In a shocking incident, ayoung girl, Majida Begum, was found dead under sus-picious circumstances in Old

City last week. While her parentssuspect that the girl’s boyfriendIsmail Khan may be responsiblefor her demise, the police are yetto put a finger on the cause of hersudden death. In the meantime, her family struggles to find clo-sure as their questions are leftunanswered.

According to Kanchanbaghpolice inspector Shyam SunderSingh, the 20-year-old victim’scharred body was found in some

bushes last week at the DRDLquarters under Kanchanbaghpolice station limits. He addedthat Majida had been in lovewith Ismail for the last six

months, but her sudden deathraised several questions. “We arewaiting for post-mortem reportsfor further insight into the case,”he added.

Incidentally, Majida was aresident of Indra NagarPhisalbanda in Old City andbelongs to a poor family. Sheused to work as a tailor to earn a

living, while her father MohdAhmed is a tempo driver. Sixmonths ago Majida fell in lovewith Ismail, who worked as anelectrician and lived in the samearea. The couple had planned toget married, but for some reasonthis did not materialise.

In the meantime, Majida’sparents arranged her marriagewith another man, who wasworking in the UAE. It was dueto this that Ismail began to har-bour a grudge against Majidaand in a fit of rage set her ablaze,Mohd Ahmed alleged in hiscomplaint.

According to inspector Singh, the police have questionedIsmail and also checked Majida’s

call history, which revealed thatthe victim had spoken to Ismailjust 10 minutes before her death. The police also found two cellphones near the victim’s body. Both phones are registered onIsmail’s name and had beengiven to Majida as a gift.

“We suspect that this couldbe a case of suicide as the girlwas upset at her parents’ deci-sion to marry her off against herwishes to a man of their choice,”said the inspector.

However, the victim’s par-ents allege that it is a clear case ofmurder. The police have bookeda case under section 306 for abet-ment of suicide and investiga-tions are on.

Girl death: Parents suspect beauThe girl, who was to marry a man of her parents’ choosing, was found dead with burn

injuries, leading police to believe that it could be a case of suicide.

1 Want to register as a hawk-er? Go to an e-Seva centre.

Or so is the attitude of the GHMCofficials when it comes to imple-menting the FSA. But for the uned-ucated vendor, red tapism is adeterrent.

2 Anti-graft crusade won’t bea piece of cake.

So learnt former minister ShankerRao when his house was recentlyraided by the police in his absenceand his wife allegedly threatenedin connection to a land deal issue.

3 EC learns lesson, startsenrolment early.

Unlike previous elections years, the poll panel has begun its driverto enrol voters well in advance thistime round.

4 CoP takes on a local flavourto protect biodiversity.

The onus is on the local govern-ment and local bodies to protectbiodiversity as more and morepeople move to cities.

Rail Roko by T cadresLast year we had reported how the

Telangana Joint Action Committeehad declared a three day Rail Roko topress for a separate state. While therewere sporadic incidents of violenceand rail traffic and passengers were hithard, the Telangana leaders them-selves seemed to be missing fromaction. It was the cadres that were outfighting for a separate state.

With only a fewhawkers register-ing themselvesunder the GHMC

limits, the implementation ofFood Safety Act (FSA) is a dis-tant dream. Lack of awarenessamongst the uneducated businessmen is cited as the main reason for this failure. However, officials are reluctantto educate them.

Despite the extension ofdeadlines for registration ofhawkers, the response has beenpoor. Only two per cent of theregistration was completedunder the GHMC limits.According to the officials, theresponsibility for registrationlies with hawkers. “We feel thatthe hawkers must do so volun-tarily,” says a health official.

The much publicised FSAproposed by the Central gov-ernment seems to be a farce, particularly in a city likeHyderabad. Moreover, onlythree officials have beenengaged for the completion ofthe registration process andthese officials are already deal-ing with various other responsi-bilities. According to a seniorGHMC officials, one assistantmedical officer health (AMOH)and two food inspectors arehandling the entire registrationprocess. “They can registerthemselves at the nearest e-Sevacentre” is the casual response ofthe GHMC officials when askedabout the lack of manpower tocomplete the process.

But for hawkers trying toregister themselves voluntarily, the riddle of red tape proves tobe a deterrent. The fear of losingbusiness in the process of regis-tration and the fact that the pro-cess is beyond their level of

comprehension is discouraginghawkers from adopting the newscheme. As Ramachandraiah, snack vendor in Banjara Hillsput it, “I know that we have toregister ourselves one day, butyou know the kind of paperwork at government offices.”

With the laxity shown byofficials, many hawkers fearthat their income will suffer. They suspect that once theregistration process is complet-ed, the hawker will have todole out a cut for the foodinspectors and lower cadre offi-cers. “The laxity is directly relat-ed to the practice of income gen-eration from hawkers. Baldiyakhatapita chaldiya (municipal folkare notorious for takingbribes),” says Harinath, a retiredteacher.

Bribe fear keepshawkers off records

Only threeofficials havebeenassigned toregister allthe hawkersthat fallunder thepurview ofthe GHMC,clearly aninadequatenumber.

The raid conducted bythe Cyberabad policeat the residence of for-mer minister andS e c u n d e r a b a d

Cantonment MLA Dr P ShankerRao in the City on Saturday lefthis family members shocked. The police conducted the raid inconnection with a case registeredagainst Rao in a land dealingissue.

The fact that the police raidedtheir house without a search war-rant pained Rao’s family. Raoshot to fame with his numerousacts to expose corruption in theState. His activities earned himthe title of Andhra Anna Hazareand anti-graft crusader.

In an exclusive interviewwith Postnoon, Shanker Rao’sdaughter P Sushmitha said thatshe and her mother were trau-matised by the raid. She claimedthat her father did not commitany crime and slammed a sectionof the media for distorting factsand publishing incorrect reports.Sushmitha said that she waspained at the way the policebehaved with her mother, whowas alone at home when the raidtook place. She also termed theraid an insult to the family of aneminent person who had been

elected as MLA for six terms.

What did the police do at yourhome? A group of 15 police personnelcame to my house on Saturday. They told my mother, who wasalone at home, that they came formy father. When she told themthat he was not available, thepolice began to search the house. My mother did not object to that. But my mother raised objectionswhen they searched the drawersand she asked the police to pro-

duce a search warrant. The police, instead of showing the searchwarrant, threatened my mother, who is a diabetic and an intestinalhaemorrhage patient. This is con-demnable. It has hurt me a lot.How can somebody behave insuch a cruel manner despiteknowing that the person they arelooking for was not present athome?

Do you see any conspiracybehind it? Yes, I look at it as a conspiracy by

determined people with ulteriormotives. These people are scaredof my father because he vowedto continue his fight against cor-ruption and promised to exposethe corruption of important lead-ers in the State. This is clear evi-dence that the leaders who areagainst my father are doing thisas part of their vendetta politics.

Who do you think is responsi-ble for this? I do not want to take the names ofthose who are responsible forthis. All the people of the Stateknow who is responsible for thisvendetta politics. You can askanybody or for that matter, youcan conduct an SMS survey. Thepeople of the State will SMS youthe names of those people whoare harassing my family.

Are you scared by these devel-opments? Why should we get scared bythese developments? I want to

ask the people who are responsi-ble, ‘Is all this being done tointimidate us not to open ourmouth or to make us stop fight-ing against corruption?’ Then letme tell these people that we willcontinue our fight against cor-ruption as the servants of thepeople. The people of the Statewill stand by us in our fightagainst corruption.

Will you throw some light onthe case against your father? The case is actually related to myuncle, Dayanand. My father wasfalsely implicated in it. A sectionof the media also published dis-torted reports about the case. TheHigh Court dismissed the move toquash the petition filed by myuncle as the advocate representinghim did not appear in court whenthe matter was called for hearingon September 27 last month.

Are you worried about yourfather’s safety now? Yes, I am absolutely worriedabout his safety followingSaturday’s incident. I am indig-nant and enraged at the misbe-haviour of the police. The Stategovernment also withdrew hissecurity on flimsy grounds. Thishas caused me a lot of worryabout his security. If anythinghappens to him, the State gov-ernment will be responsible.

The recent comments ofUnion health minister andAICC AP in-charge

Ghulam Nabi Azad that it is noteasy to separate the state hasstirred up a hornet’s nest in theTelangana region.

While senior Congress leaderand former CWC member KKeshava Rao publicly con-demned Azad for his statement, the Telangana Joint ActionCommittee (TJAC) termed it asbaseless and far from the truth.Aghast at the comments, theTelangana leaders are planningto up their ante against theUnion government.

Reacting to the AICC leader’sstatement, Keshava Rao said that

Azad’s comments were like aslap in the face of TelanganaCongress leaders, who had beentelling the people that Congressalone would create a separateTelangana state. “His [Azad’s]statement is completely irrespon-sible. How can he make such astatement? Does he think entireTelangana people are fools? Hemight have spoken like that as hedid not know the pain of theTelangana people who have lost700 family members, who sacri-ficed their lives for achieving aseparate state,” he said. He ques-tioned the party high command, asking whether Azad’s statementwas an indication of its unwill-ingness to create a separateTelangana state. Commenting onthe Azad statement, TJAC chair-man Prof. Kodandaram alleged

that Azad was speaking in thetone of United Andhra leaders.“We take strong exception to hiscomments. How can he spreadsuch huge lies despite being wit-

ness to all the Telangana strug-gles? We will not tolerate suchstatements,” the TJAC chairmanwarned. He also said that theTJAC was planning to hold

much bigger agitations than therecent Telangana march held onSeptember 30.

BJP GETS POLITICALMILEAGETaking a cue from Azad’s state-ment, the BJP is trying to cash in.The party is planning to take theanti-Telangana statements ofCongress leaders to the public andget political mileage by highlight-ing the failure of the UPA govern-ment in creating a separateTelangana state. “We will take thisissue to the public and tell thepeople that BJP alone is capable ofcreating a separate Telanganastate. If we come to power afterthe next general elections, we willcreate a Telangana state immedi-ately,” BJP senior leaderSugunakar Rao told Postnoon.

Azad’s T statement sparks furyTelangana leaders are up in arms over the Union minister’s views on a separate state.

‘Raid part of vendetta politics’In an exclusive interview to Postnoon, Dr P Shanker Rao’s daughter Sushmitha talks about

Saturday’s raid, the callousness of the police and her worries about her father’s safety.

The Election Comm -ission’s (EC’s) specialdrive to enrol votersand provide voter

identity cards began onOctober 7 and will continue tillthe end of the month.

This drive is being held toease the pressure of voterenrolment which will followdue to the upcoming 2014 gen-eral elections. The “SundaySpecial” aimed at creating astress-free enrolment process, but citizens seemed indifferentto the initiative.

According to special com-missioner Naveen Mittal, thereare 3,400 polling booths in theCity. Booth-level officers manthe polling booths for bothmen and women. In certainparts of Old City, there are sep-arate booths for men andwomen. “On an average, weexpect about 1,200 voter IDregistrations, which translatesroughly into 300 to 400 house-holds per booth,” Mittal said.

On the first Sunday, theturnout was lacklustre.Postnoon’s survey of a coupleof booths in the City showedthat citizens seemed unwilling

to cooperate with the drive. AtErramanzil, the booth officerwas found to have left beforeclosing time, not because itwas a Sunday but becausethere was no registration workto be done, said the clerks atthe Civil Supplies Bhavan.Khairatabad’s municipal cor-poration office too bore adeserted look in the afternoon.

However, EC officials areconfident of polling booths fill-ing up as the drive continues.“Political parties are alsoinvolved in this drive as theyhave been spreading aware-ness about this drive to thepeople. This is being donemainly to ease the pressure inthe run-up to the 2014 elec-tions,” said an official.

Despite the enthusiasm ofthe officials, what remains tobe seen is if the public willrespond to the drive.

Almost five days after the expo-sure of a multi-crore scholar-ship scam in the StateMinorities Finance

Corporation, the minister of the con-cerned minority welfare departmentSyed Ahamadullah seems to be unaffect-ed by the developments that rocked theminority community.

The minister, neither held a high-level review meeting with officials con-cerned on the steps to be taken in theaftermath of the scam in which about`55 crore were siphoned off by a gang offour, nor did he give any assurance tothe minority students that they wouldnot be starved off their share of scholar-ships. Instead, the minister reportedlykept himself busy lobbying for posts forhis supporters and followers.

Highly-placed party sourcesinformed Postnoon that the minister metan All India Congress Committee leaderthree days ago and requested him togive due preference to his supportersand followers during the filling of nomi-nation posts. It may be emphasised herethat the scam was unearthed by CID onWednesday (October 11).

The minister, however, had reacted

on the issue on Saturday. But, theanswers given by him left many mediapersons shocked.

When the minister was asked as towhy the corporation opened accounts incooperative and small banks instead ofnationalised banks, he callouslyanswered that he was not an accountantto answer these question and added thatas a minister it was not his discretion tofind out the reasons.

However, the minister assured thatthe State would take stringent actionagainst the culprits responsible for thescam.

Reacting to the statement of the min-

ister, his own party MLA and chairmanof committee on minority affairs ShaikMastan Wali faulted the minister’s state-ment and said that the minister shouldhave assured the community instead ofsaying that he was not aware of the facts.

“I think the minister should not havemade such a statement. He should havesaid that the State government wouldtake all steps to protect each and everypenny,” he said.

ISSUE RAISED LONG AGOInterestingly, the issue of money belong-ing to Minority students being divertedto fixed deposits was raised by Wali lastyear. But the State government stayedmum on the issue instead of takingaction.

“Yes, I raised the issue of minoritystudents’ scholarships and the way it isbeing put into fixed deposits. When Iapproached finance minister AnamRamnarayana Reddy with the issue, heassured me that he would look into it.But nothing of that sort has happened tillnow,” Wali told Postnoon on Saturday. He also revealed to Postnoon that hewould write a letter to Minority welfaredepartment secretary in his personalcapacity to inquire into the last 10 years’transactions of the corporation.

Time was when emergencycivic services had amethod and identity of

their own and people respectedthem. No longer. In the increas-ing mess of man and machine onroad and chaotic traffic, theseservices receive little attention.

In Hyderabad, all emergencysignals have acquired the sametune, thanks to the universalinstallation of an electronicalarm. It has obviated thethoughtful difference our peershad developed for urgent civicservices.

A quick-paced siren ofurgency for ambulance, a rhyth-mic continuous clanging for fireengine, a less urgent warning ina staccato fashion for a policechief or a VIP. These were devel-oped to help road-users realiseby sound and allot a priority tothem. A fire tender gets theutmost priority; all traffic isstopped to let it pass. The nextpriority goes to ambulancesbecause someone’s life is atstake. And, the third priority

goes to the police chief or VIP.“Nothing,” says Saleem Khan, afire officer, “the unruly trafficcares for nobody whateveralarm is put on.” But regardlessof the road situation why is eachof these civic emergency servicesdevoid of distinction? “It is theambulance service that shouldchange its siren.”

In many world cities, each ofthese services has a distinct sirenand they have a separate track. Itis futile to talk of an exclusivetrack, agree officers manningtraffic. The problem is more forthe pedestrians and physicallyhandicapped.

“While drivers can see theoncoming vehicle in their rear-view mirror a pedestrian has toturn and struggle to spot whichvehicle is clamouring for space,”said a senior citizen, RavindraPai who says he was oncecaught in the middle of the roadconfronting an ambulance furi-ously ploughing through thetraffic.

Ambulance drivers mean-while curse the rest of the men atwheel. “The private vehicleowners are boorish,” sputtered adriver. There were occasionswhen car drivers demanded theemergency service vehicleswitch off the ‘damned’ noiseand sometimes get into an argu-ment over it.

“Suppose their own peopleare trapped and we are going tosave them, will they behave likethis?” he wanted to know.

Min unaffected by scamDespite exposure of the multi-crore scam involving money that was allotted to

minority students, the concerned minister has still not responded.

Just ahead of the high levelsegment at CoP-11, theCities for Life summit openstoday. CM Kiran Kumar

Reddy along with the mayor,Majid Hussain unveiled theHyderabad Biodiversity Index, the first of its kind in India.

Cities for Life is being hostedby the government of India, gov-ernment of Andhra Pradesh andthe GHMC and is being organ-ised by ICLEI — LocalGovernments for Sustainability(ICLEI) and CBD. Fourty sevencountries from all over the worldare represented here.

By the end of the next twodecades, it’s estimated that over60 per cent of the world’s popu-lation will live in Cities.Environmentalists say that thisexponential increase in urbanisa-tion, and the corresponding risein consumption and pollutionpatterns, will single-handedlypose one of the biggest threats tobiodiversity in modern times. Insuch a scenario, the role of may-

ors and local administrators hasbecome vital, if any strategic tar-get to conserve biodiversity is tobe realised.

Taking this into considera-tion, the CBD has mobilised over250 sub-national governments atmunicipal, regional and state-

levels, to come together at thetwo-day summit, starting today.

The Hyderabad summit willtake forward the agenda initiat-ed at CoP-10, where partiesadopted an action plan for sub-national governments, cities andother local authorities.

At the Conference of Mayors, governors and local authoritiesfrom different parts of the worldwill discuss coordinationbetween levels of government, draft a PoA of the CoP-10 deci-sion and innovations at the locallevel (by mayors of Nagoya,

Bonn, Montpellier, Montreal,Curitiba and Mexico). Also beinglaunched is the Cities andBiodiversity Outlook report bythe CBD.

Parties stress on ‘going glocal’The Cities for Life starts at CoP-11 today as it takes a step back from its global

agenda and puts the spotlight on the role of local players in conserving biodiversity.

Can the impact of globalwarming be lessened bydeploying sun-shields in

space and by injecting sulphatesin the upper atmosphere toreduce the amount of solar ener-gy reaching the earth?

Environmental scientists andother experts are currently grap-pling with the proposed geoengi-neering technologies and arestudying the impact they couldhave on biodiversity.

Geoengineering is the delib-erate intervention in the earth'sclimate system to moderate glob-al warming.

The experts believe SunlightReflection Methods (SRMs) andCarbon Dioxide Removal (CDR)techniques could reduce themagnitude of climate change butare likely to have unintendedimpacts on biodiversity with sig-nificant risks and uncertainties.

The experts' report on geo-engineering in relation to biodi-versity is being discussed at theongoing 11th meeting ofConference of Parties to the CBD.

Over 170 countries areattending the meet, discussingvarious issues related to biodi-versity.

The experts believe reducingemissions is the best strategy toavoid climate change.

“But that is not happening. With global temperature increas-es of more than four degrees pro-jected, we need to study viabilityof other actions,” PhilWilliamson of the University ofEast Anglia, who headed thegroup said. The group, whichwas constituted by the CBD in2010 and submitted its report toCoP-11, called for continuedresearch on geoengineering andits governance. IANS

Speaking at the CoP-11, CMKiran Kumar Reddy said, “It is

clear that in order to achievenational, regional and global targets of biodiversity conserva-tion, both the sub-national andlocal level governments have tobe supported to take proactiveactions. This involves allocationof resources to build technicalcapacities to implement resultoriented projects and pro-grammes. It is my hope that theoutcomes of the summit thatwill feed into the high level seg-ment will encourage parties totake the next step and mobiliseresources for subnational andregional governments.”

The mayor said, “cities forLife provides a unique opportu-nity to share experiences andtools, consult experts andstrengthen multi level coopera-tion to implement the CBD.”

The Indian poultry indus-try is showing positivesigns with the 7-8 percent growth in egg pro-

duction. Around 20 crore eggsproduced and consumed perday with around 24 crores birds.

The State produces around 7crore eggs with 9 crore birds,one-third of the total egg pro-duction in the country. Broilerindustry is showing 15-20 percent growth with 250-300 crorebirds produced every year withan average of 2 kg each.

“The industry also want toconcentate on exports for itsgrowth. The country exports 40-45 lakh eggs per day to coun-tries in West Asia and con-tributes to the foreign exchange. There is also continuous growthin per capita consumption andpresently standing at 57 eggs inthe country and 80 eggs in thestate,” says D Sudhakar, presi-dent, Andhra Pradesh PoultryFederation.

Talking about current chal-lenges for the industry, he said,“We are facing tough time withthe drastic increase in inputcosts. Almost 80 per cent of thefeed for poultry is derived fromSoya and Maize. “With theseproduct prices touching skyhigh, because of heavy exportsof Soya to Iran and SoutheastAsian countries and exports ofMaize to Southeast Asian coun-tries.

“These pushed the marketprice of maize by more than 50per cent touching `17,000 pertonne, from `11,000 per tonnesix months ago. While, Soyatouched the `50,000 per tonnefrom `18,000 per tonne six

months ago. The increase inthese feed prices passed burdenon the farmer with the produc-tion cost going to `3.25 per eggfrom `2.50 six months ago andthe cost of broiler increasedfrom `48 to `68 per kilogramduring this time.

“Despite increase in feedprices, the support from theState government has encour-aged the industry. As poultry isagriculture-allied activity, driv-ing the sales of various agricul-ture produce and a very impor-tant food commodity, the gov-ernment is going to enable the

farmers with the existing agri-culture land to set up a poultryfarm by removing impedimentof converting in to non-agricul-tural land. It is also trying tonullify agricultural market cesson poultry products,”

“We are also confident thefeed prices will come downsoon with increase in theacreage of soya production from6-7 lakh hectares to 11 lakhhectares. Soybean productionthis kharif season is expected tobe touch 14-15 million tonnesagainst 11 million tonnes lastseason. The prices have alreadyshowing positive signs with thisimpact. With the continued sup-port from the state governmentalong with decrease in feedprices will definitely enable ofthe growth of industry,” headded.

For centuries, Indianhousewives have usedhomemade remediesbased on cow’s milk to

cure constipation — but in 2009Swiss giant Nestle applied for apatent to protect a similar prod-uct of its own.

Earlier this year, India suc-cessfully fought off Nestle’sattempt at the European PatentOffice to secure a patent, sayingthat using cow’s milk as a laxa-tive was mentioned in ancienttexts and was therefore not new.

Indian government officialsare fighting hundreds of othercases to try to protect the coun-try’s “genetic heritage”, a topichigh on the agenda at the UN’sConvention on BiologicalDiversity in Hyderabad.

“India is one of the mega cen-tres for biodiversity in theworld,” said Vinod Bhatt, direc-tor of research at Navdanya, anon-profit body that seeks topromote indigenous knowledge.

“We cannot allow theft of ourtraditional knowledge that datesback thousands of years and isrooted in our culture. We have toprotect ourselves from commer-cial exploitation by the Westernworld,” Bhatt told AFP.

Traditional knowledge, usedfor centuries by indigenous com-munities under local laws andcustoms, plays an important rolein areas such as food security,

biodiversity, agriculture andmedicine.

“Nestle is just one case. Wehave already succeeded in 110,and 800 more are in thepipeline,” said Vinod KumarGupta, the head of India’sTraditional Knowledge DigitalLibrary (TKDL).

The library is a digitaldatabase established in 2001 torecord 250,000 traditional formu-lations, including the Hindu“ayurvedic” system of medicinethat has become hugely popularin the West.

“Every known medicinalplant in India is under piracy

attack,” said Gupta, citing anexample where a US patentapplication was made by Britain-based firm Provexis on the use ofbanana extracts as treatment fordiarrhoea. Evidence from theTKDL proved the banana prepa-ration was previously well-known, and the application waswithdrawn.

In the cow’s milk case, theEuropean patent authorities alsosought advice from the database, which confirmed it was a remedy— often mixed with other ingre-dients — to treat constipation forhundreds of years.

A patent application is nor-

mally rejected if there is “priorexisting knowledge” about theproduct, but that is far easier toprove if the information is pub-lished in a journal or on adatabase, rather than only heldin folklore.

Some 200 researchers tookeight years to create the TKDLdatabase, combing throughHindi, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persianand Urdu texts on ayurveda, yoga and other less-knownhealth systems such as unani andsiddha.

The TKDL is accessible to for-eign patent offices, which canconsult it before deciding

whether to grant exclusive rightsto applicants.

India woke up to the threat ofwhat is now termed “bio-piracy”20 years ago after a Europeanpatent was granted to a USgroup on an anti-fungal productderived from the native Indian“neem” tree.

Outraged campaigners andGreen Party politicians in Europechallenged its validity, and Indiafinally won a 10-year legal battlein 2000 to have the patentrevoked as neem seeds had beenused for centuries as a medicine, insecticide and contraceptive.

In 2009, the EPO also with-drew another patent granted to aSpanish company for the use ofmelon extract to treat the skindisease vitiligo on the same legalgrounds.

The practical effect of patentsmay in reality have little impactin villages of India, where plants, trees and other natural productsare still widely used to treat mal-adies. But the patents provoke anangry response from the govern-ment, which sees protectingknowledge of traditional Indianmedicine from foreign commer-cial exploitation as a matter ofnational pride.

Legal battles between theTKDL and global firms overpatent requests can take years toresolve and require exhaustivedocumentation by the agency’sresearchers to prove prior art ref-erences.

Athriving market in eastand southeast Asia in ille-gal wildlife products, par-

ticularly among cultures thatprize the rhino horn for its magi-cal or medicinal qualities, aredriving the rhinoceroses toextinction, say experts.

China, Vietnam and Thailandare major consumers of rhinohorn, fuelling the mass killing ofrhinos across their ranges inIndia and elsewhere, they said.

Assam’s Kaziranga NationalPark, the world’s last majorrefuge of one-horned rhino, saw

two massive floods this year. Theflooding of the Brahmaputrariver wreaked havoc in the parkfirst during July-August andagain in September. Over 600animals died in the first wave, and about 130 more perished inthe second. But not all weredrowned. Some rhinos fleeingthe flood fell victims to poachers.

“As the reward for rhinohorn shot up, many ex-militantshave joined the ranks,” a seniorofficial of the Wildlife CrimeControl Bureau, requestinganonymity, said. “Use of auto-matic weapons is of particularconcern, as it shows increasingsophistication,” he said.

Kaziranga, despite being oneof the best-protected reserves inthe country, faces a daunting task“because poachers are even

ready to face the bullet”, TitoJoseph of Wildlife ProtectionSociety of India said.

The Kaziranga park is hometo elephants, tigers, slow lorisand swamp deer, among others. This year, 15 rhinoceroses werekilled in the Kaziranga land-scape, said Joseph. “Poachers cutthe tail and ear of the rhino toprove to the buyers that the hornis genuine,” he said.

“China and Vietnam don’thave rhinoceroses, hence theysource the rhino horn from India.Traditionally, these marketsdepended on Africa but a newsource was always welcome,”the official said.

South Africa, another majorrhino range country, which earnshuge revenues from wildlifetourism, has lost over 400 rhinosto poaching since January.

The one-horned rhino istoday found only in India andNepal. It was exterminated fromBangladesh. India, with some2,500 rhinoceroses, is their mainhome. Nepal has about 370.

It is estimated that the tradein wildlife body parts is onlythird to arms and narcotics, agrim reminder of the threats rhi-nos face. IANS

TOUGH ACTION

EU action on Iran, SyriaThe bloc also plans on taking a ‘big step’ in Africa by agreeing to assist

Mali reconquer its north from rebels and Islamist extremists.LUXEMBOURG: Europe’s for-eign ministers will sharplyramp up the pressure on Iranand Syria at talks Monday, while taking a “big step” inAfrica by agreeing to assist Malireconquer its north from rebelsand Islamist extremists.

Meeting days before aEuropean Union summit, thebloc’s 27 foreign ministers aretipped to agree what a diplo-matic source dubbed “one of thetoughest packages of sanctions”yet against Tehran over its dis-puted nuclear programme.

“Iran has not moved on anyof the important questions overthe past few months. Therefore,we must increase the sanctionspressure,” German ForeignMinister Guido Westerwellesaid on Sunday.

“We want the EU tomorrowto send a clear signal to Tehran,”he added. “It is time for a politi-cal solution.”

Diplomatic sources said EUmember states will sanctiondealings with banks, trade andgas imports, and agree for thefirst time to hit Iran’s telecomssector.

All dealings betweenEuropean and Iranian bankswill be banned above a certain“relatively low” threshold, although exceptions will beallowed in some medical andhumanitarian cases, a diplomatsaid.

Imports of Iranian gas, though small, will be prohibit-

ed, and an extra 30 companiesput on a list of firms hit by anEU assets freeze.

As violence intensifies inSyria, the ministers are to slapan assets freeze and travel banon 28 Syrians and two firms, the20th set of sanctions againstPresident Bashar al-Assad’sregime since the start of the con-flict in March last year.

The measures target peoplelinked to violence againstprotestors, and firms accused ofsupplying equipment used forrepression by the regime. AFP

The man born to fly ‘lands safely’ after jumping

off the edge of space “Fearless Felix” Baumgartner, the

Austrian daredevil who stunnedfans around the world Sunday bybreaking the sound barrier in a hair-raising dive from the fringe of space, was “born to fly.”

That’s according to a tattoo the 43-year-old sports, a motto that took on awhole new meaning after his nail-bit-ing feat, the fastest freefall ever byleaping from a capsule more than 24miles (39 kilometers) above the Earthand reaching a top speed of 833.9miles (1,342 kilometers) per hour.

The dramatic jump — which couldhave ended in disaster by causing hisblood to boil — propelled the extremeadventure-seeker into the recordbooks. It also made a childhood dreamcome true. “I always had the desire tobe in the air,” Austria’s Kurier newspa-per quoted Baumgartner as saying. “Iclimbed trees, I wanted to see theworld from above.”

He certainly did that Sunday —and then some.

Baumgartner, who was born inSalzburg, Austria, on April 20, 1969,has come a long way from his youngeryears working as a car mechanic andrepairing motorcycles as he searchedfor ways to soar from the sky.

Toughest measuresyet await Tehran, saida diplomatic source.

14HIGH-FLYING THOUGHTSBarack Obama leaves no stone unturned and has vowed to make amendsin his approach to debates with Mitt Romney, who seemed to have theupper hand in the first presidential debate. Tomorrow we shall see ifObama hits back or Mitt will retain adavantage in round two.

Over a cracklingphone line betweenDelhi andPakistan’s northernSindh province,

Parveen Memon laughs as shetalks in Urdu about how shepersuaded her parents to notonly let her continue schoolafter grade five, but to alsochoose her school.

Memon can now afford thelevity. But it was a struggle forthe young girl from Sobhodero,a small town in the province’sKhairpur district.

“I cried so much for three tofour months that when my par-ents saw my behavior and sawhow depressed I was, they real-ized, 'This girl is not going to lis-ten to us,’ and finally allowedme to go to the Sojro ModelSchool,” she recalls. There wasno school providing girls sec-ondary education in her village.

Today Memon, 18, works asan education promoter in a localNGO that works withDevelopments in Literacy (DIL),an NGO created in 1997 by fiveexpatriate Pakistani women liv-ing in the U.S. to improve thedismal state of education inPakistan’s underdevelopedareas.“This group is part of ageneration that grew up inPakistan, one step before (presi-dent) Zia’s time” said AnjanaRaza, Islamabad-based execu-tive director of operations atDIL. “Their ties are strong and

they know the context [they areworking in].”

DIL provides quality educa-tion to disadvantaged children, especially girls, by starting newschools with a strong focus ongender equality and communityparticipation.

It currently has 150 schools,50 of which are managed onlyby DIL and 100 managed withlocal partner NGOs. DIL andDIL-partner schools are fromkindergarten to grade eight. Theschools, which currently enrollsome 3,600 students, followgovernment regulations.

DIL starts working in anarea only if the communitythere wants better educationand invites it in. “Either there isno girls’ school or no school, orthe schools are very far and thegirls aren’t allowed to go so far.So we go where there is need, and there has to be a groupthere that wants this,” she said, adding that in most of the areasin which they work there are noschools at all.

Even when invited by thecommunity, it is far from easy toconvince the local people tosend their daughters to anyschool at all. “Sometime parentstake girls out of school in thethird or fourth grade,” she said. Many are married off as youngas 10 and 11 years of age, eventhough that practice is illegal inPakistan. “Puberty [for girlshere] reaches early,” said Raza.

DIL and its local partner’svolunteers have persuadedsome parents to not marry offtheir daughters so early, espe-cially in interior Sindh, thoughit doesn't always work as

planned.“Last year the parents of a

sixth grade girl wanted to gether married and the teachersintervened but it didn’t help. She still got married. Then wewent to the husband’s familyand tried to persuade them tolet the girl continue her educa-tion. The husband then got thegirl [the child bride] books andsent her to school,” Raza said.

The challenge in Pakistan isnot just persuasion but alsounderstanding the myriad cul-tural contexts. “We literallyhave to be responsive to theneeds and requirements and thedevelopmental process of thearea at each school and commu-nity level we are serving,” saidRaza. The schools follow thegovernment curriculum butenhance it. They also use alter-native materials instead of gov-

ernment-prescribed books. Theyuse the phonics method to teachEnglish and Urdu because itmakes the child focus on thealphabet and the sound ratherthan the rote method of govern-ment schools. “We use an incre-mental approach,” Raza said.

After reaching grade eight,DIL and its partners give stu-dents scholarships to go to thenearest government or privateschool to finish grades nine and10. “A travel allowance is mostcritical because otherwise thegirl students would have to takepublic transport which theirparents may be reluctant to havethem use,” said Raza, addingthat the students pool in theirfunds from DIL to collectivelyrent a van or share a ride. DILalso helps students buy booksand pay the registration fee fortheir examinations.

The sky is no longer the limit

There’s nothing that can compare to the desire of mankind to reach higher, to go faster,to challenge limits. On Sunday, Felix Baumgartner lived up to his name of Fearless

Felix. With his daredevilry of jumping off the edge of the space, the Austrian rewrote his-tory. Three records he scripted by his 10-minute 24-mile drop to the earth, the chief onebeing the world's first supersonic skydiver by breaking the sound barrier at Mach 1.24. It

has all the aspects of a hit Hollywood movie — aborted attempts and postponements, the contender being trained and mentored by Joe Kittinger, the previous holder of the

highest altitude manned balloon flight. What Felix personifies is the same spirit withwhich man surged forward, breaking barriers, finding means to fly, making wheels that

with the passing of time got hotter and faster, all of which were deemed impossible onceupon a time. Despite what he did, Felix stays humble, for he learned "sometimes you

have to go up really high to see how small you are".

Why we love... Russia

It comes as a huge reassurance thatRussians won’t sell arms to Pakistan, rav-

aged by everything that any nation oughtnot to be ravaged by. The only proper goalthey seem to have had, which at times theywere quite boastful and open about, wasthe disintegration of India. One need notlook much for reasons for instability in theregion. News in recent times from Pakistanshows it’s lightyears away from achievingstability. Perhaps Russians could do thesame with Syria, too?

You know that feeling of growingfrustration that creeps in every timeyou get onto the weighing scale?Despite months and months of diet-

ing you’re still tipping the scales the wrongside and can’t figure out why it’s so hard tolose the inches. It’s probably time you re-looked your diet based on your body’sneeds and not based on the miracle an XYZdiet claims it can perform. In his new bookSix Secrets of Successful Weight Loss, Dr JohnMansfield, says food sensitivity is ‘by far thecommonest single cause of weight gain’rather than too many calories or lack ofexercise, the Daily Mail reported. Accordingto the Dr Mansfield, one of the best ways tolose weight is to find out what foods you aresensitive to and work your diet around that.

“Food sensitivity really depends on anindividual’s body type and metabolism rate. Some people may digest some foods betterthan others. For instance, some people cantake a high fat diet more easily than others. However, claims that food sensitivity islinked to weight loss remains to be scientifi-cally proven,” says nutritionist SuneethaSapur, director Akkshaya Foundation.

“Any type of sensitivity causes inflam-mation in the body, but it is not proven if itplays a role in weight loss or gain. It remainsto be established on what basis we declare aperson’s sensitivity to certain foods and

how it affects that individual. However, what is proven is the fact that noteverybody responds in the samemanner to a particular diet. Eachindividual’s body constitution andmetabolism rate differs and ideal-ly the diet should be a person-alised one,” explains Suneetha.

She goes on to add, “There arethree kinds of body types — ecto-morph, endomorph and mesomorph. They are classified based on how bodiescan handle calories. So when a person islooking for weight loss through diets, thefirst thing he/she should do is identifyhis/her body type and then look for a dietplan that suits them. For instance, if a per-son is unable to process energy fast enough,his/her diet should be modelled according-ly. While there are many diet plans that arepopular and easily available on the internet, they are not as effective as a personalisedplan.”

An individual’s lifestyle and kind of jobalso are deciding factors for the kind ofdiet plan a person should draw up andstick to for effective weight loss, addsSuneetha.

This may result in a very fast, abnormal heart rhyth. When this rhythmoccurs, no blood is pumped out from theheart, and the brain quickly becomesdeprived of oxygen, causing sudden lossof consciousness and in some cases sudden death.

LONDON: Drinking a litre ofmineral water every day can pre-vent and even reverse the devas-tating memory loss disease,Alzheimer’s, British scientistshave claimed.

Researchers from KeeleUniversity said the silicon-richwater can alter the course of cog-nitive decline in patients byremoving toxic aluminium fromtheir bodies, according to theDaily Express.

It has long been known thataluminium has some link to thedevelopment of the disease, butwhether aluminium is the causehas not been established.

The researchers found thatdrinking water packed with sili-con “significantly reduced” lev-els of the neurotoxin in the bodyof patients.

The study, published in theJournal of Alzheimer’s Disease, said that the patients studieddrank a litre of mineral water aday for 13 weeks.

The study involved 15Alzheimer’s patients and theircarers or partners -— 15 womenand 15 men in total.

The brand of water used wasfrom Malaysia. But he said watersold in Britain have similar sili-con levels.

One patient saw the amountof aluminium in his body dropby 70 percent. Most patientsshowed no further signs of cog-nitive decline, and three showeda major improvement.

The results gave new hope offinding simple ways to fight thedisease, Christopher Exley, wholed the study, was quoted as say-ing by the British daily.

“There were two parts. Thefirst is that drinking silicon waterdoes remove aluminium fromthe body. When you drink sili-con-rich mineral water, alumini-um is gathered into the bloodand excreted through the urine,”Exley said. IANS

RESEARCH

‘Sleeping on the backincreases stillbirth risks’

PREGNANCY

LONDON: Pregnant womenwho sleep on their back mayincrease the risk of miscarriageor stillbirth, a five-yearAustralian study has found.

The research titled the“Sydney Stillbirth Study”looked at pregnancies of 295women from eight hospitalsaround Australia, the Daily Mailreported.

The study found thatwomen who sleep on their backare six times more likely tohave a stillborn baby.

A stillborn baby is a babyborn dead after 24 weeks ofpregnancy. If the baby diesbefore 24 completed weeks, it isknown as a late miscarriage.

Lead researcher AdrienneGordon, from Sydney’s RoyalPrince Alfred Hospital, saidprevious research suggestedprolonged periods of lying inthis position restricted bloodflow to the baby.

It is believed that sleepingon the right side or on the backreduces blood flow through amajor vein from the legs to theheart, which affects the supplyto the womb, the study said.

However, the researcherssaid it was important thatwomen who are currently preg-nant “don’t become alarmed ifthey sometimes sleep on theirback”.

Experts said three-quarters

of pregnant women sleep mostly on the left side.

The daily said this may suggest they instinctivelychoose a sleeping position thatworks best for the baby.

In almost half of stillbirths, the direct cause of the baby’sdeath cannot be established.

Ten per cent of stillborn

babies have some kind ofabnormality and other possiblecauses include problems withthe mother’s health or prob-lems with the placenta.

Stillbirth FoundationAustralia, which funded thestudy, said the research wasunique as it looked exclusivelyat women who were more than32 weeks pregnant.

In 2011, a University ofAuckland study found thatmothers who slept on theirback or right-hand side on thenight before giving birth weretwice as likely to have astillborn child compared tothose who slept on their left.

I’ve always shared a very goodrapport with my son. Now heis not as open with me. He isnow 16, and doesn’t like shar-ing things with me. In fact, attimes it feels like he finds itembarrassing to have me drophim to classes. How can I gethim to be as caring as earlier? The easy answer to this ques-tion is-’wait till your sonbecomes an adult.’ Fortunately, teens grow out of this age andgo back to being themselves as

they grow older. However, while a teenager is in his/herteen years, parents are the oneswho have to make an adjust-ment to wrap their mindaround the changed and onceamiable child. The good thingis that if a parent once shared agood rapport with a child, thenafter the difficult adolescentstage passes, the relationshipgoes back to being good again.

Teenagers undergo enor-mous development during theadolescent years including, quiet and withdrawn. Thischange is normal, since a teen istrying to ‘individuate’ orbecoming their own person.During this time, it is helpful tolet the teen have his/her ownspace and while gently remind-ing them that you are there ifthey need you. A lot of emo-

tional damage to relationshipshappens during these yearsbecause parents fail to under-stand the importance of allow-ing them to develop. Parentshave to balance authority alongwith providing autonomy toallow for development.Allowing your child to makemistakes and learn is crucial.

As a parent, allow your teenthe freedom to make choices

and decisions for themselves, and allow them to explore theirsense of identity. As long asthey know that you are thereand have their best interests atheart, they will return to shar-ing a wonderful relationship.

Skyfall getsrave reviewsfrom critics

While we won’t see007 tackling his

latest missionuntil November

the flick, saying viewers will bein for a treat.

“Dramatically grippingwhile still brandishing a droll

undercurrent of humor, thisbeautifully made film will cer-

tainly be embraced as one ofthe best Bonds by loyal fans

worldwide and leaves youwanting the next one to turn

up sooner than four years fromnow,” Hollywood Reporter’s

beginning of the positivereviews pouring in for the

highly anticipated actionmovie.

“Putting the ‘intelligence’in MI6, Skyfall reps a smart,

savvy and incredibly satisfyingaddition to the 007 oeuvre,

one that places Judi Dench’sM at the center of the action.

It’s taken 23 films and 50years to get Bond’s backsto-

ry, but the wait was worthit,” Variety’s Peter Debruge

wrote.“Bond is back and he’s

more dangerous than ever,”the Daily Mail’s BazBamigboy went on.

“Daniel Craig is simplyextraordinary,” GQ UK’sAndy Morris said. “Thismay be the most fallible,

human and downrightbelievable Bond we’ve

seen on screen.”The Guardian's film

critic Xan Brooks wasn’texactly the biggest

Skyfall fan, saying thefilm “falls prey to a com-mon failing of many 50th

birthday bashes,” but saysCraig made for a “splendidly

authoritative Bond.”Skyfall is 23rd movie in

the Bond franchise.

PREVIOUS PUZZLE ANSWER

How to play kakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku insome ways. But is also suitably different. The keyquestion: ‘How do you play kakuro?’, well hereare the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakurogrid, unlike in sudoku, can be of any size. It hasrows and columns, and dark cells like in a cross-word. And, just like in a crossword, some of thedark cells will contain numbers. Some cells willcontain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbersreference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are allyou get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells — calleda run — any of the numbers 1 to 9 may be usedbut, like sudoku, each number may only be usedonce.

Let’s have an example to explain this conceptmore clearly:

In the image above, which shows a section ofa kakuro puzzle, you will see the numbers ‘26’and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells under-neath must sum to 14. Therefore 9, 4, 1 could bethe answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combi-nation? Well, this is done through eliminationand cross-referencing. For instance, as you workout the answers for other kakuro clues, this willnaturally limit the valid combinations, and hencethe answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two — it con-tains two numbers, 30 and 11. The 30 refers tothe vertical run underneath the number 30 andthe 11 refers to the two cells to the right, hori-zontally, of the number 11.

It’s a two-horse race nowSebastian Vettel secured a third win on the trot on Sunday and in doing so leapfrogged Ferrari’s

Fernando Alonso at the top of the drivers’ standings.PETER STEBBINGS Agence France-presse

YEONGAM, SOUTH KOREA:Reigning champion SebastianVettel heads into the last fourraces of the season knowing themomentum is with him, and hisfate in his own hands, after a com-manding win in South Korea.

The Red Bull driver secured athird win on the trot on Sundayand in doing so leapfroggedFerrari’s Fernando Alonso at thetop of the drivers’ standings, inwhat looks like a two-horse racenow for the title.

The chasing McLarens ofLewis Hamilton and JensonButton endured a dreadful week-end at Yeongam. Hamilton was10th while his fellow Briton wasdumped out of the race momentsafter the start by an apologeticKamui Kobayashi.

Hamilton and Button, both

former world champions, admit-ted afterwards that their assaulton the crown was over. KimiRaikkonen of Lotus is third in thechampionship but a hefty waybehind the two at the top of thepack.

Vettel, who is going after athird title on the bounce, tops thecharts with 215 points, theSpaniard Alonso is on 209 andRaikkonen back on 167. The nextgrand prix is in India in twoweeks.

“For many months it wassomething of a real roller-coasterride, but we finally found ourstrength again and sinceSingapore it works,” said theGerman Vettel, after he and MarkWebber took a Red Bull one-twoin South Korea.

“Today the team did every-thing right, and I didn’t do any-thing stupid -- we sure want tokeep it that way.”

Singapore last month began asequence of imperious victoriesfor Vettel that saw him close thegap on Alonso, also a doubleworld champion, before usurpinghim Sunday. Alonso was third inthe race, his team-mate FelipeMassa fourth.

But the 25-year-old Vettel saidnobody at Red Bull was gettingcarried away.

“What I think is important isthat we have to keep things sim-ple. That means that we have toconcentrate on ourselves becausewe cannot influence what othersare doing, and starting mindgames now about what otherswill do in the next races is a wasteof energy,” he said.

“Lately we had some prettygood races and of course I hopethat we will be able to continue inthat way. But it is also obviousthis season that things can changequite fast, so there is no guaranteethat luck will stay on our side. So‘keep on pushing’ should be ourmotto for the last four races.”

Ferrari, who have now over-taken the fast-fading McLarenteam in the constructors’ champi-onship, refused to sound dis-heartened by Vettel’s fine run ofform. It is no secret that the RedBulls are the quickest cars in thefield, but in Alonso the Italianoutfit have a highly skilled driverwho has seen and done it allbefore. He has consistently gotthe most out of his inferiorFerrari.

YEONGAM, SOUTHKOREA: Ferrari team principalStefano Domenicali vowedSunday the Italian outfit wouldfight Red Bull all the way, afterSebastian Vettel toppledFernando Alonso in the drivers’standings.

Vettel’s victory at theKorean Grand Prix saw Alonsofall to second with four races togo. Vettel’s Red Bull team-mate

Mark Webber was second inthe race, with Alonso and thefellow Ferrari of Felipe Massathird and fourth.

A buoyant Domenicalideclared: “This afternoon’sresult was a great team effortand anyone who thinks thatlosing the lead in the drivers’championship might leave usdiscouraged is making a bigmistake.”

SHANGHAI: Novak Djokovicgained sweet revenge for his USOpen defeat to Andy Murray onSunday, saving five match pointsto seal a stunning 5-7, 7-6(13/11), 6-3 victory in theShanghai Masters final.

The iron-willed Serbian wassecond-best for long stretchesbut refused to buckle, sealing his13th Masters title in a contestlasting three hours and 21 min-utes as he hunts down RogerFederer at the top of the rank-ings.

The defeat, in a contestpacked with high-quality, spell-binding tennis, was defendingchampion Murray’s first everloss at the Shanghai Masters afterhe won the tournament in 2010and 2011.

“Could have easily gone theother way. He was five matchpoints up,” said Djokovic, whowon the China Open before com-ing to Shanghai.

“When I faced those matchpoints, I tried to focus on eachindividually. He was so close tothe victory that I cannot say Iwas the better player.”

The Serbian, hot favourite tobe year-end number one for the

second consecutive season, saidthe title would give him a majorboost as he closes in on the topspot, which he said was his“biggest objective”.

“It’s something I’m aimingfor. Obviously this is going to bea huge confidence boost and alsois going to help me in the race fornumber one,” he said, though hecautioned “it’s still not done”.

A gruelling first set containedseven breaks of serve as the play-ers went toe-to-toe in a breath-taking display of power hitting, with neither able to grab the ini-tiative.

But the British third seedmade what proved to be the cru-cial breakthrough in the 11thgame, recovering from 40-lovedown to break for a 6-5 lead as aninfuriated Djokovic destroyedhis racquet, tossing it away indisgust.

Murray, 25, broke in the sev-enth game of the second set for a4-3 lead and looked poised forvictory as he led 5-4, 30-0.

But Djokovic produced athrough-the-legs shot, wowingthe crowd as he began his fight-back and then thwarted the Scoton his first match point beforecancelling out Murray’s advan-tage.

The Serbian, 25, denied theScot four more times in a pulsat-ing shoot-out, sealing the setwith a drive volley that was fol-lowed by a trademark fist-pump-ing celebration as Murray

destroyed his own racquet. The third set went with serve

until Djokovic made the vitalbreakthrough to lead 4-3.Murray could not find a wayback, broken again as the Serbiansealed victory.

“I’m obviously disappointedI lost the match,” said Murray.“But it was a top-quality match.

Both of us played some unbeliev-able tennis at times.

“It was literally the differenceof one, two centimetres in win-ning the match and losing it. Youhave to put things into perspec-tive. It was obviously a bit frus-trating but it was so close andcould have been a different out-come.”

The thrilling duel hinged on a monster second set tie-break that lasted more than 20 minutes.

In her first appearance at the tourna-ment, the top seed had lost just 11 gamesin her first four matches and looked oncourse for another routine victory as shestormed into a 6-3, 5-0 lead against fifth-seeded Goerges.

“At 5-0 it felt like such a comfortablelead. I think I won seven games in a rowat that point. But then Julia just went forher shots, and I kind of misjudged the sit-uation,” Azarenka said.

“I felt like the match was already inmy hands, but Julia is such an unpre-dictable player, and the momentum canturn around really quickly with her, and

it did. I wasn’t really expecting to havesuch a change.”

At stumps, North werein commanding positionhaving scored 346 for 4, rid-ing on Yuvraj’s superbunbeaten 133 while skipperShikhar Dhawan also madehis presence felt with aninnings of 121.

The innings today will

certainly end any doubtswhatsoever about Yuvraj’sfitness and his ability towithstand the rigours oflonger version of the gameafter recovering from raregerm cell cancer.

He played only 152deliveries during his knockand hit 20 boundaries andtwo huge sixes off discardedIndia veteran Murali Kartik.

Both sixes were sentsoaring over deep mid-wick-et and the second one sawthe talented left-handerreach three-figure mark. This

is Yuvraj’s 19th first-classcentury but certainly one hewould remember for a longtime to come.

There were no demons inthe 22-yard strip at the RajivGandhi Stadium in Uppaland Yuvraj didn’t for oncelooked like in any sort oftrouble as he kept on punish-ing the Central bowlers.

Credit should also begiven to Dhawan whoscored his second DuleepTrophy century of the sea-son. His 200-ball inningscontained 14 hits to the fence

and, more importantly, added 160 runs with hissenior partner for the thirdwicket in just over 20 overs.

Such was Yuvraj’s domi-nance that he came to batonly in the 53rd over of theinnings which was well afterlunch but took on thebowlers from the very begin-ning. The trio of PraveenKumar (2/72), BhuvenshwarKumar (0/63) and RiturajSingh (0/67) were treatedwith equal disdain whileKartik was singled out forspecial treatment.
