Andhra Pradesh has failed torepresent in the prestigiousRepublic Day celebrations

for the third time in a row. This is the third successive

year that the government hasfailed miserably even after tryingtwice in vain. The informationdepartment which was responsi-ble for presenting the tableau’s forthe State failed to convinceauthorities as they argued that theState has no new theme to present.Last year, the judges for tableauobserved that the theme wasfocusing on the Telangana and itwas not representing the state. TheState Government presented fourthe mes which were rejected.

Sankranthi was the maintheme but the judges did not likeit. The in-charge of the programme of the informationand public relations departmentconfirmed that they did not get theselection this year also. Even in thesecond meet held recently the

state officials could not impressupon the Delhi judges.

Last year, the theme based onCharminar, Bonalu, Ghusadidance by tribal’s and Etikoppakadance from Visakhapatnam werepresented, but the judges opinedthat the theme must represententire Andhra and not one region

or city. In 2010, Lambada dancewas the theme presented. It wasalso rejected. In 2009, Annamayatheme was presented. But thejudges rejected it as it just signifiedRayalseema Region.

Some sources said that morethan the theme, the late submission was the reason.

Covering their lack of creativityone of the officials said that APdoes not have proper lobbying. But the reality is that we lack creativity and freshness in thetheme.

Changes inCabinet soonPostnoon News

Chief Minister N Kiran KumarReddy is in New Delhi for yet

another bid to convince the highcommand for a Cabinet reshuffle.

The PRP of Chiranjeevi is onhis shoulders. But, more stickingpoints are the question of sometroublesome ministers and induc-tion of new faces. And, he has totake into consideration the hostilityof his rival and APCC chief BotsaSatsyanarayana.

Those whom Kiran wants outare: minister for textiles P ShankarRao, minister for minority welfareAhmedulla and stamps and minis-ter for health DL Ravindra, it isreported. While Shankar Rao’s criti-cism of the CM is an open secret,Kiran wants Ahmedulla out so thathe can induct Mohammed Jani,MLC from Guntur. In RavindraReddy’s place, Kiran wants toinduct MLA T Jayaprakash Reddy. The CM has sought an appoint-ment with AICC general secretaryin-charge of AP Gulam Nabi Azadand the CM may leave for Delhi onTuesday evening, sources said. Ifthe CM returns on Wednesday, onecan expect changes on Thursday.

“Iam an Osmania Univ -ersity student and not aterrorist or a Maoist,”spat Krishank Manne,

OU Students Joint Action Council(JAC) spokesperson. “Whateverdemonstration we stage is withinthe campus, why then target uslike criminals?”

But, he does not know that thestretch from the NCC gates to theback gate of OU is often consid-ered a battle ground. This battlebegan in November 2009 in OUand has seen some bloody warsbetween the students and lawenforcers. But, of late it has lost itssteam. Q. OU is a prestigious university. How then did it earn such abloody name for itself?

On November 29, 2009 KCRbegan his fast and we took out arally. It was all peaceful untilStephen Ravindra, IPS officer,lathi-charged us hitting, each stu-dent more than 25 times. That iswhen we retaliated. They had lath-is, teargas and rubber bullets. What did students have? Nothing, except good old stones. We haveclear evidence and visuals frommedia clips that show the policewere the first to start. And, todefend ourselves, we resorted tostone pelting.

There were days when womenconstables were not there and yetthey would drag girls to the wait-ing van. Policemen themselvestorched our vehicles parked in thecampus. On February 14, 2011,when I was examining my bikethat had been damaged by thepolice, a couple of them suddenlycame up from behind and beat meup.

The police force had also dam-aged media vehicles and mediapersonnel as well. The home min-ister accepted their mistake andissued compensation but not oncehave they enquired or heard outour side of the story. Q. Recently, when a few OU stu-dents were watching the movieAarakshan the police arrestedthem. Is it true?

Yes. We went for theIndependence Day celebrationeven out there we were notallowed. Anywhere we go we werebeing chased and arrested. Why?Even at the recent Hyderabad 10 K

run, 400 OU students went for themarch and were arrested. We didnot cause any violence. Seeing usthe public started shouting ‘JaiTelangana’, apart from that we didnot create any ruckus or resort toany violence. But yet we werearrested. Why? Q. Who was responsible for thedamage during the one millionmarch?

Around 500 students camemarching from the OU campus tothe Tank Bund. If we wanted wecould have vandalised the wholeCity but we did not resort to vio-lence. Later, when KCR walked in,the violence started. Students, advocates and general public werethere for four hours and nothinghappened. However, only once thepolitical force arrived all problemsstarted. This is something that oneneeds to think about.Q. Why do we see so many jointaction committees today?

When KCR started his fast, simultaneously many studentcommunities came together andcreated a JAC for the sake of unity.Students emerging as a politicalpower is what politicians did notwant. They wanted students toremain only as pressure groups.Hence to split the power theycame up with different joint actioncommittees.

On Dec 23, 2010 they createdpolitical joint action committees. This joint action committee hasonly TRS and very few BJP leaders. No other party is a part of politicalJAC. Secondly, there are severaldifferences between KCR andKodandaram who is heading thepolitical JAC.

In a democracy power shouldbe vested in all parts of a move-ment. Ideally, there shouldn’t beone leader. However, here by mak-ing small units, we are givingpower to one person who, in thename of democracy is creatinganarchy. KCR and his sons are cre-ating numerous JACs and are drift-ing away from the main move-ment. Today, everybody is workingtowards their own motives and

interests. I strongly believe thatany revolution can be achievedonly when there is unity.Q. Why do OU students have anegative image in the society?

On media channels there arepanel discussions every day, politi-cians from all party are called butstudents are always ignored. Be it anegotiation or a discussion, it isonly politicians at the forefront.Stude nt leaders are never a part ofany of these activities. That’s howwe have been projected by themedia.

The name university itself isvery universal in nature. Anyonecan enter a university but politi-cians are misusing this freedom. They are the ones who haveturned OU into a battle field.Headlines in the media read, ‘agi-tation at OU campus.’ They do notinvestigate who is responsible forthis. Today the OU campus andstudents have a bad name.Because of this we the students arerestricted only to the campusgates. We are being treated like ter-rorists. We are scholars, we do notwant to hold stones, we want a micbut the media has not portrayedthis image.Q. Why do you think there is adelay in achieving a separatestate?

I blamed the Congress party

for this delay. They are draggingthe issue. And also because ofKCR’s double standards. He is con-tradicting his own statements. Heoscillates between strikes andelections.Q. Professor Kodandaram, whomis he supporting?

Being an OU professor he sup-ports politicians and not his ownstudents. What morals is he teach-ing his students by supporting thepoliticians and not us.

One of the primary reasons forthe failure of rail roko is him. Hestands only at one place and dic-tates terms. He is using our shoul-ders to rest his guns and fire. He isnot our head but yet, he is dictat-ing terms to us.Q. What’s the January 17 agitationplan?

In the past, we have been atthe fore front in declaring bandhs, but now we will wait and notblindly agree to whatever thepoliticians order us to do.

We are students we can doanything for a separate state butbefore all that we need to finishour exams. Both a separate stateand our academics are importantto us. Nearly 90 per cent of stu-dents in OU are from a poor back-ground. We cannot risk our aca-demics. We have international stu-dents and the bandh affects themas well.

As a student community werealised that bandhs are not need-ed and we will not support them.

This time we want politiciansto fall in one line and take up theagitation, something that theyhave not been doing. Our supportis there with them but first ouracademics will be given priority. We will support all the parties butnot any one party. Post exams wewill be part of the agitation.Secondly, we will take this move-ment out of the OU campus. Wewill spread it all over.

Plan for OU student JACKrishank says, “There is a civic

war happening via various forms. We will make it a mob agitation,we have done this earlier too butthis time we have decided to act ina mature manner. Very soon citi-zens will lash back at politicians, everyone will be on the streets. Weare just waiting for the frustrationto reach its peak. We may be downbut not completely out.”

He adds, “We have been on thefore front of the agitation and oncea separate Telangana is achievedwe will float a separate party.”

Politicians and police have cheatedus, says Telangana students JAC chief

Students are made fodder for politicking politicians and their minions, the police, says Krishank Manne who suffered police brutalities and political chicanery. He opens his mind to Postnoon

Christopher Kloeble, notedGerman author and screen-play writer takes inspiration

from even the most mundaneobjects, people, or even a sentencehe reads in a book. In a tete-a-tetewith Postnoon, he reveals his pas-sion for writing, and how buildingwords into sentences balances himmentally.

“When I was in the US to partic-ipate in a writing program, I met anIndian journalist who invited me tocome to India — that is whatbrought me here," he explains hisvisit to the country.

He shares his tryst with writingand tells, "My father Til Erwig was anactor and a screenwriter himself. Sohe was open to me becoming a writ-er, and chart my own course of life."

Chri stopher believes that he islucky being German because of thespace that one gives to professionslike writing, as compared to manyothers. "In Germany, the govern-ment supports you, and that makesit easier for one to decide tobecome a writer one fine morning,

and five years later, to do some-thing else," he says.

Interestingly, Chri st opher doesnot like to plan his stories. He says,"Each day is a new day, and I like tosee what comes the next day. I like tostudy the psychology of people andhow they react to different situa-tions."

Christopher has also forayedinto screenplay writing with the filmInclusion and contributes to theGerman newspapers Die Zeit andTageszeitung.

This winner of numerous laurelsand awards sha res his experienceson his first visit to Hyderabad. "Iwent to a show yesterday where twoindividuals were competing witheach other in dance. It was interest-ing to me, as in the country I comefrom, people are more tense — theyare conscious of who might be look-ing at them. And here, I sensed peo-ple having a lighter approachtowards life. I have also visited theCharminar and seen people fromdifferent religions there. Now, I get abetter idea of the problems in bring-ing people tog ether when I see thesheer magnitude of the numbers.

However, after coming here

from New Delhi, I see that the city isless polluted and much warmerthan the Capital." The author ofAmong Loners, If someone knocks, and 'The eternal three', is all set tolaunch his new book AlmostEverything Very Fast in March thisyear, at the Leipzig Book Fair inGermany.

Einstein once said, 'I have no special talent, I am onlypassionately curious'. Novelist and screenwriterChristopher Kloeble is a picture of humility as hedescribes his life and City experience to Postnoon.

KOLKATA: Nearly eight months into her stint, WestBengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Mondayinducted two new ministers and reshuffled of portfo-lios, triggering shrill protests from alliance partnerCongress after secretariat sources revealed that wingsof two of its ministers had been clipped.

However, no list of ministerial portfolio was madeavailable to the media till late at night.

According to secretariat sources, Congress minister of state Manoj Chakraborty who hadattacked the chief minister when she asked his partyto walk out of the alliance if it so desired, lost his twoportfolios parliamentary affairs and small and cottage industries.

Chakraborty’s party colleague Abu Hena, the cab-inet minister for fisheries and food processing, wasdivested of the food processing portfolio which wentto Trinamool’s Ujjal Biswas who presently is in chargeof youth affairs.

Both Chakraborty and Hena are fromMurshidabad district, a Congress stronghold whereBanerjee's bete noire and Congress MP AdhirChowdhury holds sway.

Chowdhury, along with Raiganj MP DeepaDasmunshi had led the verbal assault on the chiefminister during the recent Congress-Trinamool spatover renaming of Indira Bahvan, death of farmersand beating of a college principal by Trinamoolactivists in Raganj.

“This is completely unwarranted and unaccept-able to us. We have been sent to the cabinet by thehigh authorities of our party, by (Congress chief)Sonia Gandhi and not by any Tom, Dick or Harry. There is too much dictatorship, it is high time wemoved out of the alliance,” he said.

Chakrabarty also said Congress will contest theupcoming Panchayat elections in West Bengal on itsown.

“There is no question of alliance for thePanchayat elections. We will contest on our own”.

“I had dared to oppose the government’s move torename the Indira Bhavan, that’s why I have beenmeted out this treatment. No matter what I will con-tinue to oppose anything unjust,” said Chakrabartyadding that he will consult his leaders before deciding on accepting whatever the ministry offeredto him. IANS

Ayodhya case accusedoppose CBI pleaNEW DELHI: Bharatiya JanataParty (BJP) leader L K Advani andhis colleagues accused in the1992 Babri Masjid demolitioncase have told the SupremeCourt that a CBI plea that chal-lenged the quashing of conspira-cy charges against them amou -nted to abuse of process of law.

The Central Bureau ofInvestigation (CBI) has chal-lenged an Allahabad High Courtorder that upheld the quashingof conspiracy charges againstthem by a Lucknow SpecialCourt (Ayodhya Prakaran).

In their common reply,Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi,Uma Bharti, Vinay Kathiyar andother accused contended thatthe filing of the appeal by the CBIwas barred by time and was anabuse of the process of law.

The apex court bench ofJustice HL Dattu and Justice C KPrasad took exception toAdditional Solicitor GeneralVivek Tankha describing thematter as a famous Babri Masjidcase and said that “it was neitherfamous nor infamous but anincident that had happened”.

The case would come up forfinal hearing March 27.

As senior counsel RaviShankar Prasad, appearing forAdvani and other BJP leaders, told the court that the matterwas barred by time, the courtsaid it would hear the matter.

The Allahabad High CourtMay 20, 2010, upheld the May 4,2001, order of the special court(Ayodhya Prakaran) droppingthe conspiracy charge againstthe former deputy prime minis-ter and his party colleagues inv -olved in the Ayodhya agitation.

The high court had also dis-missed the revision petition bythe CBI.

BAGHDAD: While thechances of an all-out sectarianwar in Iraq appear slim, vio-lence will remain high and atrisk of worsening if the coun-try’s leaders do not end theirpolitical standoff, experts say.

Iraq has suffered severalmass-casualty attacks directlytargeting communities or sectsin the wake of last month’s USwithdrawal and coincidingwith a political row that haspitted the Shiite-led govern-ment against the main Sunni-backed bloc.

But though the threat ofcivil war is often raised in talkson the country’s future, analystssay an improved Iraqi securityforce coupled with greaterSunni Arab participation in pol-itics and popular opposition tocommunal violence make sucha scenario unlikely.

“This conflict between theleaders will continue,”Mahmud Othman, an indepen-dent MP from the autonomousKurdish region said.

“But fortunately, the peopleare more responsible than theleaders, so I don’t think that’s areal possibility.”

“They have failed the test —they cannot rule the country,

they do not care about nationalinterests ... In the last year, wehave had what was called apartnership government, butreally it has been a crisis.”

Othman warned that secu-rity in Iraq was “much better atthis time last year” and that theattacks would carry on if thepolitical row festered.

Politics and violence areoften seen as linked in Iraq, asinsurgents exploit political fis-sures to exacerbate instability.

Shortly after US forces com-pleted their withdrawal on

December 18, authoritiescharged Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi, a Sunni Arab, withrunning a death squad.

Hashemi’s Iraqiya bloc hassince largely boycotted parlia-ment and cabinet, while he hasstayed put in the autonomousKurdish region of northern Iraqthat has so far declined to handhim over to Baghdad.

In the weeks since the rowerupted, Iraq has suffered aspate of violence that has killedmore than 200 people, includ-ing high-casualty attacks on

December 22, January 5 andJanuary 14. The latter two solelytargeted Iraq’s majority Shiitecommunity.

Such attacks, which result inmass deaths, pose a greaterthreat to security than targetedassassinations that insurgentsand militias have pursued inthe past because of emotionsthey stir, according to JohnDrake, a security analyst withprivate security firm AKEGroup.

AKE figures indicate thenumber of attacks in the pastsix weeks are around 50 percenthigher than in the same perioda year ago, but Drake cautionedthat last year’s figure did notinclude the Shiite mourning rit-uals of Arbaeen or the after-math of the US pullout.

The London-based analystwarned: “It’s still a fragile politi-cal system. If people have faithin it, then they will engage in itto resolve their grievances anddisputes.”

“If they feel the politiciansare ineffectual or corrupt theywill try other methods. Themethods that are tried and test-ed in Iraq are tribal methods, which are incompatible withthe state, and violence.” AFP

The concept of Aakash con-cept was designed Prem KKalra, Director, IIT Jodhpur.

They gave the contract to

Datawind, a UK-based company, for integration. Quad Electronicsbased out of Hyderabad is thesole manufacturer of Aakash forDatawind.

As of now, the product is ontrial. Certain number of unitswere given to students to findout how the product is behaving. The product will be fine-tunedAakash will be made betterbased on the feedback, saidRaminder Singh Soin, ManagingDirector, QUAD ElectronicSolutions.

Initially, IIT Jodhpur liked theAakash. They are looking for arugged and upgraded productnow after the feedback. They do

not want Aakash asa brand to fail. They want a betterprocessor for high-

er speeds andcapacitive screen. It doesn’t cost

more than $50even after water

resistance is taken into consideration, he

added.

He said, the initial order forQuad Electronics is one lakhunits. Out of which, it has manu-factured 30,000 units fromOctober. These units are sup-plied to the Datawind. It is soongoing to start manufacturing ofupgraded version according tothe requirements of Datawind. The upgraded version is on thedesign stage and may come outin March.

Talking about the expansion,Quad Electronics has the infras-tructure to support manufactur-ing up to 5,000 units from its pre-sent 700 units a day. It alldepends on how fast theyarrange the money for theworking capital. Talks aregoing on and hope thiswill happen soon. Ifthings get late, thedemand for theproduct may go off.“We all should workfast to get the productout at the earliest possible.”

The supply chain andfinance costs are the biggestproblems for electronics manu-

facturing services (EMS) industryin India. Manufacturers aredependent on countries likeChina and South East Asiancountries for the componentsmanufacturing.

This is raising the costs to thecompanies. There is a need tocreate an ecosystem for manu-facturing and supplying of parts.Otherwise, India cannot grow ina bigger way in the EMS indus-try. The work-ing capital

costs andinterest

rates are muchlower in countries

like Taiwan, Korea

and China than the interest ratesin India. The companies in Indiapay four times higher interestrates and have to compete withthem on a global scale, Singhadded.

“India has strong intellectual, human resource. The govern-ment has to invest in ‘Researchand Development’ to give a lot ofsupport to innovation. Indiansare working for global electron-ics and space companies andproving themselves. A tabletdoes not cost more than 10 dol-lars in high volumes if right

ecosystem is created. We aretrying to indigenous theproduct and bring downthe costs with local LCD

and other component manu-facturing,” he added.

Talking about the QuadElectronics, he said, it is a Rs.100crore company with 1,000employees. The growth rate is 20to 25 per cent year after year. Italso manufactures lighting prod-ucts and computer peripheralsfor multinational companies andexport to Europe and the USA.

Its’ the stuff legends are made of — theidea that you wish for something, sendthat wish out into the cosmos and believethat the universe takes charge to make it

happen for you. I spent the last day of 2011thinking of wishes, legends, stories that livedown the generations and, of course, of thatstring of hope each of us invariably learns tohold on to. We befriend this hope in the mosttrying of circumstances and draw strengthfrom it to survive the mundane of daily life.Though life is largely made up of the mun-dane, opportunities to let the faith within ustake over are not that common.

Amid the restless history and stark beautyI came face to face with in north Karnatakavillage Hampi, I was struck by how believershad not missed an opportunity to perpetuatea myth. They were taking a chance but losingnothing in the bargain. The place was theLotus Mahal on a largely cloudy Saturdayafternoon, overcrowded with troupes ofschoolchildren on, perhaps, their annual pic-nic from the nearby village.

I walked through the temple and palacecomplexes imagining stories of the kings andqueens of the Vijayanagar Empire hiding inthe folds of the ruins — behind the carvedstone pillars, beneath intricate structures andin the many layers that make up the soul ofHampi. At one corner of this very large com-plex stood the magnificent Lotus Mahal. Iwalked around the structure, trying to imag-ine what the place might have looked like inits heyday – with kings and queens strollinghere majestically in their royal silk robes. I lin-gered for some time and found a corner fromwhere I could get a strategic view of theMahal.

At the corner, I spotted somethingstrange. Small stones (mostly picked up fromthe ruins) were stacked up in piles of 3 and 4all over what once might have been a largeroom. It was not a huge pit and every fewinches, stones were piled up. I overheard agentleman passing by say that the belief is tomake a wish, stack up some stones here, and

the wish will come true. With me were four friends, of which two

decided not to do anything about it. Twoother friends made a wish and, in a ritual ofsorts, stacked the stones. I wasn’t sure. Herewe were, listening to a passerby and taking hisword for it. What if it was one big sham? Ibegan wondering: even then, so what if it is?It’s faith that makes it or mars it. We’re only

using the stones as a physical, outer worldexpression of our inner belief system.

The romance of this idea got a grip on me.I went back, stacked three stones one on topof the other, made a wish and walked away. The fact now, however, is that I cannotremember what I wished for. And that’s prob-ably how faith works best. If it’s meant to be, itwill be. On this, I have complete faith.

CHINA-LIKE CENSORwill take us backward

Social networking websitesare being pulled up by

the Delhi High Court fortheir non-compliance with

orders to remove ‘objectionable’content that may hurt feelings

of religious communities or per-sons. The court has also warned

of a ‘China-like censorship’ ifthey fail to do so. We have

come a long way since the pre-Independence British censorshipand the Emergency era censor-

ship. Every opinion in publicdomain is for or against someentity or the other. China is a

real life example of anOrwellian 1984 system —

where projected image is a farcry from the rot within. Insteadof allowing wafer-thin sensitivi-ties to dictate the limits of criti-

cism, we should emulate themodel of Scandinavian nationswhere freedom of expression is

paramount. Suppressing criti-cism doesn’t bode well for a

democracy, and China definitelyis not the way.

WASHINGTON: Iron plays a vitalrole in the development of thebrain — too little can result in cog-nitive problems, too much pro-motes degenerative diseases such asAlzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Iron deficiency is the most com-mon nutritional deficiency world-wide, causing poor cognitiveachievement in school-aged chil-dren. Now it has been found toaffect the brain’s physical structureas well.

Paul Thompson, professor ofneurology at the University ofCalifornia Los Angeles, and col-leagues measured levels of transfer-rin, a protein that transports ironthroughout the body and brain, inadolescents.

Since both a deficiency and anexcess of iron can negatively impactbrain function, the body’s regulationof iron transport to the brain is cru-cial, the journal Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sciencesreports.

When iron levels are low, theliver produces more transferrin forincreased iron transport. Theresearchers wanted to knowwhether brain structure in healthyadults was also dependent on trans-ferrin levels, according to aCalifornia statement.

“We found that healthy brainwiring in adults depended on hav-ing good iron levels in your teenageyears,” said Thompson, member ofCalifornia’s Lab of Neuro Imaging.

“This connection was a lotstronger than we expected, espe-cially as we were looking at peoplewho were young and healthy —none of them would be considerediron-deficient. We also found a con-nection with a gene that explainswhy this is so. The gene itself seemsto affect brain wiring, which was abig surprise,” he said.

Thompson’s findings are basedon MRI scans on 615 healthy young-adult twins and siblings, who hadan average age of 23.

By averaging the subjects’ trans-ferrin levels, which had beenassessed repeatedly — at 12, 14 and16 years of age — the researchersestimated iron availability to thebrain during adolescence,Thompson said.

The situation is similar for everyAlzheimer’s patient’s family. A form ofdementia, Alzheimer’s affects a per-son’s memory, behaviour and cogni-tive abilities. What’s worse is, it getsworse gradually over time, making itextremely difficult to cope with forboth the patient and his/her family.

“While the exact causes ofAlzheimer’s Disease are not known, there are certain risk factors associat-ed with the condition,” says DrAmitav Ray, consultant neurosurgeon

at Apollo Hospital, adding,“Alzheimer’s as we know is one of thecauses of pre-senile dementia. But itis not a normal part of ageing.”

Risk FactorsAlzheimer’s is generally related to

age, although it is not a normal part ofageing. Having a family history of ADcan also put you at higher risk. Thereare certain genes like that are linkedto AD. “According to some studies, lifestyle habits like smoking, alcoholconsumption and failing to stimulatethe brain can also be some of thecauses of AD,” says Dr Sudhir Kumar,a neurologist.

Signs to watch out forThe signs usually point at cogni-

tive difficulties and mental function. Some of the early signs of AD include:n Difficulty performing tasks that take

some thought, but used to comeeasily, such as simple calculations, playing complex games (such asbridge), and learning new informa-tion or routines

n Getting lost on completely familiarroutes

n Trouble naming familiar objects orrecalling names

n Finding it difficult to evoke interestto do things that one previouslyenjoyed, mood swings

n Misplacing itemsn Personality changes and loss of

Eat from a red plate to lose weight: Study Why do we fumble at times in recognising faces?LONDON: People who eat from a red plateor drink from red cups cut their food intake by40 percent, says a new study.

The study carried out by German and Swissresearchers said the colour red may encouragediners to avoid snacking because it is commonlyassociated with the idea of “danger, prohibitionand stop”, the Daily Mail reported.

The researchers suggested the governmentsand food industry could use red packaging onunhealthy foods as a deterrent, and could evenuse red colour in pubs to prevent people fromdrinking too much.

In the study, 41 male students were askedto drink tea from cups marked with red or bluelabels. They drank 44 per cent less from cupswith red labels.

Another 109 people were given 10 pretzels

each on either a red, blue or white plate. Thosewith a red plate ate fewer pretzels.

The results were published in the journalAppetite. IANS

LONDON: Do you easily recognise every-one you’ve ever met, or do you struggle, evenwith familiar faces? It is already known thatwe are better at recognising faces from ourown race but researchers have only recentlyquestioned how we assimilate the informationwe use to recognise people. New research bythe University of Nottingham’s MalaysiaCampus has shown that when it comes torecognising people, the Malaysian Chinesehave adapted their facial recognition techniques to cope with living in a multicultur-al environment. Chrystalle Tan, doctoral stu-dent in psychology at Nottingham-Malaysia,who led the study, said: “The traditional viewis that people recognise faces by looking inturn at each eye and then the mouth.”

“While Westerners are learning what each

separate part of the face looks like — a strat-egy that could be useful in populations wherehair and eye colour vary dramatically, main-land Chinese use a mixture of both techniquessuggesting an increased familiarity with other-race faces which enhances their recognitionabilities,” said Tan.“ The ability to recognisedifferent faces may have social and evolutionary advantages. touch withnews to live longer

LONDON: People whostay up-to-date with newsand current affairs aremore health-conscious andwill live longer, says a newstudy.

The study found thatpeople who were mostexposed to newspaper, television and the internethad healthier diets thanthose who were less wellinformed, the Daily Mailreported.

More than 1,000 adultswere interviewed in thestudy.

The researchers foundthat people most exposedto news and mass mediaconsumed a healthier diet, with greater quantities offruit and fish that reducedthe risk of obesity, heartdisease and cancer.

Past research has oftensuggested that mass mediacan have a negative impacton health.

For instance, TV viewing has been linked tophysical inactivity andsnacking, the major riskfactors for obesity andheart disease.

But the latest findingssuggest that TV programmes, addressinghealth issues, can alsomake people more healthconscious.

The participants completed a questionnaireon mass media usage, fromTV viewing to newspaperand magazine reading andsurfing the internet, whichwas then analysed along-side medical, lifestyle anddietary data.

Findings showed people more inquisitiveabout current affairs hadbetter diets.

Scientist Giovanni deGaetano supported thecontribution of mass mediain increasing awareness

about health.“Information delivered

by mass media may appearfragmented or imprecise, especially when we talkabout health and preven-tion. Our study has howev-er provided data whichmay turn out to be veryuseful in a period in whichto combat obesity increase, unhealthy dietary habitsand diffused laziness weare urged to find new waysto communicate health.”

“We should stop beingsuspicious of mass media. The next step will be toevaluate the single sourcesof information and to studythe changes that the inter-net is introducing in theway people, mainly theyoungest, get informed onhealth topics.”

As we walk into theempty open-air stadi-um in the afternoon,

we see the four talentedmusicians doing the soundcheck to ensure that theirmusical presentation remainsa memorable experience forthe city-folk. Our request fora short interview waspromptly accepted by theband, and we began our con-versation. It took us no timeto realize that their day start-ed with an early morningtour of Hyderabad. There wasabsolutely no sign of fatigue, and even if there ever was, itwas but well camouflaged.

They call themselves, TheTriotonos and combine thegenres of Latin Jazz,

Flamenco and World Music tocreate a music that is experi-mental and new-age by defi-nition. Speaking a commonlanguage to them is not asimportant as understandingthe grammar of the musicthat they play. Max Clouth, the guitarist is German,Marc-Inti Männel Saavedraon the bass is half Bolivianand half German, Anup Joshi, the tabla player hails fromPune, and Vaibhav Wavikar, the youngest band member isfrom Mumbai. As the fourmusicians share their experi-ences with us, we realize thattheir chance encounter wasmore than just a casual meet-ing — it was meant to be forthe love of music.

Marc's foray into musicstarted on the piano at 13,and when he was

asked to play the base for aband in college, he readilyaccepted. Max handled hisfirst guitar when he wasseven, and by 15, he foundhimself practicing moreoften. Anup tutored withUstad Alla Rakha Khan andthen with Zakir Hussain.Vaibhav who iconizes TrilokGurthu worked with the likesof Dave Weckl and GregoryHutchinson. Pursuing thelast year in an advertisingcourse, Vaibhav displays hismodesty when he expresseshis belief that he is yet tolearn a lot in music.

We asked the band onhow they co-ordinate theirmusical gigs living in differ-ent parts of the world. Thereis a thunderous laughter, after which Max tells us, “It isincredible, but all I can say is

that it just happens. There aretwo periods in the year whenwe come together. Themonths of December, Januaryand February are when wework together in India.” Max,who has been living in Indiafor the last two years adds,“Marc and I do a lot of musictogether, but in India, weneed to book a place sixmonths well in advance.”Adds Anup, “The only onemissing here is Marc and weare pestering him to comehere. And if he does, therewill more music than ever.”

On how the two Germanmusicians find India, Maxopines, “Living in this coun-try for two years has beenexciting and challenging tome. There is nothing pre-dictable in the country here, unlike in Germany where

everything is so organized tothe point of becoming bor-ing.” This is the first time thatTriotonos is performing inHyderabad. On their firstimpression of the city, thefour members of the band areall praise. Says, Marc, “Theroads are good, and the her-itage places we went to arejust amazing. We love the city, and are excited about today'sevening performance.”

Max and Marc teachmusic when they are notplaying it, Anup owns a tablainstitute in Pune and Vaibhavenjoys doing his gigs in localpubs when he is not studying. And the four together believethat they speak the mostbeautiful language of music, that is perhaps not under-stood by all but definitelyexperienced.

When two Germans and two Indians chanced upon each other, they found a common love — music.

HatsOff!

Not so much apopular accessoryamong Indian menbut hats spellsophistication, comfort andstyle forthose whoknow howto wear it

Sana [email protected]

Back in the 1900s, onlybeggars were seen bare-headed. Up until WorldWar II, rarely was a man

of class and status seen withouta hat on his head. The hat wasas much a part of his wardrobeas his starched shirts, hisleather belts or his silk ties. Hatswere given quite a bit of impor-tance with their names rich incharacter and historical in asso-ciation like the bowler, or derby, with the rigid shape of anupended bean pot, was giventhe name after a 19th-centuryEnglish earl who was known tohave popularised the style orthe fedora, whose name camefrom a play, written for SarahBernhardt by the Frenchdramatist Victorien Sardou.

Then the hat went the wayof the dodo with veteran fash-ion icons swearing that it wasPresident John F. Kennedy whoput a full stop to the trend.Whatever the reason may bemen’s hats can be a very fash-

ionable accessory for any outfit.Designer Zubin Vakil believesthat even though India is atropical country, the hat cultureis far from being popular here.“There is no such thing asdressing culture in India.Wearing a hat is so sophisticat-ed. The vibes that a man whowears a hat exudes is that ofhim being well-travelled, edu-cated and someone who is wellupdated in terms of fashion.”

“But in India, we makefun of people who wearhats,” he rues.

Hat-friendly entertainerslike Justin Timberlake, Neo andUsher have helped acquaintyoungsters with the idea thathats might be cool, ergo mak-ing them a popular accessory. In cold climate, a warm winterhat is a must or a Harris TweedIvy cap which makes for a goodhead gear on a sunny day.

With the variety of choicesand styles out there, men hatshave seen resurgence in recentyears. Designer Neelam Ashleybelieves that not everyone cancarry a hat. “Personally I love

hats. But it depends solely onyour structure. Not every mancan look good wearing a hat. Itshould suit his personality anddetermine his attitude,” saysNeelam, adding, “The fedorais a trendsetting icon. Theladies love a well dressed guyin a fedora. Its a nice semi-casual hat but its not thateasy to pull off either. Menwho are tall can pull it off veryeasily. For anyone shorter, itwill just eclipse his heighteven more.”

It is often said thatwomen judge men based onthe kind of shoes they wear. While shoes may be coatedwith mud or even look wornout, hats take over the role ofmaking you look stylish andreasonably smart.

Remember: Mostwomen like men in stylishhats which do not bearschool mascot logos orcarry beer endorsements. Thus, a hat – a real hat – iswhat counts to be a sureshot winter in yourwardrobe this season.

Remakes have always been an integral

part of Venkatesh’s 26 year oldcareer. The good part about suchfilms is that he makes almost any

story his own and delivers endearing perfor-mances. Right from Chanti to the recent

Adavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule, the actorhas been riding high on his ability to evoke

sympathy from the audience for the charac-ters he portrays on screen. His latest film

Bodyguard is no different. Directed byGopichand Malineni, the film is a faithful

remake of the original Malayalam version ofthe same name. Trisha is Venkatesh’s co-star

in the film and it’s her third film with theactor after Adavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule

and Namo Venkatesha. Venkatesh stars as Venkatadri, a body-

guard by profession. His uncle sends him toVaradarajula Naidu (Prakash Raj) under thepretext that there’s a threat to Varadarajula

Naidu’s life.Venkatadri considers Naidu as hissaviour and immediately goes on the mission.

Keerthi (Trisha), daughter of VaradarajulaNaidu and Swathi (Saloni) are thick friends

and study together in the same college. WhenVaradarajula Naidu realises Keerthi’s life hasbeen threatened, he appoints Venkatadri as

her bodyguard. The rest of the story is aboutwhat happens next when Venkatadri ends up

studying in Keerthi's college.Unlike most other remakes in his career,

Venkatesh lets Trisha hog the limelight formost part of the film. He dazzles in a couple

of action sequences and tickles the funnybone quite a few times in the first half of thefilm where most part of the story happens in

a college. There’s even a scene whereVenkatesh and Ali dress up like women to

enter a women’s hostel in search of ananonymous caller. Moments like these make

sure that the film has enough humour beforeboth Venkatesh and Trisha tug hearts in the

second half of the movie. In the film, Keerthiposes as an anonymous caller and distracts

Venkatadri so that he loosens up a bit. At onepoint of time, Keerthi realises that

Venkatadri has immense respect for her andfalls for him. Venkatadri never finds out who

the anonymous caller is until the very endand that twist is sure to take the viewers by

surprise, if this is the first time they arewatching the film.

Bodyguard isn’t the kind of film whichwould make you think or melt your hearts,

but it has a bit of everything to keep youglued to your seats. On the other side, the

love story between Venkatadri and Keerthidrags on a tad bit too long; however, a well

etched climax saves the day. Both Venkateshand Trisha deliver good performances and theduo share great on-screen chemistry especial-

ly in the songs. Saloni, who plays a crucialrole in the film, is good and it’s a pity that we

don’t get to see her more often. Prakash Raj,Subbaraju, Ali and Pragathi Rajkumar do jus-

tice to their roles.Gopichand Malineni does a decent job in

terms of remaking a successful film. The per-formances are natural and Gopichand han-

dles the emotional scenes quite well.Thaman’s music is good and a few songs are

quite melodious. Kona Venkat’s dialogues arenoteworthy.

Bodyguard makes for a good watch if youhaven’t seen the other versions. More than the

plot, it’s the performances of the lead castwhich manage to hold the film together. Fewthings never get boring and Venkatesh’s per-

formance is among them. Don’t besurprised ifyou see the person next to you wiping his or

her tears in the middle ofthe film.

“No matter how good anactor you are, if you don’t havestrong content, you can’t doanything. And even if you are avery bad actor and if you havesolid content, you will manageto do something. That’s the

point,” said Akshaye, who hasbeen in the industry for the past15 years.

The actor, who started off asa main stream actor withHimalay Putra in 1997, hasproved his versatility with filmslike Taal, Dil Chahta Hai andGandhi My Father. Many of hisfilms didn’t do well at the boxoffice, but the actor is unper-

Shooting Har Pal with ShineyAhuja may not have been anexperience worth cherishingfor Preity Zinta. But the

actress, who had apparently vowedto stay away from all things Shiney, has now decided to promote theirfilm together.

Confirming this, Shiney says:“We’re looking at May or June forrelease because before that Preity isbusy with the IPL (Indian PremierLeague).”

“As far as I’m concerned, therewas never any problem with Preity.

She’s a lovelyperson.

Shiney’s got into trouble afterhis maid filed a complaint saying heraped her. The actor was arrestedon June 15, 2009, after prelimi-nary medical tests on the girlconfirmed sexual assault.

Shiney refuses toaccept that the

makers of hisstalled

Actress Angelina Jolie man-aged to get a promise fromSpanish director PedroAlmodovar during an event

in Los Angeles for directors compet-ing for the Golden Globe for best for-eign language film that he wouldinclude her in one of his future pro-jects. Jolie interrupted an interviewshe was doing at the entrance ofHollywood’s Egyptian Theatre to askAlmodovar, who was arriving, for arole in one of his future films.

“When are you going to give me apart? Someday?” Jolie asked thedirector of Hable con ella (2002).“Don’t worry, you’re young,” a sur-prised Almodovar replied. “Butyou promise that someday?” Joliesaid. “Yes, absolutely. This is acommitment in front of the cam-eras,” Almodovar said, remind-ing the actress that they met inLos Angeles when she hadjust finished Girl,Interrupted (1999) and hehad released Todo sobremi madre (1999).

Jolie and Almodovarwon Oscars for thosefilms, with theAmerican actressgarnering theAcademyAward forBest

Supporting Actress and the Spanishdirector winning the Oscar for bestforeign film.

“I love her,” Almodovar said later, adding that he was working on a pro-ject set in New York that could befilmed in the US in English if “theright script” can be found.

Actress Naomie Harris, whoplays field agent Eve inupcoming James Bond

movie Skyfall”, initially thought thatshe is not right for the part. “To be

honest, I don’t think I’d be very goodat such a role. What drew me to this

was the opportunity to play a newkind of Bond Girl,” Harris, 35, was

quoted as saying.

“In 2012, there’s a need to havefemale characters who are equal tothat. Otherwise it would be totally

imbalanced and no one would careabout the relationships Bond has. I

love the way it’s developed in thatway. Those Bond Girls in the sixties

and seventies might have been goodback then, but they wouldn’t be seen

as very PC now,” she added.

Happy Birthday Jim Carrey!

This is an actor who canmake you cry as easily as

he can make you laugh. In the 33 years that Jim

Carrey has worked inHollywood, he has had

over 47 movies to hiscredit. Today, as he

turns 49, wetake a look at

some of hisbest works

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Carrey played the role of Joel Barish who is ameek, responsible guy, often shocked and frus-

trated with his girlfriend’s behaviour . Quite unlikeCarrey, right? Even in his more serious films like TheTruman Show, there is a bit of Ace Ventura seepingthrough but his antics in the film were quite mild incomparison to his other films. This was one film thatestablished him as a versatile actor.

The Truman Show

This film was clearly Jim Carrey's first bid tobreak away from the comic tag and be

considered as a serious actor. As much credit goesto the script which was nothing short of splendid,Carrey's performance was both understated andeffective. Towards the end, it is he who providesmost of the emotional pay-off.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In this film he played the role of Count Olaf, an out-rageously diabolical actor and master of disguise

who is determined to swindle the Baudelaireorphans out of their fortune. A megalomaniac whowe intended to hate but liked him nonetheless. It’simpossible to visualize any other actor pulling offwhat Carrey managed to do in the film.

Ace Ventura

This was Jim Carrey's first leading movie whichwent on to prove that he is man's best friend for

laughs. It was a non-stop romp of comedy pratfalls,one-liners and of course Carrey's priceless facialexpressions. For two hours you will forget about theworld and its problems, while you laugh uncontrol-lably at Ace Ventura and his antics.

The Mask

Released in 1994, the film was directed by ChuckRussell and it instantly catapulted Jim Carrey’s

popularity among youth and children to greaterheights. Jim Carrey stars as Stanely Ipkiss, a clerk ina bank who acquires superpowers when he wears amask. His antics and dazzling special effects were ahuge hit with the audience. Mixing quirkiness withastounding body language, Jim Carrey’s perfor-mance in the film was epic to say the least. Thepopularity of the film spawned a sequel with a dif-ferent star cast; however it was a miserable failureat box-office.

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

I’vedone 90 or 85 rallies throughoutmy life, and this one was the onewhere I had to fight the hardest.Today will leave its mark on me.”

them,” said Peterhansel.“It’s been a long time, I’ve

been waiting for five years to winagain! To take the victory in SouthAmerica is a huge relief, it ranksamong my best triumphs.

“Moreover, the race was veryclose during the first week andthere was always a lot of pressure.”

“This race is stressful, excitingand fascinating, and it’s also veryrewarding at the end. Now I’mgoing to party with the entire teamand then we’ll see.”

“I was starting to doubt myself,to think I was growing too old forthis, that I’d lost it or that I wasn’tmade for South America... and inthe end everything turned outfine!

“But I still have a blue ban-dana from my motorcycling peri-od. I didn’t tell anyone, but I kept itin my pocket throughout theentire rally. It’s the story of thecomeback of the blue bandana.”

“I’ve done 90 or 85 ralliesthroughout my life, and this onewas the one where I had to fightthe hardest. Today will leave itsmark on me.”

MELBOURNE: Grand slam champion Li Na hasboosted Chinese tourism to Australia and couldhelp double the number of visitors in the next fiveyears, a report said on Tuesday.

The “Li factor” was behind a 30 percent rise inAustralian Open ticket sales in China after theWuhan native reached last year’s final and went onto win the French Open, the Herald Sun said.

“About 53 million Chinese left their country on aholiday last year,” Tourism and Transport Forum

boss John Lee told the newspaper.“Of those, 500,000 came to Australia. That

number could double in five years, helped by theLi factor.”

The 29-year-old Li became Asia’s first grandslam finalist in Melbourne last year, when she lost toBelgian Kim Clijsters, and won over many fans withher jokes and charisma.

Li’s French Open win catapulted her to super-stardom in China, where her popularity is ratedalongside that of basketball’s Yao Ming. Lee said hehoped she would win in Melbourne “for the freepublicity it would give Australia”.

“The Chinese fans are not only visitingMelbourne and its surrounds,” he said. “They willvisit Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru.

“She’s made a successful start to 2012, and if thatcontinues Li could be more valuable to Australiantourism than Oprah.”

Australia, whose tourism industry has hit trou-ble after a boom in the 1990s, arranged for US chatshow queen Oprah Winfrey to visit last year to high-light the country’s attractions on her widelywatched programme.

once ranked as high as 26 in theworld.

The Russian fourth seedalso showed no signs of a left ankle

injury that forced her to withdrawfrom the Brisbane International two

weeks ago.

Sharapova claimed the first set injust 25 minutes and didn’t lose agame until 2-0 in the second set,

when her serve temporarily desertedher. But she quickly recovered to

break straight back and run awaywith the match.

Dulko had no answer to thepower of Sharapova’s ground

strokes, her forehand particularlydamaging throughout the 58-minute encounter. Sharapova

smashed 14 winners past Dulko andforced the Argentine into 22 errors

over the two sets.“I knew I had a tough opponent

today,” a delighted Sharapova saidafterwards. “I focused on every point

and took her time away — she’s aplayer who loves time on the ball.”
