officialtold local media it was expected to reopenlater in the day after checks. Witnesses toldlocal media shoppers ran from buildings asgoods fell off shelves.

Resident Keith Tannock: “It was a vio-lent rocking sensation - trees were wavingbackwards and forwards.” Police are check-ing the city for damage and Prime MinisterJohn Key is being updated on develop-ments, his spokesman said.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said thequake had left people shaken.

“I haven’t heard any more significantproblems at the moment,” local mediaquoted him as saying.

“Inevitably it would have caused dam-age to structures, we hope it hasn’t unset-tled any rock falls, and we just have to hopethe liquefaction issues don’t return.”

Liquefaction is the weakening of the soildue to the rising of silt and water sparked byan earthquake. Local media said there werereports of liquefaction in the suburb ofParklands.

Genocide row:Turkey reacts toFrench law

Turkey has frozen relations withFrance, recalling its ambassador and

suspending all economic, political andmilitary meetings in response to FrenchMPs’ approval of a law that would makeit a crime to deny that the mass killing ofArmenians in 1915 by Ottoman Turkswas genocide. The furious Turkish reac-tion to Paris’s parliamentary votemarked an unprecedented low betweenthe Nato partners.

The Turkish Prime Minister, RecepTayyip Erdogan, cancelled permissionfor French military planes to land andwarships to dock in Turkey, annulled alljoint military exercises, recalled theTurkish ambassador to France for con-sultations and said he would decide caseby case whether to let the French mili-tary use Turkish airspace.

Iraq’s Vice-President Tariq al-Hashemihas said that Prime Minister NouriMaliki is to blame for a sudden surge of

violence in the country. Dozens of peoplewere killed in a string of blasts across thecapital, Baghdad, on Thursday.

Mr Hashemi, who is subject to an arrestwarrant on terror charges, said that MrMaliki should be focusing on security not“chasing patriotic politicians”. The crisishas sparked fears of renewed sectarian con-flict in Iraq.

Mr Maliki is from the majority Shia Arabgroup while Mr Hashemi is one of thecountry’s most prominent Sunni politi-cians. He has been accused of orchestratingterror attacks on officials and securityforces, a charge he denies. In response, themain Sunni political bloc, al-Iraqiyya, isblockading parliament and the cabinet, putting the future of the fragile year-oldunity government in doubt.

“We should blame Mr Maliki, he starteda national crisis and it’s not easy to control,”Mr Hashemi told the BBC’s Arabic Service.“The Iraqis have a right to be worried. Hesaid the attacks happened because the gov-ernment was too busy chasing “patrioticpoliticians” instead of terrorists:

“What happened today shows the defi-ciency and it’s a good evidence for the lackof control over administration of the securi-ty brief; because the security services are

pointed in the wrong direction.” MrHashemi has previously compared theprime minister’s behaviour and style of gov-ernment to that of deposed former leaderSaddam Hussein, telling US Foreign Policymagazine Mr Maliki was “very muchadamant about running this country in avery bad and tough way”.

Thursday’s attack were the worst to hitIraq in months, and came just after the USwithdrew its troops, ending nearly nineyears of military engagement.

At least 68 people were killed and nearly200 injured as car and roadside bombswent off in 16 separate locations, mostlyShia areas of the city.

Now, the retailchain plans to add 200-300 retailsstores in Mumbai next year and isincreasing its footprint in NewDelhi where there are already 34stores.

Currently, MedPlus had 1,000stores across the country and itwas adding an average of 250stores year on year. To a query onhow the company’s diagnosticservices division was performing,he tersely replied: “Very slow.”Asked if the company was plan-ning to do away with the diagnos-tic services business, he replied inthe negative.

Replying to another questionon the clinics in pharmacies, which almost remained a non-starter, Gangadi said: “Those two(diagnostic services and clinics)are no longer our focus areas fornow.” Asked if MedPlus wouldconsider a tie-up with chain ofclinics like Razi, he said: “No.”

He claimed that the Rs50,000-crore pharmacy segmentwas largely unorganised in thecountry and MedPlus com-manded a business of 1 to 1.5per cent of it, which was again

30 per cent of the organised sec-tor. He said organised retail inpharmacy segment took 5 percent of the cake.

MedPlus, which dabbledwith the idea of having a largechain of stores in the franchiseemodel, withdrew the plan andinstead grew organically on ahub-and-spoke model with amajor store catering to the SKU(stock-keeping unit) needs ofspoke stores.

Each store, depending ontheir location and demographics

of the geography, would typicallygross Rs70 lakh to Rs80 lakh ayear. The company ‘s loyalty pro-grammes, which could beredeemed to claim gifts, gainedpopularity with its 1.30 lakh cus-tomers in six States.

The deal, which must be con-firmed by votes in both chambersof Congress, allowed Obama toend the year on a triumphant noteas he contemplates his re-electionbid, after spending most of 2011being thwarted by Republicans.

Republican leaders in theHouse of Representatives agreedto back a two-month extension of

a two per cent payroll tax cut, afteroriginally blocking the measure, the product of a bipartisan com-promise in the Senate.

Their tactics had sparked a tor-rent of derision from the media, some conservative luminaries andDemocrats who eagerly seized achance to pose as the party oflower taxes, a mantle that Rep -ublicans usually claim.

“(It) may not have been politi-cally the smartest thing in theworld,” Republican House Spe akerJohn Boehner said of the Repu -blican gambit, partly powered byTea Party conservatives, after

announcing the deal.Obama had enlisted the help

of supporters on Twitter and theInternet to argue that many Ame -ricans would have been badly hurtby losing $40 from their pay checkeach two weeks if the tax holidayexpired on January 1.

“I want to thank every Amer -ican who raised your voice toremind folks in this town what thisdebate was all about,” Obama said.Earlier, a tetchy Obama held a tele-vised event to vent fury that thoughmost people in Washi ngton agreedon the need to extend the tax break,Congress could not agree on the

LONDON: England captain John Terry pro-duced a typical block to spare Chelseadefeat in a 1-1 draw against TottenhamHotspur in his first match since he wascharged by UK prosecutors with racialabuse.

Chelsea centre-back Terry blocked agoalbound shot from Emmanuel Adebayorin stoppage time to ensure a point for thevisitors at White Hart Lane on Thursday.

The draw left Spurs third in the PremierLeague table, two points in front of theirLondon rivals, after Adebayor’s opener wascancelled out by an equaliser from Chelseastriker Daniel Sturridge.

And it meant Spurs were nine pointsadrift of leaders Manchester City andChelsea 11 shy of the table-toppers.

Tottenham got off to an ideal start asTogo international Adebayor took advan-tage of Chelsea skipper Terry’s slipshoddefending eight minutes into the match byslotting home before Sturridge levelled mid-way through the first half.

Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech madesome crucial saves late in the game, asTottenham desperately searched for a win-ner. The build-up centred around Terry, charged on Wednesday with racially abusingQPR defender Anton Ferdinand duringChelsea’s loss at Loftus Road in October.

Terry — promised the full backing ofmanager Andre Villas-Boas — was booed bythe bulk of Spurs fans as he began his pre-match warm-up, but was applauded by theaway contingent. He was jeered again as heled Chelsea out ahead of kick-off — andwith every touch of the ball. But apart fromhis mistake to let in Adebayor, he deliveredan assured performance.

Chelsea had failed to beat Spurs on theirlast five visits to White Hart Lane and the

hosts had them on the back foot from thefirst whistle.

And after seven minutes Spurs wereahead — and Terry was partly at fault, afterSandro took the ball off Sturridge in midfieldand sent Bale on a run down the left.

Gareth Bale sped toward the byline andjust before crossing the ball into the box,Terry peeled off Adebayor to give himenough space to meet the Wales star’s centrefor a close range tap-in.

Juan Mata came close to levelling forChelsea three minutes later, but his stingingshot was palmed into Sturridge’s path byBrad Friedel and the Blues striker spoonedthe rebound over the bar.

Sturridge made amends in the 23rd

minute as he turned in Ashley Cole’s crossfor Chelsea’s equaliser.

The goal was met with vehementprotests from the home players as theEngland left-back had appeared to havehandled in the build-up.

A rare mistake from Ledley King in the73rd minute almost resulted in a second forSturridge after the Tottenham defender’sweak headed clearance fell to the striker, butFriedel was able to keep the ball out.

Cech saved his side from a loss six min-utes from time when he managed to tip overSandro’s shot. And in injury time theChelsea goalkeeper managed a full-stretchsave to tip wide Adebayor’s shot from justinside the area. AFP

VILAS-BOAS REMAINS UPBEAT AFTER DERBY DRAWLONDON: Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas (right) believes his side are still verymuch in the English title race after DanielSturridge’s goal earned them a 1-1 draw againstTottenham Hotspur here at White Hart Lane.

Villas-Boas saw the performance as evi-dence his philosophy of introducing an attrac-tive, passing game to Chelsea was starting toproduce results.

“In terms of our title challenge, it keeps italive,” Villas-Boas said after a share of the spoilsin a London derby against third-placedTottenham, who remain two points in front ofChelsea.

“The draw punishes us a little bit in termsof the league. “We are still in it. If we take sixpoints from our next two home fixtures, we arepretty much in it.

“We came to Tottenham who are also titlechallengers and it is a good point to get. Wehave been in a worse situation than this and Iam sure we can further shorten the distance.

“Today [Thursday] our passing game

exploded to wonderful levels. It was fantastic towatch this team play when they find themselvesin possession and take opportunities.”

The focus was on Terry ahead of the matchafter the Crown Prosecution Service chargedhim Wednesday with racially abusing QPRdefender Anton Ferdinand during Chelsea’s lossat Loftus Road in October.

But Villas-Boas added: “His performanceshave increased since the incident. His commit-ment was never in doubt.”

Swann warnsof death ofcricketTom Collomosse

Graeme Swann cannot understandsome of the decisions made bythose who govern cricket but as

he prepares for a schedule that wouldtest any sportsman, his biggest gripehas nothing to do with self interest.

For the England spinner’s chief fearis that the sport he loves will die in itscurrent form unless more is done tosave Test matches.

Swann is angry that the inauguralWorld Test Championship, scheduled totake place in England in 2013, has beenpostponed at least until 2017 becausethe International Cricket Council’sbroadcast partners would rather screenthe 50-over Champions Trophy, whichthey believe is more financially viable.

Test audiences are dropping in Asiabut remain strong in England andAustralia, and Swann is pleading withthe sport’s authorities to protect theoldest form of cricket, without which hebelieves the game would be almostirrelevant.

“If you just let Test cricket dwindleand fade, where will your cricketerscome from?” asked Swann. “You’re notgoing to get big, famous names comingjust through Twenty20, and in the end, cricket will die out, because Twenty20 isnot the same game, even though I loveit.

“It will die out as we know it, as thegame with all the tradition and all thegood things that have happened overthe years. If Test cricket ceases to be themost important thing, I don’t want to bea part of it.

“Who gives a monkey’s if someonecomes through T20? You will never lookback in 100 years’ time and discussthem, the way Don Bradman is stillrevered and idolised.

“My biggest nightmare is Test crick-et disappearing and there are more one-day internationals played instead. Thatwould be it, cricket out of the windowfor me.”

“The series coming up [against pak-istan] will be incredibly difficult cricket-wise but it will be very easy socially andrelations between the two teams will befine. Because of what has happened, with people going to prison, both teamswill want to draw a line under it and lettheir cricket do the talking.”

TALK BACKSad state of affairsOur city is lagging far behind in safety cul-ture. Several accidents that have takenplace in the last few monthshave shown how neglect ofthese crucial areas can endangerlives. Lack of awareness and laxi-ty of officials play equal roles inthe current sad state of affairs. The State government should takeimmediate measures to implementthe fire and safety procedures andrules to avoid frequent incidentstaking place resulting in loss of life andproperty.

Helpful on healthThe health page of Postnoon packs quite a

bunch of information and expertadvice from top doctors in thecity. I am a regular reader of thispage and have now told mydaughters also to read thispage regularly. It would bevery helpful if you could add asmall section on what to dofor accidents and injuriesthat are likely to take place

at home. The stories on behavioural issuesand other such problems are very interest-ing; you should take more such stories.

All the best for ChiruThe story on lobbying for Vizag Parliamentseat was very interesting. Ever since hedecided to merge his Praja Rajyam partywith the Congress, Chiranjeevi has beensidelined under one pretext or the other. The promise of plum posts at Centre andState to him and his followers has notmaterialised so far and this has causedmany to desert him and join other partieswhere they have better prospects. Therecent no-confidence motion restored somerespect to him and I hope he will be able touse that bargaining power to carve out apolitical space he deserves.

DrunkorexiaThe cover pagestory youngsterscutting down onfood to allow formore alcohol con-sumption withoutgaining weight isvery interesting. As

a matter of fact, I know at least half adozen colleagues who follow suchlifestyles. I feel that peer pressure and pop-ular media’s obsession with staying thin isforcing youngsters to follow such practices. One must understand that they need notlook like a reed-thin model to look good.

ANNA POSER TOSONIA, INSULT TO PM

Anna Hazare has chal-lenged Congresspresident Sonia

Gandhi to a debate on LokpalBill to explain why the govern-

ment has shot down severalkey demands of Team Anna. Bydirecting the question at Sonia,

he has reinforced the percep-tion that Prime Minister

Manmohan Singh doesn’t havethe final word on policy. Earlier,

the UPA chairperson hadnudged the Cabinet to clear thefood security Bill despite appre-hensions on the part of severalsenior ministers about the via-

bility of the populist legislation. The Congress president shouldeither take up the reins of thecountry or let the prime minis-

ter function independentlyrather than allowing the high-

est office in the country topbecome a matter of public

ridicule. What the Manmohangovernment needs now is solid

backing from the Congresspresident and not remote con-

trol operation. Let the visionaryprime minister be rememberedfor his contributions to nation-

building rather than being aglorified errand boy for the First

Family.

Differencesin parentsconfuse kids

Dr Kiran Krishnamurti

I seem to be going through a verytough phase with my 2 year old son.He was quite ok till he was 1.5 yearsold but has become exactly oppositeof what he used to be. He wants hisway all the time and if he does notget what he wants, he starts cryingloudly and sometimes even bangshis head on the wall.

My husband and I differ totallyin our parenting methods. I feel it’sok for a child to cry sometimes andmy husband is just the opposite. Sowe end up fighting with each otherand at the end of the day all 3 of usare miserable. I know that all this ispart of growing up and ‘terribletwos’ and all that, but I need helpbetween father and son I think I amgoing crazy and becoming a ner-vous wreck.

Please stay calm, this is a verycommon story in many a household.Firstly, you need to address the issueof your varied parenting styles. Youhave to discuss this in your kid’sabsence and come to a joint andmutual conclusion.

Crying does not harm the childas much as the divergence in parent-ing styles. It is more important thatyou both agree with each other, atleast in front of your son and dealwith your differences later. If youdon’t do this immediately, he will notonly receive confusing inputs, butwill start tone or by denying the childsomething that gives him pleasure.

Do not hit your child. It will onlymake matters worse.

Remember, anger towards chil-dren should always be only simulat-ed and not real.

Smooth, long lustrouslocks are every girl’sdream. Flowing dark hairas shown in advertise-

ments is what every girl lustsafter. It’s the epitome of sensu-ality and feminity. And whatcould be better than to havelovely healthy hair that can bestyled any which way for aninstant new look to suit anyoccasion. But what happenswhen one fine morning youwake up to find clumps of hairfalling out? Despite your bestefforts your beautiful head ofhair now has bald patches andyou are at your wit’s end.

It could probably be alope-cia, a condition where there’seither sudden hair loss leavingthe scalp looking patchy or amore gradual thinning processthat could eventually lead toeverybody’s worst nightmare —baldness.

“Alopecia can occur eitherdue to an infection, it could befungal, or it could be due to anauto immune disease (a con-dition in which the body pro-duces antibodies to fightagainst certain proteinsproduced by it),”explains Dr PrasunDeb, an endocrinologistat Yashoda Hospital. Headds, “This autoimmunerelated alopecia could bemore common in patientswith either diabetes orhypothyroidism.”

“There are threetypes of alopecia thatcommonly occur — dif-fused, alopecia areata andalopecia totalis or alopeciauniversalis. Diffused alope-cia is the more common typeof hair loss that people face. Inthis there could be loss of hairacross the scalp leading to agradual thinning in both menand women but is more com-monly seen in the fairer sex,”says Dr Asna Anjum.

Diffused alopecia is thesedays seen in young adults aswell and the blame could liewith either pollution, dandruff, lack of oil massages and theuse of harsh styling products.

In alopecia areata a personmight find that they have

patchy hair loss on the scalp.Usually due to hormonalchanges in the body and com-monly due to stress, alopeciaareata is a self-limiting condi-tion and normally sets right ina few months with or without

treatment. But it is alopecia totalis and

alopecia universalis that arereally worrisome. While thiscondition cannot really betreated, even the causes are

unknown making it an idio-pathic disease. In alopeciatotalis there is complete hairloss on the scalp leading to per-manent baldness while inalopecia universalis there istotal hair loss from all over thebody including eye brows, beard in men, body hair etc.

“If the cause of alopecia isan infection then treatmentcan be suggested for it.However, if it is an autoim-mune disorder then treatmentis difficult,” says Dr Prasun.

Dr Asna agrees. “While indiffused alopecia we can pre-scribe vitamins, hair oils andprocedures like mesotherapy(locally administering vitaminsdirectly onto the scalp, theycan only limit the hair loss. Notreverse it completely. In alope-cia universalis and totalis how-ever, there is no known treat-ment and it is an irreversiblecondition,” she says.

W hile Indians in generalhave a fixation for bigbottoms and bigger

not have the right to comment onanyone’s body type, going by theaffinity towards skinny models, it ispretty much clear where their loyal-ties lie.

Whatever else be a matter ofdebate we can all agree that by andlarge, India is ruled by Bollywood.

One of the most clichéd but aptexamples here would be how the whole

nation went gaga over actor KareenaKapoor’s size zero.

Young girls barely out of college, were so ‘inspired’ that they started

going to extremes to achieve thesame and in the process ended upharming themselves.

Model Faith Pandey says, “I thinkthe concept of having plus sized modelsto display plus sized clothes is essentialand welcome at the same time. Moreoverbeauty isn’t something that is containedin a 26 inch waist. It is bigger and beyondin the most literal sense. But of course inIndia, like most other things, it will take alonger time to warm up to this idea.Probably because our opinion of beautyis very parochial.”

“It takes time to break away fromthese mental blocks, for example, thecolour bias between fair and dark-skinned models and actors is way betternow but somehow somewhere it stillexists. However, in the West, the number

of large-sized people outnumber those inIndia. So in this regard, not everyone canrelate to what they see,” she adds.

It was perhaps a year ago when thecover of the fashion magazine V wasgraced by plus size model, Crystal Renn, who became an icon for big womeneverywhere. In a fabulous photoshoot, Vput a plus sized and a regular model inthe same clothes and both looked greatin the get-up, both made the clothes lookgood. More and more people abroad arenow opening up to the concept of plussize models but though Indian womenhave always been curvy, we still find itdifficult to accept fuller models.

Designer Sanjay Hingu says, “If youlook at the current scenario, internation-ally the trend of using plus size modelshas only started of late and purely

because of massive criticism and flakfrom the society due to the impact skinnymodels have had on the mindsets ofyoung teenagers who want to get intothis area of work.”

He goes on to add, “Indian womenhave always been curvy and with a goodamount of flesh in appropriate places, the recently released The Dirty Pictureestablishes my faith again in what I justsaid. Some actresses have tried to go thezero figure way but have failed to cast animpression and I am glad because ifteenagers had to start following blindlywhat they see in glossy magazines thanwe will have a society of skeletons mov-ing around us.”

Articles and fashion news about sizezero illustrated with pictures of glam-orous, rail-thin celebrities and modelswhose ribs were countable through theircouture dresses had the shock factor andhad many people up in arms.

“Size zero was a fad and was appreci-ated in both Bollywood and Hollywoodmovies but societies across the worldhave started moving towards healthierand fitter lifestyles and desire women tolook sexier, sensual and smart.

The beauty of a woman lies in hercurves, vibrancy and intelligence andpersonality and not in being rakishly thinand unbalanced,” says internationallycelebrated designer Sanchita Ajjampur.

She goes on to add, “We live in asociety which has a deeply disturbed atti-

tude towards food, nurture and con-sumption; we need to educate youngchildren and girls that their growing bod-ies and normal desires are acceptableand that they must not be starve.

Recent developments in the fashionworld also point to the return of curveson the ramp, with designers going in forfuller models as openers and showstop-pers on the runway, compared to earlierdays, when thinner models ruled thedomain. I would say, we do design for‘real people’ now!”

DESIGNDEVELOPMENT

With its rich heritageand history, confluenceof cultures and uniqueinfluences, Hyderabadhas often been toutedas a delight for archi-

tecture and designenthusiasts. But has

the changing landscapebeen beneficial for the

city? We find out

VS

Padmini C

[email protected]

Few other cities in the countryhave perhaps seen a transfor-mation as dramatic asHyderabad. Once known as

the laid-back city of the Nizams withhistorical and heritage buildingsdotting the streets, it has over thelast decade become Hitec city withits high-rises, mammoth malls andmultiplexes. Locals who rememberthe city of yore will wistfully recallthose cosy independent houseswhich have given way to huge apart-ment complexes, Irani cafes that fellto fine-dining restaurants and mar-ket places which have been replacedby malls.

As pleasing as the progress mightbe for the overall development of thecity, it's been detrimental for design, say experts. Professor Ravi Anandwho teaches at the School ofPlanning and Architecture, JNTU forinstance, is deeply unhappy at thedirection that contemporary archi-tecture in the city has taken. “Today,

there is nothing different, nothinglocal or unique about the structuresthat have come up in the city. Theyare very out of context. These build-ings are so global in nature they canbe found in any part of the world. Itis become a cause for concern for allof us in the industry,” he rues.

But what is it that makes a greatbuilding stand out from the rest?“Great architecture was never madewith financial motivations. But nowthere's no other kind of motivation. There are set patterns around whichdesigners develop. They might beimpressive at first sight but are notplaces you would want to live in or

work at,” feels the professor of archi-tecture.

Sudheer Reddy, principal archi-tect at Kruthica is of a similar opin-ion. “These buildings and structuresare a very real reflection of the con-fusion and the jumble prevalent inour own lives today. It's the story ofevery metro in the country, not justHyderabad. There is no character orsoul to them. Unlike the old historicbuildings that were benchmarks ofdesign, one is not much differentfrom the next, in design or spirit.Only the shapes and sizes differ,” hesays.

The rich and illustrious heritageof the city poses a further challengemaintains Ar. Haresh Lakhani, co-founder of Lakhani Associates. However, all is not lost and that thisis simply a phase in the evolution ofthings, he says. “Rome was not builtin a day. Similarly, a lot of gooddesign and good work is happeningin the city. It's evolving steadily. Sothere are going to be many a inter-esting things to come in the nearfuture but we have to give it time,”he says.

Veteran actor Anupam Kherfeels the new addition toMumbai’s landscape is going tokeep memories alive. “It is agood step towards preservingmemories and will be a veryinteresting way at the same time. It’s going to be a milestone andwill attract lot of attention.” Sowill it have the same significanceas it does in Hollywood or willwe see it forgotten as some ran-

The Hollywood walk of famecame into existence in 1958 andhas been a landmark for touristsand is also an honorary for thestars who have contributed tocinema. The sidewalk alongHollywood Boulevard and VineStreet, California boast of nameslike Michael Jackson, CharlesChaplin, Bryan Adams, AudreyHepburn and many more stars. While this landmark has beenthere from years in the west,Bollywood gets a new thing to gowow and rave about.

This new venture will notonly pay homage to just actorsbut also those who have con-tributed to the industry in anyway. Singer Sunidhi Chauhan onhearing about the new develop-ment only wished that timecould be reversed, she says, “Iwish we could go back in timeand have the names of those leg-endary singers like KishoreKumar and Rafi included as well.

They were the gods of music andif something like this would havehappened at that time, their fansand followers could have felttheir presence through this. Thelegends we lost this year, likeDev Anand and Jagjit Singh, theirpresence will also be sorelymissed. At the same I am gladthat we can now honour the liv-ing stars like Dilip Kumar, LataMangeshkar and many more.”She then goes on to say, “Ourcoming generations will be luckyto see these veterans throughthis and will understand thelegacy that these people left forthem. Better late than never, it’sa great thing to have happenedfor our industry.”

Director Kabir Khan says, “Ithink it’s a great idea and will

add great value to theBollywood brigade. Also, peoplekeep looking at Hollywood walkof fame and are fascinated withthe celebrities there but with thisthey can actually come and payhomage to their favourite starscloser home. It is something dif-ferent and is a new thing fortourists to look out for and iskind of thrilling to get a feel ofthe stars presence.”

Thespians are usuallysceptical about workingwith fresh directors, but

talented actor RajeevKhandelwal has no suchhang-ups. He feels he bene-fits from the debutants’ pas-sion for filmmaking.

For his own big screendebut, Aamir, Rajeev workedunder the direction of firsttimer Rajkumar Gupta. Evenhis second film Shaitan wasdirected by newcomer BejoyNambiar, while his lastrelease Soundtrack washelmed by debutant NeeravGhosh.

“As far as newcomers areconcerned, I invest in some-one who has the knowledgeof filmmaking, someone whohas a great script and contentto offer,” Rajeev said.

“I have worked with peo-ple who had been runningaround with their scripts forfour to five years, wanting tomake a film. I work with newdirectors because I know Iwill benefit from their pas-sion. I am not wary or ner-

vous about it at all,” headded.

Rajeev is a rare exampleof an actor who took a leapfrom the small screen to thebig screen and tasted success. But he says his career pathhas always been unplanned.

The 36-year-old nowwants to do projects whichhave a human connect. “Iwant to do films with humanconnect, but not really issue-based films. I also wish todirect films which havehuman connect to it. I can’tdo projects where my role isnot humane and I don’t evenenjoy watching such films,”Rajeev said.

For now, Rajeev is busyconnecting with commonpeople as the host of the sec-ond season of controversialreality show Sach KaSaamna. Initially, the showwas about people opening uptheir dark secrets on nationaltelevision; for this season, thecentral theme has beenchanged to corruption. IANS

CINEMA

As part of some sort of cinematicarms race, two of 2012’s mosthighly-anticipated blockbusters

conspired to crash the Internet thisweek as millions of people watchedbrand new trailers for ChristopherNolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” andPeter Jackson’s “The Hobbit.” Let’sjust say that Batman and Bilbo sharethe No. 1 spot, as we can’t wait to see

either of them. While “The Hobbit’s”trailer seems to trade primarily onnostalgia (both for the beloved bookand the box office behemoth “Lord ofthe Rings” trilogy), “Rises” is moredetermined to undermine viewers’belief that “everything is going to beOK.” As Bane clearly states (well, sortof clearly), it’s not. And that’s OK byus.

The 2nd annualAthena FilmFestival, described

as a “Celebration ofWomen and Leadership,”is returning toManhattan’s Barnardcampus from February 9-12, 2012. Artistic Directorand co-founder MelissaSilverstein of IndiewireBlog Network’s Womenand Hollywood is pro-gramming again withhelp from this year’s co-chairs: screenwriterDiablo Cody (“Juno,”“Young Adult”), directorMira Nair (“SalaamBombay!” “MonsoonWedding”), producerDebra Martin Chase(“The Sisterhood of theTraveling Pants,” “ThePrincess Diaries”) andBarnard alumna JenniferChristman (ExecutiveDirector of The PictureHouse). “We can’t wait toshare the line-up of filmsand special events thatfocus on inspiring storiesof women leaders,” saidSilverstein.

“I am thrilled to bepart of a festival thatencourages women to usetheir talents to tell com-pelling stories of womenand to support each otheras they face the manyobstacles of getting theirwork made into successfulfilms,” said Diablo Cody.“The Athena Film Festivalbrings to the forefront themany issues women facetoday and celebrates thecourageous women whohelp make a difference.”

Actress Demi Moore is likely to pro-duce a TV show for women. Moorewill launch an interview series,

“The Conversation”, next month, withBritish TV personality Amanda deCadenet as the host.Moore, who recent-

ly split from husband Ashton Kutcher, isa producer of the show, but she mightappear on camera too. “It’s been anemotional year for her, and people wantto hear what she has to say,” a sourcetold New York Daily News.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.
